We made the reservation through Booking and received the corresponding confirmation both by email and in the application. Likewise, we were charged the amount of the night days before arrival. Days before our stay, we tried to contact the hotel on several occasions to inform us of the arrival time, but we only received meaningless automatic messages (response that the hotel staff was not available, informing us of the check out without even having arrived, etc). To our surprise, we arrived at the hotel and there was no one at the reception, only a sign that said if there was no one we should go to the bar across the street. When we got there, a girl told us that we had to wait because the receptionist had gone for change. We waited a long time at the reception and when the receptionist arrived, with a bad face and talking to us without even looking at us, we told her our name and she told us that they did not have any reservation with that name. We showed him the Booking confirmation by email and in the app, and he kept telling us that we didn't have any reservations (while he was chatting on his computer) and talking to us in a derogatory way. We constantly told him that we had confirmation and that they had also sent us automatic messages to our chat through Booking and he said that it was a mistake but we had all the conversations and we showed them to him. A while later he told us to show him how much we had paid and the confirmation, which we did since we had everything in order. A while later (without speaking to us) he put the keys on the counter, simply saying what room number it was and left, without giving us any explanation or asking for any kind of apology. When we got to the room our anguish only increased: it was not the room shown in the photos, it was full of humidity, the furniture was torn, the window closure did not work and our room overlooked a patio with very little space. zero security. We do NOT recommend this accommodation at all, it is very expensive, the staff treatment was terrible and the facilities were terrible. We just wanted to leave.

They don’t have a review or star option for the food here, so I’m here to rave about the Sunday carvery in this historic old inn and pub! It’s honestly one of the BEST roast dinners I’ve EVER had and it’s great value for the amount of food. There is a buffet option of Beef, Pork and Turkey..always tender and falls apart with a fork and so well seasoned. I always go for the beef. The roast potatoes are crispy and seasoned on the outside and flakey mash inside. The honey roasted parsnips are amazing and the gravy! Great consistency and full of flavour. You could totally get by and have your fill as a veggie only option as well. At £13/person and half price for kids, it’s a great Sunday option…only wish it was available every day of the week. Their service is top notch, with a great mix of regulars/locals and drop ins. Call ahead to book a table on busier/holiday weekends. Fab job to all…see you Sunday!

Booked a room at The New Inn instead of the usual Premier Inn to try something new and because the room was cheaper than Premier Inn. Wish I had paid the extra! Good points: The New Inn itself is full of beautiful ye olde world charm with original wooden beams, crooked windows, uneven floors and a maze of corridors and doors. The room itself had a very low beam that even at 5ft 2 inches, my head could touch it! I felt like a giant! Bad points: The room I was given faced the covered courtyard (which sparkled with lights), which is part of the pub area. The pub was open late with karaoke until midnight. The window was single glazing and did not shut properly (part of the charm of an old building) which meant the noise of every badly sung note (and the good ones!), drinks being ordered, sad jokes and chat up lines plus the smoke from those taking a break from life drifted up into my room. This probably wouldn't have been so bad if the bed was comfortable. However, I felt like I had a bed that was as old as the Inn itself, with springs galore digging into me so much that I am inclined to book a chiropractor to help realign my back. The breakfast was the same price as Premier Inn but much lower in quality and quantity with the two saddest fried eggs I have ever seen. The vegetarian sausages cooked to order were practically inedible, dry and literally grey in flavour. The coffee was very disappointing. As I was packing, housekeeping walked into my room without even knocking. Overall, the New Inn itself is an amazing building in a great location but not worth the convenience, the money or back ache.

We called in Easter Saturday for lunch around 12.30. I entered the pub on th right, but there are a couple of steps which was not suitable for mum and her stroller. I asked at the bar if they served food outside. The staff member said if we went over to the reception area, they were serving a carvery and it was on the flat. We went over, it was popular, we were shown to a table near to the carvery. The meat choice was pork, gammon or turkey. I have no tolerance to pork, but was going to have the turkey. The staff were all very busy serving food and taking orders. We waited a while and observed two staff, one male and one female use the same knife and fork to carve each of the meat joints. This is not good practice, especially for me. We asked for the main menu. We were informed that there would be a 40 minute wait. We decided this was not going to be suitable. Before leaving, mum had a word with the male manager, expressing our disappointment with their food handling practice. He said he would have a word with them. We left and had a super meal at Robert Raikes.

