I was delighted when Brew York took over The Mitre earlier this year. It was my "local" in the mid to late 2010s, always with a friendly buzz and loyal regulars - but in recent years it had lost its way, and most of us became regulars elsewhere. In its first few weeks of re-opening, the buzz returned, the pub was busier than it had been in years, and my hopes were high. So, why the 3-star review? After all, the beer is gorgeous, the pub is well kept... and yet that early buzz hasn't been maintained, numbers are down, and most of its trade seems to be coming from visitors, not from locals. That might have worked OK over the summer months, but in order to get through the winter, I think a shift of focus is required (in this regard, the forthcoming changes to the kitchen sound very promising). And here we get to the nub of the problem: no matter how good the beer is, the "hospitality" is almost non-existent. I'm not saying that the staff are rude, but there's no friendly greeting at the bar, beers are served in almost total silence, and the bar staff come across as entirely indifferent. (And just for the record, this is a commonly held view around the town; I've had a lot of conversations about it.) This just won't work in a town like Knaresborough, where friendliness and good conversation are the norm. If The Mitre wants to build up a solid base of regular customers, it MUST engage with them, make them feel welcome, and make far more of an effort to create the sort of good-natured vibe that you'll find in so many other Knaresborough pubs. I still want it to succeed, but I don't think it will succeed until heart and soul are injected into the very bones of the place.

Stayed here many times pre pandemic but this was my first visit since new ownership and refurbished bedrooms. The rooms remain spacious with good bathrooms. They are spotlessly clean, comfortable with everything you need for a night or two. The pub appears not to do food anymore, so we had to eat elsewhere (no hardship) and there’s no breakfast which is a bit inconvenient. Although Knaresborough isn’t short of breakfast options.

Gave The Mitre a visit for lunch after reading about the reopening with new owners. It is situated by Knaresborough railway station off the High Street. The interior has changed, it's very nice and modern but has sadly lost a bit of character. We had the cheese and ham sandwiches that came with delicious fries and salad. I can't remember having a nicer sandwich, they are served on beautiful ciabatta rolls. They have a small hot food selection on the menu with steaks and piri piri chicken etc. We will definitely return.

I can't fault the Brew York mitre at all. I originally went in for a pint whilst I was waiting for the train and the beer was so good, I stayed for lunch. The food is run by Frango's and it was fantastic value for money and really tasty. I had a fish goujon sandwich which came with salad and chips - it was such a big portion I struggled to finish it (even after a 10 mile hike). The Brew york staff were lovely and offered tasters of the variety of beers - all of which were delicious. The venue itself was a nice atmosphere and had the option of the cooler indoors or the outside tables to enjoy the sun. The pub itself is only a short walk from the river front and I was surprised it wasn't as busy as some of the cafes considering the quality. Would definitely visit again.

I ate at The Mitre yesterday and at first it seemed quite nice. The food would have been delicious if it hadn't been loaded with so much salt. Everything tasted of salt and I never have salt in my food due to high blood pressure but no one asked if I had any dietary requirements. The place was a bit grubby and they also seemed to be short staffed.

The Mitre is a smart but simple pub situated next to Knaresborough station. It had a reasonable selection of similar cask beers on, mostly from Roosters. What we liked about it most on one of the hottest days of the year was the fact it was air conditioned. A pleasant enough stop off if you arrive my train.

Redeemed a gift voucher for a 1 nights stay and paid extra to include breakfast. On arrival was told that there is no food served today as it’s New Years Day and was told that breakfast would be served between 8 and 9am the next morning. Arrived downstairs at 8:30am to find apples, cornflakes and 1 yoghurt and no staff. We went back upstairs to find a staff member and was told there was no breakfast as they didn’t have a chef. Very disappointing as we wouldn’t have chose this hotel and certainly wouldn’t have paid extra for breakfast. Nice room but breakfast let it down.

A friendly Inn but offered a continental breakfast that was a complete failure. The rooms are quite expensive so to be greeted by a cold breakfast room, no real coffee - only nescafe - and cold croissants in cellophane packets was just not on. We were given toast but no facilities to warm anything other than toast. Also, despite having a coffee machine in the bar that was also off in the evening at 6.30pm as well as for breakfast. I visit that area regularly to see my family but sadly will not return there.

The Mitre hosted our Wedding celebration in July 2023 and we can't speak more highly of the staff and the service. We were able to rent out the whole pub for the day, work with the head chef to cater a menu and the manager to plan out the day. Nothing was out of reach for the Mitre and their staff, their communication was great, even accommodating last minute requests and changes. The food was delicious, the bar service was excellent and they had more than enough staff to ensure all our guests were happy. We also rented out all the accommodation for out of town guests, the rooms were clean, comfortable and perfect for a short stay. We would highly recommend hosting your next event here.

