It’s rare for me to give a pub five stars but this place was such a pleasant find. We met friends here for dinner and from the moment we walked in we were enveloped in a cosy, friendly atmosphere. The interior is beautiful, real olde worlde vibes. The staff are friendly, cheerful, courteous and helpful. The food is well presented, portions are huge though and we left absolutely stuffed. No room for dessert which is a shame. It’s not surprising that you need to book a table. It deserves its popularity!

We both had the classic burger - the burgers were amazing, and the chips were perfectly crisp (there were also a lot of chips on the plate). If you are thinking of going here with your partner, family, or friends, I highly recommend getting a dessert. More specifically, the Belgium toffee waffle and the hot chocolate fudge cake are to die for! Overall, the experience was great and we will be visiting again.

I have eaten here often over the years. Firstly it was a family pub with a really good menu and food. Sold to the brewery and a few managers ran it but with the same menu. Now back in private hands is now a family run pub with a relaxed attitude and very good menu and chefs to match. Good quality food and plenty of it. Always expect and get a good quality meal. Never had the need to complain. Even at times of difficulty owners seem to overcome. Top of my list.

Having read the recent reviews I was a little worried for our usual visit but I can truly say the place is still great as ever and now with one of the best children’s play areas I have ever seen. The food is classical British with fantastic specials served in a great atmosphere even in these difficult times.I attended on the final day of the 50% offer and could see the huge demand put on them as they are so popular this pressure didn’t show in the quality of the food or the smiles behind the bar more the impatience of those trying to get tables when none were available which is a shame. If it’s 50% or full price this place will always be one of my favourites just as long as you book in advance.

Will be actively discouraging friends and family from visiting this pub again! Staff were working flat out on a boiling day and during the hour or so we were there we saw two separate members of staff get such a rollocking. It was completely embarrassing for everyone involved and it most certainly should not be carried out in front of, or, within earshot of paying customers. My partner and i came to The New Inn today where we had the nicest meal we’ve ever had here (quite an impressive feat!). We were supposed to come yesterday evening but unfortunately due to Storm Francis it wasn’t safe for the marquee service to run as usual. Mel, the landlady, phoned us in the afternoon in good time and the pub was even offering takeaway food with a generous discount at their own expense. We came down today to take advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and found a table in the garden as the weather had really cheered up. It was a lovely visit all round - as usual! P.S If you haven’t had the chocolate fudge cake here then you need to come!

If its good customer service your looking for , this is not the place. Having booked 2 weeks ahead for my husbands birthday, I received an answer phone message 3 hours before our booking to say, they had cancelled it due to bad weather and unable to serve in the marquee. When I called to query as to why they had left it so late to notify me, she was really rude, "I can't help the weather" were her exact words. Not even an offer to rebook us. It is now too late to book anywhere else. Disgusting service.

We were going to leave but told they had the ingredients to make 3. Waited an hour or so for food to arrive, where was the fish!!!! Tasted as if they had shared 1 into 3 with loads of cheesy potato on top, so basically it was a cheese & potato pie. Meat eaters had large meals but not restaurant standard. Its many years since I had a T bone steak as nobody sells them any more. Once I spotted this on the menu I had to visit. Honestly, I left stuffed. For £19.95 the steak was unbelievable , 16 ounces, tender, and cooked right, something even top restaurants dont seem capable of these days. My partner had the rump and cleaned her plate. Compared to the local pubs the menu is very good value , if you weigh up the cost of the dishes against what comes out I think it would be very hard to beat for value. On top of that the guy in charge was very friendly and welcoming, nice warm pub, this will be my new steakhouse from now on.

