Brilliant little place! Waitresses were lovely and friendly, they moved us to the window when we asked! Food came really quickly aswell.

We came upon this place when looking for an early dinner as my son had booked onto a ghost tour. Great selection of light plates but I went for the soft haloumi tacos with pomegranate seeds, which was delicious, my son went for breaded mussels and he enjoyed that. It was fairly busy even at 6pm on a Monday, best to book in advance, I will make a point of going back there if in the area again.

Cocktails amazing, food average.

Service was lovely but unfortunately the food was pretty inedible. Ordered Mac cheese, a burrito and Nachos. Nachos and Mac cheese were barely warm, let alone hot, so we had to send them back. The staff were great about it and apologetic offering us a drink (which we didn’t take as we weren’t there to take advantage). When the two dishes came back, they were piping hot this time but so tasteless and pretty horrid. The Mac cheese was anaemic and nothing like the pictures I had seen. The nachos were a bit tasteless with what appeared to be the Mac cheese sauce at the bottom instead of proper cheese. They were swimming in soupy water. The burrito was ‘ok’. It was hot when it came out and as we were so hungry we ate a lot of it. Pretty tasteless though. Chips were nice and drinks were good. Not sure if it was a different person in the kitchen but we definitely won’t be back for food again.

Lovely bar with a great view. Unfortunately not what it once was. Lacking in atmosphere and has lost the previous elevated food and 'wine bar' type feel it previously held. It's now a little drab. However it has a great range of cocktails and the food looked lovely.

Absolutely will return, we had burritos 🌯, and it was fantastic. Good service, came out quickly, and the portion size was good also. Nice atmosphere, plenty of drink options, perfectly located. Thank you, we will be back early October.

Came here on both nights for drinks and food. Nachos for starter was delicious. Main meal of burritos was good. Cocktails were fantastic! Thanks for the good service, also letting bring the dog in till late. Highly recommend here for food and great cocktails!

Popped in for a bite to eat after Whitby had a really busy "pirate" weekend. Service was amazing with super cocktails at very reasonable prices. Good choice of food with lots of choice other than fish n chips and served quickly. Would I visit again definitely - yes.

The rudest staff I've encountered in a long time. Completely spoiled our evening. We had been looking forward to visiting since having a great time here last year, but was a very different experience. Will go somewhere else next time.

The Moon & Sixpence has a great location overlooking Whitby Harbour. They seem to do a good trade in cocktails. We visited for a meal but we were rather underwhelmed with the food. Also I found the cocktail disappointing. The servers were very pleasant but we did not stay long as we did not feel it had a particularly warm atmosphere. Maybe this was due to the fact that the restaurant door was left wide open, and it had turned a bit cooler in the evening.

Dirty tables full of glasses and mess after the previous guests do not seem to bother the staff. Our order brought to the table, some glasses taken but table left really dirty. The waitress spilt part of my drink on me and the table. Brought napkins for me to tide up! After she left we asked to have our table cleaned, her colleague came and… spilt a bit of my drink on the table.. no, the new drink (mine partly spilt by a staff) was not offered. Also - very unpleasant entrance with plenty of rubbish, hair and papers. It should have been a warming.

I have visited earlier today and have to say I was disappointed. I had visited before and had a great time. However this time the bar staff appeared unhappy with me asking questions about the cocktails. I felt a bind to the staff. I asked one to wipe table as it had drink all over and was very sticky this was met with rolled eyes. The drinks are £10 a drink I think it should be well kept. Finally asked for cheese and chips which were £6.50 and basically covered on cheese sauce. My kids did not want these considering most kids don’t love cheese sauce. Wasn’t what was advertised. Overall disappointed used to really enjoy this place .:(

I have been coming to Whitby for many years now, the bar has slowly taken a rapid decline. The service at the bar is below par considering it’s £10 per drink you would at least hope for a smile. The menu is very overpriced the drinks yes are lovely but with out service and atmosphere your better off somewhere else. Plus cheesy chips at 6.50 and it’s cheese sauce GROSS

This has always been my absolute favourite place for cocktails and I tell anyone and everyone they need to try them. The cocktail 'specials' have been nothing short of genius in taste and presentation. However last week we came in a couple of times whilst visiting Whitby and whilst the cocktails were ok they were mediocre and definitely nothing close to as special as they've been every time I've visited previously. To top it off the service was abysmal. Not even a smile. Drinks were slammed down on the table in front of us without a word, with no acknowledgement as to what drink was what or even a 'here you go'. I'd say it was an off night but we visited twice last week and got the same. Absolutely zero effort from the staff. I hate to say it as I'm usually so loyal but my experience has driven me to Macy browns instead with much better drinks and service. I shall be sad to have to cross the moon and sixpence off my list of the things I look forward to most in Whitby.