Visited Knaresborough with friends this weekend and went to the Mitre hoping to get some food and drinks however, upon arrival we were met with an extremely rude waiter with a serious attitude problem. We entered the bar and were all discussing what we were going to have / looking behind the bar at what was on offer (as you usually would). The waiter (who I believe was American) then shouted in my face ‘HELLOOOO’ (which made me jump), to which I replied hello…? he then said, in an extremely rude and aggressive tone ‘THATS AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE WHEN SOMEONE SAYS HELLO’. None of us even heard him say hello prior to that. We left immediately and went on to a lovely and much nicer pub up the road (the Carriages - would recommend). It was extremely odd behaviour and made us (and the waiter’s colleagues) feel very uncomfortable. Their loss - we would have spent a few hundred ££ on food and drink.

We returned later after a trip to Leeds on the train that drops you off next door to the hotel to be greeted by John and his team who gave us such a warm friendly welcome on a glorious sunny day in the busy hotel bar which had a great atmosphere. Rooms were spotless clean. The next morning the warm friendly greeting continued by the chef that did our large breakfast while making sure we had enough toast, tea and coffee. Shambolic and chaotic .Avoid at all costs . Booked a meal here to meet up with family. When we arrived they had no record of our booking even though we had a confirmation e mail . No table was set up and they directed us to a dirty table in the corner . Fish and chips were burnt to a crisp and two of the party suffered upset tummies the next day . Burgers were mediocre and tasteless . As others have commented there was nothing even resembling customer service and we had to fetch drinks from the bar and order food . This in itself is not a problem but when even budget options now allow ordering on an app standing at a bar aimlessly waiting for someone to deign to take an order doesn’t cut it these days . Please avoid !….I live in Knaresborough and am hoping this review will prevent an unsuspecting tourist experiencing this disgrace to our town .

I stayed here when I competed at the Northern Shooting Show this month (May 23). When I arrived I was very tiered. John looked after me and went above and beyond in making my stay comfortable and trouble free. The room was spotless with coffee/tea in the room. The food was homely and filling. The only downside was the parking. Unfortunately, the Mitre Inn has no parking on site and this is due to the layout of the town. However, they do rent parking spaces in a near by secure car park. Its a short walk. So park up outside, drop your belongings off and drive to the secure parking. The Mitre Inn is a lovely place to stay and one I would recommend. Thank you for making me feel so welcome.

Where do I start ! Went in at 5pm so I was the only person in the pub. To cut it short there was going to be 7 of us which they knew about in advance No table set up for us so we dragged a table over to the other one which was filthy. We asked for it to be wiped and we were given a damp dirty cloth out of the sink and told to do it ourselves! We all sat down, and no one came over to take our order so we wrote it all down to hand it to them They got that order at 5.25 and our burnt disgusting meals came to us at 6.40 The gammon had been cut in half to serve two and it was incinerated. Very hard and dry couldn’t eat it. The celeriac mash was an old jacket potato scooped out and heat up with some horseradish sauce. The duck ( they only had one portion) was so badly burnt it set their fire alarm off in the kitchen. I paid £13.95 for a meal I couldn’t even it. The pub was full of smelly dogs and one dog refused the gammon! The bar girl was miserable, dirty hands and very scruffy, lazy cos of her size, terrible to look at and talk to. The toilets were absolutely disgusting and very dirty. What a gross sight Can go on but no point. Just don’t there at all Go to Weatherspoons in Knaresborgh town centre and get food for half the price and you can eat it Honestly the worst place I’ve ever eaten at

We popped in here at lunchtime on the 23rd March. The menu appeared to be an exciting, gastro pub style affair and gave an impression that food was prepared fresh. We decided to have our dinner here. Sadly the food fell far short of what the menu led us to expect. I ordered a honey glazed confit duck, with duck fat roast potatoes, carrots and black cabbage buttered with gravy. The duck had clearly felt the touch of the microwave. There was a hard 'triangle' of something carnalised and burnt on top. This was presumably the glaze that was applied after the removal of the packaging which was then subsequently burnt to a crisp in the microwave. The potatoes had a skin akin to damp cardboard. Whether they had ever been introduced to the duck fat was indeterminable. The carrots were boiled and absolutely fine. Well done! Sadly the cabbage was completely absent but i don't' think this would have saved the dish. One member of staff, a young bearded man, who I believe to be the manager was drinking behind the bar when he thought his colleagues could not see him. Unfortunately the whole bar could! During the 45 minutes we were there, he started with a cheeky shot before downing a beef at impressive speed when his colleague nipped out into the kitchen. The only redeeming part of this experience was the good selection of beers.

Visited on a Sunday for a late lunch after a long walk. Good food selection on the menu something for everyone but when ordered at the bar was told they had run out of chicken (at 3pm) and no mushy peas left. This was disappointing for a pub that serves food 12-8pm. Very little atmosphere and a lack of attention to detail (salt and pepper were completely empty). The prices were steep for the portions. The small fish and chips was more what I would expect for a child's menu. Definitely not worth the £9.95. service was slow but those working were friendly, the food itself was fine, but for the prices I would have expected something more. Has all the making of a great pub as location and look is good.

The waitress was polite, helpful and took our food order - checking that it was correct before she left. So far so good. She soon returned confirming that the vegetarian options selcted were not available, they ordered alternatives.Almost an hour later, the food started to arrive. The delay surprised us as there were few tables occupied (although to be fair, there was a private party downstairs). Two of the food orders were completely wrong and the vegetarians had to wait an additional 25 minutes as they had been given chicken burgers in error. 3 people had sea bass nicoise, none of them had any green beans as advertised and the portion sizes were wildly different. In summary, I would be reluctant to gamble on eating at the Mitre. Decent beer.

