Highly recommend! As a family of vegetarians it’s always difficult to find a restaurant that doesn’t offer the standard ‘vegan burger’ or ‘vegetable curry’! However, we visited late afternoon, after moving our son into his uni accommodation and wow it was the nicest meal we have had in a restaurant. We would highly recommend the Tofu Mapo and the Tofu Thai curry; very tasty and filling! Definitely looking forward to returning.

Hadn't booked a table but was immediate attended by more than one helpful team member, taking a table outside in the NE sunshine. Extensive menu. I choose the Teriyaki Salmon as my main. Every mouthful was to die for. Good portion of salmon, rice with pak choi, carrots and tenderstem broccoli cooked to perfection. The service was superb. Our main server was Abbi who made sure we were happy; checking in on us regularly but without being a pain in the neck. Abbi was a joy - friendly, good fun and great so get job. I can't wait to visit my Northern family again so I can come back to The Muddler. My stepmum said it was the best meal she'd ever had. Brilliant.

i went to the muddler the other week and the food was great, we had the katsu curry and it was delicious and filled with rich flavour, we also had the sleeping volcano sushi and let me tell you, this sushi is to die for! As a hot lover this definitely ticked the boxes. We were served by the girl with blue hair, she was so sweet and friendly.10/10 customer service thank you so much (sorry didn’t get your name) would definitely come here again 😊

Really lovely meal and according to our 11 yo, the best Miso soup ever! Food was delicious and the service the perfect mix of efficient and friendly- without over doing it. Only gave 4 star for food as we have experienced better sushi and the pork belly could have been cooked further for us for a more tender dish, but minor detail as we had such a lovely time. Thanks to Amelia and Emily for being so welcoming and looking after us!

I visited during the 2024 Newcastle Restaurant Week, when I anticipated that this restaurant would be showcasing its top-rated dishes. They were excluded from the Restaurant Week menu. I had sushi. It was okay. Certainly not ot a restaurant that I will hurry to return to.

Tonight we enjoyed a wonderful meal at The Muddler on Grey Street - some really top notch grub. We used the Restaurant Week menu and enjoyed a range of dishes from Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings, to Mapo Tofu, to Vermicelli Noodles. The ambience of the restaurant was lovely, staff were friendly and inviting, and the value for money was not bad in the end. £15 for 2 four-piece sushi or £25 for 3 small plates and a side. The quality of the food was EXQUISITE. However, don't get the Mapo Tofu if you can't handle a runny nose from the spice. Tasty, but it has some kick! After drinks, it came to about £140 for four people to each have the small plates option. Slightly higher end price-wise but it was a fancy evening treat, for sure. They also handled allergens really nicely as well; I was asked when we sat down and they didn't make a huge fuss of it, just gave me a folder so I could check the options I was considering for allergens. 10/10 would definitely recommend and will be visit again!

I can’t believe how much the food service and quality in this restaurant has disappointed me. I was so excited to take my boyfriend here since I enjoyed my last visit but it has significantly proven that it does not meet its standards anymore. We waited almost 1 hour for our food to arrive and when it did, the rice was as hard as Steve Harvey’s head. When they offered to remake the food for my boyfriend, the salmon on his dish looked like it was on the sun bed for years. A simple dish such as adobo fried rice wasn’t even made properly, it came as oily sticky rice pudding. I hate to complain, but this experience really wasn’t great. Not worth your money.

Great food, lovely for a date night! We did feel a bit exposed on our table as it was right next to another in the middle, service was really slow and we ended up having to ask for menus after being sat for 10 minutes and cutlery because we can’t do chopsticks. But apart from that it was a lovely meal and I would recommend for the food!

Went for a late dinner last night (9:15). Sat down next to a couple who had been there since 7:30. They said it had taken them 30 mins to get a drink and that they had waited extremely long for their food. We had the opposite experience, service felt rushed, we had ordered and eaten and paid in about 45 minutes. Our table was booked from 9:15-10:45 but we were out at 10:00! Walked past the restaurant 10 mins later and it had been completely emptied… During the meal I went to the loo and came back to see my plates had been cleared with food I was eating still on them. All dishes came out together (starters and mains), and my partner agrees that it felt like we had to rush our meal because the servers or management wanted to begin closing. Why offer a late dinner table 9:15-10:45 if you are going to close the restaurant before the booking is over?

