Hubby and I visited mid feb, what a lovely place Mill House is. Very oldy worldly no marble or concrete here, we had the valentines meal on the Friday and what an amazing meal we had all 3 courses, there was a singer in the bar so we had a lovely evening. Our room was clean, comfortable and warm, bathroom had all the soaps / shampoo etc that were needed, all the staff were friendly and helpful, the owners Jo and Stu were lovely and explained that the hotel was a fairly new venture and was a work in progress as a few of the public areas need a bit of TLC, we loved it and yes we will go back 😊

Spent two nights down at this beautiful old and quirky Millhouse and we had a fabulous time, from the time we walked in to have a few ciders in the bar before booking in, to the morning we left, very old worldly, if you want straight walls level floors, even ceilings, it’s not the place for you, we had the Valentine’s meal on the first night, which was absolutely beautiful, the trio of lamb was excellent, breakfast on the two mornings were excellent. first morning I had a full Cornish, second morning I had salmon and scrambled egg and when I say smoked salmon and eggs I think it was half a salmon and a dozen scrambled eggs, Room was brilliant, comfortable and warm bed, immaculately clean, modern bathroom with everything you need, shower was great, the owners were excellent as were the staff, friendly, helpful and chatty, would we return, absolutely?

Looking at reviews on booking com, 3* is about right. First, you need independent travel arrangements as busses and trains won't serve this place or area. What they got right was a clean, comfortable warm (as we went in January) and spacious room. The building looks ancient, old worldy fitting in with what ever it means to be Cornwall in age - loved it. We had bath as opposed to shower, bathroom was massive offering plenty of space and light. Complimentary tea coffee and bottled water replenished ever day. The location is somewhat isolated, plenty of parking set amongst beautiful natural surroundings including a brook. Food gorgeous and delicious what was served to us. Breakfast and evening meals, especially Thursday steak night. Nice to see locals using the establishment. What we think they could improve was WiFi dropping out regularly or just not working in room 1. All times of the day. When we approached staff, there appeared to be little empathy or anything they could do as they talked about how WiFi works on their device. We were left exposed. But no biggy as WiFi isn't essential to us, but it left some communication difficulties unless you were in communal areas. Also, we were one of the last guests to use the rooms (we were reminded of this more than three times!) some of the menu was restricted. We are 2 out of 3 nights (to lend support to local businesses) so for instance: the dessert choices on our last night was ice cream or cheese! On breakfast we were offered anything cold, but the day before it had all been placed out to help yourself. No yoghurt because there hadn't been a delivery, no real empathy given just that's the way it is. I think we were victims of the winding down season, but if we had been informed beforehand, we would have made different plans. We did on our last day by withholding breakfast, it was convenient as we had lunch appointment at home... So we can't really give it much more than a 3* rating even though staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Not a place to stay for disabled or hard of walking, too many stairs to navigate....but if just for drinks/meals, then I thoroughly recommend...

Brilliant food and great service, one vegetarian and one meat eater. At last a vegetarian roast that doesn't disappoint, it was all really well cooked, each item cooked spot on, loved the mustard and seeds in the the cauliflower cheese. Generous portions, Monday lunch at work sorted. This is now "our" place to go on a Sunday. We have tried 6 others locally nothing comes near. Carefully cooked food with excellent service.

We visited The Mill House for a special dinner and we were very disappointed. The service was totally shocking, staff got the order wrong with little concern for their error, the wait time was terrible and all the residents who came in after us were all served in front. The final straw was when we’d waited at least 20 minutes after finishing our main course. The staff (3 of them) were neither attentive or cared and carried on talking to residents and clearing other tables. My husband’s burger was burned and no one asked us if our meal was ok. In the end we left the food. After 2 courses we got up and went to ask if we could pay the bill. At that point I told them I was disappointed and the waitress said “I didn’t notice them”. This is a small restaurant and therefore I think that this business is complacent, not caring, very poor customer service and I would definitely not recommend it ever. Still raging about it hence this review!

Great place for a wedding. Just spent 2 days here with family for a wedding. Enjoyed the whole thing immensely fantastic setting great food friendly staff. The owner worked hard to make sure the whole thing was a success. Inly one small criticism for the benifit of the owner rooms could do with a refit but they do have character. I would highly recommend for a planned event or wedding or for just a trip out for an evening meal you would be hard pressed to find better in the area. Thank you to all involved Russ.

