Booked in for 1pm Sunday lunch. Appears short staffed 1 member serving at the bar and waitressing. Place mats and cutlery arrived after finally ordering these were plonked on the edge of the table we arranged them ourselves. Food took 1hr15min to arrive. We were reminded how busy they are with a table of 9 and a 5. The kitchen really need to get on it in comparison to other places the service was very slow. The food though was really really nice. I can't recommend to friends due to the long wait

We are local to the Denison arms but haven't used it for quite awhile, and not since the newish current owners took over. Thought we would give it a try again, and booked Sunday lunch. We didn't have starters just the main Sunday carvery, Wife had the small size while I had the large size. There were 3 choices of meat, Beef, Turkey and Gammon plus a nut roast for the none meat eaters. Wife chose the Gammon and I had the beef. We both liked our meals, albeit mine was rather large with enough Beef slices on my plate to feed two adults and a child so definitely worth the money! Service was good with the waitress enquiring if we needed anything with our meal, and then while eating it, checking that everything was okay. I would have given 5 stars but for one small thing, a bit nit picky I know, but I like my roast potatoes golden brown and with crispy outers, the ones we both got were almost white, they were cooked inside okay though. All in all a pleasurable experience, and we would certainly go there again.

Extremely disappointed in our Sunday lunch . Hard roast potatoes and lumpy mash but more importantly, very tough beef , I wasn’t able to cut it much less eat it . When the server came to remove our plates I said I wasn’t able to cut the meat , she suggested I should have asked for a steak knife . She took the plates away and returned with the bill ! Whilst I appreciate these things happen , as a visitor to the area , I will definitely not be recommending this place in the visitors book or verbally to anyone. I did write to the manager immediately but have had no response.

I ha e lived in East Ayton since 1995 and have been coming here an awful lot. In the past couple of years this village pub has seen a lot of refurbishment and attracts many folk these days. The staff are faultless and work 100% to deliver good customer satisfaction. The atmosphere is a very friendly one and the Denisons is dog friendly. I cannot recommend it highly enough

After asking at another pub down the road if we needed to book, and being told no if we sat in the garden, we then turned up at it later and was quite rudely told that if we hadn’t booked we couldn’t eat as they were really busy, and we should of booked ! we left and found this amazing little village pub up the road. We went in and ordered drinks and food. It was quite busy for food, but we didn’t have much of a wait for it , it was brought to us fairly quick, the staff were nice and friendly and the food was delicious… I’m so glad the other pub turned us away, and if we’re up that way again, we’ll definitely return

Second visit for us. This time it was very busy and the poor girl serving us was rushed off her feet and basically on her own to do everything. Despite this she still managed to smile and get everything on our order correctly served to our table in a more than reasonable time. They had run out of the steak and gammon, probably due to how busy they were. Overall, if you find yourself passing by I would recommend dropping in. I certainly will👍

Visiting the area and called in on Friday evening. Found a table and went to the bar to make staff aware of our presence so I could get some menus and if we were okay sitting on any table that wasn't reserved. Upon speaking to the barmaid it was made to feel like I should have gone to the bar first upon arrival before sitting down? (Bearing in mind there were quite a few empty tables). Was giving two menu's but no kids one which I had to look up online. Went back to the bar to order and it was only then did the same barmaid who gave me the menu's let know that there might be a delay with ordering food - great! But of course I could order some drinks whilst we waited and the waitress, Polly I think, would take our order. So we waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually the waitress came to take our order and my wife asked how long the food was going to be as we had a one year old with us. We were given a time so placed an order. She did apologise for the delay and that she was under instructions from the kitchen. Time was getting on and our one year old was getting more restless and I very nearly cancelled the food order a few minutes before it arrived. When the food did arrive it was nice but by this point we'd have eaten anything. To be fair none of this was the waitresses fault who was really friendly throughout but did seem to be on her own without any assistance from the bar staff who were just talking amongst themselves. She was having to let other tables know about the delay in the kitchen and should have had some help to serve tables waiting to place orders for as long as they were. Overall a bit disappointed by the whole experience really and personally I didn't think the pub looked that busy when we went (finally got food around 6:30pm) so I'd hate to see it busy. Will hold my hands up if I should of gone to bar on arrival first but the overall service feedback still applies.