We (me, hubby and 6 yr old) arrived tonight(Wednesday) at 7.30pm following a recommendation from a local as we are not from the area as we are on holiday. My husband was rather pleased with the selection of beers and I had a lovely wine. The decor and feel of the pub is lovely and we were welcomed by a lovely copper table and candle and a young bar man who was very pleasant and provided us some recommendations of where to eat in the area, he is here at college and is not local himself. If only he had told us not to eat here!! The food took over an hour to arrive, we ordered a burger (which there was nothing wrong with) and I ordered fish and chips, we ordered garlic bread for our little boy as he’s a small eater and tends to pick off our plates. Well Iv never seen a stale piece of dry bread being served like that, at the price of £3.50 (it looked like under buttered toast) and the fish was over fried and soddened in fat and the fish inside had disintegrated away. The chips are awful, certainly not the type you would expect to be served with fish and chips and they were soggy and the fat from the fish had socked down onto them. Safe to say we finished our drinks (hubby ate his burger) complained (we didn’t pay for fish or garlic bread) and left.We ended up getting Chinese from the recommended takeaway the barman had said was good earlier! It was more disappointing to spend £30 and not eat as a family and to then have to spend more and eat late. All in all a bit of a rubbish first evening of our holiday and a let down from the Mitre.

Visited here on way to the spa with my friend , for my birthday. We had the small plates- oh my word.... not much small about them.... the pies were to die for and everything about the meal was just lovely. Great staff and nice wine. See you again soon.

Upon arriving we found a nice pub and were looking forward to a nice Sunday lunch after a brisk walk! We ordered 2 Sunday lunches a sandwich and soup. The sandwich and soup were fine nothing special and once the wrong bread issue was sorted was average food. The Sunday lunches arrived... hiding underneath the Yorkshire pudding was a teaspoon of mash, 3 very tiny carrots and 2 exceptionally small pieces of broccoli. The cauliflower cheese was hard and cold and the gravy resembled dirty tap water. I looked around at was appeared to be regular locals and noticed one couple had finished their meals and still had more left than what I had started with. I complained and expressed it wasn't even big enough to count as a child portion nevermind an adults one. The memeber of staff was not concerned and said would tell the chef that was it. It's clear if you aren't a local your not welcomed or treated the same. Avoid at all costs!

Big portions of lovely pub grub. Service was slow as there was a big group in but it was worth the wait. No room for pudding! Would go again if we were in Knaresborough.

Walked into the pub at 22:50 to see the barmaid pulling points for customers satisfaction down. The barmaid said they were closed and when questioned said the customers had paid on and advised us that there was a wetherspoons up the road. I get that the customers may have been staying at the b&b;, I also get that staff want to get home, but serving us wouldn't have made any difference given that the customers the had felt pulled pints. I also get that pubs do lock ins, but if you are going to, take the hint from the title and lock the door. Thanks for recommending wetherspoons, probably did us a favour. I try to support local independent pubs, but this is the reason they are closing at the rate they are

My wife and myself along with another couple of friends have just stayed here for the third time. Last year, 2017 we couldn't get in and had to find alternative accommodation, but we came in the evening for dinner. The restaurant is so good, and they must have the best and most varied list of beers in Yorkshire. Breakfast in the morning is pure joy. Lesley is great fun with her friendly banter, and Stuart works wonders in the kitchen. I'd come back here again and again.

The Mitre is so close to Knaresborough Railway Station that you could almost wait for your train there!

Visited with the wife and dog on a Sunday evening and ordered the carver which was one of the nicest we have ever had. We returned on the Monday evening and chose of the venue and again the food was excellent. The restaurant is next to the train station and looks really nice in the evening all lit up.

Visited on a Sunday, waited for 50 min for our sandwiches - and when they arrived, they were not very pleasant. My fish butty was just a chunk of fish, cut in half, put in a toast. No garnish, no dressing. The chips were soggy, as if they were from a microwave. Not worth the money.

We had a wait in Knaresborough for our next train back to Harrogate and noticed this pub right at this station! Great time to stop for a cask ale while we waited. The funniest thing was watching people enjoying their drink or food, then running out of the pub to try to catch their train!!! Will stop for a drink the next time we are in Knaresborough.

That steak pie is a dream, nice chips too and washed down by some local real ale, how could you not love it. It's a nightmare to park on Station Rd but if you're able bodied it's not a problem.

Nice little bar and cafe with a good choice of drinks but limited food choices. Pretty sure the food is reheated from frozen - fine if you can't be bothered to cook for yourself but nothing special. Staff were friendly.

Victoria was such a gem I wasn’t too leased with my dessert and she helped me out immediately, what a kind and gentle soul.

Saw this restaurant on Tripadvisor, and was not disappointed! Food was top class , with a wide range of options. We had the two course menu Tuesday evening. All our meals were outstanding and so tasty. Service was lovely and all staff were very polite .