Very sad to write this review. We should have been prepared when we found bar and restaurant empty on arrival, but we were hungry and reviews looked very promising. Tables were already laid up but as we sat down the waitress went and we realised the table hadn't been cleaned. Waitress returned and cleaned it for us and left, By now we realised that it was really filthy deep down. I actually run my nail across and could see how ingrained the dirt was. Day boat fish was plaice but only one left, OH asked for it. 15 minutes later waitress approached and said chef had cooked it but the realised it hadn't been gutted before cooking, would he have the cod instead. Agreed, but by now we were really concerned about the state of the tables and a chef who didn't have the experience of knowing how to prepare and cook a plaice. We tried to find a member of staff and by now others were waiting to be served at the bar too. We were really concerned that we would be wasting money so we decided to pay for the one beer and leave. We managed to find a staff member and did so. We felt bad for the staff trying to do their job , however someone isn't looking at standards, lack of basic hygiene and training. I have absolutely no idea how the Mill house has so many 4+ reviews. If you read my other reviews at other venues you will see that this type of review is very rare from me.

Our visit left a bad taste in my mouth, and not just literally. It was supposed to be a special evening out to celebrate my husbands birthday. He treated himself to the Surf and Turf, and at £32, we were thinking it would be a thing of beauty. The steak was ok, cooked as requested, but he only got 2 prawns and 1 scallop cut in half!! The menu clearly states scallops, suggesting more than one… I got the chargrilled aubergine bake. It was horrible mess, slices of aubergine covered in a sickly sauce, soggy and definitely not chargrilled. It wasn’t a bake and the crumb was non existent. I couldn’t eat it. In fairness, they removed it from our bill, but I was left with no food. There was no vegetarian option on the children’s menu, I asked if there was anything for my son and was told if it’s not in the menu, then no. Eventually the waitress asked the chef and they agreed he could have a vege burger. It was pub food charged at restaurant prices. Also, the place felt grubby, my chair cushion was filthy and we could hardly get our legs under the table. We left feeling really disappointed and a lot poorer!

We called in for a drink after a day on the beach at Trebarwith Strand and as it seemed a nice place we booked our final evening there for the steak night (£15 with all the trimmings) this seemed reasonable compared to the outrageous prices we had experienced everywhere else. We were greeted by a lovely girl who showed us to our table, we had our dog with us as well, a plus point on holiday. Our meals were served in reasonable time and they were excellent, another girl helped with the service and they were both really attentive and helpful especially as they had a huge party to deal with as well. We all said at the end we had really enjoyed it and that to me is very important at todays prices, well done, we would thoroughly recommend

Following our lunch and review of the 30 September we are back again and staying in The Cottage. Booked in for dinner for both of our evenings whilst staying here. Why go further? See separate review for accommodation. Very good to excellent food. A surprisingly extensive and quality wine list for a pub but it transpires the owner Mark also has a wine supply business. Three local real ales on pump. Usual kegs. Very good traditional breakfasts including kippers which you don't often see. Alastair Sawday and Good Pub Guide entries. Most pleasant and engaging team. Two dining rooms but we found the one adjoining the bar far more atmospheric and with a great ambience. Doggy friendly throughout. Not that we have a dog but great to see and all part of the British pub scene. Beautiful area.

I do like an water old mill. Water mills are one of those brilliant pre-industrial buildings where the building design itself is an integral part of the process of manufacturing whatever it is that’s being manufactured. Treknow Mill dates from the 1760s and spent the best part of 160 years doing milling stuff before becoming a private home for a few years. In 1945 it morphed into a guest house and, by the 1960s, it had done the full butterfly and become a hotel/pub. It’s been doing it’s hospitality thing in this beautiful wooded valley with the stream hurtling down towards Trebarwith Strand ever since. It’s fair to say that the imaginatively named Mill House doesn’t look a while bunch like an old water mill these days. There are numerous additions that have cropped up over the last 250-odd years, but it’s still an attractive venue. We came here for dinner on the last night of a recent holiday. Despite all the covid-related zombie apocalypse precautions the staff were great; friendly, welcoming and efficient. The dining room spacious but not free from atmosphere. We’d been told to expect fine dining rather than pub grub and I was a little wary of this. Many pub restaurants sacrifice the quality of cooking and flavour in favour of fussing artistically with plating food on enormous, oddly shaped, plates and smearing some kind of “jus” or (God forbid) “foam” about the place. Thankfully, the Mill House don’t do this. The food is nicely presented, but more importantly, it tastes great. At £128 for 2 courses and 2 rounds of drinks for 4 people it’s not cheap but it’s certainly not over priced. We had a completely enjoyable evening and that, after all, is the point. We came to Trebarwith Strand once before many years ago and we didn’t eat here. I wish we had. Enough said.

