It was so bad. Like the "before" half of Ramseys Kitchen Nightmares. 1 hour 15 mins from arrival to getting anything to eat in an almost empty restaurant. The food when it arrived was cold and tasted terrible.

We came here for Sunday lunch last weekend. It was for my birthday. We booked a table in advance as I thought it would be busy. It was. The pub is beautiful and in a lovely setting. The car park was rammed. We ordered roast lamb and roast pork. It took a long time for the food to come, and once it did, it was luke warm. We also ordered a side of cauliflower cheese. That was also on the cold side and was not amazing. Our roasts were tasty. The lamb was a generous portion. The pork, not so much. I ordered the Baileys tiramisu for pudding. It was very nice. The service was friendly and welcoming. The prices were on the high side, I thought.

We've been to the Mill a few times, but not for a few years. It is in a lovely location, and the working mill and the river adjacent to it, adds so much. We experienced a great customer service - they were attentive and friendly for our party of 7 for dinner. The food was delicious and the portion size was more than reasonable. The wait time for our food was very quick. Definitely recommend this place, and we will be back very soon.

A disappointing experience. Went for family Saturday night dinner and, despite having booked and the bar not being busy, were sat at the furthest reaches of the bar area right by the toilets which had a definite odour of cleaning products. Zero atmosphere made worse by the clash of tinny music on the speaker above the table and the thump of a base beat from the wedding party upstairs (nb this was early evening). We mentioned this to the waiter who recognised the problem but there was really nothing he could do. Food was average at best and over-priced. £19.95 for chips and prawns… Surely some salad could have been added to make it a bit more interesting? Very little in the way of vegetarian options and those that were there were plant based too. Personally I don’t want vegan feta or non-cream cream in my pasta. Such a shame as the setting and building are lovely.

The food was essentially good but let down by some details. Fish, peas and chips were very hot but prawns were just tepid. The butter pat for the mackerel pate was frozen solid, and the fish and chips were served on a piece of fake newspaper on top of the plate (why?) which disintegrated as the food was cut. Service was very slow but there is an event tonight which seems to have taken the staff planner by surprise. And there was a big string of flashing fairy lights which was distracting and annoying to us but would have been disastrous for any epileptics in. The puddings we had were very nice (sticky toffee pudding and lemon posset) but no one wanted “plant based” cream and meringue on the Eton mess. Otherwise, lovely venue,

What a real shame!!! This place is so idyllic, historic and in a superb location. The only real positive apart from the location was the staff who were just wonderful and very efficient especially Jamie-Lee. The negatives for us and there were a couple are as follows:- 1. The price of drinks is extortionate!! When we arrived we asked for a bottle of the "house white". Usually the house white is the cheapest bottle of wine on offer and is usually quite nice. The bottle of Picpoul Chemin Wine was lovely but we never new how much it cost until we got our bill at the end £33:00!!!!!!!!!! which is a total rip off for a house wine. Majestic sell the very same bottle for £9:99 per bottle. When we saw the bill we even clarified the house wine and the price and were told that the house bottle and price was unfortunately correct. A pint of Peroni will set you back £7:10. A pint of Asahi lager is £7:25. 2. None of the four of us had a starter and went straight for a main. Two people had the Fish & Chips with peas at £16:50 each. One had the Steak and Mushroom Pie with mash & veg at £17:50. Our son had the Grilled Prawns at £19:95. All four meals were lovely but when asked by staff if we would like any sauces etc it was found that Mustard which was all we actually asked for was nowhere to be found. For dessert two of us had the Summer Eton Mess at £8:50 each. They were terrible!! and that is no joke. I have never had such a poor quality Eton Mess as it was basically a liquified yogurt with a finger of meringue sticking out of it. At the bottom we found just a few pieces of fruit. To be quite honest the main meals were good so that is a positive but the pie and mash was a very minimalistic meal, with the pie balanced on the top of the mash and a little veg. Our son had a Chocolate Brownie for his dessert and that was lovely he said. Our total bill without a tip was £154:55 which I found very expensive. We literally had no starters, four mains, three desserts, one bottle of wine and three beers. Having said that I did tip the young lady who served us as it was not her fault things for us were not good. Overall I would find it impossible to recommend this place to others and would personally go somewhere else.!!!!!!😒