We managed to book a table for our group of 8 and really enjoyed it. There are plenty of seats in the front with a direct view of the sea and harbour and also a lovely big dining area upstairs. The restaurant is located perfectly on the busy promenade where it's very central but not too loud. The service was great and the food well made and tasty. Everybody had a good time!

Amazing cocktails and loads of choice for those not drinking too. Lovely staff and a nice atmosphere- right on the water! Open late ;)

Beautifully presented cocktails

The moon and sixpence was our go to cocktail/mocktail spot after dinner every night, as I don't drink alcohol it was great to find somewhere that put as much effort into the mocktails as they did the cocktails and it really showed in the taste. The staff were really friendly and it's location is fantastic right on the water. We also stopped here for lunch one day and had the chunky slow cooked beef chilli loaded fries and the cheese and bacon loaded fries which were both great. Next time I visit Whitby I'd like to eat here again for more than a light lunch as the other food looked brilliant

Would have been lovely but one of the staff members had a chip on her shoulder and was extremely rude. Asked if she would mind helping bring the drinks outside as had little ones and she scoffed and said no she won’t help. Funny though because we then saw other staff members taking drinks out to other people. She then stared giving dirty looks the entire time we were there. Don’t get what her attitude was about but I felt that put out by her I had to review to let others know. If you need to know who it was, young lady wearing zebra print trousers

Impossible to get a glass without lipstick on first visit even after taking it back twice. Second, bought a drink to then be told I couldn't drink it inside!

I attended the restaurant for a meal with my two year old, in all innocence ordered her a cheese burger and chips. Only to discover once she started eating it, the bread had sesame seed on it (being brioche I did not expect this) My daughter had never had sesame before therefore, this could have given her a very serious reaction. Allergens were not stated clearly on the menu, and should be particularly if advertising the food is suitable for children. I appreciate the menu had a statement stating customers should make staff aware, in my case this was not possible. The managers response to me was such that her staff members had nut and seed allergies so she wasn’t sure why they were even on site. This to me is no justification, when my daughter could have had a life threatening reaction to sesame seeds.

Not the place it used to be. Been calling in here for a number of years and have always really enjoyed it. I have noticed over the last year or so it is no longer as friendly and a nice environment as it used to be. Visited the other day where upon entering and standing at the bar, we were neither acknowledged nor greeted. When we were, it was with a sullen “are you wanting a drink” parts of order were missed but wasn’t charged so just let it go. 2nd order payment was taken for but full order not received and when asking it was all like it was too much bother for them. Put me off going in again to be honest as it was always one of my go to places. Disappointing

Went for evening meal the other week. Cocktails .. a tenner?? .. I'm sure they're worth it, but I had beer. Food, had fish & chips .. which honestly are ok, had better at The Fisherman's Wife and Trenchers.

Disappointing breakfast with seriously overcooked eggs!

Sort your toliets out, totally disgusting. Service, plenty of staff yet tables full of glasses and not wiped down so sticky.

Lovely place. Popped in late one night for cocktails. They were excellent. Even allowed an off menu request for a Tom Collins which was lovely. Really lovely staff too. Definitely recommend.

A day trip to Whitby, starting with an iced latte at The Moon & Sixpence before wandering round the independent shops and then up the steps to St. Mary's Church at Whitby.

Good food and friendly service! My mom and I shared nachos and the macaroni minis with bacon sauce. Raspberry daiquiris. Ice cream and cookie dough desserts. Yum!

Would Not recommend if you're vegan. Very little choice for vegetarian. Lovely waitress, conscientious chef, not his fault that everything is fried... in sunflower oil (which I'm intolerant to), though apparently if we had called days in advance they might have been able to rustle something up. Mock cocktail was nice but nothing to write home about. Steps to dining and and loo. No good for wheelchair users. Probably not going to visit again.

Nice little restaurant. Service not great but ok. Sat in the back so the view wasn’t great. Food came out a little cold and I think overpriced for what you get. If they sat us in the front it would have been nicer to eat your food. Overall wouldn’t go back again but might have a drink

Ordered avocado and poached eggs on brioche. When it arrived it was solid poached eggs and avocado on an old burger bun with sesame seeds. Apart from the avocado which wasn’t even mashed funny it was inedible

Cold service, and rude. So sorry to have to write this review after such a welcoming and enjoyable experience in Whitby. We chose here to have our last stop of the day. We have been visiting the area to see family and thought we would treat ourselves, at a £22 bill. I only asked if the martini was as I liked, but the response was less than friendly. We got chucked out of the seat given to us outside but next doors shop, and ending ended up gulping down what was meant to be the luxury drink of the day. Dissatisfied and disappointed.

