I was very disappointed with the panini I ordered. It wasn’t a panini it was a toasted baguette roll and the filling was very sparse. What was there was nice but it needed more. The coffee was lovely though.

We nearly missed this brilliant, not so little, place. We had disappointing coffees until our last morning! Had it not been for the little tables outside would have only gone in to browse the books. Outstandingly good cappuccino and Americano brought all the way outside by a super friendly lady. Go inside... It's massive! Do not walk past!

Called here for lunch. Although the vegetarian menu is quite limited, the quality of food served was all excellent. We opted for roasted vegetables and vegan garlic sauce wrapped in a Panini with salad and home made coleslaw, a home made tomato and lentil soup and Welsh Rarebit. Hot chocolate and coffees for drinks. The portion size was generous and service was polite and efficient. The cafe bit is at the back of the shop on a mezzanine floor where there is plenty of space.

Our first stop for coffee on arrival in Cockermouth. Didn’t, on this occasion, browse in the bookshop first - we’ll be back to do that leter in the week! Our need for a good coffee sent us straight to the cafe and we were not disappointed. The flat whites were very good as were the scones. Plenty of distance between tables in the cafe and a one way system in the shop too. All in all a great start to the week.

Walking through a lovely independent bookshop into an airy café where great coffee and tasty food is on offer sums up exactly what I want when I visit a beautiful British town such as Cockermouth. This friendly vegetarian café serves both innovative and traditional food and handles each with elegance. The freshness of the dishes is plain to see. Everything to do with the Covid-19 'new normal' is well handled. The toilets were immaculate.

No estaba ocupado .

Decided to try this place for lunch after a recommendation from an artist at the monthly craft fair in the methodist church - and very glad we did. We wouldn't have spotted it without her advice. It's a small space tucked at the back of The New Bookshop, and whilst it was busy while we were there, it wasn't crowded or noisy. There was a simple menu with several specials, we both opted for the soup of the day and a cheese scone, and a nice hot coffee to chase the October chills away. The soup was excellent (tomato and lentil, if you're interested, with a sprinkling of watercress) and the accompanying cheese scone was divine. Everything was very reasonably priced, and we'll definitely pop back in next time we're in Cockermouth.

The idea was to visit the Cockermouth bookshop, and enjoy a light lunch while topping up with some reading material. As always the book shop was excellent. Required books were in stock and purchased. One or two optional books were not in stock but were promised the following morning by helpful informed and friendly staff. So, did we cross an invisible planetary line when visiting the cafe? There were plenty of free tables but none of them seemed to be cleared of debris left by previous diners. We sat down and I personally cleared the table and moved the dirty crockery to a kitchen area, totally unnoticed by any of the three staff. In fact all of these staff seemed unaware that there were customers in their cafe. After 5 minutes waiting in vain, we called it a day, and retreated to the High Street and lunch elsewhere. Our departure, like our arrival, passed without notice. Each and every member of staff was busy doing something, although quite how that "something" translated into customer service remains a mystery.

As the name implies, this is a little cafe tucked away at the back of a bookshop in the high street. Is is a small area over two floors and does light snacks (such as bacon and beans on toast or soup and bread), porridge, teas and coffees and cold drinks. However, the stars of the show are the selection of cakes - a good choice and good-sized portions. Also the staff are very friendly. The one downside is the terrible noise from the tables and chairs scraping on the stone floor. It cost a few pence to but pads that affix to the legs of the furniture. An investment that would make the place the tranquil haven a cafe in a bookshop should be.

Eventually I had to return to the counter to ask for our meals which arrived after another short delay. Other guests, obviously regulars who were recognised by the staff, were served quite promptly while we waited.Perhaps they were just having a bad day, who knows. When we got them, the meals were quite good so we might try it again to see if this was the normal service or just a fluke. I have rated them as 'Average' as a sort of balance between poor service and good food!On a positive note, the bookshop has made a remarkable recovery after being completely swamped in Cockermouth's recent floods - all credit to them.

The food is always delicious and home made. Very child friendly and ideal being in a book shop. I often bring the grandsons after school

The book shop is great and deserves a boost after the flooding. The cafe is also fine for a coffee and cake. I always drop in.

Good home made food at reasonable prices in the cafe which is tucked away at the back of the shop and thus not evident from the street, The shop itself is a bookworms delight. Almost always spend more on books than food

A beautiful shop to browse and have a coffee and cake and then browse again. My only problem with this shop is that sometimes the service at the till is less than effusive. Having put quite a lot of business their way buying books, cards and tokens, I've often found myself feeling a little deflated when it comes to contact with the staff. I often feel like I'm inconveniencing the staff by requiring them to put my purchases through the till when there's obviously so many better hints they'd rather be doing. Books are clearly sooooo much cheaper online so to justify paying more, you expect your local business to provide. joyous personal touch ....hasn't happened for me yet at The New Bookshop.I live in hope.

My husband and I called into the bookshop since I could see that it also served coffee. It was a lovely shop with a wealth of interesting books. We had a lovely coffee and a slice of ginger cake which were all delicious.

The New Bookshop was recommended by friends - we weren't disappointed. My flat white was perfect; just as it should be made. We also had the warm brie and bacon quiche; beautifully presented with salad - delicious. We bought a few books and maps on the way out. An enjoyable stop.

Having been let into the secret of how to make the perfect flat white coffee by the chief barista at the Art Gallery in Leeds I have failed until recently to track down another place that is in the same class. Until, that is, I discovered the New Bookshop in Cockermouth. Their product has superb flavour and a creamy top that reaches my idea of perfection. That's how I see it anyway and I hope you'll agree. Oh - and don't forget to buy a book or two.

We didn't have long in Cockermouth - just passing through - but wanted a coffee and cake so we were delighted to find this very smart coffee shop at the back of the New Bookshop. My wife is very particular about having a small coffee rather than the buckets that many places serve and we were pleased that they were happy to serve her americano in a tea cup. We both had a slice of home-made tea loaf which came with two portions of butter each; very good cake! Overall a pleasure. Good toilet facilities too!

What a find; eats, reads, and reclines :) A lovely local bookshop complete with its own small cafe, it is a lovely place to browse the shelves and then indulge. Set in the beautiful town of Cockermouth, The New Bookshop is a bit of a one stop shop. The food is mostly sandwiches, paninis, soups, cakes & pastries, but they also have an excellent range of beverages too, Their spiced chai latte was new to me, and it wont be the last either, but oh, the Jennings beer & chocolate cake ... just do it!

You're really spoilt for choice for cafes in Cockermouth but the new bookshop is wonderfully unique. The range of books is excellent, often will find books you can't get in places like Waterstones. Very friendly staff as well!My husband loves the cheese scones here and the chilli jam that comes with them is excellent. There's a lovely peppery aftertaste to it. Both the tea and coffee is great as well.