We were a group of friends and had booked a table for an evening meal. The setting is lovely, the mill, next to the river, a delightful setting and the building looked great. It was then downhill after that. The menu had a really limited and unispiring selection. Portion size was very small which would have been fine if it arrived hot. It was at best tepid or cold. The fish dish with potatoes was not enjoyable as it had congealed with the cold. The salad was very poor, the chips failed to arrive. The starters were so overpriced - a small piece of french bread with a little topping - bruschetta, was £8 odd. We asked for a wine list but it never came. We had to chase down someone working there to get the list so we could at least get a glass of wine. Despite it being nearly empty the service whilst friendly when you saw anyone was really slow and poor. Considering the high price charged it is such a shame as the location is really special. Avoid until the management sort the kitchen out, train the staff and review their pricing policy.

This is a nice spot great location, lovely garden etc but the food is shockingly bad.. tiny portions lack of any enthusiasm to make it look like you want to eat it ... I had a burger and it was cold, tiny portion of chips in a cup it looked lost on the plate,! no garnish there was a thimble full of coleslaw that looked like it had been out all day .... will go there to drink but to be honest overpriced and not enjoyable such a shame !

We have had excellent times there before but the food today was a disappointment. It is a shame as it's a lovely pub with friendly staff. One meal was far too spicy with no warning, one pretty tasteless, and one alright but nothing to write home about. Despite having booked a table we waited almost an hour for the main course. I've given it average because the waiting staff were really trying and the situation is so good, but the kitchen needs sorting. I'd go back if that happens.

I blame myself. I've been before and had a poor experience but I just had to try one more time. Silly me. We were kept waiting at a busy bar for eight minutes before we could announce our arrival and be shown to a table. My Mother 91 ordered squash tagine with harissa and I ordered smoked sausage ragu on papardelle. My Mother took one mouthful of the tagine and went bright red; "It's.... so hot". Bless her, I thought. "It's supposed to be spicy" I said, "It has harissa in it." I tried a fork full....... It was hot. So hot it cauterised your mouth to the point of numbness. We swapped plates. I picked out the edible bits and Mommy dearest woefully struggled with the ragu on a bed a bland.... Very bland papardelle. So lesson learned and my advice is stick to the chips, they can't mess that up......... Can they??

Just had a trip to the mill for a Sunday roast. Never do these reviews but the trip warrants one. We booked as they have the kids table and we thought our son would like it. Ridiculously, it is up a steep flight of stairs away from all the main tables. We have a younger child in a buggy and there is no lift so this obviously hasn’t been thought through at all. The girls working on the table were great. We were put in a very dark corner initially and I asked to be moved. This seemed to take 3 people sort out. We ordered our food and drinks. Lemonade turned up as soda so needed to be changed. Our food then turned up and it was cold - my husband ate his as he was really hungry (he should have sent his back as well!) but I couldn’t. All the sides we ordered were stone cold as well - including cauliflower cheese! I told the waiter and said it was cold. It then arrived back and had literally been put under the grill - but obviously hadn’t heated anything up significantly at all. I’m not sure that is food standards safe!! I told the waiter again and he said ‘that’s how we sort it here, and there isn’t anything else we can do!’ Absolutely appalling service! I asked to speak to the manager who said she would get me a new meal as she didn’t want me going hungry! It came within 5 minutes- the meat was hot and every thing else was luke warm at best. And half the chicken was the literal carcass! At this point I was worried I might get food poisoning! There was no apology and when my husband paid she said ‘sorry you didn’t enjoy your food’ I didn’t get a chance to eat the food as it was cold! She took my meal off the bill - but no offer of a free drink etc. we were made to feel like we were making a fuss and should just eat it and be quiet! There was obviously some kind of issue with The kitchen but the front of house staff were so lack lustre and completely incompetent we obviously won’t be returning. I would avoid at all costs to be honest.

