Found this place by chance whilst searching the net for b&bs in Basingstoke. How lucky we were-it's a little gem. Located right next to the River Lodden, it's an old mill which has been tastefully renovated so that it has lost none of its charm. The reception/bar area is tastefully dressed and the area leading down to the restraunt gave us a big surprise as all the old works of the mill were on display. The area outside had plenty of seating alongside the river bank. The accommodation of 12 rooms are situated in a quieter area away from the main building. Our room had a huge king size bed, plenty of storage and a big walk in shower. The room was very clean and tidy and we had a good sleep. We ate in the outer bar area and the food was top notch. The description pub grub does not do it justice. We had fish and chips and it was excellently cooked with a light, crisp batter-just as we like it. Breakfast was included in the room rate and again was excellent. We had the eggs benedict. Finally, and importantly a big thank you to the staff who were polite, attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, so a big 10/10 for them. Will definitely return and recommend it for sure.

My wife and I are staying in Basingstoke for the Easter weekend,my wife decided to go here for lunch after a long dog walk…. Being such nice weather, the pub and beer garden were quite busy, but we were expecting that.. We had a drink while looking at the menu,we decided on a pizza and fish and chips (We shared) The food was very nice, freshly cooked and hit the spot. The staff are very friendly, even to our dog. If we were to return to the area,I’m sure we will definitely return. I’d definitely recommend this pub for food and drink….

Bartons Mill was booked for an anniversary dinner. To our surprise it was closed! We were directed to the bar to have a meal there...no way! We left feeling very disappointed, as it was supposed to be a special occasion. Booked through website with no indication it was closed. We will not be going back.

I went there with my friends on a Friday evening. It was not that busy although there was a party in a room upstairs - which did not impact our evening anyway. The food was really lovely, priced at what is a normal price these days (around £15 for a main, £6/£7 for a pudding). Service was good. Setting is beautiful. Staff was lovely. Plenty of space to park. I didn’t see an electric charging pod in the car park but it was dark as it was an evening meal so not sure if there is one.

We stayed here for 1 night and we had a really lovely stay. The staff were all very helpful, pleasant and professional. Our room was delightful, exceptionally clean, toiletries were lovely and the room had everything you needed. We had a lovely dinner, washed down with local ales and a nice bottle of red wine. The staff were kind enough to light the water wheel feature up to enable us to see it. Breakfast was delicious and again had everything you needed to set you up for the day. It has a lovely outside area which is very popular with walkers and the pub is dog friendly. Would definitely recommend and would love to return if we were in the area again.

My family and I came to enjoy a Sunday lunch and that we did. The menu selection was good and the specials were a added bonus. We were sat in the older part of the building by a beautiful roaring fire . Our waitress (blonde with fringe) was great and explained the specials and was very efficient. She checked we were happy with everything and brought and cleared everything very quickly . Food was delicious and we enjoyed 3 courses . Will most definitely come again and may even stay in the accommodation, as the waitress really made it sound lovely . 5 stars all round .

My partner & I visited this pub for the first time last Saturday afternoon for lunch. We had chosen it as it is a Wadworth brewery pub and was located on our way home to Surrey from Wiltshire. It was busy for the last Saturday of 2023 and we were glad we had booked online in advance. The service was polite & friendly. The food was very tasty. My partner had the wood pigeon to start and I had the tempura cod cheeks. We both had the chicken, ham & leek pies for mains, which were especially good. The location of this pub is beautiful set amongst woodland and very popular with dog walkers. We would happily return if we were in the area again. Highly recommended.

Family of 5 luncheon to Barton's Mill. Table reserved ad available as requested, and appreciate that all the procedures and processes in place to make all diners safe (as well as staff) but the process was too slow. Order via app took ages and you had to pay electronically each time (all ok unless you have elderly folks in your party who dont use a phone or pay electronically).Eventually tracked a waitress down, who took order for drinks, and they arrived eventually (but should have had a second person serving drinks behind the bar perhaps?Whilst we had the waitress attention, we ordered food, but due to the time taken and payment to be made each order, we did not order starters, just mains. The meals (Roasts) were OK, although very bland to look at, ie could have done with some greens? Still reasonably tasty though. No desserts as choice was very limited and we did not want the hassle .Appreciate everyone is doing what they can to maintain "normal" but more staff, better attention to details, customers waiting, etc would have resulted in a 4 or 5 rating.

