We were shown to a grotty table, saying that the other tables were booked out. But after we'd been seated other people after us were allowed on them. That aside, the food was poor and the seasonal veg was from frozen and incredibly tastless. The lamb and mint pie had a very weird taste to it and I had to ask for mint sauce to put a taste to it. Had been 13 years ago and was fine, won't come again

This is a really beautiful hotel, in beautiful surroundings, near to the church and river, from where you can take a very enjoyable boat trip. However... we went back to the hotel, after our boat trip, for "refreshments". We were a coach party of elderly people, but, do you know what, funny though this sounds (I'm being sarcastic, sorry!): We Do Like A Cup of Tea!!! We enjoy ourselves, but can't always do what we used to, so little things mean a lot. Our refreshments, for a group of 33, was a mean plate of unexciting biscuits and I couldn't believe it when I saw them pouring into the (tiny) cups - they only filled them maximum one third. I couldn't help it, to the surprise and disapproving looks of the serving staff, I said "don't bother" and walked away. What does tea cost? Practically nothing, but they couldn't even pour us a decent amount. I went back later, as others on my table wanted tea, and asked for 3 cups - it was like being in Oliver! The stoney faced waitress repeated me "THREE cups??!!" She obviously thought I was going to pour them all into one cup, so filled them all three quarters - ha, ha, last laugh on them - my fellow passengers got a decent cup of tea each! I would most definitely have considered going there to stay, but cannot abide meanness, especially towards elderly people, who often don't speak up for themselves.

We were visiting the area and this place was recommended to us, assume food is hit and miss. We ordered the hot sharer (which was ok, although not great), however the charcuterie board was one of the worst we’ve had (it’s a family favourite). The meat looked grey and tasted off to us. We let the staff know, who explained it was cured (which we knew) and the colour might change as under a heat lamp. I think this is the first time we’ve ever complained about food when out, but we couldn’t not say anything. They did discount half of it, considering we ate one slice between us, it felt like the manager could have been more understanding. That said, our waitress was great otherwise would have been one star. Feels like they should reduce menu and do a few things well, pub classics arriving at other tables looked ok - so pick wisely!

Returning customers who Ordered x2 portions of sausages advised by a member of staff when ordering there was 2 or 3 sausages per portion. The staff then proceeded to Deliver 2 sausages to the table I asked for the second portion twice. A manager eventually came out to the table to advise that the 2 members of staff told me an incorrect amount of sausages and that there was only 1 per portion. No apology was offered but he stated he would bring them out. The manager then came out with a card machine requiring a further payment! To which I refused! So the sausages did not arrive. I Also ordered a lasagne which was tasteless. Had a planned return trip to stay with family however will not be returning after today’s experience/ service!

Food is terrible. The location and building is stunning. Has a great garden area for families but honestly, I’ve had better kebab burgers. It looked as though it was boiled for a couple of minutes. Bacon was cooked on maybe a radiator? No in all seriousness, it looks like it was all microwaved. Very disappointed and I did make a waiter aware of this and he agreed. He offered me something else to eat or a drink to which I refused. Didn’t offer a refund. Sadly would not return

Nothing spectacular about the venue or the menu. Service was adequate. I am restricted to a very few items on a menu and usually live on gammon and chips when eating out. As I cannot have the usual add ons I usually if I could have 2 eggs instead….yes they say! But when I get the bill they have charged me £1.50 for one egg!!! All establishments I have visited over the years are very accommodating and throw the egg in as I am not having peas, toms etc. Will definitely give this place a wide berth in future

I'm vegan and my husband is veggie. Finding options to eat out in the Forest of Dean area are a little limited so I was happy to find The Old Court Hotel. Four vegan options on the main menu plus two specials. I had koftas, very tasty and very meat-like, I did double check there were no meat koftas on the menu just in case they were mixed up, I'm pleased to say there was not. Had chocolate cherry cake with chocolate ice cream for dessert. Updated from previous review on 2023-09-25 Pros: Choice, Quality, Friendly staff Cons: No vegan wine