We generally like this place and have had occasional meals here over the years. The food has generally been decent, if fairly standard pub grub. So I popped in for an impromptu midweek lunch with my children during their school hols. Sat in the garden. Pleasant service when ordering at the bar, although the drinks tray I was given had an unpleasant congealed lump of something unidentifiable on it that had evidently been left uncleaned for quite a while, as it was glued solidly onto the tray. Ordered burgers - steep price at £14.50. Deeply disappointed with what was served. A low-grade cheap supermarket-standard bun, tasteless and rather greasy burger, tiny bit of limp lettuce, thin half slice of anaemic-looking tomato, with a sauce that was - hands down - the most ghastly burger sauce I’ve ever tasted, just completely overloaded with tarragon, of all things.

Came in for lunch on the 15th June expecting a nice lunch date. Due to traffic we were running late attempted to phone and inform them that we were going to be late to have the phone hung up on me whilst talking. Not welcoming at all when we arrived, forced to sanitise hands upon on entry before even greeting. Taken to the table told how to exit straight away before being seated then told we had to order online instead of being served by a waiter even though every other table had menus and were being served by a waiter/waitress. After ordering food a woman with short blonde hair and a blue vest proceeded to slam the cutlery on the table without a word. Food was good service was way below par on my one day off when I was expecting a nice meal.

Bank Holiday lunch should have been a pleasant experience, with our small family group getting together to eat out of doors for the first time in many months, I had been looking forward to it.The weather was not great and the marquee roof was flapping over our heads noisily, people were sitting at tables but there was a lot of getting up and moving around, especially some of the bored children. We did not feel safe. One of my group ordered apple juice as she’s pregnant, and was brought a pint of cider, which was changed when we pointed it out.Over many visits to the Mill spanning 15 years I’ve always enjoyed the food. On this occasion two of the group ordered lamb, and were brought portions so mean they should have been on the starters menu. With the lamb was one smallish potato cut into pieces. Poor value for £15.As this was a double birthday get-together and we were not enjoying sitting under the flapping tent with people wandering up and down we ate up and left, to get some cake elsewhere as we were hungry. My complaint and comments were met with a bland answer about portion sizes having been improved. There are a number of pubs in the area which offer a much better experience, a shame because I’ve liked The Mill, but I don’t want to repeat the dismal experience and will go elsewhere.

The waiter brought over some complimentary Prosecco to help us celebrate our anniversary which was such a lovely touch to our evening! The food was absolutely beautiful, we had the asparagus & bruschetta to start with, and then we had a chicken Kiev & steak as mains along with a cheeky mango crumble for dessert. The service on our visit was friendly, well organised and efficient and the food was tasty. Good old chicken kiev was great. I understand it's a pretty long way from the kitchen to the garden and they are certainly getting their steps in! It's probably tricky to serve piping hot food when it's travelled through wind and rain down the garden! Look forward to a visit inside soon where we don't have to worry about huddling outside in blankets.

A beautiful setting by the River Wye lake and some nice footpaths around. Most of the staff were friendly and around all the restrictions, they had the necessary Track and Trace in place. However, upon entry, I was a bit surprised when some of the people we were with were given masks when one has a medical exemption and the other had a face covering (not a surgical mask but this still counts). Later on, an elderly person I could see was aggressively scolded for simply leaving the table without a mask (she was not inside or even going inside). It’s taking the whole thing to another level really. Apart from that, the cabana meant we were shielded somewhat from the weather but there weren’t any heaters too accompany you so do bring blankets! Despite this, they were easily accommodating if we wanted to move to the middle of the cabana to avoid the wind. The adult’s menu was overpriced (Steak and Chips £25 with the Steak being very fatty and small) and the children’s food was overcooked Pasta and stone cold. While they warmed it up, it didn’t sadly suffice. The app where you ordered your food and drinks was sufficient though which was good. Overall, it was a nice setting and hopefully the big re-opening indoors on May 17 might solve some of these issues.

