Inghams Fish Restaurant in Scarborough

I have visited many times over the years, but this visit left us disappointed. We were the first customers of the day in the restaurant the seats and floor hadn't been cleaned from the night before. We had to brush food of the seats before we could sit down. The restaurant was on the cold side not welcoming. Our orders were taken no problem there. Everything arrived perfectly. We were a large group, those who had fish and chips found the batter too thick and undercooked. The chips were small and sharp. It has put us off returning.

Good take away fish and chips, haddock was fresh and firm. Good mushy peas and curry sauce

The obvious popularity of this place speaks for itself.. The fish and chips were perfect and I had a large curry sauce and a pot of tea.. I would definitely recommend that you go here to try it..

Delicious food today. Haddock & chips. gives us that England feeling again on our first day of holiday.

We wanted lunch here and there were two people queuing outside so we joined the queue.There were vacant tables although it was busy. Another two couples joined the queue but no staff came to speak to us and it was very cold to have to wait outside. After about 15 minutes of being ignored, the two couples behind us gave up. Some customers came out but still no attention from staff so we gave up too. We called at the takeaway next door to tell them we had waited in vain and been totally ignored, but the bearded man behind the counter was quite hostile and said they were very busy. He was not apologetic not did he attempt to explain why nobody had at least come to us to let us wait indoors or say there was a long delay. Customer service non existent! Needless to say, we went elsewhere to spend our money and were welcomed

staff looked pissed off that I went in, I ordered fish chips and a battered sausage, they got my order wrong and huffed when I told them, the fish must have been sat out for a long while as it was as dry as a slipper, they didn't even close the boxes and left me to struggle with it on the counter... maybe I got unlucky, but this is a solid 1/10 for service and 2/10 food (the chips were edible) I will be trying one of the many others in Filey next time, won't go back here.

Great food, service and lovely staff who really wanted to make you feel welcome.

Went in with ten of us, was told no one could share and no one could order off the kids menu as a few people didn’t want a large

the menu didn't state the fishcakes were smoked so I was wasn't able to eat them no one came to ask if the meal was OK Very disappointed as came from Leeds for the day

Cozy place for fish and chips in Filey. Fresh fish and portions are good. It's near to the beach. And also they decorated it nicely.

Friendly staff and quick service We had the cod and chips. The fish was delicious but unfortunately the chips were not very good 😕. I also had the mushy peas which were very good and piping hot.

Consistently the best fish and chips in the country. Cooked in Beef dripping like they should be. Been coming here 20 years and always the best. My wife and her parents have been coming here since it opened over 40 years ago! I always get the special which is a good portion for those with a bigger appetite.

We  opted just for chips this time, to go with our sandwich. While a decent amount for the price, my chips were dry. As I don't like vinegar, or sauce or salt, this made them hard to eat. I must remember to order peas or curry sauce or gravy next time! Not up to the usual standard for me. Shame.

Visited for the 1st time today for lunch with a friend who wanted fish and chips, I was in desperate need of a chip butty with curry sauce to dip it in. We both left stuffed to the gills and extremely happy! Great service, lovely helpful staff and fantastic food! Very understanding of dietary needs!

All good, super batter on the fish and tasty. Chips same as most places but cooked nicely(shame everybody uses maris pipers) but i get why. Staff really lovely and liked the decor, great place for seaside chippy meal. P.s a whopper for reg.

I don’t like giving bad reviews as it can affect people’s livelihood but today the takeaway offer was average at best. It should have been called chips and batter, because that’s all I got. Lots and lots of batter on a tiny fish , chips ok but the fish very poor indeed. Not totally terrible but definitely less than average

Absolutely beautiful fish & chips . Good portions and considerably cheaper than fish & chips in nearby Whitby hence the full restaurant and busy takeaway queue . They never disappoint .

Wow! Just eaten here and had the best Haddock and chips ever. Crispy battered haddock with fresh chips and Scampi and chips. The portions were huge . Will definitely go here again when next in the area. You must eat here for a taste sensation.

Really good fish and chips. Why else would you go! Simple food, simple menu but who goes to Filey and not have fish and chips.

Visited Saturday 19th October for a proper fish and chips lunch. Didn’t disappoint at all! Everything cooked fresh and to perfection not greasy or stodgy at all. Be aware the portions are huge! Including the sides (even a regular) so go hungry or ask for half portion of chips! Absolutely fantastic! We will be back!

Best fish and chips in YORKSHIRE

As a group of seven girlfriends away for a weekend at the East Coast we decided to have Saturday lunch here. The service was fantastic - efficient and friendly the young lady checking back that all was ok. One friend drenched her fish n chips mistakenly with sugar - still delicious she said after brushing the sugar off and sprinkling salt instead. All in all service, food and atmosphere spot on. Thank you.