Wonderful time and great food. Bar staff very friendly. Could not have asked for a better experience. Will definitely visit again on our next trip to Whitby.

Waitress was slow and grumpy…expensive for what it isn

The drinks were OK. The staff were friendly enough, but the food we ordered was poor. The calamari was stringy and chewy, and the coating was burnt. There were only five rings of it, and it cost £10.50. We also had steak loaded fries. There were six tiny pieces of chewy steak on the fries. Those were almost a tenner too. I found the whole setting very pretentious. For two starter type dishes and two drinks, it was almost £40. Very disappointed on the whole. We have walked past a few times with our kids over the years, and always said we'd like to go in and try it when kids free... I don't think we'd go back again.

Popped in for a cuppa and enjoyed the view. Then again in the afternoon for a cocktail or two. Quite a busy place, with freshly made cocktails. Babies and dogs welcome.

A lovely early dinner during our trip to Whitby. Service was amazing as was the food and the cocktails were even better! Would definitely recommend and will definitely return! We would recommend booking as it got quite busy.

Booked for a Sunday turned up 3 deep at the bar offered a table literally at the front door asked for an alternative staff pointed to another table with no seats but said she wasn't keen on us sitting there as she ," needed to run the bar ". Picture gallery online clearly shows a separate dining area other than sitting in the bar I understand nothing is guaranteed but the staff attitude stinks clearly on this night at least totally focused on making money at the bar ended up In the magpie instead it was delicious and great staff ,couldn't recommend this place under any circumstances..

Cold, damp tables, floors, mirrors, as though there's been an issue with water. Not a warm dry atmosphere upstairs at all. Needs a dehumidifier I think 🤔 I don't think they should be serving food upstairs at the moment...

We have been here at least 10 times over the last 10 years or so and always had a great experience. But unfortunately on this occasion I have to say the food at moon and sixpence from starters to mains was very poor.

Came into here with my sister, upon leaving we accidentally left our shopping. When we went back after around 40 minutes inquiring for the bag, the service staff acted extremely awkward, one girl slightly flushed and nervous. They explained someone else had come in and claimed that our shopping was theirs. However right before leaving another customer informed us that the person who left with the shopping had stated the bag was not there’s but wanted the groceries, and instead of saying no and putting it behind the counter separately, the staff told them they were free to take it. Following this, according to the customer who informed us, they left giggling, very apparently not theirs and the staff did nothing. Very upset as this was fresh seafood we spent a lot of money on as a treat and cannot normally afford. Instead of putting it aside they just handed it out then gaslit us. Extremely unprofessional behaviour.

amazing food, drinks, location and cute decor, but the incredible service comes out on top!! welcomed immediately by friendly bar staff before we took our seats in the restaurant area out back. waitress was chatty and kind, answered all our questions. kitchen and bar don’t skimp! we got tons of delicious food for what we ordered, proper pints and big cocktails. when we finished our meals, we were offered a table by the window overlooking the river. everything was perfect, but the ladies working front of house on the evening of 21st jan are so thoughtful and a real credit to your team thank you!!!

1 of the servers let the team down - busy NYE around 7.30pm would have been a good atmosphere but the young girl had a miserable attitude. Took our order, and we waited patiently for our drinks as she then began unloading the dishwasher. Didn't tell us if we should sit and have them brought over or wait, we waited over 20 mins for these drinks which were basically dropped on the table with no eye contact. The other older girl was doing a great job and seemingly all the work!

Me and my wife have walked past for years and have seen it booming and never managed to get it. Recently we managed to get in and were the only table in. The selections of drinks, fantastic, the food we ate was brilliant, the location lovely, the venue very well decorated. I can see the effort the owner has put into the business. I also know the owner is heavily pregnant ‘and I don’t know why she bothers coming in or why we are still open’ ‘we are literally staying open till 8pm for 1 table tonight’ that table was us. When we asked what she recommend, her reply was I don’t like cheese, so I don’t eat anything from here. Brilliant I thought. Everything seemed too much for her. She did recommend the small plates but still it came across, I wouldn’t eat here. The barmaid would also slag every aspect of Whitby off to her friends that kept popping in for drinks. My daughter needed the loo, there was human poo all over the toilet seat, the toilets were disgusting. The place was empty, the place shouldn’t be dirty. The barmaid also made it clear to her friends she can’t remember the last time she mopped. What I’m trying to say is I can see the effort the owner has put in to have built up a fantastic business here. The food is brilliant, the front of house single member of staff is terrible and hate her job. She does not deserve a wage. In my profession they wouldn’t tolerate her rudeness or laziness. In my opinion she is ruining your business and needs to be let go. It has honestly ruined my day. Good food, good drinks, good location. Terrible hospitality. Sorry to give you this review but I hope you see why. All the time we were there we felt were an inconvenience whilst we had to listen to her say how much she hated her job. All we wanted to do was enjoy a family holiday meal

