The Mowbray Arms in Hambleton

Called in for something to eat with a friend, sounded very nice but when it came it was microwaved ...........not impressed at all

Food ok, staff member friendly. Shame about loud music, and the lairy lot in the window on the bar side.

Beautiful building.... unfortunately let down by the atmosphere. We arrived just before lunch and people were doing shots, music was some 90s dance, not really inkeeping with the historic architecture of the pub. We had intended to eat but there were people swearing (f**k, c**t etc.) in the bar, I'm not a prude but I don't want to listen to it whilst I am eating lunch. The menu we were given was covered in beer, decided to give eating a miss for the above reasons. Tim Taylors on cask which was decent.

Meet up with old service friends, ambiance was wonderful, staff very attentive & extremely friendly. Service was 1st class as was the food, I definitely recommend visiting this establishment if your in Thirsk.

I spent a great evening with my daughter and her partner, meet several of the regulars, listening to the music on the jukebox, everyone was so friendly, cracking atmosphere, will certainly go there again when I next visit Thirsk.

On way home stopped for lunch with our 2 dogs, very friendly welcome. Good quality pub food - we had ham snwich which was packed with goodies and scampi was excellent - highly recommend

Visited as a family of 9 on 5th November and we found the Mowbray arms to be very accommodating. The Sunday lunch was really nice. 3 courses for £11.95. We were not disappointed. Compliments to all the staff.

Love what the new owners have done to improve this market place pub. Rarely used it before but do now through the day. Younger crowd on a night. Drinks very fairly priced and good John Smith's . Pleasant partly sunny rear yard and olde world interior. Good food and great value Sunday lunch. Well worth trying to support Stuart in his venture at The Mobray Arms.

Lovely authentic pub with great ale! A great atmosphere in the evening with a DJ playing! I would recommend a visit.

Wonderful homemade steak pie like my grandmother used to make it. Proper chunky chips. Fantastic sticky toffee pudding. Fast and friendly service. (PS, re picture, I asked for no peas).

This is my first time in Thirsk. And so the first time In the Mowbray Arms with my one time experience. I would have to disagree with the 2 previous 1 star reviews my steak pie was one of the best I'v had in any pub and my wife was very happy with her meal. So I have to agree with the management. Portion Size Was good enough for me I thought it was value for money. It was definitely a friendly Traditional pub with good beer. Also dog friendly. I just wish it was closer To my home town in Staffordshire.

What a great pub, best pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord I've had anywhere! Visited 6th September around 11.30, lovely lady behind the bar made us very welcome. Hope she managed to top up her tan 🤣

The pub is really good but the clientele sat around the bar area were ignorant and foul mouthed We left our drinks and so did several other customers Won’t return 😩

RAW FOOD! Me and my family walked into this pub because it looked traditional and thenmenu was to a great standard. Service was good and staff where friendly. I ordered the chicken strips and my wife ordered the beef burger. My chicken strips where raw! Cooked on the outside and raw in the inside. My wife's burger was like a 10p burger from the corner shop frozen section. It was disgusting! The staff was kind enough though and gave us free desserts. However, the chocolate fudge cake I had was dry and I pressured it had been left out for a long time. DON'T WAIST YOUR TIME HERE!

We visited the Mowbray Arms today for a drink as we had heard it was a nice pub.OMG what can I say a couple were fighting and arguing and abusive to each other using filthy language and I quote (the local drug dealer ) We are tourist to this area and myself and my husband aswell as another couple who were in felt intimated and uncomfortable we left .The man in question kept coming back and forward to the pub aswell as intacting with various vehicles outside .Not what we expected as the Mowbray Arms is a lovely oldie worldie pub and the bar maid was lovely .

Fab Sunday lunch, definitely recommend.

Visited here today for lunch with my family… wish we hadn’t! Felt bad as the bar lady was in her own and doing EVERYTHING from serving, taking food orders, seating people etc. was super disappointed when our food arrived. Although my 2 young children enjoyed their chicken nuggets, chips and beans, my husband’s steak pie and my prawn sandwich were very disappointing and not good value for money. His portion was VERY small and my side salad and coleslaw was literally 1 mouthful of each (including the core of the lettuce!) when we asked for ketchup we were given 1 tiny pot between 4 of us. For the price we paid we were extremely disappointed and won’t be returning. The photo of my sad looking meal includes chips shared by my daughters (which were the nicest part of the meal) .

Been to Thirsk so many times, missed this gem. Fantastic Sunday lunch, I had chicken Breast and my husband had meat pie. Plates were hot, plenty of fresh and very hot veg and just one all round great meall to see us through the rest of the day. The staff were very polite and friendly. Will definitely be back.

Lovely olde worded Inn. Called in for lunch, I had the quiche and hubby had homemade steak pie. The quiche came with a delicious jacket potato and a well prepared salad, very nice homemade quiche. Hubby's steak pie came with chips, peas and gravy, lovely big chunks of tender steak, thoroughly enjoyed both meals. Dogs welcome and very friendly, attentive staff. Highly recommended.

We stopped on our return from Northumberland. Lovely friendly little pub. Made our dog very welcome, bring him water and a treat.

Great Sunday lunch, beef was so tender and plenty of it, veg was good all hot and served fast. Staff were friendly and polite would defiantly recommend it when I'm Thirsk. Keep up the good work.

Lovely dog friendly pub. Visited twice while in the area, highly recommend . A female bar staff member on my second visit left a lot to be desired in customer service skills but she was busy. Don’t let that put you off, good drinks great atmosphere .