I had large cod and chips in this restaurant on Saturday and I could not praise the food and service enough. The price of the food is very fair and the portions were fantastic. The service was very very friendly and efficient. Can not recommend this place enough. If your in Filey head there for a treat.

Some of the best fish and chips I've had, in very pleasant surroundings and with excellent, friendly service. Value for money was excellent, as the portion sizes are huge, fish was tasty and fresh, and the drinks and sides were also very good prices. Happy to recommend.

Called in today and ordered a special haddock. I’m difficult to please with fish & chips, but they’ve got this sorted to perfection. Beef dripping for frying, a crisp batter, beautiful moist flakes within. Flavoursome. Friendly staff. I think the ventilation needs a little attention (window was drenched in condensation and found I needed some air by the time it came to leave - perhaps it was a one off?), but would happily still return

$0 years of going to Inghams and NEVER a bad experience - though far cheaper for us oldies now kids have grown up! I had "small" Haddock and half scoop of chips, fish was absolutely beautiful, meaty, fresh, not greasy, light crispy batter, chips cooked perfectly. OH had the "standard" Haddock and chips - for the price and quality and portion size Inghams far outweighed any competitor. Have to say the service was outstanding and faultless on both occasions we visited from all the staff. Felt welcome and valued. Looking forward to seeing you all in May 2025 Inghams - 40 years later and you have never let us down - a massive thank you!

We were a group of 13 at the end of walking the Cleveland Way. Tired and very wet, we were welcomed and looked after by the wonderful Andrea. The fish and chips was outstanding, beautifully fresh, cooked and served to order and absolutely delicious. The service friendly and helpful. Definitely the place for fish and chips in Filey. Will definitely return anytime I am in the area.

Queued for 15 mins over a busy rainy lunchtime, but I'm British, we love a queue! We were kept informed of times, staff were polite and friendly and the food was worth the wait.

We had a very good meal nice and hot plenty to eat staff were very helpful will be going back 👍

If you are stopping at primrose valley you have got to try Inghams Fish Restaurant just a little drive away. Had haddock and chips with X2 carlsberg My partner had the same but with a pot of tea 'Yorkshire tea'. Friendly staff good service, probably the best battered fish I've had!!! (We ate in the restaurant) If you are visiting and near Filey worth a sit in and sample yourself, you won't be disappointed!!!😉

Hands down the best fish and chips we've had anywhere in the UK. Regular haddock and chips, was plenty even for me and my large appetite, the fish was cooked perfectly with nice light batter and the chips were so moorish. Very reasonably priced and we didn't have to wait long to get a table, we highly recommend eating here if you're visiting Filey!

Simply the best fish and chips I've ever had

Traditional chippie done very well. Batter on haddock was excellent. Mushy peas still recognisable as peas unlike the green paste that others sometimes do.

Smashing food as expected - we drove from Hull to Filey just for the experience. Its years since either of had been but it was just as good as ever.

Recommended by friends, this place didn't disappoint. Great service from the moment we arrived. Menu included smaller portions (perfect for my elderly mum) and other fish dishes which was good. We went for the cod and chips with mushy peas. It was enormous!! Best we have had in a long time and peas were delicious.. highly recommend this place.

Lovely place for fish and chips, generous portions, tasted delicious. We had my toddler niece with us, plenty of space for a high chair at tables in the back.

I always call in here when I’m in Filey - Fish and chips with scraps a short walk from the beach. You can’t go wrong!

Popped up to Filey with my mum and found this spot for lunch. We hadn't quite found our go to for Filey as we don't visit often. I have to say that, though the prices are a little higher than elsewhere, the quality of the fish was spot on and tasted great. Chips are chips, they taste decent enough overall. The staff were very friendly (Not surprising as most people in Filey are) though I'm glad we didn't arrive later as we may have struggled to get a table as we saw people starting to queue up outside. All in all, a great place to go for a good Fish and Chips.

Last ones in before it closed at 7pm….. we were seated very quickly and our order was taken… was surprised to see we could order wine and larger with our meal. Food arrived quite quickly and I have to say it was absolutely beautiful and that it was honestly the best fish & chips I have ever tasted. Would definitely go again and most definitely recommend.

