This was an interesting lunch stop on our ramble incorporating Burnham Beeches. Unexpectedly found no food available but the pleasant landlord/barman was more than happy for us to eat our own - either brought from home or bought from nearby cafes/shops. I opted for a hot meal from Duran's bistro lounge which suited me fine, and coffee as I didn't think to check if that was available from the bar. We asked about the food situation - as it's advertised outside as being available. Maybe a casualty of COVID but told that it's not currently viable with only a few tables in the bar. Possibly barbecues in the summer - again with people bringing their own food to put on the barbecue.

Reading other reviews, I’m appalled at how unfair some people can be. If you want fine dining and sparkling ‘restaurant’ service, you can easily find it nearby. But if you want a well delivered pint, or other pub tipple, and possibly fancy some well-prepared pub grub, at very reasonable prices for the area, you’ll be glad you found this place. I walk to it from my home by Burnham Beeches, but it’s also very convenient for anyone using the A355 – plenty of parking. The new management have improved the place considerably. It no longer smells of dogs, though you’re still welcome to bring one. In summary, an unpretentious, friendly little place that is an asset within our community.

We came here with our family for a drink after a long dog walk. We were very excited to have a well deserved drink. However, the blonde girl behind the bar who I feel, on observation, may be with the landlord, was very rude and completely blank faced with the entire service. It was very rude and never in my years have I experienced such poor service. Shame for the pub.

We ate here and that was a big mistake. We eat out about 3-4 times a week, and this was the worst meal I've had in 2-3 years. Yes, that bad. Cheap chicken and sausages (tasted metallic and obviously frozen value sausages, chicken tenders from the freezer also) that I would not feed to my dog. The bill came to £30. Why?? Disgraceful. I really think something must have happened here recently, because this really is not what I would expect from a decent Greene king pub. I feel aggrieved at having paid for this tripe. Good choice of beers, so if that's your thing, it might be Ok, but for food, suggest Dixy Fried chicken, Favorite Chicken or any other failed KFC franchise might be better-disgraceful.

We run (hash) ever Tuesday evening come rain or shine from a pubs within a 10-mile radius of High Wycombe, then all meet back at the pub we set off from for drinks, chips, and chat. All the pubs are assessed on 4 categories, (each marked out of 10 points), which we then rank during the year on our website. SummaryA cosy real-ale haven - any pub which has its own ‘Beer Bat’ to assist with tasting a wider variety of ales has my vote straight off! If they could sort out their non-beer offerings, this pub could be a contender for ‘Pub of the Year’, but if you only drink beer, you won’t really care will you?Beer 9/10Chiltern 300 at £3.60 was pronounced ‘fantastic’ by most of the assembled hash, apart from Hawkeye who harped on about ‘the almost complete absence of bacteria’; i.e. ‘fantastic’ in Hawkeye-language. There were plenty of other ales on (I can’t recall all the names since I wasn’t drinking last night - the curse of a dry-ish January) ranging from the mass-produced Old Speckled Hen to the more individual Christmas ales - let’s hope they don’t get taken down on the 12th night as well! On a different note, I spied Matt R carrying in 3 beers in a special wooden holder, but didn’t think anything of it at the time - it was only when I checked later, I discovered this was a ‘Beer Bat’, comprising three 1/3rd pint glasses to allow a decent sample of each ale…almost worth a point in it’s own right there!Non-beer 5/10Disappointing here. Pretty averagely priced with STD’s at £1.20 and Coke at £2.50but this was one of the most un-limeyist (or most-sodaish) pints I’ve had this year. And no, it wasn’t just me and it wasn’t because I was in a bad mood ‘cos I wasn’t drinking - my STD cohorts agreed to a man (and a woman) with me, that this didn’t deserve to be called an STD….on the account of there being no ’T’ = tang.Food 8/10Very pleasant - 7 bijou mini-frying baskets of chips were produced and demolished in short order…..’short’ being the appropriate word as they’d done most of the demolishing before the ‘longs’ entered the fray - shame Mike didn’t divert to that petrol station this time round! Queen Jess (she of the ‘they charged me for soda!’ outrage) was disgruntled at the lack of condiments, anticipating some bijou mayo to appear along with her bijou chips, but the rest of the hash pronounced them ‘very good indeed’. Any hashers left without a chip on their shoulder were suitably mollified by Roger’s leftover Xmas cake biscuits, although there was no pannatone on offer, much to Andy’s chagrin. Queen Jess had obviously polished off the lot. Hashmosphere 9/10We ha-nnexed (a new hash word in the offing there?) a section of the pub, set up camp there, and drove any of the locals back to the bar, whereupon they met the advance hash raiding party clustered round the beer pumps. So, ’twas a lively gathering, complete with live strip show, as Hawkeye (dressed as one of the Village People) proceeded to drop his shorts to show us his wares. Sorry, that should have read ‘wear & tears’; i.e. a whopping great bruise caused by falling off his bike. A very pleasant hashmosphere indeed, with comfy couches and everybody all together in 1 room - quite limited parking in the car park though, and a busy through road, although plenty of side roads available (fairly) nearby