Had a nice setting to it and friendly atmosphere. However, the food was not of that good quality and we did have to send the food back twice since it was really cold. Some of the staff were friendly but there was one really rude waiter who was snappy and short when we asked a couple of questions and he was strict about wearing masks when we were walking to and from the table even though we were in an outdoor setting despite COVID regulations not including mask wearing outdoors. The service was fairly slow and some of the meals were very expensive. I think if some things were improved especially the manners of one of the waiters, things could be much better.

So, eventually at 2.10 someone finally took our order - hurray! 3pm - still no food and all we ordered was a few sandwiches?! We had to leave as we had other birthday plans organised. Visiting here for lunch has really made me not want to bother going out to eat at all until covid is no longer around ! There really is no point spending the money if all places are as unfriendly and rude as the staff are here !I have been abiding by all the government rules and have been nervous about visiting places myself but always act sensibly. However - coming here - the staff treat you like a criminal ! On arrival they were rude to my mother for being on the phone near the entrance - even though outside ! They then placed us on a very dark and dingey table and when we moved they told us off for that too and said it now meant they had to sanitise another table- as if spraying one extra table is exactly difficult!! And then they didnt bother to ask us if we wanted water or came over to ask if we needed more drinks so mid way through a very salty lunch I got up to ask for some water (standing no where near anyone at all!) And was shouted at - 'MASK' a staff member shouted at me - no politeness or would you mind putting on your mask !? I think these staff members have completely forgotten they are supposed to be in hospitality ! So rude the entire time ! The food was mediocre - very expensive for what it was. We will not return here. Very unpleasant.

Lots of outside tables with shade in a beautiful setting. Really surprised by some of the reviews on here as we could not have had better service or food when we visited.

Once again the Mill lived up to its reputation in the family for comfortable safe surroundings and good food. And they didn't mind us playing a couple of quiet board games.

Lovely location and friendly staff. Food let it down, overpriced and nothing special.I aite haddock and chips, the skin of the fish was left on, the batter was chewy (not at all crispy) and like cake dough inside. In fact there’s was more dough than fish!Chips were supposed to be triple cooked, they definitely weren’t, they were also soft and chewy! £14.95 for that? Can’t comment for others I went with but they seems to say the same re their chicken burgers and chips

Very pleasant welcome at the door and then very poor service despite seeing a lot of staff around. Main meal was small and not as described on the specials board. Disappointing experience.

On a lunch time when there were dramatic changes in weather, staff worked hard to offer service in the garden and then to allow the garden diners to move back inside. The Mill location is idyllic and it must be a hard place to work in because of the different levels. Staff are young, enthusiastic and friendly. Food comes quickly and is presented attractively. Truly a great and sympathetic team effort today.

Cosy. Nice atmosphere. Use often and lovely in warmer months when able to sit outside by the river. Grandchildren love it also when able to feed the ducks

Good place for Saturday lunch. Beautiful setting, incredibly serious about sanitation and covid safety measures with sanitiser everywhere and track & trace in place. We had sandwiches in the sun. Dog friendly too - would recommend. Lots of parking.

Went to The Mill as part of a work's team dinner. The lady who organised it had her wedding reception there and thought it was great. However, I was fairly disappointed. The waiter only ever took one drink order from our table so our drinks bill was fairly low. The meal was average at best. Started with the pate and chutney which, in itself was lovely, however the toast that came with it was small and thin. Barely worth having. Had the pork to follow which was on a bed of crispy godknowshat that was burnt underneath. The pork was ok but a bit fatty. Had the sticky toffee pudding and icecream for dessert which was the best part of the meal. The waiter was surly and grubby looking. He clearly couldn't cope with the large number being served. Having said that, it was known it was a large group and maybe they should have drafted more people in. The setting itself was lovely so I'd go back in summer and wold see if the service and meal would be better in a much smaller crowd. A bit disappointing and, frankly, I'm not in a rush to go back.