I went to Ingram’s chip shop and very disappointed this year . I been going for the past 4 years when I do my yearly holiday trip to Filey . Firstly you are treated by a server who face and body language shows she doesn’t want to be there and there is no welcoming smile or hello -remember it’s all about the customer service not just the food . So when she so unenthusiastically takes your order - like your on her time and she isn’t on your time -and you have had for a haddock she produces a flat unappealing piece of battered fish . I only eat haddock and have done since a child so I kno haddock is the more meaty of fish esp compared to a cod . This piece of fish that was presented to me definitely wasn’t a haddock and tasted mediocre. The battered fish cake which was an order for a family member tasted like sausage meat and definitely not the type of fish cake we are use to as Northerners . My family member even said “ that chip shop has gone down hill compared to last year “ .. The only saving grace was a carton of mushy peas which were served piping hot and tasted beautiful . I only hope next year we get a service with a smile and a bit of small talk from a server who actually looks like they want to be there and love the job they do . I also hope a haddock represents a big meaty piece of fish next year . All in all a very disappointing 4/10 this year .. and the miserable service is the main reason for such a low score .

Good food,the place a little tired

The restaurant not busy with empty tables kept families with children waiting in the rain, when asked to be seated via chip shop next door was rude. was then talked about by staff loudly for not just waiting. Then told our custom would not be missed when leaving a review. We didn't even get to eat as they had no cod at 5.30pm. Looks lovely from outside, staff look smart, restaurant looks clean but best avoiding rudeness.

Lovely place to grab fish and chips always a que but doesn't take long to go down and it's worth waiting for the best fish and chips around 😋

Always feel welcome and quality food

So after waiting outside for 10 mins to be seated(because they make you wait at the door) it started to rain with about 12 people in the queue. Went to the takeaway side of the restaurant to ask who was seating people as it was raining, to be basically told to wait a member of staff will seat you in due course. Member of staff seated us to overhear one of the staff saying to another those were the ones moaning about waiting. Waitress came over to take our order so ordered 2 large cod and chips to be told they had sold out of cod at 17.15pm, how on earth can a fish and chip shop run out of cod at teatime. Needless to say we walked out and found somewhere else to eat and the £60 I spent was in someone else's till. WOW what a reply from the business it's a wonder you still have customers with that attitude.

This place was recommended by a friend of my wife's and we are glad we came, very large portions of very tasty fish and chips. Staff very attentive and friendly.

Food and service was excellent! Best fish and chips we ever had, the portions were large,both the cod and haddock were nicely done and flavorful. Service was amazing, eventhough we had to wait outside for like 30 mins to be served. Our server went the extra mile giving us recommendations for nice places to visit. We would definately come back to the place if we lived locally.

Food was excellent, but as it's very popular for a very good reason. Be prepared for a bit of a wait. Took me about 15 min to get served. Oh and if you want cod, order it when you get in the door as your waiting as they cook it to order.

Sat in for a late lunch when the restaurant was almost empty. Drinks order took 20 minutes to arrive, it was explained to us that waitress took our order then went on her break and forgot them.... but no apology offered. No cod left when it came to ordering, but we arrived at 3pm which is an awkward time so that was fair enough. Went to pay and were told we needed the slip that came with the food. Hunted for it at the table to find it under a plate covered in curry sauce. Told the guy when we handed it to him that it wasn't legible as it had curry sauce all over it, to which his reply was "yeah but it's not much curry" which was a bizarre response. Took the payment from us without a word of thanks just silence until it cleared then walked off so I assume it did.... No offer of a receipt - considering we couldn't read the bill it would've been nice to be offered to see what we'd paid. Mens toilets absolutely stunk of stale urine that wafted across the restaurant every time someone went in and out. Very overpriced for average food. Seems that the restaurant lives off it's reputation of old but the standard of the service and general cleanliness are about the worst you could imagine. Lesson learned, never again.

Fantastic place. We were recommended Inghams by my sister as she knew we were in the area. I also took 4 other friends with us so was slightly concerned as they are foodies. However, the food served up was amazing, fish with light crispy batter, none greasy chips and well done peas. Everything was served really nicely and the staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. We all left with full stomachs and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can highly recommend. Thank you sis

Food was mediocre. Salt cellar broke and went all over my food which I couldn't eat. Most of the puddings on the menu were heavy so didn't order. No reduction in the bill after I explained about the salt incident. It was a lovely setting though

This is a very popular fish and chip shop which saw a queue of people waiting to be seated. The fish was fresh with crisp and tasty batter, great chips and amazing traditional fish shop curry sauce. Fair prices for the quality of food and good service from helpful and friendly staff. Highly recommend fish and chip shop. All our party really enjoyed their meals with no complaints.

The most beautiful fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life and the curry was mighty fine too. They were so good we had them two days running 🤣 When back at work telling people they knew of Inghams. That says everything you need to know.

Been here many times. The haddock and chips is always spot on. Probably the best fish and chips on east coast. Ace chips and lovely light crispy batter on tasty fish. They sell alcohol also which is a bonus. The staff are always very pleasant and can't fault the place. So 5 stars all round