We dined as a group of four adults, and our special evening out was wonderful. Having chosen this restaurant based purely on geographical location (our family are local although we travelled a very long way!), we discovered an absolute gem and will definitely be returning. Our table (in the conservatory area) was ideal: plenty of space with delightful view of the gardens. Service was efficient, attentive with an air of professionalism and keenness to please which is uncommon. Well done. The menu is wide and varied, which suited our group well: everything from 'pub favourites' to fine dining. We managed a main course and dessert each.....although the starter menu looking tempting. (At our age, we have to pace ourselves!) Special mention for the Heredfordshire steak; cooked to perfection. Others in our party praised their cod meal and the lamb shank. Desserts included a generous sticky toffee pudding with lashings of custard. Fantastic! We were asked with great politeness if we would register our bank card at the beginning of the meal. This was executed with an apologetic air, and I was happy to do so. No issue at all for us. Thank you everyone who made our evening last Saturday. We'll be returning in October sometime, for sure!

I will start with the positives. Lovely venue, great, friendly, hardworking staff, lovely BBQ. Unfortunately the negatives out weigh the positives. When we arrived, we found the receptionist to be very rude. Despite pre booking to arrive early, she made it out to be a huge deal, making us feel very uncomfortable. If it wasnt for the fact we were attending a function we would have left. Other issues included, when using the shower, the whole bathroom got soaked, as the shower tray quickly filled up and there was nothing to stop the water going everywhere. We found the bar tariff to be incredibly expensive and the bar closed at 11pm, even for residents. There wasn't enough electric sockets in the bedroom and whilst the bed was comfortable, the room was only small. When it came to breakfast, for over £12, I would have expected a lot more. Yes there was a continental buffet with a cooked included, we thought whilst it tasted nice, there definitely wasnt enough for the price, please see photo.

Very disappointed. We have been here previously and had good meals. We went for Sunday lunch and it was awful! I had lamb, it was tasteless and I wouldn't have known it was lamb. Hubby had beef. Beef was nice. The veg was raw! I understand chefs cook veg al Dante but this was solid. Also 3 veg thrown on top of each otehr on a bowl .... it looked like my scraps that I scrap in a bowl for the dogs. Very poor presentation and tasteless as well as raw. Nowhere near enough heavy and we weren't asked if we wanted more. The gravy was a drizzle over the meat. Over priced and underwhelming. Won't be back here in a hurry