Lovely establishment very nicely located on the high street. The service was excellent with the wait staff being very attentive. the atmosphere of the venue is also great, however the food lacks a little, especially for the price. Not the cheapest establishment, but ordered the duck spring rolls and vegetable tempura starters, both were fine, not amazing. Mains ordered: Crispy pork belly and Mapo Tofu both again fine but nothing special. portion size was massive with a mountain of rice for both dishes but all 4 dishes just lacked the flavors which other restaurants can provide. 3/5. Wouldn't go back as there are better places in Newcastle.

Lovely meal with friends, food and drinks were lovely and well priced. Only issue we had was the time slot ran out before we could consider any dessert, food took quite a while to come out after ordering, and once those plates were cleared we weren't offered anything else. We were then left until the slot was up before anyone came back to us. Only downside to the evening.

Unfortunately we had a not so pleasant visit to the Muddler on Saturday evening. We had previously booked online for 2 people, paying a £10 fee for this, but due to a change of plans we had an extra person eating with us. Due to needing to send a WhatsApp in order to change bookings which was majorly inconvenient, we instead decided to arrive to our booking 30 minutes early in order to see if there was a possibility of getting seated as a 3. We knew this may not be possible due to the small nature of this restaurant but thought trying would be better than not showing up. We were shouted to at the door by a very rude gentleman behind the bar who seemed greatly inconvenienced at our presence. When we asked about adding the extra person, he simply pointed to the table which had two seats and said 'that's your table'. We asked again thinking he had misunderstood but he abruptly said that we had only booked a table of two. Obviously it is completely understandable for the restaurant not being able to cater to our now larger party but the way in which we were spoken to felt completely out of order for the request we had. We left the restaurant and had a lovely meal at Kaltur- would definitely recommend! Having been sent an email asking for feedback from the Muddler and explaining our poor experience, we got yet another poor response from Jonny Lodge Customer Experience Manager stating 'it was unfair to say the staff were not accommodating' when in fact the issue lied with the rudeness of staff. Yet another example of this company not understanding the needs of the customer. Overall a terrible experience from walking into the restaurant to the follow up of management after the visit.

Great for a meal with a small group where you can all share food. Cocktails are also great here and the service has always been excellent. Atmosphere is relaxed but it still feels like an upmarket place without being stuffy. It’s split into two parts and both are cosy in size but big enough to still have atmosphere.

I gave 3 stars for food. The reason is i felt the way the food was presented and prepared/cooked. It could have been elevated. I had higher expectations, and to be honest, i was let down. The portions size for the sashimi was a huge disappointment, 3 tiny slices. The fried rice was fine but not worth it, in my opinion. The best part was the sushi, but even that was okay. I wasn't wowed. That's what i look for in Japanese ( pan asian ) flavours. The restaurant itself was gorgeous, very welcoming. I loved my espresso martini! Lovely selection of Japanese spirits and soju. I just wish the food could be elevated and give me a burst of flavour and authenticity. Instead, it gave, im trying to do authenticity but haven't got it yet. Overall i feel like it was around 6/10. P.s the pork belly looked UNREAL. People next to me ordered it and honestly it didnt disappoint my eyes lol

First time eating at The Muddler. I love Thai/Asian food and would definitely rank this near the top. Food was excellent quality, the meat cooked to perfection. Portion sizes were great and the sauces had lovely flavour. A tad on the pricey side (£8 for 4 small duck spring rolls and £17.50 for main) so this would likely be a treat rather than a regular eat out place.

Food looked nicer than it tasted, beautifully presented though. Felt a little cramped in the restaurant as tables were quite close to each other. Dark decor, and lacked atmosphere, in my opinion. Service was super slow, waiting 15-20 minutes waiting for a drinks order to be taken, so decided to order our food at the same time. Waiting for 1 hour from entering the restaurant to being served food for 2 people seemed a bit long. By the time the food arrived, we had forgotten what we had ordered ! We had 3 small plates each to try, and noodles and rice. Disappointed and probably wouldn't recommend it to my friends and family.

Shocking service, when you ask for the “house red” and the staff say they don’t specify a house wine so they charge you the most expensive wine on the list. House wine specifies that you would like the cheapest wine available. To make matters worse, when we were provided with the bill, we asked the member of staff why we were charged the most expensive wine they made out that we chose that option and that we were in the wrong which is not how to treat a customer at all. We were talking about coming back as it was our first visit and the food was amazing and in general the service from other members of staff was excellent. But this particular interaction was really quite unpleasant and the Muddler will now sadly be losing out on repeat customers.

