Found the young girl serving us not very happy at all. Looked like she didn’t want to be there. And as the evening went on she got more miserable if that was possible. Hospitality maybe not for her. Apart from that thought it was a nice pub but that does put you off going back. Also no cash isn’t a plus when phone died and bank card didn’t want to work a couple of times.

Normally we visit Winchester on weekends and always find the Mucky Duck very busy and hard to find a seat. Very impersonable so often bypass. This time was on a Monday evening with few patrons. Much different, very welcoming staff, attractive and comfortable decor, a very enjoyable visit.

After 30 minutes of sheer hell playing five-a-side football down at River Park, you're going to get thirsty. This is the Mucky Duck. Its wide selection of beer gets to your thirst… fast. And a bag of crisps, nuts or pork scratchings ensures it's in balance with your body fluids. But seriously, this is a great pub and the perfect place to watch sport and have a drink, if that's your thing. Staff are very friendly, especially Kieran who always goes the extra mile with a smile. They don't sell Lucozade though.

This was the first stop on my very different birthday pub crawl with Covid still knocking around. I emailed the pub to start with to see how we went booking a table or if we even needed to as we were only having drinks. They got back to me very swiftly and it was booked through email. Upon arrival it was clear they had lots of different safety protocols which was reassuring. We had a small table outside which we were allowed to move from as it started to rain! The service was quick, the booze was splendid and the staff were friendly! I would recommend this to others it is a lovely establishment.

An otherwise good experience was marred by disappointment with the food. The staff were friendly and the beer quite acceptable However, the beef on ciabatta with chips was dull and tasteless even with seasoning and tomato ketchup added. I left at least 3/4 uneaten and said as much when asked Not sure I’ll be back. The beer is better at the Hyde Tavern and the food much much better at either the Westgate or the Old Vine. But as I said, friendly staff - but perhaps they need a chef / cook to match

Never in my life have I been treated so appallingly. Me and my partner were watching the football. The pub was quite busy but when the game ended people trickled out. We were in there approximately 2 hours. We were looking at the food menu wondering what to order and because I was taking to long to decided my partner took a packet of sweets out of his pocket to eat whilst he waited for me to choose. Well the rudest member of female staff who was collecting glasses came storming over and said it was extremely disrespectful that he eats his own food in a restaurant at the top of her lungs so everyone looked around. I was absolutely mortified. I am a manager of a restaurant myself and if any of my staff ever spoke to a customer like that (whether they were eating there own food or not) I would have sacked them on the spot. What she should have done is come over quietly and spoke politely but it was a packet of maltesers and we was ordering food anyway. After that we both left our drinks and went without ordering food and we will never return. If I was kosher and had a sandwich out would she have shouted at me then? Or if I had a small child who needed a bottle would I have been shouted at for using my own formula? Appalling disgusting behavior

My pal and I dropped in here for a beer and snack, his wife was cooking dinner that evening, so no over indulging for us. This is a really lovely looking bar, deep leather seats, historical pictures of the city and elsewhere and of course the obligatory flat screen televisions for watching the sports. My problem is that it is soooooo dark inside. There are places within the venue that Lord Lucan himself could be sitting, but never to be found because of the cloak of darkness that is prevalent.I found the staff very friendly, very welcoming and very efficient. Food was of a good quality (my pal is a professional chef) and was presented well and speedily. Drinks are priced above average, but are from a well run cellar and therefore excellent tasting. One quite oddball item, is the gent's toilets...which are cocooned in corrugated metal panels? Not quite sure what the designers were thinking? A small, cosy garden with tables and chairs, potted plants and shrubs, completes this busy little bar.Recommended for couples, friends and solos...not sure about families?