The pre-Christmas period is quite busy for us Rotarians, and for the second weekend in succession we were involved in helping-out at an event: this time however it was outside on what was a very chilly day. With no time to cook, some sort of main meal for ourselves and my son, who was helping-out too, was badly needed by the time we finished our duties. We had planned to visit a highly recommended pub for a late Sunday Lunch but couldn’t make a reservation. See my review of the Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol. So we decided to give the New Inn at Mayshill a try. We have visited here previously in the days before I was reviewing on TA. We had been impressed by the food then, so we parked-up and went inside to enquire about a table. The New Inn was busy and obviously we hadn’t booked, but we were given an unoccupied table that was available until 19:15. As it was about 16:30, this gave us more than enough time to eat and clear-off before the next party arrived. We studied the extensive menus including the Specials board, but my partner and I had pretty much already promised ourselves a Sunday Lunch. That option was still available that late afternoon, so it was just a matter of choosing from the runners: beef, pork, lamb, turkey or the nut-roast. The turkey and nut-roast were non-starters for us, so my partner chose beef and I chose lamb, but we would have gladly had the pork, it was a difficult choice. My son decided on the Steak and Real Ale pie. Food was quickly prepared and presented, meanwhile we just had time enough for some much-needed and warming coffee. On arrival the main meals did look good, and horseradish sauce and mint sauce followed after a short delay. With the roasts, the meat, albeit sliced far too thin, was plentiful, tasty and tender, but it was, together with the gravy, only just warm enough. The plates were warm, so I can only surmise that the meat and gravy had been hanging about, plated-up, and had got a bit cold. All the vegetables were reasonably hot but the carrots had been cooked far too long, and much the same for the beans, but the calabrese had more of a bite. The hot roast potatoes were good and crispy, the hot boiled potatoes were very well cooked and wonderfully waxy, but the Yorkshire pud was unlikely to have been home-made: a pity. Later, well after we finished our meals, we noticed that other roast dinners were being served, to nearby diners, with parsnips (one of my favourite root vegetables) but parsnips had been missing from our plates: grrrr!!! The meal was all edible apart from a tiny bit of fat from the meat.My son’s Steak and Real Ale Pie looked really excellent, this would have been my second choice after a roast (I like pies!) A very flaky puff-pastry lid was popped on top of a generous portion of meat and gravy, with chunky chips and a side salad. It all looked really appetizing. The meat was all very well-trimmed and the meal was served very hot in its own individual pie-dish, but the presence of the salad meant the plate wasn’t hot. The gravy had a good real ale flavour and was good and satisfyingly rich. The big fat chips were crispy enough, and the middles were fluffy and hot, even allowing for the cooler plate. The side salad looked good, but for my son, like most teenagers, is a boundary rarely pushed. We just about had room for desserts, my partner had the chocolate fudge cake, with a really gooey chocolate sauce and pouring cream. This despite being a very plentiful portion was all consumed with much glee. My son had three generous boules of the ‘Marshfield Farm Chocolate Heaven’ ice-cream. He has had this many-times before and, as we regularly stock some of this excellent fare at home, he knew what to expect, but he only just finished it! I had, for the third main meal in a row, crumble and custard. The first time had been at an ‘up market’ fish and chip emporium in Bath, the previous Friday. That had been woeful: just under £6, for a very small and thoroughly underwhelming portion of something, that was described as, ‘apple and red fruit crumble’, but wasn’t. The accompanying custard had been good, but was a small and mean portion too. The second occasion had been dinner the previous evening at home. That had been wonderful: great red fruits with crunchy crumble with lashings of hot custard, baked by a friend and bought for a couple of quid on a charity stall, the weekend before. My third crumble was with this meal, and it was excellent and probably the best: as it was big, served piping-hot in an oven-to-table dish, with a generous apple and blackberry fruit filling, and a very substantial portion of great and hot custard served in a jug. The crumble was magnificently crunchy and not too sweet, simply exquisite. At £4.95 it was worth every penny and probably more! I feel like sending a photo to the fish and chip restaurant to show them what they obviously have no idea how to make!!That was it, no appetites remained unsated, all food (apart from the salad) had been eaten and most of it had been good and appreciated. Service had been very good, pleasant and obliging (especially allowing us to have a table at such short notice). This was a 7 out of 10 meal but it was far better than ‘average’ but probably not as good as ‘very good’ which are the ‘good’ ratings available to me here on TA. All the elements to make a very good meal were there, so it gets 4 out of 5 here on TA. With a little more attention to detail, this (TA very good) meal would be a, 5 out of 5, excellent meal. We will be returning.

We have been regular customers of the New Inn for years and regularly chose it as our venue for most family birthdays etc. We had pre booked at table for the evening on Father's Day. after half an hour of arriving I had to go to the bar to ask when are starters were going to be ready ( only cheesy garlic bread) . The barman chased it up and it was brought out about 2 minutes after. After another 1/2 an hour nobody had come to collect our starter plates so my husband asked one of the waiters if he could possible take them away which he did. This was now about 7pm. After a further 20 mins/30 mins still no main courses....Other customers around us had come in after us and had been served their main courses by now and we had pre-ordered!!!! I went to the bar and was asked who collected our starter plates as he had not told the chef that we were ready for our mains!!! I was advised that 10 % would be deducted from the bill for the inconvenience. When the food arrived it was ok but not up to the usual standard ( 2 had cajun chicken which was overcooked) but as we had 2 children with us ( 2 and 4) we didn't complain further as it was already far too late, hence why we had booked for 6pm. I hope when we next visit the service and quality of the food will be back to the New's Inn's normal standards

Not been here in a while. Called in on off chance there was room on the Sunday evening of a bank holiday. Most tables seemed reserved but the manager looked at the bookings and fitted us in.