My friend and I went for a meal yesterday and before lockdown would have raved lyrically about how great the food was, until yesterday. We ordered the fish finger sandwich and rainbow slaw. The meal arrived and the chips were stone cold, the salad was un edible, the fish fingers were more batter than fish and the rainbow slaw was like vinegar. We did mention this when we were there, and just thanked for our feedback. Maybe we just made the wrong food choices on a reduced menu. Having said all that, the service was great, the social distancing well organised, I’d go back for a drink but not for a meal.

Stopped for late afternoon meal. Place was less than a third full. We ordered using their app. Kids meal was lukewarm and the chicken spicy, not as stated on menu. The ice cream simply never arrived. We asked twice. Eventually it got too late and we went to leave. On the way out the waitress saw us saying ‘oh you wanted the ice cream’. Well yeah-we ordered it on the app and asked twice. We said it was too late and we were leaving and what would they do about it. She shrugged and said she’d cancel it but there would be no refund ‘as it’s included in the kids meal’. We asked if she was serious. She shrugged again. A bit like how often we’ll never visit in the future.

Visited here with friends who live locally, for a drink yesterday evening. It was my first visit to any pub since re-opening after lockdown, and just wanted to congratulate you on how organised you are. Hand sanitiser at entrance to garden, all tables well apart, order and pay via an app, and remove your own empties to a collection station to minimise risk to staff. Well done, and hope you continue to stay as busy as possible during these difficult times.

We booked a table for 4 before the children head back to college, asking if we could bring our dog as we had heard they were allowed. The booking was acknowledged by email, but on the day we phoned to check about the dog. No, we were told, dogs are only allowed in the bar that ‘can get very busy’. So, we went ahead on our own, leaving the dog at home. We arrived on time, and waited for our reservation to be found. Strange that, as the place was empty. Then we waited to be served drinks, again this was strange as the bar was crowded with a single solitary customer. We were given a table, for 5, helpfully positioned between the toilets and the door. The passing of people coming and going in both directions - mostly staff - kept us on our toes as we had to keep moving our chairs to let them past. I did wonder why the place was so untidy and dirty. The tables hadn’t been wiped, then they started sweeping up piles of Christmas tree needles around us, and putting away other decorations. Meanwhile the landlord (manager I suspect) started dusting the beams around us. Then the chap due to run the quiz started tuning his PA system. Just what you want when trying to chat over supper. The food was OK, but fish and chips / sausage and mash / beef burger are hardly s major culinary challenge. Also, the Wadworth’s IPA was as a I remember, and reasonably well kept. But, as a place to eat in a pleasant environment? Forget it. Go elsewhere.

It was such a shame that the food was awful, sadly it was tasteless and no thought went into the presentation. Everything that came out of the kitchen was extremely slow, there was also a really long wait for dessert. We came for afternoon drinks and while it was a lot nicer than usual (less large dogs), it still does not have a good feeling.I would also like to add that service was a little uninspiring and wasn't on the nicest side of friendly. It would be a task to find anyone who could deny that this pub is set in a sublime location and it is a very picturesque place though.I'm sure (I know) many enjoy this pub and come here often. Met 'family' here for breakfast this morning. There were 14 of us - 8 adults, 6 kids. The waitress seemed to have a good system in taking orders for so many by writing down our names, but 30 mins AFTER everyone else had (and mostly finished) their breakfasts, I was still waiting for my 'smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and toast). After asking twice at the bar about it, a full English suddenly arrived for me, which I of course sent back. A further 10 mins later, (by which time most of the family had gone to play outside) some solidified and COLD scrambled eggs and salmon turned up! The eggs weren't even slightly warm, but COLD, like it had been made with all the other orders, but left and forgotten somewhere! To make matters worse, I had also ordered an Earl Grey tea - that too, took 3 request from various staff before I eventually got it. Ordinarily I would have asked for it to be changed, but having waited so long, I didn't. I am NOT impressed. Whacking a slice of smoked salmon and a spoonful of scrambled egg on a plate is not rocket science. Oh, and I never did get my toast!!