The premises were clean, friendly and welcoming. My only (one) issue was lack of vegetarian options, which has appeared to be an issue with a lot of restaurants/pubs in North Yorkshire. The pub was clean and traditional, with a small but more than adequate menu. Had Sunday dinner here with my parents - booked table for 4pm. When we came in it was obvious they didn’t have the reservation written down and asked if we wanted a table for 3. They then set a table for us. It wasn’t busy (some people sat at the bar) so basically could have set up any table in the whole pub. Ordered 2 small dinners and one large (one small portion of veg came) was enough for maybe 2 people but barely. Had to ask for extra portion. We finished and the plates were collected but the staff didn’t ask if wanted desserts or drinks - sat with empty glasses at this point. I asked if we needed to order drinks at the bar in the end and they said they would get us the drinks. This did then make sense though at 5.05pm when one of the staff put a sign on the table saying booked from 5:30pm and walked away. I found this slightly annoying but figured we did have 1.5 hours from table booking time of 4pm so fair enough. Then by 5.10pm the staff were literally hovering at the table waiting for us to go. The people who made the 5.30pm booking had turned up 20minutes early and they wanted the table. I just don’t understand why they put us on this one table that they needed back by before 5:30pm and I also don’t understand why they wanted us off the table 20mins before the booked time just because the other people had turned up. We made a booking just like they did. In the end we were being crowded by the people who came for the table and the staff and I just wanted to get out of there at this point (my dad still had half his pint) - a lot of the other tables were reserved as well but obviously this particular one was booked earlier than the rest as they were all still free at this point. Generally just thought the whole thing was really poorly managed and rude, as it felt as though we literally got rushed out of the pub. Not sure if we were charged extra for the veg or not as I didn’t even have a second to look at the bill. All in all just not a good experience and pretty disappointing.

Visited the Denison arms for lunch yesterday. My partner and I have been in a few times for a drink but never to eat. So we booked for 7 of us to go for lunch as we had some family members visiting. Everyone is so friendly there and the waitress was lovely and really looked after us. We just had main courses and a drink and we had to wait approximately 40 minutes for our main course, but it was worth the wait! The food was all fresh, home cooked food and fresh vegetables. The steak, stilton, guiness and onion pie was gorgeous and proper comfort food with thick pastry and an individual pot of gravy. Couple of us had gammon and egg which was beautifully cooked, another had a burger and my partner who is vegetarian had the bean chilli which he said was very tasty! The chips were home cooked and not cheap frozen ones. Thank you for a lovely meal, we will definitely eat here again and definitely will be in for drinks again as the pub has a lovely atmosphere. Cant believe we moved here just a year ago and not going around to eating here before. We look forward to seeing what other dishes you may come up with and looking at the website, the themed food evenings sound very appealing too!

I can’t knock this Pub! The pub is spotless, no sticky tables here, the carpet was clean and no dropped food. Cutlery was clean. These are just basic things but if they are right you know your food is right. Will behind the bar was welcoming. The price was very reasonable for this area! We had Gammon, Pie and burger. Clean plates left. Followed by two sticky toffee puddings. I like the pub because it has a low ceiling and gives you that snug feeling. Would defo recommend and we are close by on a Caravan site and will be back. Also the choice of beer is tops - the Heineken is quality! Obviously my favourite!

We booked a table for 7:30pm and when we arrived bang on they didn’t have a table ready for us. As it was a small entrance we stood lingering with drinks until someone called us over - please bear in mind the restaurant wasn’t exactly busy. As we sat waiting to order it was a good 20 minutes until we was seen to. There was 6 of us, two of which ordered the prawns as mains and 50-1 hour later, the food arrived. All be it my prawns. Food looked great but when I questioned that my prawns hadn’t arrived, he merely stated “did you order them” and scurried to the kitchen. He came back with a statement “your prawns have been included in the other persons dish - so to put it politely there’s one dish to share between two AS A MAIN. now this I could not quite comprehend as 1 we could of been sat at either end of the table, how could we share? It’s a singular dish not sharing platter. He said he could take it away and split it? I was shocked! I said don’t worry and we continue to PORTION the prawns out between us. When we finished plates were collected but no offer of dessert until we requested 20 minutes after. No information given just a board handed to the table. We also had to then ask for our dessert order to be taken. To which the. Then returned telling us 1 dessert was now not available. No dinners in at this point bare us! Awful service, food was good but not the best given a split portion!