I can honestly say this is the first time in my life I've left a bad review for any establishment. Myself and the hubby stopped today at The New Inn for the cavery the carvey itself was fine small but fine. We then ordered dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding, when I started to eat it I soon found out it had been burnt absolutely black at the bottom and to make matters worse it had plastic attached to it - it was a microwave pudding not home made - the chef must have left the plastic on. It took 15 minutes (this is a conservative estimate ) to attract the attention of the waitress, I told her the problem she took the pudding away and 10 minutes later a different waitress brought our bill and said 'you have to pay at the bar'. I went to the bar as instructed and politely asked about the pudding and was told we do microwave the puddings but there was no plastic - I said sorry but this isn't good enough. I was told by the waitress to stand to the side if I wanted to talk to the manager as she needed to serve other customers. She then went on to serve the man behind me and said to him 'sorry for the delay she (pointing at me is complaining and wants money off) this lead to the other customer verbally abusing me telling me what did I expect as the staff are only kids and I'd got a bad attitude! I had been polite at all times and had not asked for money off at any point I just wanted to highlight the issue as if it happened again someone, a child or elderly person, could choke on the plastic. The manager eventually came and took the price of the pudding off my bill telling me it was raisins in the pudding not plastic !!! It wasn't it was burnt pieces of plastic on the bottom. Yes it wasn't the most expensive food £31 for the 2 of us for carvery and pudding but I would expect it to be edible and if you have a complaint not expect the waitress to tell another customer so they can have a go at you ! So my advice avoid at all costs much better places to eat and the customer service is no existent at The New Inn. On average I eat out 3 to 4 times a week and have eat in restaurants, pubs, hotels etc all across the U.K. and abroad and can honestly say this has been my worst experience ever of customer service.

Arrived for cavary lunch. Staff didn't care. Tried to organise drinks seperatly to food (as there 20+ of us, we didn't want to have to work out the cost of each drink etc). Should have been able to order drinks at bar, kept being told that we weren't supposed to, it would just go on the table bill, tried to explain that we didn't want to do that and explain why, staff didn't care, told us to to go back. Some times manage to order a drink at the bar, some times didn't. The woman who seemed to be in charge was the worst, very rude and just didn't want to hear. Of those who didn't order at the bar, at least 4 drinks arrived after we had eaten the food. The place wasn't busy so couldn't use that excuse. The food itself was poor quality, ran out of half the stuff before many of us had been served. Nothing special, just dull and tasteless. Overall: rude staff, very slow service for drinks.

The waitress showed us to a table without a smile, she took our orders without a smile. we were served our carvery by the chef, without a smile, I ordered a bottle of Chardonnay without checking the menu for the cost. It was a poor quality wine but drinkable. The shock came with the bill and we did have to get the manager and complain. At last a smile! The waitress had charged us for the wrong type of Chardonnay and our bill was promptly reduced by £10. still expensive but such a lovely place has to make up the cheap carvery price somehow. Greeted by manageress who showed us to a table for 8 in an alcove however close to other diners. Far too big for 2 people so we found a table for two tucked away in the corner at the very far end of the enormous restaurant. The whole area was empty and completely characterless/soulless. Waitress eventually came and took our drinks order. Serving our drinks, she then took our food order. The salmon was nicely cooked however smothered in an unpleasant sauce which I scrapped off and left to one side. Would have been better if the sauce had come in a separate jug. My husband had a very ordinary vegetable curry - nothing special at all. We both agreed that the food was average though priced accordingly. We continued to sit alone without anyother customers coming in - the prevous dinners had left and it was ages before the waitress came to clear / offer dessert. We asked for the bill, paid and left. The waitress was perfectly pleasant; just very scarce. The restaurant is far too large, therefore uninviting. Not at all impressed. We did look at the bar areas and noted a bar menu which didn't interest us. Offering real ale, the New Inn did have quite a few people standing and drinking in the courtyard however we decided the New Inn was definitely not for us and would hesitate to recommend it to others.

The meat was lovely with generous portions although they had run out of beef. The veg was only just warm and they had run out of stuffing and crackling. The waitress did offer to reheat some veg for us when we informed her and she was good enough to explain that we had called at the wrong time of day as the food had been on the hotplate for a number of hours when we sat to eat! On paying, we once again explained we were not very impressed with the food to which she responded by informing is they had decided to stop serving it and switched to the normal menu instead. At £6.95 and £3.80 for a bottle of beer I was hoping for better. Perhaps quality improves if you call closer to dinner time?