The "Mucky" is a great pub for sporting events, beers, and burgers. It's not a posh gastro pub by any means but it's much better than your usual lads, lads, lads, sports bar. There's a lot of screens, usually, with a few differing events on at the same time, the food is unpretentious and hearty, the beer selection is varied and of a high standard, and there's even an extensive back bar. There's really only one issue and I must say I would visit far more often if it wasn't for one this drawback. One of the management team, who I'm informed "has been there for ages" is incredibly surly and she seems to only love "her regulars" and couldn't give two hoots if you're a new face. You seem to be treated with contempt and antipathy if you're a new guest, to a point where I and my group of friends hearts sink when we see her behind the bar. I may be labouring this point but I feel it's worth mention as this one individual really seems to change the atmosphere for us and is the sole reason we don't go to the "mucky" as much as we would. As the saying goes "it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch"

The staff twice apologised and offered us tea lights to brighten the place. None appeared. The whole venue seemed dark. There was more space behind the bar then in some places in the main bar area making it very narrow for people to walk pass each other knocking drinkers. We had a meal which was served on cold plates - COLD PLATES! - meal okay nothing special. Work colleagues and I visited midweek for lunch. Long wait to be served at bar for drinks (very expensive drinks!). We then ordered food, three burgers & chips. Nothing too difficult but an hour later we were still waiting. The pub was about half full so not too busy. We finally asked about our order and were told 'yours are next'. Funny that! When the food finally came it was not worth the wait. Sloppily assembled burgers and over cooked hard chips. Most were so dark as to be inedible. No one came to check on us. On leaving, we tried to speak with someone at the bar but no one was available and we were late getting back to work due to the delay with food. Not likely to return.

The burgers were a little burnt and the scampi thrown on the plate. The cost is very reasonable with 3 drinks and 3 lunches coming it at under £40.The only big downside is the place smells like the owners perhaps own a couple of big dogs that roam the pub, which if you are sitting down to eat, the smell can be a bit off putting.

We initially passed the ‘Mucky Duck’ public house whilst following one of the ‘City Walks’ available from the tourist information centre (Alfred’s Final Journey) en route to the site of Hyde Abbey during a short stay in Winchester. We were attracted to it because it looked to be a traditional and honest looking pub close to where our hotel was and the rather amusing sign outside describing the pub as a ‘Sporting Bar for discerning ladies and their good gentlemen’’ obviously the owners have a well-developed sense of humour. We visited here one evening specifically for a ‘pub’ meal having 'dined out' for a couple of evenings and was not disappointed. The interior of the bar is a bit dark at first with its wooden floors and dark painted walls and ceilings but is furnished with leather seats and settees set around tables which makes it all look quite smart. The interior is surprisingly spacious and in the centre acting as a focal point is a long wooden panelled bar serving both sides of the pub. There is a garden area outside which seemed popular though we did not try this, there are several large flat screen televisions which on the night of our visit were showing a mid-week football match. The pub seemed to have a vibrant clientele and one amusing incident we witnessed was someone buying a round at the bar and then passing the drinks though an open window to his party in the garden! The pub had a good selection of beers and I tried the house special ‘Mucky Bitter’ which was not a bad pint. The food menu basically consists of traditional; pub food (i.e fish & chips, burgers and sausages in a bun), though there are some other choices as well. The food came in good time after ordering and was very good in terms of taste and value for money in our opinion. All in all, a good pub with a homely feel and a friendly vibe, a shame it is not closer to where we live we would visit again . We would certainly consider a revisit if we were in Winchester again and would recommend a visit to others.

This used to be one of my favourite bars in Winchester but I can't believe how it has slipped downhill. I was greeted today by a short aggressive tubby girl who rolled her eyeballs at me whilst I was trying to order my drinks. I was trying to order a premium gin and she wouldn't do it in the glass I wanted then continued to shovel a load of slushy watery ice into my glass. I asked her for fresh ice and she said no. Well if you are going to charge the best part of a tenner for a drink then get it right. I understand the owners have an interest in a restaurant in Winchester & I do hope this standard of customer service is not reflected in their other establishment.

We availed of the Sunday Roast Beef on offer which was served with tons of veg and potatoes inside a giant yorkshire pudding. Friendly staff adds to the impression that it would be a great destination for a few pints on a Friday/Saturday evening as well as watching the football on a Sunday afternoon. tOP PUB.