The setting is stunning, surrounded by hills and beautiful scenery whilst we sat outside for our evening meal, as well as having a decent playground for the little ones. However the food is a little on the pricey side for the quality- my Dad had fish and chips (£14.95) which he had no complaints about; Mum had a lasagna (£13.95) which was nice but a pretty small portion; I myself had the prawn and crayfish salad (£14.95) with marie rose sauce which had a good amount of prawns but no visible sauce, so it was bland- there's only so many plain prawns you can eat! But the real star of the show & disappointment was the steak! My partner had decided to have a treat and order the 16oz Hereford T bone steak (£28.95), as we were surrounded by beautiful countryside we expected this to be quality farm-fresh meat, and therefore worthy of the price! However when it arrived, it was much closer to an 8oz steak and rather than being thick and juicy it was thin- probably less than a cm thick. Worse still was the colour- having ordered it rare it was tough and grey in colour throughout, with no pinkness when cut into. Furthermore it was also cold! The bone and surrounding meat was grey, suggesting this was a steak that had been frozen, which would help explain its sorry state. This was disappointing, especially for the price, and so was returned and exchanged for a burger (also a little disappointing being dry and a bit bland, but not terrible). HOWEVER by far the worst part of the meal for us was that when we approached staff to discuss cooking of the steak, a lady by the name of Tori (we assume the manager?) made a beeline for us and jumped in to argue with us that the steak WAS cooked rare by her standards and was indeed PINK, whilst we all stared at the same piece of grey meat infront of us- we felt like we were being gaslit about our knowledge of colours!? She then proceeded to tell us it was cooked by the head chef and 'perhaps we didn't know how steaks are cooked'...! So we left feeling already patronised and offended, and sat patiently awaiting the replacement burger that would already arrive well after the rest of us had finished eating. Yet it seemed this was not enough for this lady, who returned to our table some 10 minutes to continue arguing with us about wether the steak was cooked rare or well done, andthat when she took it back to the kitchen she had tried it and it WAS warm. Whilst we accept there's an element of subjectivity to the cooking of steaks, there is no world in which that steak was not cooked thoroughly well done, and further was not hot like you'd hope for an expensive steak. It felt like this manager just wanted an argument, and was rude and patronising in the process! However the rest of the staff seemed smiley and friendly, although we did not have much chance to interact with them. As we were staying at the hotel we also had breakfast the next morning (£12.95 a head). There was a good selection of cereal, yoghurts, fruit as well as cooked options, and the staff were nice. Would just perhaps say the portions were a little on the small side and you do have to get up early. (As just a small P.S. it was also the same member of staff who initially told us we could NOT change the date of our booking to the following week, for it then to be changed the next morning by email when we had already travelled to the venue, and the first we knew of this was when trying to check in. So perhaps the Old Court Hotel's problems are more like a staff problem).

Firstly what a lovely building. Such a shame the service and food is so poor. My girlfriend and I sat down for a Sunday lunch. After ordering a can of coke (£3.35) I was told I needed to either pay for the coke upfront or hand over my debit card so they could pop it on the system. I asked why this was necessary and was told its standard procedure. I asked if this was because they thought we might run off and the waiter essentially said yes (in a light hearted way) If this WAS standard that would be annoying however the next table which sat down next to us were treated nicely and at no point asked to hand over card details in advance. This really irked me as it felt personal then, did we look like we couldnt afford the can of coke or the meal we had yet to order? or was it becuase we were in our 30's and the next guests were somewhat older? in any case being consistent is the most fair way. If we wern't so hungry we woud have left at this point and having eaten the food we wished we had. The food came out and the potatoes on the roast were still hard and under cooked, the meat tough and lacked flavour. The Gammon was tepid and small for the price and the whole experience left us both feeling disappointed and embarrased. Safe to say we will never return here.

We had food at this hotel, was a bit disappointed, the waitress did ask if we enjoyed and we’d said we weren’t very happy and she just collected our plates ,which still had a fair amount of food on them and left. Sorry but really wouldn’t recommend having food there

my wife and I have been through England and Wales-- never seen a place in such a panic of covid. Do not expect hospitality as that has been completely put int he back burner! Firstly the famous and beautiful garden is CUT OFF from use- forget it!! As the garden is a COVID RISK place. Only one entrance...met by a "host" you might mistake for a Red Cross emergency panic officer...who curtly tells you..."just drink?!" I reply is there hope of a breakfast,,,, no we "don't serve". But around me I see someone having a breakfast! There are just no words!!!Then it occurred to me, my wife is asian- from Vietnam. Could this be it? Then I ask her what reason. She gives nothing. Think upon this- the government gives permission to these establishments to operate- its summer and this si a tourist spot. Its still not busy- actually less than a quarter fill going by the car park. You want to feel sorry for them... but this establishment would have benefited by several hundreds of thousands of pounds of our money through disgusting wranglings with the state. Now this one wants to make it's point- it does not need to serve, it does not need to fight for the patronage, it does not need our custom, it does not want outsiders-- of course because of "health concerns".

Beautiful setting, great food and reasonably priced. The staff were very polite and helpful. The lasagna was lovely, hubby had the steak pie and said it was delicious. Highly recommended.

