Lunch call in Thirsk is a frequent stop for us on our way home from Newcastle. This time instead of a quick sandwich we saw the sign for Sunday lunch outside and couldn’t resist. The landlord assigned a table to us we bought a drink and ordered a Sunday roast each. We had our meal served amazingly quick, the pub was quite busy. The plates were very hot, the meat was fantastic and lots of it, fresh veg Yorkshire pudding and lots of gravy. A perfect lunch great service lovely staff and all for a great deal less than £25 . Will definitely call again.

Best stake pie and chips ever. Great chunks of meat and tasty gravy. The chips were "proper" not mushy, or bland. The pub is really old. Stone flag floors. Proper old beams etc. The staff were friendly and welcoming. If you're in Thirsk go there you won't be disappointed. Thanks guys.

went to this pub today 20th august with mam and sister we ordered jacket potato 2tuna 1 cheese and 3 teas we waited 15mins even though it was not busy my sisters and mams was cold so she said she would heat them up you don't heat tuna and we didn't want cheese melting they took them away and they were hot when brought back we still hadn't received our tea my sister had 2 mouth fulls from hers and found a hair in it she shouted of the waitress and after telling her she walked away to get the manager saying she is complaining again where everyone could here . we asked for the money back they gave us £6.50 even though it was £7.95 . My sister went to the bar and both waitress were standing talking about us as she heard them say we better check prices as the other one came for a menu . They were unaware that she was standing there and she heard them . They gave her the rest of the money. There excuse was that they were busy and short staffed . We were there for a day out and we certainly wont be going back. The service and attitude from staff was not up to standard .

Called in mid-evening and was surprised to see the place empty. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and the lagers were okay. Went in for Sunday afternoon drinks, 4/5 people in all sitting at bar with their drinks, stood waiting a tall blond woman came out of back and put a glass away, directly in front of me, didn't look like she saw me, but she then did the same thing another 4-5 times, its a small bar about 12 feet long, at one point she came in went to other end of bar said something to a customer then walked past me and into the back, no word of acknowledgement no "I'll be with you in a minute" I've worked in bars and you're always aware of who's around and who's waiting. I wasn't scruffy, I wasn't loud or rude, I was just standing waiting for her to "see" me! I could maybe guess why she was ignoring me but can't say without evidence, so I left and found another pub of which there are many in Thirsk!!

We called in here for lunch on 30 March 2024 having intending to go to Helmsley, however I have to say the food was fabulous which made up for our disappointment of not being able to park in Helmsley. We were really impressed with the chips, they were proper and not the anemic chips you are sometimes served elsewhere. The pie itself was very tasty with just the right amount of pastry and the gravy was so tasty. I will definitely will be returning sometime in the future thank you Mowbray Arms.

Beautiful building.... unfortunately let down by the atmosphere. We arrived just before lunch and people were doing shots, music was some 90s dance, not really inkeeping with the historic architecture of the pub. We had intended to eat but there were people swearing (f**k, c**t etc.) in the bar, I'm not a prude but I don't want to listen to it whilst I am eating lunch. The menu we were given was covered in beer, decided to give eating a miss for the above reasons. Tim Taylors on cask which was decent.

RAW FOOD! Me and my family walked into this pub because it looked traditional and thenmenu was to a great standard. Service was good and staff where friendly. I ordered the chicken strips and my wife ordered the beef burger. My chicken strips where raw! Cooked on the outside and raw in the inside. My wife's burger was like a 10p burger from the corner shop frozen section. It was disgusting! The staff was kind enough though and gave us free desserts. However, the chocolate fudge cake I had was dry and I pressured it had been left out for a long time. DON'T WAIST YOUR TIME HERE!

Visited here today for lunch with my family… wish we hadn’t! Felt bad as the bar lady was in her own and doing EVERYTHING from serving, taking food orders, seating people etc. was super disappointed when our food arrived. Although my 2 young children enjoyed their chicken nuggets, chips and beans, my husband’s steak pie and my prawn sandwich were very disappointing and not good value for money. His portion was VERY small and my side salad and coleslaw was literally 1 mouthful of each (including the core of the lettuce!) when we asked for ketchup we were given 1 tiny pot between 4 of us. For the price we paid we were extremely disappointed and won’t be returning. The photo of my sad looking meal includes chips shared by my daughters (which were the nicest part of the meal) .

Ate lunch here today. My 83 year old dad thought the cheeseburger was ok, I thought the lasagne was acceptable but my wife’s “chicken fillet burger” was, to be honest, a disgrace! It was basically a “BirdsEye” crunchy chicken burger but not even sure it was a “BirdsEye” one. Bland and flavourless. Also, no jacket potatoes available, but not notified of that when we arrived and took a menu and another customer walked out because there was no gluten free items on the menu. We are more than happy with “no frills” pub food but please don’t insult us with bland tasteless frozen burgers that are about as far removed from a chicken fillet burger as you can possibly get.

Food and beer for me and the Mrs on the way to Whitby. The steak pie was crammed with lean tender meat with a sumptuous light and delicious crust. Quite one of the best I have ever tasted.