We recently found ourselves at The Denison Arms whilst on holiday. The pub we had booked for our evening meal went back on our agreed booking and specifically requested table. Our autistic 7 year old son ended up having a meltdown, as he knew where we going, and going to be sitting etc. More importantly, he knew he was going to be having chocolate brownie for dessert! This happened on a Friday evening, and we knew that we would be hard pushed to find somewhere to accommodate us at such short notice. After a short drive around and with our son in meltdown mode, my partner went into the Denison Arms to see if they may have a table free. He spoke with Claire, who I believe runs the pub, who said they did have availability for dining. However, when he explained that we needed a chocolate brownie, she explained that they did not have one on the menu. The locals sat in the bar were wondering where they could obtain a chocolate brownie, and one even offered to go to a local shop to buy one! Claire then remembered that she had bought a chocolate brownie for herself, and kindly offered it to give it our son! We enjoyed what was some of the nicest food I've eaten in a pub for a long time, sat in a very welcoming, cosy pub that was light and spacious enough to feel like you had space to breathe. Service was fairly quick, to say that the food appeared genuinely homemade. Most importantly, we truly valued how Claire went above and beyond to make sure our boy had his needs met. Instead of asking us what meal options he may like, she made a point of addressing him directly, and her staff were just as friendly and understanding. I wish we had discovered this gem towards the start of our holiday, rather on the last evening, but we will definitely be back! Thankyou so much, Claire!

Been here before & enjoyed... Gotta say though it's gone downhill, I came here to review but saw the last two were from the incident I observed, that has put me off. The man choked, was treated like he was a problem & staff kept focusing on him potentially vomiting, embarassed him, maybe focus on the medical situation? Have compassion? & I also heard some odd comments about the welfare of their dog which was so uncalled for. We didn't stay. It was so uncomfortable. Asking for truthful reviews & getting friends to post A* ones since is shoddy. Can confirm the reviews are true! Dunno what's happened since my last visit but can no longer recommend. Give it a miss! ** Owner replied, but I conveniently have no way to reply to them... "Can we ask when you visited today ?" You know when the incident occurred so asking isn't needed & saying there was only one other couple sitting & eating food... Is implying I'm lying. It's not a road you should go down if you're the respectable business you imply you are. I'm ignoring the rudeness, As i said we didn't stay, because of what we saw. 'No one was asked to leave' I didn't say anything about anyone being asked to leave?? I can see the reviews left from the people involved did, but I didn't see that. 'unwell and his clothing soiled' I saw a man choking & you gave him water, which he coughed while trying to drink. You're a food establishment, choking is a very real risk. You treated him (& I can see in the language you are using as well) As less than human. 'Not quite understanding your comments on “ friends leaving reviews ???' After what I saw today & then two reviews left from the people involved. (That you're suggesting are false reviews) Followed by someone leaving a glowing one...to me that looks suspect. As for relying on customers honest reviews, maybe take them on board? You have three here you are doing your best to make look like lies and that won't build you customer trust! 'It can be very damaging for anyone trying to do their job to their best abilities' please refrain from trying to guilt trip. The correct response should be: I'm sorry you've had a bad experience with us today, I can assure you this is not usually the normal service that we provide. Thank you for your feedback today we will be taking it into account moving forward when we put our best efforts into training our staff fully in safeguarding, first aid, customer welfare & customer service. I'm sorry you didn't feel welcomed or comfortable enough to stay with us today and we will work on this moving forward. Maybe try that next time & learn to apologise. As I said we left, we went elsewhere, we will not be making a trip to you again. ***more edits due to another response this owner knows I can't reply to. This isn't a battle. It's an honest review which you are too bull headed to take on professionally so are accusing me of leaving false reviews. Looking me up online & looking through my old reviews is kind of creepy. Infact that's kind of unsettling behaviour. The more you come at me for sharing an experience in your establishment that made us feel unsafe, the worse you look & it's doing a better job at convincing people to stay away than my review would on its own! Anyway now you've stalked me, you can see from my past reviews on Google the years that span inbetween which shows you I don't often have bad experiences & I only review when I do. My good experiences are usually expressed to the people in person. You will have also now seen my very real review about a very real medical emergancy we had in a food establishment with my young daughter... So maybe seeing what we did in yours, goes some way to explain why we felt uncomfortable & left. If you treated that man that way, how would you treat us? In short we weren't hanging around to find out & warning others about it, is my right. It's what reviews are for, If you can't handle that (& you have proved you can't) do better. Wherever that family are, I hope they are OK & it didn't ruin their holiday.