Very nice environment with friendly staff (although slow service) but the food was not good overall (Overpriced fake foreign food). The Thai green curry was far too sweet and came with congealed rice. The dish called ‘mapo tofu’ does not resemble Mapo tofu in anyway - even using the wrong type of tofu. The sushi was very nice and fresh but one piece had a large bone still in.

The small plate dishes were fantastic, however, the main dishes, not so good. My wife ordered Pad Thai and, as this is a classic dish, it should not really be messed with as you aren't really there for an alternative. Her Pad Thai tasted more like a pasta dish unfortunately, along with the noodles being rather mushy. Chef's should not mess with classic dishes in my opinion. Would I go back, yes! As said earlier, the small plate dishes were excellent and therefore would go to have multiple of these.

Lovely place. Loved the ambience and friendly staff. Food was very tasty and the main dish was a very large and filling portion. I have given 5 stars because it would be unfair to give them a four star because the experience was really nice asides from the fact that the main meal took very long to come and the sitting area is white small. However, the sides and drinks came way quicker which to be fair… it’s notorious with fancy restaurants with great food because a great meal does take time to prepare. So I am utterly satisfied and I left grinning from ear to ear. For a large group though, the space might be a tad bit small but if it’s an outing for two or a group of 4 then it’s not so bad.

I had heard some good things about the muddler (and some mixed reviews) but it had been somewhere I had wanted to try for a while. We were a booking of over 6 which meant they wanted pre orders and we could only order from the set menus (which were very limited). And from sitting down the food did take a while which I thought was a bit odd since we had already ordered everything. The edamame peas were quite nice but then the serving came out and the portions were very small for the price, the food was warm at best (as if it had been sitting for a while before being sent out) and the fried rice as a side came out quite late Vs the rest of the meal. The service itself was very good the waitress was great and attentive however, I feel like it was let down by the food as it didn’t match the price which was charged.

We booked a table for a friend's birthday. We arrived on time and had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. We understood that restaurant was busy but the attitude of the bar staff was appalling. They were disinterested and more concerned with table bookings and time slots rather than taking care of their customers in front of their eyes. After 10 minutes of trying to make eye contact and get one of the staffs attention, she looked at me and spoke to me like I was an inconvenience. When I eventually ordered drinks and paid for them it took a further 10 minutes and 2 further enquiries as to where the drinks were . I was then told responded to in a sharp prickly tone. When our table was ready, we got told we could sit. We didn't get shown over. We ordered drinks at the table and the lady who served us spilt a drink all down the back if that birthday girls dress. She was clearly very embarrassed and apologied profusely. However we weren't offered any gesture of good will or anything to demonstrate an apology. Unfortunately the girl with the headphone was stressed and struggling to cope and made no attempt at disguising her frustration and stress. The gentleman at the ba with dread locks was disinterested with poor customer service. There was a young lady with glasses who served and cleaned the tables and she was much better. I observed her reassuring that lady wearing the headphones several times and despite how busy they restaurant was ,she appeared to take it in her stride and get on with the task in hand. In all honesty that way we were treat put us off completely. The food was ok but I wouldn't return based on the chaos and attitude of the staff.

I had heard how lovely the food was at the Muddler…and absolutely well done to the chef..the sushi was outstanding and made fresh. However…….if you want to enjoy a cared for dining experience ….pop up the road for similar approach at McDonald’s. Apart from a lovely young girl serving ….the guy with the bun had an awful manor. Please send him on a customer service course asap! He promptly pushed the bill at us telling us he needed our table, the main meal was nearly an hour late so we had been previously reassured that this wouldn’t be a problem as it was their error. He then proceeded to not listen, and talk loudly over me without listening though I asked him at least 4 times to please let me finish my sentence of justification why we were ‘ over our allocated time’….he did then call over his manager who said they had ‘targets’ to meet!…I imagine he must be a new manager as no matter the pressure you don’t mention your targets to customers. The whole experience was shocking and upsetting for the group and as a ps I was not drinking so feel I can respond with an accurate write up… I am not after a free voucher or a revisit….but please have a team. meeting asap and sort your customer service out.