The room. it was a family room, room number 9. It looks like a deposit for old rubbish (dirty mattresses, one in a wardrobe, another under the double bed, a black sack in another wardrobe). There are too many stuff in one of the room: you can't open the drawers of the chests of drawers because they are blocked with an old armchair and you can't move the armchair because there is no room. So I had to keep all of my stuff in the suitcases because there was no appropriate, clean storage space. The window in the bathroom is broken and you can't open it. One bathroom, four people and you can't open the window....And the flush of the toilet is powerless. The bathroom is truly dated with a ridiculous small sink and mirror. Walls are dirty, full of marks and prints of any sort. I don't know the other rooms so I am only speaking for room number 9, the family room. Bar, restaurant and staff are lovely tought, so no complain at all. I appreciate they didn't charge my 2 years old girl, but still I think you must update the accommodation to a decent standard.

Many thanks, Max and Shirley.

We booked a night away before going onto visit our daughter in Truro, and decided to treat ourselves so 4 star queen room with views sounded ideal. However, when we arrived we were shown to the Mill Cottage which at first seemed great until we realised there were some serious issues. The upstairs of the cottage is fine, although a microwave and then no cutlery or crockery makes no sense, but the down stairs bedroom is shocking. When we went downstairs it felt icy cold and damp and the decoration is appalling-far from 4 star. There were signs of mould around all the windows and in the bathroom, and the bathroom floor and skirting boards were dirty. There was no loo roll. When we got into the bed it was cold and damp.

This is quite an expensive pub but all the food was good. The ploughman’s were enormous! Out of the way location so a good bet if you find Tintagel too crowded for comfort.

My wife and I called in for lunch at The Mill House. The pub/hotel is tucked away in an idyllic spot. Although the building is obviously old, it is as clean and fresh as you could expect from such an old building. Bar staff (owner?) was very friendly and helpful. We both elected to have their beef burger, chips and salad. Neither of us have ever experienced a beefburger so tasty and fresh. The owner said they are home made using local Cornish beef. I would have loved to have their recipe!

Cottage in lovely setting, but, the kitchen that had a microwave , sink and fridge had no crockery and no knives. Explanation, " we don't rent it as self catering " ??? Bedroom stairs filthy at edges and riser, bedroom smelt damp, chest of drawers marked and stained drawers smelt, wardrobe door broken, fire door locked from outside, considering bedroom in basement very worrying if fir broke out upstairs in kitchen living room area. Owner did not believe us so showed reception person who said she didn't smell anything as she was used to old buildings ? ........ We left and would rather have slept in the car.......

Myself and my girlfriend came here with another couple friend of ours after booking a local AirBnb. Having no idea of the area we just dipped our toe with the local pub, but we stumbled on a gem. We had maybe the best Sunday roast (beef was amazing) and came back for the Monday night curry which again did not disappoint. Shame we are only here for 2x nights otherwise we would be back for more.

Over a number of recent years our family have shared many lunches at weekends at the Mill House. Without exception we have enjoyed lovely food, a friendly service and good value in this lovely authentic Cornish setting. The smaller restaurant area adjacent to the bar is our favourite place to eat, however on busier days there is a further separate comfortable restaurant area with lots of light which is very pleasant also.

This is the first poor review i have given on Trip Advisor. I really hate to give a bad review but feel i have to. We had the Pauper's Supper, which was recommended by other reviewers on this site. I ordered the Chef's Lamb Curry for main. This is possibly the worst meal i have ever had - gristle in a chip shop curry sauce. I do not think there was one piece of edible lamb in the entire dish. I did complain, which is very unusual for me. The waitress wasn't interested in offering an apology, or more.

Apparently Wed night is 'Paupers Night' at the Mill, with a bargain 3 courser for £17.50 on offer. Absolutely stunning value with bags of choice . Reasonably priced wine and good selection of Tintagel ales. Great night out.