Lovely place in a lovely setting. Should have know it wasn’t going to be the best lunch tho when we had a table and a whole room to ourselves. Poor atmosphere obviously. The food .......overwhelmingly disappointing. Sunday lunch ..choice of TWO ! Ok well the 4 of us had lamb. Food arrived in decent time. First thing we noticed was that we had two giant potatoes each ! We’re they jackets roasters or croquets ? Answer ....we think all of them ! Weird. Tough fairly tasteless lamb. Ok gravy. Ok veg but not great. Three of the four sweets were fine but one was disgusting. Two arrived about 5 minutes after the others. Poor value for how much it cost. Staff were fine. Not really their fault. Summary. We can say we’ve been there but we don’t think we will be going back.

Called for lunch, this is a dog friendly hotel. I had the best ever fish and chips, my wife had shepherds pie with veg, nothing left on either plate. The staff were very helpfull and mindfull of the present situation. I would strongly recommend this food, and the drinks were good too.

Reasonable panini on a Monday lunchtime. The chips that went with it were alright, the salad a little sad. Service was ok. All in all distinctly average.

We visited on a sunny afternoon in late September and sat outside in the large beer garden. The beer garden was lovely but our stay was slightly spoiled by an over aggressive dog belonging to one of the other customers. We both had the sirloin steak as a main course and it was cooked to perfection although we thought my wife's steak had a little too much fat on it. The chips were absolutely superb. For dessert my wife had a white chocolate and raspberry roulade with cream which she thought was excellent. I had cheese and biscuits which was a very generous portion including some local cheeses from the area.Overall it was a lovely venue to pass away an hour or so on a sunny afternoon,

I really think COVID has affected this hotel and restaurant. I understand the measures required but the atmosphere has been ruined. We used to come here quite regularly about 8years ago and it was great. Visited today and something was lacking. The food has definitely gone downhill, the hunters chicken was inedible, the lasagna and burger was ok but at £15 each they need to be better. Such a shame as we love the area and to look at the outside the place is stunning. Won’t be coming back which is a real shame.

Had dinner here to make a change from we’re we were staying, the menu has a good range from traditional English to curries, Thai etc. We had a mix of a starter, some side dishes and a main all served at once, the food was good, portion size ample enough, we had a couple of drinks to accompany the meal and the overall bill was reasonable. We were sat in the conservatory as the main restaurant was full with residents, the setting itself is really historic a lovely stone built structure from the Olden times which attracted us in the first place.

Party of two driving home to Cornwall on the final day of our holiday in Herefordshire. We saw a sign that said 'Teas, coffees served from 8.30am' and decided to call in. On entering, at 10.15am, we asked if we could order two coffees and were greeted with 'you can do but we're still cleaning, you'll have to sit in the bar'. At more than £3 per cup we honestly wished we had gone to another venue. The hotel itself looked lovely but I'm afraid the staff were not, I don't think they wanted us to be there at all.

The Old Court Hotel has excellent COVID measures in place, what is amazing is that they have done this without impacting food or service. Masks are required inside (unless seated), there is a one-way system, sanitiser throughout the building and loads of signage reminding people of Government Guidance. They operate table service throughout but I overheard someone talking about an App so think they have app ordering too.The service was excellent. We visiting a couple of evenings in a row and were promptly seated on both. Service was just as prompt and this remained throughout our stay - as simple as it sounds but being offered additional drinks just as I'm finishing my current one feels like a novelty at the moment. We had food on our second night. The menu is extensive, plus a number of specials which sounds great too - I'd be surprised if anyone can't find something that makes their mouth water. We opted for basics (Nachos [~£15 sharer] and Burgers [~£15 each]) but these were incredible. Huge nachos piled with toppings followed by chunky burgers and well seasoned fries. Really good experience all round - they've nailed it.

Had a gorgeous lunch with a friend in the beautiful gardens behind The Old Court. Food and service were spot on! Thank you so much for creating a relaxing safe environment away from all the madness that is Covid. Can’t wait to come back!

