Ethorpe Hotel in South Bucks

We visited the Ethorpe for lunch on Monday 2nd November and had an excellent meal for 3. I had the mixed seafood grill, it was one of the best meals I've had for ages. It had many different flavours. My wife had the chicken and garlic sauce which we have both had before and can recommend it as well. I had sticky toffee pudding for dessert and can rate that a 10 out 10 The service was excellent as well and we had exemplary service from Tracy. And in these troubled times we felt completely safe.

Lovely night out before lockdown. Food great, big shout out to Anthony for exceptional service. See you all in December hopefully.

I visited the Ethorpe for lunch yesterday with friends to celebrate a birthday and we all enjoyed our meals. We found the menu choice varied and good value. Anthony who took our orders and delivered our meal was cheerful, helpful and made us feel welcome. The tables were well spaced out, hand sanitiser available and we felt comfortable. Overall a really good lunch.

Had the most amazing food with prompt and polite service. Very accommodating and service with a smile. Would definitely recommend.

We booked a table, but i don't think that was necessary, there was good spacing of tables, the food was good & the staff friendly.

Our 2nd visit in 2 weeks ,we went last week & enjoyed it so much we decided to return tonight as it was my husbands birthday. Our waiter both times was Anthony ,who was friendly & funny ,did his job well,was attentive without being intrusive .Food was really lovely ,we all enjoyed it & will most definitely return soon.Social distancing was very much adhered to ,hand sanitizer was at the door where we came in ,tables very clean ,extremely COVID friendly !!

We had a great meal here today. The tables were nicely spaced for Covid safety and the service we received was great. Our server Anthony was very helpful and attentive.

So many waiters & waitresses nowadays give average serice but our waiter Anthony was a real cut above the norm. Charming, friendly, helpful & attentive but not "in your face". What a lovely change to be served by someone who appeared to actually really enjoy what he was doing & by golly did it show. A true people person. Hope his bosses realise how lucky they are to have him. Well done Anthony...you helped 2 girls have a very enjoyable evening eating out. Well done, thank you & stay the way you are

Having visited The Ethorpe restaurant & bar many times over many many years . I was extremely disappointed on my last visit . The lack of social distancing , tables being cleaned but not to the standard they should be , a quick wipe over in the middle but not on the areas that have had hands resting . There was one member of staff rushing around with a face mask on and he was the only one we saw. The bar man was rude and inattentive , and we were made to feel unwelcome by his glares as he chatted quite happily to what I can only assume was his mates . Very disappointing visit .

I love this place and staff always helpful whenever we come lily always makes us feel comfortable and very helpful ,nice to see friendly faces !

5 key promises not observed. No hand sanitiser on entry. Lots of people not social distancing. Most people were not wearing masks. No one asked for our details for tracing purposes should it be required. No one counting how many people entering the bar. Most of bar staff were wearing masks but one or two not wearing masks all the time. This is my first venture out after lock down. Shame cos normally I love the Ethorpe

We stayed at the Ethorpe for 2 nights on 29/2 to 2/3/20. We have stayed here on numerous occasions over the last 10 years. The staff do a great job and are nice and friendly. Michael was especially friendly and was doing the best he could for breakfast on his own. The service at breakfast due to him being run off his feet was slow as there was no milk, no coffee, no cups and we waited for ages. He needs help for breakfasts.The food in the restaurant was good and we eat both nights in the hotel.The rooms are very tired now and need updating as soon as possible as customers will go elsewhere. This has been a regular visit each year but not sure until the rooms improve we will we stay again as the floor boards in the room were creaking and really annoying.The staff are amazing considering how busy they are. You can’t fault the staff if anything more staff are required. An enjoyable stay.

