We visited the Mill Arms today with a couple of friends and our dog and had a thoroughly fantastic lunch. We asked to sit outside (in the rain!) as our friends are from a tier two area and the staff were very accommodating. We felt very welcome and were particularly impressed by the young waitress who served us as she was so friendly and attentive despite weather conditions being terrible! The menu had excellent choice including good vegetarian options and the food when it arrived was delicious. We will definitely be returning again (though hopefully to an indoor table!). Highly recommend this lovely Pub.

I’m at the Mill Arms as I write this - the bed is lovely and comfortable (we’re in room 6), my son has the sofa bed and slept well. Bathroom well equipped. Staff lovely, friendly but respectful of social distancing. Breakfast is very tasty - having an evening meal tonight and have no reason to think it would be anything less. We came for a 2 nighter to visit Paultons Park, and would absolutely come again. Really lovely place

Wanted a relatively cheap and easy option for a couple of nights whilst fishing in the area. Pub was easy to find and has good easy access parking. Right opposite station ( a bonus if you like trains - like the husband does!). Room was big enough with a bathroom that had both bath and shower. Lots of hot water and excellent shower pressure. Usual coffee, biscuits etc with adequate toiletries. Bar staff friendly. Food ok standard pub fare with a few specials. Breakfast fresh cooked and good. Would (and probably will ) return with the dog. Easy train access to Salisbury or Southampton Friday trip or shopping. Quiet secluded just round the corner from NT Mottisfont.

Waited 40 minutes at lunchtime, when it wasn't busy, for our meal. When it turned up, mine was inedible. The 'chef' clearly didn't know how to make lasagne. A dish turned up with fat at the bottom, then a layer of mince balls which were raw inside, then a few lasagne sheets, topped by some grated cheese. Tip, don't order the lasagne here unless there is a change of 'chef'. Our friends had fish and chips which were fine, so go for that.

Lovely friendly staff, very nice pub in a great spot for walking. However, although there was only one other group eating on a quiet Tuesday evening, the kitchen had run out of some very basic pub menu items. I had chosen cod and chips but 10 minutes later was told they had run out of cod, so I said fine I'll have a burger....a few minutes later was told they had run out of burgers! Third choice lasagne.....result! It was very nice but they really should be a bit more organised!

Have been visiting the Mill Arms on and off over the past 15 years and even had our wedding reception there back in 2007, the food/service was just spot on. In that time we’ve seen it close and then reopen a few times and each time the quality and service, in our opinion, has gradually declined. Anyway having not been there for a approx 18 months, we thought we’d drop in for Sunday Lunch. We ordered roast beef at £13.95 per head so for what I would consider a premium price, expectations were fairly high. What we got was no better than a school dinner - chewy beef, an overdone Yorkshire and mixed veg probably straight out of an Iceland frozen bag. A roast worth £8.95 at best! Coupled with a feral child running around and signs up in the toilets re drugs being dealt and used not being tolerated things have clearly taken a turn for the worse at this former lovely country pub previously visited by former president Jimmy Carter in its glory years, now long gone. Won’t be returning in a hurry. Sad times.

Came across the Mill Arms after visiting Mottisfort house with friends. It has a very large bar and restaurant area, also a conservatory with additional restaurant seating. There are a few sofas and easy chairs around the large fireplace but we felt it didn't have as much atmosphere as a more traditional country pub. However we all enjoyed our food selections which were well presented and very tasty. We had the battered haddock and chips, buffalo lasagna (which my wife loved the flavour of) and the chicken salad with sundried tomatoes and feta. All the staff were friendly and service was very good.

We were served efficiently but the staff were quite flat and nobody smiled. Food was ok to good. Asked if they were going to light the fire (something we went there for, having remembered it in the past) but told not until a particular date, not a problem but the attitude was not friendly and apologetic, more like no we won’t, tough, no smile. Just felt like I didn’t have a nice time, even though the service was efficient. Took a while to realise that it was more about how things felt than about the venue (clean and sparsely decorated) or food (good enough), both of which could have been brought to life a bit more in the right atmosphere. Maybe we just arrived on the wrong day...

Lovely pub in the Test valley - obviously recently refurbished to a very high standard in a modern, chic yet understated way. Nice comfortable sofas around a log burner which sure to be welcome in the winter. Really inviting atmosphere and one of those sort of places that you know, immediately on stepping inside, that it's going to be good. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Nice selection of local beers served in fine condition. Well thought out menu with wide variety of dishes and well priced. Pub has rooms which I didn't see, but if fitted out in same style would be likely to be an excellent spot to stay in local area. Only drawback being proximity to a (minor) railway line, but it seems only to be a small rural line so not a big issue. Close to Mottisfont, but otherwise a little bit out of the way - hope they do well as they deserve to; worth seeking out.

On this occasion, a surprising disappointment compared with a previous visit. The fish special had run out so I had smoked trout nicoise- which had a generous amount of fish, but with about 40 olives, one half slice of egg, a few tired beans and lots of leaves. - very poor value at over £11. A lamb shanks dish, which was tough and under cooked, had good dauphinoise potatoes. Service was patchy with one staff member visibly stressed and allusions made to stressed kitchen staff. However, the Mill Arms is a lovely place with a good atmosphere, welcomes dogs and has a good balance of tables, comfortable sofas and bar seats.