Only interested in locals, turned non locals away saying they were full but if a local turned up suddenly there was space? Empty tables all round. Staff were rude and my partner who is epileptic and on a lot of medication was kicked out because he was unwell even though all he did was choke on some water given to him. Heard loads of complaints about cold food the 5 minutes we were there. Complete waste of time and a waste of a 50 minute walk there and back!

Just terrible. Walked in at 6.30, ordered 15 minutes later, no one came to take our order so I ordered at the bar. I asked what the winter warmer menu was they had no idea, a man stood next to me (not staff) said it maybe as stew. I ordered 2 scampi, 1 gammon and a steak, 1 gin and tonic and a bottle of pinot plonk. 90 minutes later the food arrived., very grim 9 pieces of scampi, onion rings forgotten wrong peas, limp horrible salad. As soon as we had finished eating I decided pay the bill and leave. I was horrified at £101! I said this must be wrong, apparently the chips (frozen aunt Bessie’s) were £2 extra on top of the £18.95 steak, the waitress said well if you think it’s wrong I’ll take them off the bill, the menu said it came with chips. Next to the drinks, I was asked if we had 2 pints of dark fruits and a small wine. I said no so this was taken off the bill. I’m glad I challenged this, if not I would have been massively overcharged. Still £90 was far to much. Go to the Forge Valley inn, much better food and service. Complete shambles. Edit. This is how the food was served. The salad was given 5 minutes after the steak. The onion rings were forgotten then finally arrived 20 minutes later. The scampi was ordered one with mushy peas, one with garden, both were served with garden. Shambles used to be excellent 10 years ago.

Just had lunch at the Dennison, the steak pie I had was perfect and my wife's choice of Chicken Gyros Kebab was also superb, our guests had Vegatable lasagne each also both cooked to perfection. Would definitely recommend and we be going again.

I enjoyed my meal there and it was just good pub food. The atmosphere was a bit sterile but we were in a group and had a good time.

Still fantastic food and friendly staff . I Haven't been, since it shut down a few years ago. Now it's been redecorated and refurbished, it's even better now. Food was brilliant and didn't need to book either. It was hot and tasty couldn't eat it all. This will be my go to restaurant when on the way to Scarborough

Absolutely beautiful fish & chips . Good portions and considerably cheaper than fish & chips in nearby Whitby hence the full restaurant and busy takeaway queue . They never disappoint .

We only really had drinks apart from our daughter who had a cheeseburger 🍔. She ate it all and enjoyed that! It looked like a good mixture of food on the menu though. Good selection of drinks and dog friendly. One of the few places on the front that allow children and dogs in at night.

The food is lovely; fresh cooked to order. I had the Lite Bite option with extra peas which was very filling and tasty. I visited Scarborough on Easter Sunday so expected it to be busy but it was very quiet in Wackers. Edit: Visited again, today, 2nd October and had another delicious meal-this time I remembered to take a photo😹 If you like tartare sauce you’ll love Wacker’s version; homemade, light, zingy and delicious! Highly recommended! Edit: October 2024 I popped in for lunch today, ordering the Senior Special which consisted of fruit juice, small haddock and chips, bread and butter and a pot of tea: delicious!