It was a very pleasant place to have a meal. Staff were very welcoming and attentive. The problem was that the food promised more than it delivered and due to that fact it was over priced. More Seasoning of the food might have helped. A starter of fish cake was very bland. Pulled pork was dry and the barbecue sauce with it tasted like a cheap variant. Rump of lamb advertised as ‘served pink’ was overcooked and therefore tough as old boots - I couldn’t eat it. When I complained the waitress was very understanding and pleasant and I had a fifty percent deduction from the bill. It was a shame about the food but maybe we just chose the wrong food on the day.

Staff a credit, location picturesque and service beyond the call of duty, Food was absolutely outstanding and I am a 18 year in the business head chef, we cannot find anywhere that serves quality food in a relaxed environment. This changed today. Gammon was mouth watering and the ploughman’s was too, the chefs need a big arsed pat on the back along with the waiting staff, We will now be on the list of weekly regulars although in Newport! Thank you guys.

Stopped here for a coffee after kayaking which was very welcome. Place has a huge garden out the back and menu looked decent. We sat out the front with a latte which was nice but quite pricey. Pub very well set up for social distancing etc with good one way system.

Very busy afternoon but attentive staff, good range of food and portion sizes. Also catered for a fussy vegan ( me), meat eaters, children and then also made some fish fingers and welcomed our dogs. Ticked every box and the best meal for the 4 day trip and would go back and recommend. Our party had the steak & Ale ( huge homemade portion), Lasagne, Hunter Chicken, Prawn Salad ( lots of large prawns), Kids pasta and then the Thai Vegan Burger. All great portions and good value +++

Terrible food. My wife had the falafel burger which was literally 4 falafels in a bread roll. Vegetable lasagne had 3 bit of veg plastered in cheese. Waitresses were nice. Wasn’t even reasonably priced!

Stopped here for a spot of lunch and throughly enjoyed it. Stilton ploughman’s was delicious. Very clear COVID instructions and well signposted for the toilets. The only niggling things were you could only pay by pay pal and not contactless and the ploughman’s came on a chopping board so all the salad blew straight off! Apart from that, staff were lovely and glad to see a hotel/restaurant was doing well in these tough times

Lovely building and really nice outside terrace and garden. Covid19 arrangements were more than adequate and when the thunderstorms started we were accommodated inside without fuss. The food was varied. Lamb special was rather fatty and the steak and ale pie was dry, although the meat was good. Veg were described as al dente but were almost raw. However the felafel burger and gammon and the kids fish and chips were all good. wouldn't stop me from coming again

Walk-in at 6.00 on a Saturday evening, as we happened to be in the area and lived the look of the menu. Nobody greeted us, but we asked the lady who appeared to be in charge whether they were serving food that evening. She rolled her eyes. The conversation then went as follows: Her: Have you booked? Us: no, I'm afraid we haven't. Her: Huh. (Rolls eyes again, goes over to the bookings list). It's very quiet, but I don't really want to do any more today. Us:... Her: I suppose I could do 7 o'clock... Us: Don't worry, bye! Her: Huh. No way were we going to give our business to somewhere with such a bad attitude. But it turned out well for us - we ended up at the Lal Bagh Bangladeshi restaurant down the road, and had possibly the best curry we've ever eaten!

First visit to The Railway Inn Dinmore. Friendly, welcoming and helpful staff. 1 adult had an allergy to a foodstuff, staff were able to advise which meals were suitable - majority of meals, but Chef would accommodate as meals were freshly prepared. Booking advisable. Wait a while for your meal as its freshly prepared but well worth the wait. Good presentation of food, hot, tasty good quality. Off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. Beautiful location and tasteful décor. Will certainly visit again.

Nice place, but when asking about nuts in the carrot cake the girl didn't know. Shouldn't rain their staff on anaphylaxis and its dangers.