Dont get me wrong, I like peas, good peas , but the not the discarded civil war ammunition commonly served by too many establishments.Creamy leeks, carrots, sprouts, red cabbage , roast and boiled spuds and more.Fill you plate and help yourself to gravy and sauce. It was plently! The bigger appetite can buy a bigger portion but phew, I woulld not manage that.Loads of staff nearby to clear too.A slight downside is that tiny parts of this ancient building need some tlc, and I would include the toilets in this, but heck, i went to eat , not view.Good value in a little oasis of calm and quiet, the perfect antidote to Christmas shopping.

This is a wonderful medieval hotel with a courtyard, gallery and ghosts. Good choice of beer but bar meal was a bit disappointing and it seems to be a bit run down - shame because it could be sensational.

But now we know why the restaurant was empty.worst carvery ever!!!

found this by accident but had planned to look for it. Restaurant almost empty but menu looked good and the food was very nice. It is a shame that there is such a hideous din from the pub opposite which had karaoke that just circulated around the courtyard! We wouldn't stay here for that reason but it was a lovely place and lots of history.

Lovely charming hotel as you entered the courtyard. Let down by staff who could not tell you where your room was even though it was through the door and up the stirs of the bar we enquired in. Staff generally on mobiles sitting in courtyard. Breakfast staff disinterested. Pity as it should have been a lot better.

So i fancied a couple of hours watching the footy being away from home and grabbing some lunch. The New Inn is a fantastic looking and historical set of buildings from the outside, ideally placed for travellers and tourists visiting Gloucester, right in the heart of the City, but i also know it sells some local brews and regardless of reviews has a fairly good restaurant. On this occasion i ordered from the limited Bar Menu (when you can find a menu, they need to print some more off as they admitted)To be honest the food did the job but it was fairly bland and i had to go looking for cutlery and condiments when the food arrived as none were provided. (Not good)The flickering and loss of picture on the TV on occasion was bearable but the noise from staff trying for nearly 45 minutes to get 2 pumps working became a pain in what was mostly an empty bar.I understand the historical value and the look but to be honest its very very tired inside and listening to the very few other visitors coming and going they seem to agree. The locals seem to love it and the staff whilst more friendly to them were pleasant but this place could be so much more. The footy result might have been the downer, but next time ill just go for the food and music at Cafe Rene and give the TV and The New Inn a miss. Cheers.

Friday evening, Gourmet Society member, booked and expected a pleasant evening. We ordered starters and main course. Soup and both steaks were unavailable. We waited more than 20 minutes for the starters, during when another couple got up and walked out as they had waited so long. The couple next to us said their steak (probably the last one!) has been returned for cooking as ordered. I asked when we could expect our starters, and when these hadn't arrived 5 minutes, I asked for the manager. A scruffy, rude male appeared, and when I said we were going to write to the Gourmet Society and review on TripAdvisor, he said I couldn't threaten him with TripAdvisor. We walked out and went to our trusted favourite in Gloucester, Vinings at the waterfront!

Just had drinks here with friends. Dark pub but a few tables and chairs outside. After listening to a historic fact about lady jane grey staying there my half pint tipped over into my lap and over my friend!!! No one touched it! It was not on the end of the table and my hands were in my lap and no the table was not wonky!! Spooky!!! They do walking ghost tours from here every Sunday 5pm-6pm not something I would be interested in as I'm a wimp ha! Enjoy if you are brave enough though!

A wonderful looking old building with a beautifully enclosed courtyard, complete with restaurant, bar and coffee shop. The rooms are situated upstairs, some being two flights, so not really suitable for older or disabled people. Room 201 The Lady Jane Grey Suite was in need of some minor maintenance as the hairdryer was 12 months behind inspection and the power socket fell out of the wall. The room could also benefit from some tasteful redecoration as the medieval styled red bed covered four poster didn't match the 1980s teak furniture and peach and green colour scheme.

Ho soggiornato qui con la mia famiglia (2 adolescenti) per tre notti, il prezzo era ottimo per quattro persone , poi ci serviva solo un punto d'appoggio per delle gite! All'arrivo scopriamo che dovevamo pagare in anticipo!