This pub has improved vastly over the last 3/4 years, always full of locals early doors, which does create a nice atmosphere, but it does have an identity crisis. The décor is quite oppressive, could have been cosy but for some reason isn't, probably the dark painted ceiling and the layout of the premises. I have eaten here, but it can become quite noisy, so usually just keep it to a drink with friends at early doors and then go elsewhere to eat. Staff are very friendly and hopefully the success of the pub will grow.

My partner Frank and I visited the Stag & Hounds last night for a meal for the first time. Frank had the Sirloin Steak and I had the Steak & Ale pie. Frank's steak was thick, big and cooked to perfection, the chips and accompanying veg were extremely good too. My Steak & Ale pie was freshly cooked, the steak was extremely lean and tender, and all the veg (mashed potato, creamed swede and red cabbage) were all very tasty as well. The prices were £16 for the steak meal and £12 for mine, which I thought was extremely good value for the quality of food we received. The Manager was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and his bar staff were very attentive. I would thoroughly recommend the Stag & Hounds to all my friends and family for a great place to eat. Four of us booked for a Saturday night dinner. The pub was packed with noisy blokes, we had to ask for the loud music to be turned down as we couldn't hear ourselves speaking. The service was slow but the food was very good when it eventually arrived.Afterwards we wanted a coffee but were told the machine was broken and when we paid the bill with credit card, there was no receipt available, so had to go back the next day to get one. The waitress, who looked about 14 with a ring through her nose, was definitely not deserving of a tip as she seemed to know nothing. Bottom line - don't go here on a Saturday night if you want a quiet dinner.

As the nearby 'fancy 4* hotel' I'm staying in is such a let down, I decided to look for somewhere else to have lunch. By chance, I came across the Stag and Hounds and thought it looked good. I was not dissapointed! They had a large selection of real ales on tap. I had a very delicious pint of proper beer to wash down a superb and very tasty burger. Such a contrast to the 'award winning restaurant' I ate in last night, the Stag and Hounds is far superior in terms of quality. As for quantity, well I felt the need to apologise for what I left behind, as I just couldnt finish it. As well as being a very high quality burger, the chips were delicious and crunchy, and the onion ring 'mountain' I had as a side rivalled my onion ring experiences in the US, as it was so big! Presentation was superb, served on slate, and overall far exceeded my expectations when I walked in. I expected standard pub fare, and whilst that was what it was in terms of style, it was of the very highest standard, far exceeding that of my fancy hotel. It was also considerably cheaper too!The girl serving behing the bar was extremely friendly and made me feel most welcome.Should I be in the area again, I would most definitely visit for another meal and the opportunity to sample some more of their very fine ales.

It was such a shame that the menu was so limited, offering little choice on either the lunch time or evening menus (and no "Specials") and that we had to wait SO long for our food to arrive. The shame mainly being that the quality of the food, when it arrived, was good and the presentation was excellent. However after nearly three quarters of an hour wait for the main course and even longer again for the desserts,( which were nearly all chilled, no cooking required, just arrangement of ingredients on the plate!) we were past caring what it looked like. The place was virtually empty for the duration of our time there so no excuses for being busy. In fact no excuses whatsoever were offered for being kept waiting for so long.

The whole experience of the Stag and Hounds was truly great. The Landlord is a wonderful host, the staff are very welcoming and professional. The food was great and quirkily, served on wooden planks or as they like to say-Platters.The pub has a good homely feel and the locals are very friendly. If there is a beer on tap which you are unsure about, just ask a local and get good honest advice. The range is as good as you would expect in any free house and I look forward to my next visit.

Excellent steaks as usual. We have used the Taplow Miller & Carter restaurant for several years and have never had a bad meal or service. This is the only place to go for a steak, chicken or fish meal

Food too salty ! Service rushed . Over charged us. Despite agreeing that a group of 5 or 7 would be ok our table, we need £15 deposit per person (£105) and then dis not refund the £30 for a group of 5

6 of us had a lovely afternoon tea at the weekend, lovely food, great service. Nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend 👌 👍