Bartons Mill and Restaurant was very busy with a great atmosphere when we arrived for a Sunday lunchtime booking in the restaurant. The staff were very helpful in getting us seated in the restaurant upstairs - we were a bit confused as there was a function underway in the downstairs part of the restaurant, so first impressions were very good. We were attended to with menus and a drinks order very promptly, which was great as there's nothing worse than being sat at a table with nothing in front of you ! The menu was headed up Bar Food, but in my opinion the dishes on offer were restaurant standard. There was good variety, plus the option of a Sunday roast. I chose a chicken dish, off the main menu, served with roast vegetables, crushed new potatoes and a jus. It was very good indeed with plenty of added flavour from lemon and rosemary. My husband enjoyed a monkfish curry, which he was very impressed with - they were generous with the fish. We loved the building - it's centuries old and has a working mill. The service was great and the food most enjoyable.

Our family chose to have a meal at Barton’s Mill because of the mostly good reviews. Unfortunately we did not have a good experience. We waited endlessly for the waiter to take our orders. We decided to have some bread and olives whilst we were waiting for our main courses. The bread which wasn’t anything special was served but with no side plates to butter it on. We had to use either our napkins or our hands. This gave us some indicator as to what was ahead. We tried to choose simple dishes as could see the restaurant was not up to much else. There were no sausages available , no roast pork and this was at 1.30 pm on a Sunday afternoon. The dishes that were served on the whole were either microwaved or not cooked properly. We had deserts which were dry and tasteless. It was not cheap either considering the very poor standards we endured during this visit. We were not expecting fine dining but just good pub food that sadly we did not get.

Went for a family meal here today. Three of us had the cod, prawn and seafood linguine. With no prawns in my dish, 2 small prawns in my mother’s and 1 small in my sisters I wouldn’t expect to see the word prawn on the menu. The piece of cod that came was approx 3 x 4 cm and as dry and cold as it could be. The pasta was completely undercooked and hard and the sauce was a tin of chopped tomatoes. The whole dish was cold. My wife had the pea dal which was undercooked lentils in one dish, and peas and a tin of chopped tomatoes in the other with a microwaved soggy bit of pitta. All deserts where microwaved and tasteless.Hopefully this gives an idea to the standard you can expect. Save your money!

Staff are friendly and welcoming and offer a wide range of beverages. The food is ok, at times seems a bit expensive for what you get. A very chilled and welcoming atmosphere all year around, situated in Old Basing, there is small children’s park and field next to the pub itself as well as a short walk along the river to Old Basing house.

A group of 5 of s visited midweek lunchtime. The menu was a mixed bag, but we all found something we wanted. The mixed seafood starter platter was pretty poor, it was supposed to include salt and pepper squid, but actually included just battered squid rings - look at the picture - that was disappointing in itself but the squid hadn't been prepared properly it was like bits of quill left which had to be pulled out and left on the plate. The smoked salmon was warm and I think most would prefer it to be cold, the prawns and the goujons were ok. Separately from that I tried a couple of chips that were crisp and fluffy and looked perfect but tasted of nothing at all, a little seasoning would have helped. On the plus side the steak pie was very good with some nice mash and veg.The venue is really lovely with the river running through it and the staff and service were great. Shame that some of the food was quite poor.

Not to far from the town centre this lovely pub sits on the edge of a river with some lovely outside seating.Had some really lovely real ales on tap and I went with a lovely ale stored in rum infused barrels. This gave it a lovely kick in the taste.Lunch consisted of a tuna baguette and what I can only describe as some of the best chips I have ever tasted! So crispy on the outside but extremely fluffy and light on the inside. Only downside is it could do with a bigger carpark as it is obviously very popular at lunchtimes.

Had a good meal last weekend. Booked a table and the manager was very helpful responding quickly to my request as we couldn’t book in the restaurant due to a wedding reception being held there. Only one small complaint was that we weren’t told that certain items were not available on the menu before choosing.

Barton's Mill is one of three pubs in the village. It backs onto Mill Field, so is perfect for dog walkers and other walkers too. That means that there are a lot of dogs there, and quite a few of them are considerably big. Also, the pub is always quite crowded too, so of you are looking for a quiet drink, it might not be the perfect location.Solid and consistent service however.

Lovely accommodation separate from the pub. Big comfy bed large en suite shower room. Tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water. Thick duvet a bit warm for this time of year but fan provided. Breakfast okay with good choice of hot food. Only downside was walking to it in the rain! Rail line is close so some train noise. Plenty of parking.