Needed to break a journey from North Wales to Gatwick and not having visited Gloucester for some years, chose here.Living out in the sticks, when ever we travel location/traffic noise is a big consideration. This is a really old building set right in the middle of the cities pedestrian zone handy for all there is to see and do.Bearing in mind the difficulties of such an old building the rooms were adequate, but attention to details would help in that things like the television didn't work.Breakfast was your standard "plastic" help yourself which you seem to get everywhere these days; during our stay the hotel had a number of foreign guests' what they must think of our cuisine I am not sure.Plenty of city centre restaurants handy. The hotel has a 24hour concessionary rate at a multi storey car park just a short walk away; it took several attempts before we could find out how to access it.

We sought out this very historic old carriage inn to have lunch during our recent visit. The staff were not friendly and the food selection was limited. Our order took quite awhile to arrive and they would not even accept credit cards, one had to pay by cash.I would recommend only coming by this place to take pictures (as it looks really neat from the outside) but skip it and go someplace else that values clients if you want a nice meal.

We decided to go to the other bar and get a drink ourselves. We both had a starter and main course and was bitterly disappointed with all. The food was of poor quality and the service was apalling. There was only one member of staff on and although she did her best, we had to wait 40 Mins for our starter.Would I eat here again, not unless it is the last restaurant on the planet and then I would have to think twice.

We stayed at The New Inn for 2 nights bed and breakfast. Our room (110) was at the front of the hotel, comfortable, clean but on occasion noisy, only to be expected. The room was also on a slope, which is part of the hotels charm, however in the middle of the night, after a few drinks, a little disorientating. The staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was nice with a variety of choices. The hotel has lots of charm and is a lovely place right in the town centre, within easy reach of bars and pubs and a 5 minute stroll from the docks.............however, if you are looking for an early night or a quiet break, be warned the music and entertainment doesn't finish until at least midnight. Also useful to know is if you park in Bruton NCP car park you can ask for a discount card at the hotel reception, it's not much but it helps. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again if we were visiting Gloucester in the future.

5* price - £43 per room for 1 night, includes breakfast for 2 & location to town centre4* room decoration, massive bathroom & cupboard space3* comfortable king size bed2* heating in room1* shabby and dark reception area, strict check in times (even 20 mins early was unnaceptable to the receptionist, even when we explained we had travelled and were going to a beer festival)0* - the toilet was broken and didn't flush, the carpets were filthy, unhoovered and large stains all over the carpet, I was afraid to walk with bare feet - the sheets and duvet were stained with blood and 'hairs' of a different colour to myself and my husband - no pillow cases on some of the pillows - whole room was thick with dust and looked dirty - noise from pipes throughout the whole night, clanging every 15 mins It is such a shame that I gave this hotel such a poor rating as from the outside and historically it looked really good. All it needs is a bit of TLC and it could be comfortable. The receptionist could have been more welcoming. I would not stay here again, and although we paid budget, I have stayed other hotels and paid the same and have had much better cleanliness.

So glad we never eat in there has the breakfast was horrible couldn't even eat the sausages. And no brown sauce,

Went for an overnight stay with friends for my birthday. Lovely building , fab architecture , staff on the whole friendly. Fully realise its very budget but more like a B and B than a Hotel. Went to our room, absolutely filthy . Thick dust , filthy carpet and a toilet brush covered in excrement plus blood on the walls , door and wall of corridor outside! My husband explained this to the Lady on duty who moved us to another room that was much better but still shabby with an out of date safety certificate on the falling apart antique hair dryer in the bathroom. Breakfast was what you would expect for budget but I asked for brown sauce and was told they had none ! All the guests were handing round the nearly empty bottles of tomato sauce ! We had to share a glass for our juice between us all! Have no problem really with all this as you get what you pay for but whatever the tariff you expect one thing and that's a clean place. We made light of it all and had a great weekend but my advice to you would be avoid The New Inn like the plague. I strongly suspect the guest before us in room 209 died of it!

My carvery was edible, not especially hot, certainly nothing special, it filled a gap is all i can say. However, mum's lunch was dismal, very small potato and even smaller salad, wouldn't have satisified a 5 year old. will not return which is a shame as it's a beautiful place and we even toyed with the idea of going to stay there sometime, that was until we ate and now of course, reading the reviews.