I have been a regular here for over 12 years. Great cosy atmosphere particularly in winter when the fire is roaring. Reasonably priced food with great staff. Only negative is the heaters outside, one of them has been broken for years but this is an issue with lack of investment from the company rather than the local staff/management

A very pleasant experience for our family,would return again for another visit. Keep up the good work and will see you next time

Went for lunch with a group of family & friends - my meal arrived at least 1/2 an hour before everyone else’s .. ??!! I waited for the others to get theirs so mine was stone cold - no offer to heat mine up although I went to ask the waitress what was going on .. my meal was not a starter ! Table was sticky when we sat down in the restaurant. Very young barman had no clue about the parking ticket refund ... The biscuit that comes with the coffee is a joke .. size of my thumbnail .. if you go in for a coffee which I like there, you cannot order a cake or pastry .. I asked a barman on another occasion who told me they tried having cakes but it was not popular .. ?!! Must be the only place where people don’t want something with their tea/coffee .. Can it really be that difficult in this day and age to sort it out?!! Such a shame ..so many bad reviews .. I would be embarrassed if I ran this restaurant !

Honestly not sure I've been to a pub with more miserable bar staff. Staying in the area at the minute for work and have popped in here a couple of times on a Friday evening. immediately noticed the manager being not very welcoming but gave it a miss. Both evenings I've spent here they have turned the lights off when closing instead of just simply saying the bar is shut leaving a number of people in the pub just in darkness. My pal was served a pint clearly from the end of a barrel with zero gas and when he questioned was asked how long ago he got the pint and that it couldn't be replaced because the bar had closed (even though he bought it on time) and was simply put more gas in it.To be honest I could go on and I'm boring myself but this place is fairly pricey and the miserable staff provided is just not worth it.

Very Happy with food no problem we go many times during the year and also visit the Ethorpe with our friends from Hertfordshire.

Came for Christmas Lunch with 2 friends. Food was great, served hot and there was plenty of it. Service was good considering it was Christmas Day. Would definitely visit again.

I was in need of a change of scenery and also somewhere close to visit with friends. This was perfect. I arrived a little stressed and left feeling happy and content.

Nice food served cold. Why did it arrive cold, it must have been hanging around waiting to be served. What a shame.Ruined the meal.

Great location. Caught the train into London, station only a short walk from the hotel. Breakfast hot & tasty.

Took our friends to celebrate both birthdays. Have been on several occasions but very disappointed. Waitress very sullen all seemed too much trouble for her. Spirit drinks were drowned in coke staff need to be trained on how to mix a drink. Wife lasagne was awful full of grissle and the garlic bread so hard couldn’t eat it. Then to top it all was overcharged on our bill and took ages for manager to come and speak to us about it and reluctantly sorted it out. We have been to ethorpe on many occasions but not up to its usual standards at all staff wise

Good food, good drink, good atmosphere, good staff, good customers [no rif-raf]. Just the sort of place for a friendly night out.

It was my 40th. We decided to go here as its in the middle of my family. This is the best meal I've had here. The waiter was amazing, was so attentive, friendly and nothing too much trouble

Two of us ordered the two vegetarian dishes on the festive menu as there was little choice on the main menu.

From the day I booked my son's birthday party at The Ethorpe, they were very helpful and accommodating. On the night, the food was plentiful and all very tasty. A lot of the guests commented on how good it was, definitely exceeded our expectations. The staff were very friendly and helpful all night, nothing was too much trouble. I wouldn't hesitate to return.

This place has really gone downhill. The last three times I’ve been, the food has just got worse. Today’s Mac and cheese tasted like it was made with powder cheese sauce, and still keep repeating on me. It was definitely the worst mac and cheese I’ve ever had.

Sadly from being one of the nice places to eat over the years this Hotel /restaurant needs a good tidy up , starting with the loos !

My previous review said I would definitely visit again despite some issues, but this will certainly be the last time I go to Ethorpe Hotel.

Where do I start, the Ephorple needs a total refurbishment ( or has Greene King made a decision to run it into the ground and sell site) we arrived on Sunday the 22nd September to be greeted by a receptionist looking after her baby, now how unprofessional is that?

Pleasant venue with good staff, which we have used with a group occasionally over a number of years. This visit was marred by the fact rhat the dish I ordered from the menu which was new on the day of our visit was not available, which seems surprising! Otherwise a good experience.