Enjoyed a lovely meal in the evening with two business colleagues. The beers are good, and we enjoyed a pre-meal drink outside in the fresh air and sunshine accompanied by ducks. The setting really is beautiful. We enjoyed an excellent fish sharing platter for starters and I enjoyed a lamb chop with mash; veg and gravy. Service was top drawer. It’s a classic rustic pub restaurant with that subtle peaty; smoky scent wafting through. There’s not many pub-restaurants like this in Basingstoke...Fully recommended!

We ate here as the summer pub lunch for a club my partner belongs to. It was a nice day so some sat outside and others inside. Food had to be ordered at the bar so there was a bit of a crush, and at first we were told food would be 45 minutes wait. However this proved to not be the case and it was not long before we all had our food. I think we all agreed the food was very good and we certainly all had an enjoyable lunch.

Great pub that sits next to the canal. Really nice grounds and plenty of parking...but it does get busy! Food and beer selection is great and staff welcoming. Dig friendly judging by number with their owners. Try it out.

I have been several times to Barton's Mill when I meet a friend for lunch, as it is half way for both of us. We are certainly not going there again after today's experience. The staff were utterly inept and devoid of anything that even got close to the definition of customer service. They did not want to serve you, they missed people that were queuing at the bar on purpose. People walked out. I do not bother with reviews unless the service is superlative or appalling. This one is on the appalling side. The food was not that good either. Not going here again for sure.

We have not visited Bartons Mill for a very long time but while out walking decided to call in for drinks.I ordered two 1/2 pints of lime and lemonade and was charged £3-10 paying with a £10-00 note and the barmaid handed me the change, however I did not check what she had placed in my hand as I was concentrating so much on the cold drinks. When I checked the money she had placed in my hand I was £5-00 short, you can argue it's totally my own fault but a barmaid should be capable of giving the right change. The location of Bartons Mill is quite lovely with plenty of seating in the garden area and my experience was only marred by being short changed£5-00.The moral of the story is always check your change before moving away from the bar and not later on .

I was not overwhelmed by the service here but the food was great and sitting by the river when eating was lovely. It has some great outside seating, inside has low beams so mind your head, the beer choice is average, and its very expensive I felt.Nice few hours though so give it a go!

We stayed here in one of the beautifully decorated rooms with our puppy Martha. Our bed was large and very comfortable, the room was clean and immaculate, with thoughtful touches (remote lighting, heating etc.) The bathroom was pristine, the extras such as toiletries, tea, coffee, biscuits were all good quality. We ate in the public bar as we had our dog with us. The staff were warm and friendly, service impeccable. Although the menu and food are not fine dining standard, we did not expect it in a bar anyway. What we got was good quality served piping hot and freshly cooked-no complaints from us. Some comments say it is expensive for pub food, I suggest that for its location, atmosphere and service it is value for money. The following morning we had breakfast (included in the price), great cooked choices and plentiful array of cereals, juices, yoghurt and fresh fruit. It was delicious, and even a sausage for Martha!I was pleasantly surprised when we checked out, a lovely evening meal with drinks, superb nights sleep, wonderful breakfast, pretty countryside and waterside beer garden, helpful friendly staff, dogs welcome and all for £120.I intend to return in the future, it’s a bargain and highly recommended.

We arrived at this place and was pleasantly surprised by the nice surroundings. We had a table booked for Sunday lunch and this was in the bar area. The bar area was extremely dark and not a nice environment to eat. We asked to change to a different table and was informed that the restaurant may be free! We wasn’t even aware there was a restaurant and why would they seat us in the bar area for a Sunday lunch. Once we entered the most beautiful little bar area it felt very welcoming. There was hardly anyone in this area which surprised us. The food was a very good portion and was extremely nice. We will be back and will definitely request the restaurant side.

We had two rooms for the night as we booked tickets at local theatre to see Bill Bailey. The rooms are excellent ..very clean, good size , cannot fault at all. We had dinner at the pub (Roast Beef) ..it was very tough meat..not at all good. The breakfast was ok..could be much nicer. Very busy place on a Sunday..so waiting time to order food..queing up in the pub took time. No check in as such for the rooms..so again having to queue at the bar for keys to the room

Great little pub with a set of re conditioned rooms in a converted stable block, very clean, modern and comfortable. The pub has a good selection of beers and a good pub menu. In the summer most people sit outside and enjoy the gardens and River however there is a larger restaurant inside which shows of the old Mill workings. Staff are very friendly.

We stayed here as part of 2 couples, the accommodation is fantastic, very comfortable and all done to a very high standard and spotlessly clean. The only downside for our room was a small fan noise that could only be heard at night as we were next to what appeared to be a plant room (only slight noise).