Stopped by for lunch. All food was ok except for my daughters squid bites and chips. It was all very oily and the squid rings themselves tasted like they were just bought in frozen squid rings. In an area with such good seafood it seemed a real shame that the seafood was so poor. Fresh is always best

I am only able to give this 1 out of 5 as we didn’t even get to order a Sunday Lunch! We stumbled on this place quite by accident during our holiday and planned to go for a Sunday Lunch. After checking their website we found it a little confusing on times of service. However the section stating ‘Sunday Lunch Menu’ quite clearly states service until 3:00pm. So we headed off on our 45min journey and arrived at 2:25 only to be told they had stopped serving. I pointed out the website times and was just given blank looks from the bar staff! They rung the chef and he confirmed that service had closed.

My husband and I ate here recently. It looked much better on the website than in reality: dining room is “rustic” and not the cleanest - needs some TLC. Loud music coming from the bar area was off putting. The food was ok, though my husband had fish and chips; the batter was soggy and fish look as if it could have come from a frozen packet - given that this is situated in a coastal county it was very disappointing. The waitress (who added ‘no worries’ to every sentence grrrrr!) said she would pass on our comments to the chef.

I have to admit that I am not the person that comments on anything and everything, nor do I ever right a review of my experience. If I am unsatisfied with the experience, I just won't return again. But ... I have been seeing the Development of this establishment for that past 20 years and treated myself quite often to a night or two in any of the corner or best suites ( highly recommend those ) and enjoyed the ambiance and service this hotel had to offer. Our experience: Arrival to the hotel : We planned to have drinks prior to our meal. Found the bar area as busy as usual. With no free seats in sight, I ask the Brasserie manager if we could order drinks in the main lounge, whereas we been told that there normally is service but he has no clue what they doing today. Not answer I was hoping for. The entrance to the main lounge also been blocked off for some reason. Luckily the wait at bar was sufficient enough to pass the time for a table to become vacant. In previous visits, a relaxed table service was offered but not this time for some reason . Guess it’s an informal 5 star service.. , had to ask for bar menus as neither been on the bar or tables to see what’s on offer. ( also no usual complimentary nuts that used to be offered ) Restaurant We arrived early to our Booking at the samphire and were delighted to be able to be seated, unfortunately without any menus. It took about 10-15 min of us staring holes into the warm air, when I lost my patients and had to get up from the table to ask for menus at the entrance of the Restaurant. Yet again it took quite a while for us to order drinks and food as it seemed to be a chaotic service with everyone doing everything and no restaurant Manager nor head waiter in sight ( please note.. all evening ) . The lack of attention to detail was incredible .. table settings with knives to left and forks to right on every table .. just wow - giggle Food and drinks order done. ( ordered a glass of white wine with my mains, which never arrived ).. Drinks arrived what seamed ages. Overheard table next to us complaining about the slow service too, which been given a small apology but no solution to increase the speed of service ( yet again a lack of management ) Noticed the young waiter being unfamiliar on how to correctly present a bottle of wine and opening it, which I thought should be a training standard for a 5 star establishment. not only did he seem untrained, he also dried his hands in a used napkin left on the table next to him where diners just left. The pork belly starter , was below luke warm which was shame as its been rather tasty. I guess if a portion of this size is sitting on a kitchen pass for mere 3 min, it naturally will loose its core temperature, suggestion.. Next time use a cloche! I wanted to point this out to the service but yet again no manager or headwaiter to be seen and the waiters seem too busy to be bothered. Once they did ask if everything is alright, but by that time we finished what we had on the plate ( which is not a lot if you are hungry ) Unfortunately the main course of the hen and the monk fish not been any better and yet again being luke warm. Dessert of the frangipane tart and pineapple been ok, but yet again no attention to detail, as the dessert been bought out without cutlery being replenished prior. Ordered coffee to be served in the lounge, which arrived with no sugar or spoon and had to be asked for separately. When I paid my bill, I mentioned that the wine I ordered with my main course never arrived. No apology was offered.. A "informal fine Dining " experience. 95% informal - 5 % fine Dining. :-( Over the past 20 years I always chose the Headland hotel for its perfection, attention to detail and impeccable service, this time it's not delivered to its promise which is a shame cause that's what I will remember.. Coming from a 4 to a 5 star .. I expected more ( go back to 4 stars !!! You been better then
