Went recently as a guest at a kids 13th birthday party. Had a awful experience, the bar staff were extremely rude bar one lady. Paid for the hire of the hall, the landlady complained to us about the music not being to her taste and she didn't want to listen to it all night so she went to our dj and complained about it requestimg older music at a children's part. Also the host paid a member of staff for the night to be our side of the bar for the night to serve adults drinks, but there was hardly anyone there so they had to go around to the otherside where everyone else was not the private part that was hired and staff paid for. There was a two situations at the party which was sorted instantly when was told, then for the landlady to be going around telling adult guests about the issues for them to deal with it which is not the guest responsibility. Also a huge amount was paid for a buffet for the party and for what was paid for the food it was poor quality, was cheap and not thought about at all. Kids were being moaned at by 2 of the staff for anything that they done. They were also accusing and telling guests that they thought 12 year olds were doing drugs in the toilet as more than one child went into the toilet at one time. How the host was treated and spoke to, very patronising and belittling they couldn't enjoy the night as the stagg was constantly on their back about any minor thing. Very poor experience and wouldn't recommend to anyone again. For the amount they're charging for private hire is disgusting the quality and rudeness you receive, host and guests.

It seems to me that the bad reviews are given by people I wouldn't want drinking in the same pub. Yes the Landlady is trying to run a friendly pub and occasionally doesn't take prisoners, but in general the people she is short with deserve it. For instance the chap complaining that the pub says it is dog friendly and isn't was letting his dog run riot, and was asked to put it on a lead as there were children in the pub that were scared of dogs and failed to do so.

We had our daughter’s 40th party here, I have never been here before,what a fantastic nite the staff were so helpful & friendly. They also did the catering and that was great, so much food and all delicious. We all had such a great night can’t thank you enough.

This pub looks like it has recently changed hands. When you used to go there you could smell the bleach and, although tired in places it was spotlessly clean. Now, the whole place is quite grotty and the gents toilets, as an example, stink. Shame really. Also, made to feel quite unwelcome at times - there was a darts match and bingo due later in the evening and we were told, by a man who I assume is the landlord, that we shouldn’t be in one side of the pub! Despite us, as a group, spending north of £250 as a group.

Smashing little pub! I've got to say what a pleasant surprise when i nipped into this place for a quick pint of Fosters last Sunday and had the time of my life... Lets start with the staff, absolutely top drawer people, friendly, intelligent, quick witted and Saints fans; Superb. Lets move on to the interior, first rate seating and decoration with ample running water in the toilets; Superb. Next up, and most importantly, food and drink, I started with Pumpkin Agnolotti, always a hit and miss dish and most chefs have a tendency to be a little too heavy with the sage....was that the case today?...not a chance; Superb. I then moved onto my main, Risotto of roasted celeriac and thyme. Now here's where it gets interesting in my excitement I'd forgotten to tell the young girl (Clare) that I have a debildeabilitating allergy towards Parsley. Thank god, Dave was on hand with an Epi pen, crisis averted; Superb. After all that commotion I was a little hungry and, of course, realised I still hadn't eaten a main....well here's all you need to know about this establishment, they remade the dish substituting the parsley for a chervil & arugula mix; Superb. All of this was paired to perfection with a lovely, ice cold, pint of Fosters; Superb. I'm positive I saw Liam Gallagher in the corner as well, though that could have been the epinephrine wearing off, that said he'd be daft not to come in here; Superb!

Great landlady, always happy up for laugh. Beer always tastes good. Always a roll on the bar if you're hungry 😋

Attended the venue for a private family function. My nan had hired a function room for my grandads 70th birthday and invited the whole family. Early into the evening my daughter needed her nappy changed. I went to the ladies with her only to discover the changing table had been screwed shut. When asked if they could provide me with an alternate, safe space to change her, the unhelpful lady behind the bar casually shrugged her shoulders and replied in an extremely condescending way with "we are a pub". Later in the evening she then proceeded to scold other children at the party for popping balloons she had left in the area we had hired that were for another function! The area hired was tiny, the dance floor (which was already small) had tables and chairs blocking the entrance to it and the leather chairs looked like they had seen better days. They have an unnecessarily large room for 2 snooker tables yet their function room is small, an awkward shape and could barely hold 50 people. Extremely disappointing.