Arrived on a Saturday night, 6 people and a dog. Looking for a table, walk past the main bar and several members of staff all of who ignore us, wander into the side “bar area” only to have a very scruffy looking member of staff (would guess a manager or supervisor) shout at us behind the bar “dogs aren’t allowed here!!!!” We then ask him for help in finding a table and he very frostily threw menus on a table (set up for a 4 and with a reserved sign on). We were about to walk out there and then but against our better judgement decide to stay as kids needed feeding. Table didn’t comfortably fit 6 but went with it. Very limited choice on menu. Settled for special of KFV (vegan burger special). Tiny portion and incredibly dry, bought in and over cooked. Partners daughter (7 years old) actually asked if we had ordered a kid’s meal as well as the burger was so small. Fish and chips very bland, mushy peas very dry and tasteless. Duck cassoulet was very average. Feedback given to waiter and a half hearted apology was given. Pub wasn’t busy at all and unfortunately given our experience can see why. We have been coming for many years but each time we have been recently it has been worse and worse. Such a shame.

Bit chilly when we arrived but warmed up.Had starters of soup and terrine. Soup was underseasoned but easily rectified. Terrine was very nice. Bread with both was thin sliced, a bit stale and uninspiring. For mains we had confit duck cassoullet and scampi. Duck cassoullet was very nice.Scampi was not great quality and the chips were slightly underdone. Wine starts at £19 a bottle. A bit pricey but seems to be the going rate these days.

Great meal out, there was a minor misunderstanding ordering and the person who I believe was the manager was quick to resolve this and dealt with it brilliantly. The place was cold which you expect this time of year but the food was also a little cold too which may have been due to the draft.Would definitely recommend.

We booked for a family meal midweek.Welcome and service were good.Loved the mushroom starter. A couple of our group had the crab but wished they had the mushrooms also when they saw ours.Lovely location, beautfully lit after dark. The scaffolding didn't really detract form the building, there must be some work going on during the day at the moment. We would go back. Might even try the quiz night they advertise every other Weds pm.

Not quite as good as last time, service slow to nothing at all - waited for nearly an hour for the food to arrive and when it arrived the chips were over cooked on all the plates - it’s a lovely pub and great that our K9 friends are allowed in so we will keep going back .., but .... here’s hoping hopefully better food and quicker service next time

Glorious setting by the river and beautiful building, but what terrible food. We had lunch there today: bland watercress soup with ‘plastic’ white bread (no spoon / knife / butter for the bread), unimaginative heap of couscous with nothing else in it at all which was listed as a main course (laughable), crab on toasts floating on a sea of oil (very average and very small), and a bowl of soggy, grim, rosemary chips (quite where the rosemary featured was a mystery). Won’t be returning any time soon.

A large party of us went on New Years Day for our family lunch. Because my previous meal had been so good I was a little concerned, due to the time of year, this wouldn't match up.....how wrong I was. The food was fantastic, I had the pork belly which was the best I've had. I noticed all the plates were pretty clear by the end and, despite a huge quantity of roast potatoes, they were fought over. I have always been proud of my own roasties but The Mill have stolen my crown. As well as the lovely food the staff were friendly and attentive. Again, my disabled partner was assisted with patience and without fuss. Anyone who requires help in this way will understand how much that means. I am just about to book again!

We dined from the Christmas menu having pre-booked our party of 7, the whole building looked lovely, staff were friendly and we had a lovely fire in the room we were seated in. Food arrived promptly, and our friendly waiter served with good humour. My partner and I both had starters and mains, the others opted for mains & desserts. My partner & I chose the vegan option main, a polenta pancake with roasted cauliflower, courgette & caramelised cob nuts. And this is where the niggle lies, the dish consisted predominantly of the polenta, which was a rectangular slab in the middle of the plate, rather than a pancake of any sort. It tasted of very little. The roast cauliflower and courgette were tasty, but in very short supply, as was the carrot puree, neither of us had any cob nuts. We chose not to make an issue as we were supplied with ample roasted and tasty veg to have with all our mains. As this was a dish from the Christmas menu it lacked anything that made it feel 'special'. It was a bit disappointing as as we'd expected it to be a bit more tasty than that. I feel more thought could have gone in to making the veg the star of the show, rather than the polenta, which is rather tasteless.