One of the best pubs in which we have been served a GREAT pint and the staff pleasant, just a pity the music was so loud and lights to dim but enjoyed our visit on a Monday night.

A sports pub on the outskirts of Winchester city centre. Good selection of real ales at reasonable prices. Bar staff our friendly and at the time we visited (mid afternoon) there was a nice atmosphere - we were in the run up to Christmas so this may have influenced the atmosphere. We visited for pre-Christmas meal drinks.

I had been on a search for local beer when I came upon the mucky duck. I wish it had been summer as the outdoor space looks fantastic. The beer did not disappoint and I was able to order 1/2 pints to experience more if the local items! Inside is cute and the staff was lovely.

Don't be put off by the sports pub if your looking for place for food ...Even through the day or when no matches are on , the mucky could pass as high end gastro pub. The food is lovely and at a fair ( WINCHESTER) price and the selection of drinks are very good. But when the game is on their not place in winchester you rather be!!!The place is buzzing, lots of atmosphere, the food comes out at a good pace and drink served in to time. But it still re-mains a good pub when busy and it's not rowdy either!!!Only issue is you have to get there early or you won't get a seat !!

What's not to like ?!! Great sports Bar food, nice selection of well cared for beers, great happy staff, Four huge screens and they often show several different sports at once, new outside TV and bar. And if you ask nicely they'll record your oddball sport for you! All round great atmosphere, uncluttered decor, comfy seats, and a lot of fun especially on game days. Love this place.

Great beer, Great food and great atmosphere. I met friends here to watch the England v Wales Rugby game, needless to say the pub was awesome and especially made the evening special when Wales beat England......although I was one of 3 Welsh supporters in a pub full of England fans....A great night all round.

We went for lunch one Saturday. The staff are really nice, the food is fine - we had standard pub fare of fish and chips, which was pretty good. Nicely presented, good taste, very good crispy chips. We sat outside in garden at the back - partly because it was a nice day but also because it has TV screens showing sport - three big screens - and they're very dominant inside the pub. It's pretty hard to find a corner where you aren't sitting in someone's way if they want to watch the football. But to be fair, it is known for it's sports screens so perhaps we should have gone somewhere else. On the big plus side, the staff were extremely friendly.

I visited this place with 3 co-workers. After about 25 minutes in search of a "true"pub. By "true," I mean a pub that you can tell your friends about and it meets the mental picture of an old English pub. This place was a very nice pub. We did not order food. But service and environment were n nice. Drafts were cold and what more can you ask for!!! Around 6-7pm the evening crowd comes in. This is when the place seems to become it center of attention! I highly recommend that visitors stop by this pub and have a few pints. It was a neat old English pub experience.

Had a great evening with friends. A very good menu and the food was excellent. There was a live band (Queen bee and the trappers)which everybody enjoyed and some danced to. A really good pub.

We booked Sunday lunch with my sister and brother in law, we wanted to try the Chestnut Horse with the intention to book for Christmas. The starters were lovely but not to be said for the main course, my sister and I had the roast beef, the beef was cut thickly and the whole plate full was verging on cold, my sister order extra cauliflower cheese which arrived towards the end of her meal. We ordered puddings, my sisters came first, ice cream, and ours arrived half an hour later and was not fully as we ordered. The staff were very pleasant and apologetic. Such a shame for a lovely country pub.

Absolutely horrific experience. 2hrs from order to delivery. And completely the wrong order. And the coffee was cold. Never again

Staff of young girls running this tesco Costa into the ground. It's filthy. Not to mention arguing with visibly autistic adult over whether I needed a straw after I had politely said I needed one for my 'sippy cup' (what?!) then shouting a very sarcastic thank you at me after being so rude and talking to me like an idiot. Rude young staff obviously their first employment. But the response off this kid?! Try doing that on the street I mean come on. You won't get along in the real world, kid. You need to hire some adults.