Family get together. Lovely place to take all members of family. Great service and friendly staff 👏 x

I would like to thank sue for doing all she can for my parents 60th anniversary it was an amazing event the dj she recommended was fantastic and we had an amazing time to be told that we have the run of the place from morning until we left at midnight was great it gave us time to decorate and do what we needed you are an amazing pub and people Thank-you do much xxx

Sorry, but not wasting my time going to this pub again. It seems that they have no idea what the last time you can order a drink is. Time is variable, apparently. For example last orders is at 11 on a Friday, you have to be out by midnight but there is no fixed time at the bar to order your last drink and I've given up guessing. Staff are rude and unhelpful so will go elsewhere.

Lovely pub. Went in there with a few mates. Played pool for 2 hours. Kicked us out for being under 25. Didn’t know this was a rule that existed, thought if your over 18 you could drink but according to this rude land lady maybe not. Spent £100+ in there over 2hrs then suddenly was told to leave by the landlady who was quite blunt. When we questioned her she was very rude towards us. Was half way through a lovely pool game when disturbed. Won’t be returning. Ruined my mates birthday brawl.

Nice local pub. Dog friendly with a huge garden. Pool tables are only 50p a game which is unheard of these days. My only gripe is that it looks very intimidating when groups of locals are stood right outside the front door smoking. Why not designate a specific area away from the entrance

Very welcoming staff, very friendly pub

£4 pints, but a nice outside space with good areas for kids during the day/afternoon. Signs are very clear that the kids have to be out by 9pm so also free from kids screaming in the evening. 2 pool tables in the back are good too, though at a pound a pop are a little pricey.

Very nice range of drinks and very nice people that work there although my dog was very frightened the whole time and they played despacito at least 12 times in a row

Pub has reopened and is in excellent hands, great to watch Euro 2020 with large screens in both the main bar and side function rooms.

Llevamos en Woolston unos cinco años y ha habido varios cambios en la dirección del Obelisco en ese tiempo. El pub es una estructura sólida con dos áreas de bar claramente definidas, un comedor y un jardín de pub de tamaño decente. Tiene mucho potencial, pero ha sido problemático desde que llegamos. Tenía un pasado turbulento antes de que llegáramos y había estado cerrado por un tiempo. Pero había llegado una nueva dirección, y cuando visité el lugar parecía animado y prometedor, con una buena selección de cervezas de barril y un buen ambiente en el bar de la esquina. Pero los avisos en la puerta sobre drogas y cuchillos indicaron que aún existían problemas. Es una pena, ya que parecía que el lugar tenía potencial para ser un gran pub familiar. Las ofertas de comida han ido y venido con la llegada de nuevos gerentes, mejorando el lugar y tratando de atraer al público adecuado. Pero de alguna manera, a pesar de los esfuerzos, el pub vuelve a ser un pub para jóvenes y se vuelve un poco demasiado ruidoso para las familias y aquellos que buscan una comida tranquila. La comida se detiene pronto. Es difícil mantenerse al día con quién dirige el pub ahora. Ha habido loables intentos de atraer familias, con castillos hinchables y cabras en el jardín trasero. Creo que un nuevo gerente se hizo cargo justo antes del cierre. El lugar fue cerrado nuevamente para otra remodelación, y luego ocurrió el cierre. Me gustó que el pub abriera durante el cierre, vendiendo harina, comestibles, pan decente y cerveza fresca para llevar. Desafortunadamente, hay una tienda de la esquina exitosa y bien establecida casi enfrente, y no pudieron lograr que los clientes justificaran mantenerla abierta. Vergüenza. Pero cuando terminó el cierre, fue uno de los primeros pubs en reabrir. Todo el mérito para ellos por tener el coraje de hacer eso. El lugar estaba abarrotado y no se tenía mucho cuidado con el distanciamiento social. Los clientes eran jóvenes. Éramos los más viejos del lugar. El comedor es ahora una sala de billar. El lugar era ruidoso y el jardín estaba lleno de humo de cigarrillo. Si eres joven y animado y quieres un lugar para bromear con tus amigos, jugar al billar, beber algunas cervezas y usar el jardín como cenicero, este es el lugar para ti. No parece adecuado para nadie más.