After waiting for an extraordinary length of time to be served I was handed two pints of froth by a very young barmaid. When I complained that I had been savagely shortchanged I was told by an interfering patron that I should complain to the manger and not the 'poor barmaid' that was 'just trying to help out'. It turned out the customer was ex bar staff and was interfering with the sale. On top of this I was charged double the price you'd expect to pay in any normal public house. Later on when I received a pint from someone else in my party, the same thing happened again, so I took a photo. See attached.

We paid two visits to this venue. One on a weekend and one during the week. The weekend visit was a mistake for this very popular venue. The Pub has a lovely setting by the river, but on the weekend they need to up their attention to service and time, and when these are wrong then the quality of food suffers. A hour for starters is not acceptable and obviously our main course suffered. A reduction was made to the bill to compensate for the time spent over lunch 1.00pm to 4.00pm.Through all of this the staff were always polite. NOW the weekday lunch visit was totally different .No long waiting times ,food was hot and tasty. So be warned. Same amount of people, time for lunch ,noon to 1.40pm.Both meals were 3 courses

Beautiful setting and opportunities to see the mill waterwheel still working and then enjoy a great lunch either overlooking the water or inside a traditional and rustic building. We thoroughly enjoyed a typical English meal of Fish and Chips and mushy peas. You can't beat the batter of beautifully cooked fish in the UK.

The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was absolutely delicious. We had Sunday roasts all round and they were all very tasty with huge amazing Yorkshire puddings. They also very kindly brought out a “birthday brownie” for my sister piped with a lovely birthday message. Perfect for a family Sunday meal. We chose the Mill because my partner is disabled and they were extremely helpful when I emailed them. This exemplary service continued when we visited. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and made no fuss about my partner's access, they just got on with it as if they had wide wheelchairs every day! The food was delicious and I thoroughly recommend the black pudding croquettes. Unfortunately I was driving but managed a pint with my meal. The waiter was very knowledgeable with my selection and the ale was gorgeous and clearly well kept. I asked if I could take a small cake for one of the party and, again, they couldn't have been more helpful. It was an evening I will treasure.

We (myself , my husband & mum ) had a fabulous 2 night stay , we had come for a specific purpose - to see where my grandmother had worked & lived in the 1940’s !! And we were not disappointed ! We were very lucky , in that we could check in early & we got a car parking space) . The staff were all exceptional , so friendly & helpful The food (& cocktails ) were delicious , and plentiful . There was a good vibe in this hotel and we would definately return & recommend . Had to give 4 stars for sleep as ( maybe it was the room I’d booked ) the bed was extremely small for the 2 of us !

I met with a friend at Notcutts for lunch today. He came down from London and hasn’t been before. Based on today’s experience he says it’s worth the journey and wants to go back again! The fish and chips were delicious. Chips crispy on the outside and super fluffy on the inside. Plus they offer HP sauce (his favourite) The quiche I ordered was very generous and served with a big fresh salad. We were advised at the till that there would be a 15 minute wait but it was much quicker and we really appreciated being told anyway. Fresh food/ hot dishes it’s to be expected. Lovely atmosphere. Friendly staff and restaurant standard food. We’ll be back soon.

First visit here for lunch whilst en route to Winkworth Arboretum. Left with very mixed feelings. It's in a nice location with attractive interior decor but... Completely agree with other reviews regarding staff. The girl on the till came to take our order about 3 seconds after we'd sat down; she didn't seem to have a clue how to use the tablet for orders and spent most of her time standing around doing nothing whilst the guy in the kitchen did all the work. As a result we ended up having to wait ages for our food. We ordered quiche + 2 salads and sausage roll + 2 salads. The food was ok but charging £12 for that is outrageous! And to make matters worse, they allow dogs inside and my lunch was ruined by 3 tiny, stinky dogs arriving at the table behind me. In my view, dogs should not be allowed inside where people are eating - it is so unhygienic. Leave them outside! There are better, cheaper cafes around so I suggest you seek them out.