Haven't been to this restaurant since I was a child so when we visited on Sunday I was excited to see how it has changed in the past 15 years. I was gladly surprised that the warm, friendly feel the hotel had is still there with friendly staff and great food. I was baffled as to why it was so quiet for a Sunday afternoon but that did mean my food came out extra quick which I happy to accept. Overall this is a lovely place the visit with family and friends.

Found this place while travelling so not booked. Staff really friendly and soon showed us to a nice table near the window. Our waitress was Kelly who had lots of information about the menu and helped us choose. Food arrived quickly and was very good.

As always a great visit with food of good quality and choice. Everyone in my party was pleased we will visit again.

Quite a long wait for food even though it didn't seem too busy. Staff friendly but the food was just average and for the price we expected better - not great value.

Have stayed here a few times & it’s always a good vibe. Great selection of lagers & ales & food has always been good.

I was meeting friends for lunch and chose this place for 2 reasons; it had outside tables and it was somewhere we'd passed for years on our commute, but never visited.

Eat here fairly regularly. Sometimes the experience is ok and sometimes awful. To be fair to them, the last time it was awful, we were refunded our money.

Double room was spacious and comfortable. No lift so all luggage was hauled upstairs. I paid for bed and breakfast but breakfast finishes at 9am so I just got bed. Receptionist called a taxi for me and said it would be 10-minutes. I waited a half hour for the cab because another guest grabbed my cab and I was late for work. Then the receptionist lied to me about it. Not impressed with this type of shoddy service. The hotel is not a cab company but they have a responsibility to ensure they use reliable taxi companies and don’t lie to customers. I won’t be staying here again.

Popped in for lunch before getting the train into London. Big menu, reasonable prices and great customer service. The barman (manager ?) made my wife mint tea with real mint leaves as they'd run out of mint teabags.

I visited the Ethorpe restaurant on Sunday evening at the last minute. The restaurant was less than half full yet I was given a small , wobbly table close to the bar where a waitress was busy drying cutlery and throwing it noisily into the cutlery drawer. I requested a move to a steady table and then waited 25 minutes to receive my pre-meal drinks and a further 20 for the meals to arrive. Although edible, they were very disappointing quality and not value for money. We were anxious just to get out of there, ate what we could and determined not to return.

The restaurant was not very busy at all but it still took 45 minutes from ordering just a main course for it to arrive at the table.

Let down on table choice which was prebooked, got put in a booth with a chair stuck on the end, let down on meals as server could not understand English, even when complained about cold meals, well overdone meals, things missing off the meals the server would just say “ sorry could not understand you”, thanks to a member of staff called Kelly she made our visit a little better, but other than that it was very disappointing on this visit, have had many a good meal in the past though. Will return but may ask for a different server if we get the same one.

Went with family and our German exchange student and everyone enjoyed their meal. The Hungarian waitress was delightful and professional and enhanced our experience.

Poor Sunday roast , waitress more interested in entertaining themselves on their phones won’t be back , message to the owners don’t waist your time contacting me use your time sorting this place out

I’ve eaten a few times at the Ethorpe and generally it has been very enjoyable. Unfortunately on this occasion I was left so dissapointed, not only was it Mother’s Day but it was also my Partners Mother’s Birthday! I felt terribly guilty as the Ethorpe was my recommendation.. we waited to be seated, our food order was taken but not processed through the system correctly so after waiting over an hour for our meal we then had to wait a further 45 minuets as the kitchen was backed up with several ‘lost’ orders.

I visit Ethorpe regularly with a group of carers. It is good as it is on the flat and very suitable for the disabled. One of our group is our n a wheelchair. Food is always good and at a reasonable price.

Went for lunch today. Shocking beyond belief. Ticket machine using card payments was not working so couldn't purchase a ticket. Went into reception and got asked "haven't u got any money"?? I said I haven't cash on me and the receptionist rolled her eyes.

Nice place..do not make it clear can not have lunch price on Saturday... almost double,elderly foster father given expensive litre of water, clear unecessary...super foof though very sad at feeling misled , emailed my feelings ...still waiting.. clearly we are not worth a response

Kitchens at this venue standards have slipped somewhat.in delivery of good food. We are reviewing diners but may have to consider our options.