Friendly local pub, good beer and friendly locals

This place is totally awful we arrived around 12-12.15 we were seated and orders taken quite quickly, the drinks arrived and to my total disgust the waitress placed it on the table directly in front of my 9 mth old grandson who was sat in highchair, which if I hadn't been quick he would of been scolded with hot coffee. We waited and waited for our starters to arrive (1.30pm) all around us diners were arriving and receiving food ordered after ours I asked the waitress when we'd get our food I said the service was slow for us but others were getting they're food. She became extremely rude raising her voice telling me you can't have food that's not cooked. I asked to speak to the manager waitress came back saying we could have the drinks for free no manager, the starters then came out mine was totally different to what I ordered, was told 2mins to get mine 30 mins later starter arrived. Ask if the mains could come out straight away as we didn't want to wait ages for them. 45min later the mains came out still no apology from manager all in all it had been around 1hr n 45 min and food was not good. I went to the manager as she was not going to come to us to apologise, all see could say in the most condescending way oh dear I'm sorry. She was such an awful manager with no conseption of the job she was supposed to be doing totally incompetent. This was the worst lunch experience I've had the misfortune to have. I will never visit this place again and will sharing my experience with anyone that will listen

Great venue for private party. Bar separate from locals bar and access to garden etc. Plenty of room and catering by Georgie Culshaw was very reasonable and great quality. Cant fault at all.

Friendly local pub. Relaxed atmosphere. Good decor, with lovely pool room. Brilliant music video system to sing along to. Nice place to chat with friends over a drink.

The rating is based on the culinary experience I had for the launch of a new independent business venture being launched at the obelisk in Woolston. G's Deli Dogs I found out is nothing to do with the pub itself but a regular with over 30 years catering experience so full credit to the landlord for supporting local entrepreneurs. Never thought I would be moved to write a review about a hot dog but it truly is "Sausage Artistry". I had the Hot Beefy One, my wife had the Greek and the boys had a Pup each. Fantastic flavours and great value, found out the rolls were baked locally specifically for the G's and the sausage itself is nothing like the wet limp Sausage you normally get..full of flavour and firm! To top it all i found out they do outside catering so that is my son's birthday food taken care of!

I recently visited the obelisk pub which is located about half a mile from the main shopping High Street in Woolston. This pub has been located here for as long as I can remember and still seems to be very busy on regular occasions, the staff are both very welcoming and extremely polite.

This could be a great place but it has a cold stark atmosphere. It lacks comfy seats/sofas in both bars. It also needs some soft furnishings eg plants, pictures on the walls, & table lighting. It would soften the atmosphere and draw people in who just want to get out of their 4 walls and have somewhere to relax.

Booked the apartment offered by the obelisk. When we went in to sign into the apartment, the landlady served multiple locals/regulars before us even though they came in minutes after us. The WiFi in the apartment was terrible, there was no kitchen as advertised and the picture of the bathroom/toilet were misleading as the bathroom/toilet was in a room about 1m x 1m in size. The kettle was in bad condition and glasses were dirty as still had the lipstick of a previous customer on them.

This used to be a realy good pub to visit .it now lacks good choice of beers lacks atmosphere and definetly class with the female bar staff one certain head lady is rude , ignores the customers as much as she can swears when you ask for anything this pub needs to lose the staff they have and re invest in staff . I would not recommend this place for private party or leisurable visit definately seen its best days .wake up and shake up is needed come on mr landlord start stepping up .i was looking to use this for my clients stop over at use for business meetings opportunity will now moved to more pleasant surroundings.

Good cider (stowford press on draught). Great pool room with 2 tables. Lovely garden with goats petting zoo for the little ones and a good playset for them as well. Worth a visit.

Thus pub has been in many hands over the years. These owners have transformed it into a trendy pub with families in mind. They have finally got rid of the "death trap" bouncy castle, and replaced it with a wooden sturdy climbing area with slide. It is amazing, really good size. Then at the back they have 3 goats. The kids can get crackers behind the bar to feed them. Really good idea to keep kids amused while mum and dad have a drink. They have done a paint job inside with trendy "library themed" wallpaper. Also, the pool tables have been replaced with shiny new ones. It is a lovely pub to visit now. Well done to the new owners.

A little dear but garden was great for the kids. They especially loved the goats.

Went for a party great if you have young kids enclosed space play park and mini goats....2pool tables kept the older ones happy only downside was very small dance area n food area......if they extended into garden where smoking area is would be a great place..