Honestly disappointing. We went for lunch, so around 3pm. I'm only going to comment on the food because that's where most of the disappointment lies. The sushi tasted like it had been made 2 days ago and left in the fridge. The meat was tough in the sushi, and on the mini plates. The pork belly should be melting in your mouth and it was tough, rubbery and inedible. Won't be coming back. Got better sushi at 11.30pm.

Was a bit disappointed the size of the tempura veg and Asian slaw quite expensive for what you got but we had a lovely time 🙂

Pan Asian tapas ( with some large plates). Excellent food, well cooked and served with a friendly manner. What more can you ask for? Great drinks and a decent albeit not large wine list. I’ll be back again soon!

We popped in on restaurant week again. We noted a smaller choice than last time, however this is completely understandable to attempt to keep within the price reductions for restaurant week. It was good to see the allergens menu being provided and the general menus updated so that it doesn’t incorrectly show allergen information. Service was good, food was tasty. Please put some veggie or fish bao options on the menu 😉

Had a lovely lunch with my parents and had a selection of small dishes, my only gripe was that I only got one bao bun, anywhere else I've been you get 2 but I'm probably just being greedy because of how delicious it was and I wanted more

We were looking for a place for lunch which did not serve the usual everyday fayre such as burgers and fish and chips. On wandering up Grey Street we came across The Muddler, a Pan Asian restaurant serving a variety of Asian dishes. On stepping through the door the welcome was warm and friendly and the restaurant was tastefully decorated and had a lovely ambience. Our order was taken quickly and we had to wait no more than fifteen minutes on the food being served. The dishes were well presented and served piping hot. The portion size was generous and the quality of the food was excellent. A very lucky find for us and a first class dining experience which we would have no hesitation in recommending to,potential diners.

We had a great meal here when visiting Newcastle for the weekend. Our server Emma was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. We were very well looked after. We had cocktails and small plates while visiting all were of a very high quality! I would definitely recommend visiting here if when I return to Newcastle

Well presented range of pan-asian cuisine. Starters were about average for me but the sushi was genuinely excellent. Unfortunately the restaurant is a bit cramped and service was quite slow when we were there. Cocktails were also very nice. Overall a little pricy for what you get.

We booked here as a group for a graduation cerebration. Initially, we tried booking as a whole group of 17 but it would appear there is a downside to this. Instead of the normal £5 deposit we were advised the deposit would be £10 per person. Also, large groups need to order in advance from a set menu. The set menu is limited and no one from the group wanted to order from it. We then divided the group into four separate bookings so we can access the normal menu. A few days before the booking we found out that the groups were on separate floors. I spoke to one of the supervisors Molly who was super helpful. In the end they were able to sit us all on the same floor. The front of the restaurant is currently under renovation so to access the restaurant, we had to use numerous stairs which was unfortunate for the elderly gentleman with us. It became a nightmare accessing the toilet too as this required another track around the stairs. I have had some food here before and it is usually nice. However, on this day, the service was unbelievably slow! It took about an hour to even get the starters! By the time the main meal arrived, it was nearly two hours later! We ordered a variety of dishes including pork belly which is my favourite, as usual this did not disappoint. At the end of the meal, Molly served a little fancy pudding for our graduate which was really nice. I would definitely come back here again in future but the slow service was a turnoff.

Nice food, very slow service. Don’t mind waiting for food but had to wait for drinks for 30 min and the table was literally in 2 steps from the bar! The answer was that they were short in staff. How many staff you need to put a bottle of water on the table in such a hot day?

Visiting friends and they organised lunch at Fuego’s. Had the tortilla and it was delicious. Spent hours after in the shop spending far too much money (but managed to get a fair bit of Christmas shopping done). Loads of choice and the staff were really helpful and friendly

Absolutely terrible service had to ask for cutlery after waiting 40 minutes for food which was bland soggy and Luke warm staff just didn't seem as if they knew what they had to do the restaurant is actually in a bouncing bar with music blasting I couldn't here the waitress or even have a conversation with my wife it was that loud I have never experienced anything like it in my life I would definitely not go back and would definitely not recommend to my worst enemy it was that bad there is much better places to eat but if you like sitting in a night club and dining go for it!

Delicious yakisoba and beef curry as our mains. Excellent tempura and spring rolls for sides. Loved that rice came with the curry at no extra cost. Friendly, efficient staff. Good range of drinks. Central location and nice ambience.
