The steak and ale pie is to die for!!! We loved the halloumi fries and the drinks we had! Traditional little pub right on the harbour. Great views from the outside seats of the seat and the cliffs - lovely place for an afternoon drink or a glass of wine before dinner. Inside is busy (with both locals and tourists) and operates a 50/50 walk ins / bookings policy. If you’ve not booked, there’s also a brisk and effective ‘waiting list’ system for tables. Service was excellent- staff were friendly and coped well with very busy weekend. Food was good. Steak pie very generous with meat! My only complaint is that the tables are sticky. They need a good clean as well as the frequent wipe downs!

Called in for a drink and decided to eat. Really busy, but managed to get a table. For saying how busy it was, the service was exceptional. What also stood out was how reasonably priced the food was, especially considering the location of the pub. Consequently didnt have great expectations, but have to say it was superb, both quality and portion size.

Visited for lunch a few days ago thanks to good reviews on Google-- sadly the chef must have been on holiday as although the atmosphere and staff were OK, the fish and chips were the worst I have been given in many years, being clearly stale and kept luke warm for ages before service. We should have kept to our "get Fish and chips in Whitby" plan!

This place is amazing, the food, the atmosphere. So many cool historical photos on the wall. The place was packed when we got there, didn't think we would get a table, but we did. I got the "cod & lobster" which was fantastic, my first time trying a lobster and was well worth it, very tasty, very fresh. The service was super quick. The location is stunning; the food was good value, the beer good; the landlord was grumpy but the staff were nice. Chips tasted a bit stale. Popular pub but there's only a choice of two in the village. Would be better without the right-wing TV news-station on permanent play in the pub. Take it as it comes.

I would avoid this pub if you have any kind of food intolerance. I wrote before we arrived (admittedly only on the same morning) via FB to ask about the intolerance to onion and garlic. Upon arrival, this was immediately discussed with the waitress who got assurance from the kitchen that the dish I had chosen wasn't cooked with either ingredients. When the dish arrived the salad consisted mostly of raw onions which I had to pick out individually, leaving only a couple of limp lettuce leaves in their wake. The rice was cooked with copious amounts of oil (also terrible for a delicate gut) and of course another ton of onion which were about 2mm squares, all of which had to be picked out. I got very fed up with doing that so gave my rice away to hubby. Early on in the meal I was asked how it was by another waitress. I showed her the ton of onions I had picked out at that stage and pointed out there should not have been any. I could hear her relaying this to management and the kitchen who did absolutely nothing to offer a replacement dish or any kind of compensation for the situation I was in facing a dish that I was intolerant too. We therefore had to pay for price for a meal my husband had to eat most of. The waitress who was our main one was lovely to our dogs which was lovely. She was the one that kept us there because she was so friendly to us. We would never eat there again though for obvious reasons.

We had lunch here on Tuesday. The menu looked great, we were really looking forward to some local seafood. On arrival it was very tired, a bit dirty to be fair. I had the starter of muscles in the cream sauce which was absolutely lovely. My partner had the scallops which were equally as good. My main was the cod and lobster, which was quite frankly dry and tasteless. I think it was left on the pass too long. The cod had gone crispy and dry on top and the lobster was so dry, I was gutted. My partner had the fish skewers, which were so very dry the rice was ok though. After the meal we were not asked if everything was ok or if we would like desert or more drinks. We had to put our coats on and ask for the bill.. very disappointed.

Do yourself a favour and STAY AWAY. Lovely location but a there’s a bit of a walk to get to because of no onsite parking. Atmosphere was nice and the pub is dog friendly. The bar staff are very friendly and the food service is absolutely excellent. Unfortunately the food is awful. The Oysters were poorly opened with lots of small pieces of shell in every mouthful. The soup of the day was thin and tasteless. Garlic prawns were obviously the cheap frozen type that you’d get from Iceland or Tesco, tasteless and chewy. The squid rings were cold and tasteless. The homemade fishcakes were okay and served hot but the accompanying chips and vegetables were cold (cheap frozen vegetables too) The Monkfish wrapped in Parma Ham were so salty that they were inedible (why wrap delicate Monkfish in very salty strongly flavoured poor quality Parma Ham?) Accompanying Celeriac Mash was very nice but again the cheap frozen vegetables were cold. The curried mayonnaise was inedible. The fish kebabs were very nice but the accompanying chilli rice was powdery and inedible. This has honestly been the worst meal we’ve ever had which is a pity because the staff were so lovely and caring during service. Unfortunately the Chef on the night was clueless, hopefully this was a one off. I wish I’d read the previous bad reviews. Obviously this is not a one off, the Chef really is useless.

Had the chowder and squid rings for starter (both were wonderful), followed by the signature Cod & Lobster which was super tasty, but slightly smaller than expected (not a huge deal, just meant we had space for pudding!) There are seats outside, which we avoided because it was windy and cold, but I imagine it must be brilliant to sit there and eat while watching the bay.

Food was great, massive portions! Couldn't even finish the chicken parmo because it was the size of the plate! 😁 The staff seemed lovely. The only complaint we had was that they didn't manage to put us all on the same table even tho we called and booked in advance. But it was a busy Saturday night so maybe they needed a bit more time to organise it.