Great garden new managers have done well

Usually such a lovely pub with friendly locals but occasionally a very rude barmaid who skips songs on the purchased jukebox songs. Would not recommend if you’re under the age of 35 and don’t want to waste your money.

Love the goats, felt welcomed. Will definitely have another cheeky pint there again!

An amazing place to be , fabulously dog friendly and fun for the kids. Also for adults there are darts and a pool table a lounge bar for adults and a regular bar. I love that u can ask to feed the three goats in the garden,sadly they don't cook food . Definitely recommend going there for a drink.

I visited at about 5 o'clock in the afternoon and it was surprisingly busy although everybody was crowded round the bar so it was difficult getting served. I had a pint of Draught Bass and it was pretty awful, I can't recommend the ale here on that showing, very poor. *Update* Apparently there was a new landlord a few days before I visited so I will pop back to give it a fair chance.

Its a shame good pub but my kids age 19/20 went there yesterday and was asked for i.d and was told had to be 21 even tho they have been going there since they were 18 and it is there local, guess they will lose a lot of custom from partys and gatherings threw this descision.

Wonderful place great food and atmosphere, management are brilliant

Having decided not to visit here again whilst the previous management team was in place, I was pleased to hear that they have no gone. It is only fair that the new management team are not tarred with my previous 1 star review, hence the current 5 star review to offset that. I popped in briefly on a Sunday afternoon for a quick drink and the new management seem to be warm and welcoming, having turned the place back into a public house. I wasn't there long enough to form a full opinion or rating but will be back and will review again at some point in the future.

Went to the opening night now it's under new management. It's loads cleaner in there. They do evening meals now. They laid on a buffet, live singer and then some hilarious karaoke! Seem like nice people, be good for the pub if they stayed a while!

Warm friendly and cosy pub, went to a party in their rooms was lovely, would defitnately have parties there.

Attended the opening night of the new restaurant on Friday 1st December, food was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful. My lasagne was very tasty and my wife's lamb curry was to die for. Good selection of starters and desserts also. Enjoyed it so much, I took the family back there on Sunday to try the roast dinners. Generous portions, beautifully cooked meats and vegetables, and very good service. The bill was amazingly small. Such good value and very family-friendly atmosphere. Will definitely visit again soon.

The Obelisk's new landlord has reinstated the Tuesday evening quiz which I attended yesterday. Great fun and enjoyable, even though our team came last! Delicious sandwiches served for supper. The new landlord is very friendly, and the bar staff are lovely. I had not been here for some time due to the previous landlady's attitude, but I will now become a regular again.

Rude staff, nice garden don't think they will last there !!

I have never met such rude staff, the young girl is the worst!!! Belittles staff in front of customers and will only let regulars in, groups or younger crowds are either barred or made to feel so awkward they leave even if they are spending lots of money. They young lady has also had arguments with her boyfriend in front of the customers, there was lots of trouble and she kept shouting and crying until he left. I felt so uneasy I left. They have absolutely NO idea how to run a pub nor how to treat customers who are not locals.

Been half a dozen times with my partner an our little one, always had a nice time very relaxing garden with decent play area to prevent childen from being bored. Not enough family friendly pubs about these days. Staff have always been polite an helpful. Would recommand.

Good little pub somthing for everyone, a relaxing bar to sit an have a relaxing drink, great for familys big garden with lots to keep the little ones intertained. Plus they have Stella an Kroniburg on tap an a pool table if you want a drink with the lads. Not many family friendly pubs about these days so hope it keeps going.

Ignore the negative reviews!! This landlady doesn't put up with any nonsense from any one who is rude and takes the p**s in her pub. And so she shouldn't!! These people don't like it and write a negative review. Marie, the landlady, and her husband, have done a fantastic job with the pub. They have worked hard to refurbish both the inside and the outside space and it now looks like a pub from this decade rather than the dark dingy place it was before she took over. The staff are friendly and are always good for banter. The pub has excellent defined areas dependent on what you are visiting the pub for. The garden and children's play area is brilliant and the food is tremendous! Those curry's were spot on!! By the way, I am not a local. Nor am I a regular. I go in the pub once every two weeks or so and for me, it is easily the best pub in Woolston and probably one of the better pubs in Southampton. The only slight down-side for me is no Sky Sports but hey, I can watch that at home!! Ian.