As a business traveller that stays here often my experience tonight was one of total disbelief. Generally over recent months the quality of food has gone downhill. Portion size not what they were, and main courses very oily. Tonight though was another level. Having refused a starter from previous experience I elected to have the cheese as a desert. It duly arrived and the waiter ran. Advertised was a blue cheese which I had looked forward to but didn’t get. Once I could eventually get to speak to the waiter it was explained (but not when presented) that they didn’t have any and so additional cheddar was provided, I would dispute that but as the cheese that I wanted wasn’t there it was returned to the kitchen. Some time later (as I was abandoned to my own devices) I requested the pate, again this arrived and the waiter scarpered. What I had been given was a stone cold pate fresh from the fridge and a couple of pieces of bread. Which had been advertised as toast. Again no explanation or apology

Excellent service and great food couldn’t fault the food or service will certainly go every month from now on

I can thoroughly recommend the Ethorpe as the place for a party. We had a surprise 50th in their function room for a friend there last night. The food was plentiful and delicious. The room is absolutely lovely (and to be able to decorate it was a bonus). All the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The prices were extremely reasonable. I could not fault this place - it was perfect. Thanks to Ben and his team for enabling us to have a great celebration without having to worry about a thing.

So we all used to drink here years and years and years ago. We had a few tables 3 kids under 12 and 5 under 20 and 10 of us oldies. Sean still works there 25 years odd i reckon. Food and drinks. The food was ok. Pub food. I had the gamon which was all very good just seriously not enough of it. We usually fish and chips friday which i had for lunch today... but i was just not satisfied by the volume of food on my plate to the point that i had cheese board to follow then i had the chocolate cake for pudding 2 followed by the sticky toffee pudding for my third pudding. Finaly full we had another drink and went on to the after party.

Part of the Chef and Brewer chain with their common menus and prices. So, good value if not the highest quality around. The menu is comprehensive and the starters are generous. There is a different special on every day of the week -including steaks on two days- at very competitive prices. The décor and furnishings are good and the overall atmosphere in this 1930’s hotel in the centre of the town is pleasant and relaxing. There’s a large carpark – but you must buy a ticket.

I think I would have rather stayed at home and had beans on toast!

The resataurant offers classic pub food and has a good range for vegetarians and vegans. The drinks menu is extensive. The food is really well prepared and the staff are great.

We visited this Chef & Brewer last night, having been a few times before, & times before were a bit hit & miss food wise, but last night was the worse food we've had here!!

A very disappointing experience ,uncomfortable surroundings, poor service from undertrained staff, lengthy delays and food well below the level of even an average restaurant

Great food and we were a party of 4 and had a 2 course lunch and used a voucher which then bought our bill down to £44.00, which was amazing value for what we ordered.

I have stayed here many times and it’s getting better. Staff is great, helpful and friendly. Pub downstairs is new and inviting.

Very average quality food, gourmet chicken burger was just a chicken burger - nothing gourmet about it at all. Service was very slow due to lack of staff.

We had a family dinner with our 3 grandchildren on Boxing Day.The waitress was a pleasant trainee but was unsure of whether we could have a la carte on the set Boxing Day menu. iIt was sorted out that we could have either.The service was slow but the food was good..

We have been going on Xmas Eve for 4 consecutive years, never again. Food poor, late and choices made in Oct not available. Tried to overcharge. Request go unanswered, then double turns up.

My wife and I always go out to lunch on Christmas eve, this year it was at the Ethorpe and we had a very good meal and enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to good service and fine food!

The wait for our food was unacceptable (an hour). Whilst our waitress was lovely and very apologetic it was obvious she and the other staff were struggling to cope. The Ethorpe has always suffered from not having enough staff on duty. Please take note - there are now too many other places to eat in Gerrards Cross!