Ok here goes. I have had many many examples of my favorite cocktail (Espresso Martini) and to date my pinnacle has been Harvey Nichols cocktail bar. Until now !!! I applauded the skill of the staff at The Moon and Sixpence. This is my new number one Espresso Martini bar. If you are a fan of this cocktail, please check out The Moon and Sixpence, you won't regret it 👍.

Staff are rude, rather talk to local workmen at the bar than taking orders for their drinks which are ridiculously overpriced as it is. Was made to feel as an inconvenience. Won't be going back

We only popped in for a quick drink before the NYE fireworks. Very friendly staff and the prices were reasonable.

Great bar in Whitby, nice selection of wines and atmosphere. Crab cakes were very good, calamari was ok but not that good. Only thing I wouldn't recommend. Other than that 5/5

Went here a few weeks ago was really looking forward to it but it was actually quite disappointing. We have been here before & each time we come to Whitby we used to like coming here. Not this time. Even though we booked a table in advance we were given a small poky table which was very draughty. Was going to ask to be moved but by the time the waitress came back she had given all the other better tables to the walk-in customers. The food took ages to come & the “walk-in” people who came in after us got served before us. I imagine they were locals & obviously prioritised! I had the lobster 🦞 (which I’ve had before) this time it was overcooked & very average with the biggest amount of chips that nobody probably ever eats. Also the decor of the place has gone very downhill must have been done cheaply. It used to have wooden booths & carpet on the floor now it’s just cheap tables & chairs & laminate floor so no wonder it’s so cold. I don’t think we’ll be bothering with here again as it’s overpriced for what you get & service needs attention as if your just a tourist they obviously think you’re not worthy of good customer service.

What a lovely spot, walked past this place about a hundred times, had a coffee but never food. Table was lovely, staff really professional and friendly. Totally handled the drunk punters! Relaxed atmosphere, food was delicious and plenty of choice. Wine was really good too Scampi and cheese fritters for starters Mac n cheese and halloumi mains, then followed the food coma 🫣 Great night, would definitely go back and we'll worth a visit.

We have been visiting on our annual December getaway for the last few years and this place never disappoints. The highlight of our visit this year was the Ferro Roche cocktail, omg what a triumph, this has to be the best cocktail ever!!!! Would absolutely highly recommend x

Breakfast was disappointing. The sausages were good as were the hash browns. Apart from that, the rest of the food was not hot enough. The mushrooms and bacon were overcooked and the poached egg was hard. Disappointing for £12.

Called in for a drink before dining at the sister restaurant next door. There’s a great selection of cocktails as well plenty of spirits to choose from. It’s a bit lacking in atmosphere but that’s not really a problem for us

Lovely atmosphere,we only had cocktails,but they were excellent. They currently have 12 Christmas cocktails on offer at the moment, two for £18. Expertly made and worth every penny,I highly recommend the "All I want for Christmas" cocktail. Unable to eat here due to lack of vegan options.

Spectacularly good cocktails and exceptional customer service.

Lovely find, nicely decorated, friendly waitress. Varied choice of food which was all very tasty but we did feel like we had to wait a while before it was served. Enjoyable experience all the same.

Bit disappointing to be honest. Have been here before for breakfast which I remember being very tasty. Came for dinner with a group of friends. I had the philly cheesesteak loaded fries which were £9.50 and bbq chicken wings. They consisted of a reasonable sized bowl of chips with less than a handful of pretty bland looking steak chunks and a scattering of grated mozzarella cheese on it. Boring, lacking imagination, not very good value for money. Lazy cheffing or chef's hands tied by the need to turn a profit? Not sure, probably a bit of both. But you'd get the same thing from a takeaway for less half the price. Should have been a lot better than that. Chef could do a lot, lot better. The wings were also very average. Tiny, lacking in flavour, uninteresting. It's a nice venue, staff were friendly and attentive but the food was a huge let down. Would come back for drinks but not to eat. 👎