Ate lunch here today. My 83 year old dad thought the cheeseburger was ok, I thought the lasagne was acceptable but my wife’s “chicken fillet burger” was, to be honest, a disgrace! It was basically a “BirdsEye” crunchy chicken burger but not even sure it was a “BirdsEye” one. Bland and flavourless. Also, no jacket potatoes available, but not notified of that when we arrived and took a menu and another customer walked out because there was no gluten free items on the menu. We are more than happy with “no frills” pub food but please don’t insult us with bland tasteless frozen burgers that are about as far removed from a chicken fillet burger as you can possibly get.

We went for a pub crawl in Thirsk and visited here. Its a bit rough and ready but the staff and locals couldn't be more friendly. We were made very welcome. You can watch sport in the front area where there is plenty of seating and at the back there is a bit of a dance area.

A delightful, cosy pub/restaurant in the centre of Thirsk. Service was prompt and the food arrived on lovely hot plates. We chose the scampi which came with a large serving of freshly cooked chips,peas and tartar sauce. A very good meal at a reasonable price and certainly worth a return visit.

When it comes to the sheer style and decor of the pubs in Thirsk there is no doubt that the Mowbray Arms is certainly one of the best. It is apparently the oldest pub in the square and with its low ceilings, huge dark wooden...

Spent a very pleasant early evening with a good pint of Landlord in a warm and welcoming snug

The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is good. We visited on a Wednesday afternoon so that might have some bearing on our experience. We didn’t have food so can’t comment but I did have a pint of Tetleys which was frankly horrible , I only drank it because I hoped the taste would improve but alas no. I then tried a pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord which is always good , but not today sadly it was almost as bad as the tetleys. Also my wife had a lemonade and lime but the chap behind the bar forgot the lime.

My friend and I had the most wonderful lunch here today. The staff were so friendly and helpful; the food was beautiful. The pub is historical and interesting. We'll definitely visit again.

Food and beer for me and the Mrs on the way to Whitby. The steak pie was crammed with lean tender meat with a sumptuous light and delicious crust. Quite one of the best I have ever tasted. Unfortunately the chips were far too deeply fried although I managed to avoid a trip to a dental technician. Beer excellently presented and willingly topped up, Timothy Taylor's landlord ' it's usually a bit lively '. Would have been an easy 5 stars but for the reincarnated chips.

Visited here not the for the first time and great every time we come to the Mowbray. Would definitely recommend, friendly staff and welcoming pub. Food is great - can’t beat homemade food! 100% will be back again

Lovely olde worlde traditional pub in my home town. Dog friendly and reasonably priced. Take the dog a walk on a Sunday and we always call for a pint.

Part of an afternoon wandering around the pins of Thirsk. If lived here over a year and only been to one pub. My approach to pub visits like this is to perch at the bar and take it all in. Wasn't disappointed here. Friendly group of regulars and bar staff

Very busy on race day, good beer, fast service

We visited on an afternoon for food and drinks. Looked clean, nice furnishings and staff were friendly. I ordered chicken strips and my husband ordered a burger. Whilst there was nothing wrong with the food it was a bit underwhelming and basic. Prices were reasonable so I guess you get what you pay for!

If ur visiting Thirsk don't go in Mowbray arms, bar maid makes sure she serves locals first (29th July 2022) despite the fact that we were obviously next with o t 3 other people in the bar.

Had a lunch main courses were fine for price

Turned back due to patrons smoking in the doorway due to the rain outside... really not plesent at all. Please have a word, we have been told that it is a nice place to eat and drink.

As far as old English pubs go, this is a very old, traditional pub. The food, beer and atmosphere were great. I am a tourist and it was what I was looking for in a pub.

Had two lunches. Lasagne was very small in oval shaped dish about an inch deep. Not a decent portion at all. Salad was a small lettuce leaf and two tomato slices and some onion. Not great. Gave me very bad stomach cramps n hour later....

Spent a great afternoon in the pub. The pub is full of character and retains it's old rustic charm. Big beer garden to the rear which gets the sun for most of the day. Bar serves my favourite Timothy Taylors Landlord, also a good selection...

Sadly can't rate this any higher. Firstly pub really chilly. The roast pork was so fatty so left it and not very hot. Staff nice. Reason I didn't complain another table had and heard another couple not happy. Maybe just an off day.

Lovely home cooked food we had a sunday dinner ,was lovely, called in during the week because we heard so much about the steak pie and chips well i was so shocked because it was beautiful the amount of meat in that pie :) chips...

Ate here today and it was superb. Hubby and I both had steak pie and chips. We can quite honestly say it was the best ever. The lovely Layla was a delightful barmaid who made us very welcome. Great food, good atmosphere, lovely service and outstanding value for money. Can't rate it highly enough. Thank you for a wonderful lunch ☺️

Stopped here for a lunch while visiting Thirsk the food is proper old fashioned pub menu (not a bad thing). The food was really tasty and good portions definitely value for money

Love this little pub. It does the best steak pie ever. We live in Scarborough and everytime we go anywhere near Thirsk we always go there. My husband had double pie today and loved it.

Great place its just no parking

The oldest pub in Thrisk, with some original settings. Nice sitting areas at front of pub which is an advantage to wetherspoons. Service good and now serving Cocktails on tap. Well worth a visit. Pictures near pub.

Started disappointed, gents toilet has a broken tap and no toilet roll holder (need to be a contortionist to reach it) but then.... a wee Scottish lady showed us something I've not seen since I moved to Thirsk 3 months ago... Customer Service! The lady welcomed us, went through the specials, then acknowledged the guest behind me, apologising for the wait.. i was blown away, I almost gave up on Yorkshire.... stunning!! When we were fed, she checked back with us!!! Amazing... as we left, she wished us farewell... its the little things that Make the difference, the women's a diamond!! I have not seen anything close so far.. welldone and we will be back!!