Busy restaurant with lots of dogs. Food was good but felt that the menu was quite limiting as we don't eat prawns or pork/ham/bacon/pancetta etc. Opted for fish and chips which was good. Service was okay. Mains seemed a bit on the pricey side for a pub. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great so we couldn't take advantage of the lovely surroundings, it must be lovely on a sunny day.

Booked a table for lunch to catch up with friends , ordered a drink then the main meal, while we were still eating a sign was put on our table with the name and time for the next sitting giving us 15 minutes to finish no time to have dessert so just ordered a coffee the sign was changed adding a further 30 minutes , nothing was said by the staff member thought this was very rude. When we got the bill it had the drinks on for the next sitting. There was a big function on in the restaurant but when we booked we weren't told we would only have an hour for a Sunday lunch. Have been here before but this time very disappointed.

We had a private party in the downstairs restaurant for 30 people and everything ran like clockwork! The staff were really helpful and were really accommodating - even when one of the guests decided to change their mind with the meal choice. Mano was excellent and nothing was too much trouble with the arrangements. The food was excellent with no complaints. I would certainly recommend Barton’s Mill for a private party.

The hotel work booked was full and this was the second option. For me location was good. Rooms nice, large, lots of good coffee, tea, biscuits etc. toiletries good quality and I liked how they have been done thought has gone into the simplicity and feel. Nice. And above all it was comfortable and clean which is more important than anything else. I will make sure this is first choice next time. Parking and WiFi good. Good choice hand pulled bitters. Breakfast was as expected, choice was good as well. We enjoyed the evening meal off the specials. Nothing to complain about. Nice chat with the staff as well. And the place had a nice atmosphere with some character. Price of bitter and stout 4.15/4.25 so what I expected really. No surprise.

We came for Sunday lunch, ordering five roast beef and one roast pork. There was quite a long wait for the meals. The food was distinctly average; the beef was fairly well done (I prefer a bit of pink), the Yorkshire pudding was very large but overcooked and crunchy, the potatoes average and the veg were hardly exciting - carrots, peas and cabbage. We ordered three puddings, one of which was the gluten free sticky toffee pudding. When the puddings eventually came, the two sticky toffee puddings looked identical. We asked which was the gluten free one and the waitress said she would have to go back to the kitchen to find out. She reappeared with one pudding and said they had served two ordinary sticky toffee puddings. This was very poor, especially as I had seen the waiter write GF on the pad.

Myself and a friend went here for lunch today. It is very pretty and I imagine fantastic for a drink in the summer. The chap behind the bar was very friendly and welcoming however the foreign lady was rather curt and unwelcoming. We ordered 2 x bacon, Brie and cranberry sandwiches, 2 x chips, 1 of these to be a gluten free meal as my friend is coeliac. We waited for rather a long time and eventually my sandwich appeared with a very small handful of chips on the side of the plate. My friends gluten free sandwich was apparently coming soon! My chips were overlooked and cold, my sandwich consisted of cold bacon with a drizzle of melted Brie across one half. I took it back to the bar staff and explained and they took it away to sort. In this time my friends turned up with an equally small handful of chips. The problem with gluten free bread is it resembles stale cardboard unless it is heated or toasted which sadly this was not. My meal reappeared with a little more melted Brie, Luke warm bacon and an even smaller amount of chips on the plate. We ordered a dessert each which was again brought out separately so by the time my friend got hers the ice cream had melted. The price was just short of £40 which included 3 soft drinks so I didn't think this was actually to bad for a 2 course light lunch however I did feel £7.50 for the pretty unsatisfactory sandwiches plus £2 each on top for the sad handful of chips was rather extortionate for what we had actually had. My friend I dined with is a landlady of a pub herself and I was a chef for many years. Lovely pub and setting but the food and service is just not up to scratch sadly.

The staff was absolutely so rude to me today as for the first time I was asked for ID for a coffee I am over the age of 16. Coffee isn't a energy drink or alcohol. Made me wait 10 minutes and gave me such rude attitude all because of this silly rule.I am clearly a tall 16+ year old. I felt very unwelcome by the staff. Never coming here again I'm going to a different one as they would give it to me no issue and they are so much more welcoming. There was so many flies in there it felt not clean. Gave me decaf instead of regular coffee.Im going to another Costa. Disgusting.