This was the first time we had eaten at the Ethorpe Hotel, from first arriving the service was impeccable from all staff members. There were 14 adults and 10 children and we had their private room for our Christmas meal. I forwarded onto them everyone's menu choices beforehand to make it easier for my family and also the chef, this worked out fantastically. The food arrived piping hot and the portion sizes were incredible everyone commented. I would certainly recommend you paying a visit I know we will all be back next for our next gathering.

I tried to book in to the Langley branch but they were full in the date we wanted so we looked to go to another. We are pleasantly surprised by Ethorpe Hotel, it was a very big pub, with lots of customers but it didn't feel busy at all. The service was great and our server was polite and efficient. Food was delicious and well priced.

Prebooked a festive meal for 6 on a weekday, had a large table in the restaurant by the window but found it quite chilly in there even though there was a small electric heater near where I was seated. Waitress Sally was efficient on waiting our table and clearing the plates promptly when we finished eating but my main complaint was our main meals, I found the turkey was very dry and suspect it was overcooked, my friends roast potatoes were undercooked and she left them, I didn't complain as the rest of the meal was ok and desserts were great. I have been to the Ethorpe many times for meals and mostly they have been good but I was disappointed with this meal and hopefully this was a one off and the kitchen staff were maybe having a bad day.

We came here as a family for a Sunday roast in the evening. We ordered 4 roasts, 1 hunters chicken and 1 mixed grill. All the mains arrived minus the sides we ordered; 2 cauliflower cheeses, 3 extra pigs in blankets, an extra Yorkshire pudding and a steak sauce.

My wife and I called in for lunch recently and found the tables sticky and with beer marks and the service was dreadfully slow. We were seated quickly but waited 20minutes before our order was taken. When the food arrived it was good although the waitress had taken the wrong order from us. She apologized but as we had waited so long we said we would eat the meal. I then asked for vinegar and tomato ketchup.....never arrived! We finished our meal without ever being asked if everything was ok. I was not going to leave a tip but we noticed they had only two waiting staff looking after diners and the bar. The poor girls were run off their feet. I thnk management need a kick up the backside as this Hotel/Restaurant pub could be a little gem if managed properly.

Avoid! Such a decline in the 12 months since our last visit. One of us is still waiting for his main course. I’m still waiting for the vegetables that were supposed to come with my main. Staff are nice and well-meaning, but just not up to the job - and there’s loads of them! No wonder the drinks are so expensive.

Restaurant good but the bed room appeared to be a little antiquanted and could do with an update to current standards

Having had a disastrous experience at another Chef & Brewer we decided to ‘try’ The Ethorpe, this was a vast improvement on our last visit to the other Chef & Brewer. Nice interior, food good, eating staff very efficient and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for our waitress. All in all a very enjoyable lunch time with friends.

Arriving for a 3.45pm late lunch on Sunday 4th Nov, my party of 3 all ordered the Roast Topside of Beef.

the food is very tasty and they have good draught beers there – also several lagers for those who have still to develop their taste buds.

Just had a small lunch visit, made so enjoyable by such a happy bar person, did not get her name but so different from previous visits with grumpy staff. Well done to the cheerful girl on 4th Oct lunch time.

Staff very helpful and nice a couple of mishaps with meal bacon served to vegetarian fish was all batter but what do you expect when so busy staff trying to be everywhere at once they sorted and gave free meal so very fair overall we've always had good meals here

Frequently take a local churches Men's Group for dinner at Ethorpe - typically 10 of us. Always experienced good value, simple food from wide choice on menu. Staff try hard. Will continue to return

Never try and call as they NEVER pick up the phone! I’ve tried to call the pub to make a booking 8 times over 2 days and never got a call back or anything! Even when I go into the restaurant I’ve dont think I’ve ever seen anyone on the reception desk!

Dreadful Sunday lunch - beef topside. Obviously all cooked much earlier. Beef like 3 bits of old shoe leather, tiny frozen roast potatoes, not enough gravy, lukewarm veg. Nothing like the photo on the website which I have attached! When the waitress asked if all was OK, she didn’t wait for the answer so I’m writing it here instead. Hard to find a worse Sunday lunch!