This was our first visit since it changed hands, everything seemed the same; still good food and generous portions. There has been no change to the menu, I guess if it works why change it. Would recommend.

Excellent food for a good price. Friendly, efficient staff. We arrived at a busy period so had to wait for a table and the food took a while to arrive. However, when we came on a different, quieter day, it was relatively quick. The wait did not matter as the pub has a nice, relaxed ambience and we were not in a tearing rush...and one expects things to take a bit longer when busy. Everything seems to run smoothly.

Just found out this pub changed hands October 2018 and This Landlord lives on the premises. He has retained the services of one of the previous chefs and has hired another from another local pub that closed. We have used this pub previously but not for a long while as quality faltered.

Went for a celebration meal with friends. All pre ordered ! Upon arrival the landlord/manager was very rude and we felt intimidated. Barman also was very abrupt! We sat down and had to wait 45 mins for food even though pre ordered. Sadly the celebration was marred as we had to sit on 2 tables so the party was split up. Waiting staff were miserable and no manners. Food eventually arrived no problem with food. Just feel since the new management have taken over customer services has slipped. We all left with a bitter taste due to the way we were treated. Shame as this pub was once a joy to visit

Came here as passing on way home and have heard so much about it. Wasn't disappointed. Lovely traditional country pub not many of them about these days. Staff were very attentive. Food was lovely and very good portions. Would love to come back and wish it was my local. Thank you for a lovely dinner. You have a great team and we felt very welcome.

Last night (24/11/18) together with some friends we went to the New Inn Mayshill, we have been to this pub on many occasions before and as a result of our experiences last night will now be very low on our list of places to eat out.

We use this pub on a regular basic,it serves generous meals and has a good atmosphere. We booked for family get together, two of the meals arrived just warm. They replaced curly fries but not the chicken. It was not busy, which in itself was unusual, so no excuse for cold meals. Staff not tentative and not interested. After our visit I have heard of two others that have visited in the last couple of weeks were not happy with their experience. Now found out that it has new owners, not a great start for them and a lot of Christmas party’s up coming. Unfortunately I have cancelled our company meal basis of our last visit. Having said that I will give them a chance with another visit but just the two of us. In the past we have had excellent service and good quality food with friendly helpful staff, left very disappointed.

The food here has to be the best. The portions are massive and I have never managed more than 1 course. Perfect in the winter with the open fire

Right off the main road, with adequate parking, this is a typical pub restaurant. It's an old pub, clean and well-knit, with good English beers on draft.

This is a nice traditional pub with a varied menu. There is table service and all the staff members we spoke to were helpful and friendly. The food portions were very large and neither of us could finish our meals.

Watch out for the excess car parking charges payable at the till on your way out if you dare to get comfortable and have more than one drink. The toilets were utterly disgusting. I definitely would not recommend this place.

What a wonderful experience, food was amazing, everything cooked to perfection, starters, main courses and desserts, great service, ideal ambience and such amazing staff, all smiling, polite and super efficient. Prosecco on arrival was a lovely welcome. Favourite member of staff; Joe, lovely young man. Live singer. 15/10 thank you, can’t wait to do it again!

There are, arguably, two reasons to visit Downend. One is on a summer’s afternoon to watch Downend CC play cricket with the bar in full swing and plenty of boundaries being scored as the ground is relatively small; the other is to pay a visit to Melanie’s Kitchen. This delicatessen shop is a positive cornucopia of cheeses, bakery items, biscuits, chutneys, artisan breads etc etc. The man who serves at the cheese counter (who I assume is not Melanie!) is a fountain of knowledge on local cheeses and knows all of the local cheese producers, when their cheeses are at their best and is happy to provide advice to ensure that you will leave well satisfied having enjoyed a sensory and culinary experience second to none. It’s full marks from me.

appalling service, rude management and staff. incompetent serving, was told it was an hours wait for food when other tables after our group received theirs in 10 minutes. Management of cafe refusing to work, simply stood next to the till. Museum was ok but would not recommend to anyone at any point