Quite frankly I was so embrassed to have taken my friend there and will not return. First impressions are fine - the Pub has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff, comfy sofas and well laid out space but the food is not good. The wine was plonked on the table with the screw top still in place and no question of tasting it first. The fish platter to start with was ok. The vegetable stir fry is to be avoided - there must be about a months worth of salt intake on one plateful and a pitiful amount of vegetables. The Pie of the Day was lumpy and uninteresting. The chips looked like the stones at Stonehenge. It has such a great position on the Test so where was the delicious local trout?

We (me, my wife, our young son, and my parents) had lunch here after visiting the nearby National Trust property, Mottisfont. The pub's decor is very pleasant and the staff were welcoming. Generally the food was good, but the feedback we gave our waitress related to the way the menu was written, specifically the children's menu. We ordered the tomato and basil pasta for our son, and were surprised when it arrived to see it was spaghetti. Spaghetti seems an odd choice for a kid's meal, as it's not exactly easy to eat, and proved impossible for our 17-month-old son to manage by himself even after we cut it up for him (he's quite independent and doesn't like being spoon-fed). Added to this was the fact that the pasta was in a bland and watery-looking sauce that none of us adults liked the look of and it's not surprising he didn't eat any of it. In our experience, kid's pasta dishes are usually better as penne or spirelli, something easier to stab with a fork or pick up with little fingers, and with a sauce thick enough to stick to the pasta. Fortunately he loved the pea and ham soup my mum had ordered so he didn't go hungry.

No explanation on how to order etc. The pub was fairly quiet with no more than 10 tables dotted around. My other half went to order and was served by a young woman. Who to be fair was brilliant! Our starter arrived no sauce for the whitebait and no dressing on the duck salad so very bland. After starters I went to the bar to order some more drinks I had to wait 15 mins and in that time my main had arrived. The gentleman from earlier was rude to everyone at the bar moaning how busy he had been and that he had cracked ribs (maybe he shouldn't have been working!!) He even turned round to another customer and said "I hate you" all because he ordered two coffees after their meal...Once he begun serving me he forgot the simple drinks order twice and then decided to tell me how he had been working since 9am. No excuse for awful service. I have worked as an assistant manager of a busy pub so know that the long days can be hard but you don't show that to your paying customersBack to the food the burgers were standard however overcooked and no time for dessert as the guy turned round and said the kitchen obviously closes at 9. Would have been nice to have been told that when we arrived. Such a shame that one member of staff can ruin a reputation of a place so much. We have just moved to the area and this could have been a local.

What an amazing find! My roast beef was the best I've had in a very long time. I asked for rare and rare it was. The Yorkshire puds, roast parsnips and potatoes were obviously home made and the veg weren't overcooked. The service was lovely too - efficient and friendly. For us the best thing was that well behaved dogs are more than welcome. We'll be back. If you're planning a visit to Mottisfont Abbey, I'd suggest lunch here first.

Very good food, friendly staff and best of all.... Dog is welcome anywhere in the pub/restaurant area. Had Mondays deal of two steak meals for £20 with choice of rump or rib eye. Has one of each and both very good. Plus mixed grill and veggie chilli perfect. Thank you

My friend and I followed the NT trail from Spearywell Woods and were looking forward to a cold lager at 11.45am but could not gain access. We continued our circular walk and came back later as the pub looked attractive and there was plenty of parking. We enjoyed particularly nice bread and oils, hummous and pitta followed by goats cheese salad. The accompanying chips were a bit of a letdown and I would have liked more cheese in the salad, but overall the food and service was good. I would be happy to return when I am in the area again

I had the water buffalo burger and have to say how tasty it was. A small but a very good selection of beers on tap. Service was excellent polite and prompt. Only criticism was batter on onion rings was a little greasy for me. We're be going back again as they have plenty of offers on and the food is too good to miss out on. Check out their website for their great offers.

We are here after visiting Mottisfont gardens. The Sunday lunch was very good, if a bit expensive (£14.50) for one course, but that seems par for the course in the area. Service wasn't the quickest, but at least the food was cooked to order and was very good. There was only a very limited choice for a coeliac a needing a gluten free option. There was no need to book.

I had a meal here with my partner a couple of weeks ago. We were looking for a country pub with traditional food in a lovely setting and on walking in thought we had struck gold. However, immediately after we chose our seats in the conservatory we heard a row starting in the main bar area. We ignored it at first thinking that it was just one of those things, but it continued throughout our meal, with various family members coming into the bar area to try and placate the lady concerned (she was almost hysterical and refused to go back into another room where they appeared to be eating). The member of staff serving our food and the drinks at the bar did nothing to diffuse the situation and at no point acknowledged the clearly tense atmosphere that this had created for us. In fact, the member of staff spent most of the time counselling this lady loudly throughout our meal, which was completely ruined. On top of this the food itself was disappointing. My partner had fish and chips which consisted of a very small piece of cod with a lot of greasy batter whilst I had chicken and leek pasta, which consisted of an extremely thin cream sauce, which I expect had little done to it other than poured from a carton of single cream. It was flavourless and my partner felt really ill that evening due to the greasiness of the food. Throughout charging us for the bill the lady at the bar continued her conversation with the lady sat in the room with her and barely managed a nod and a smile. Maybe this is a 'local' place for 'local' people?? Considering how empty the place was I was disappointed at the lack of effort shown by both the chef and the waiting staff.

The setting was lovely however the service was slow and although the menu looked excellent my burger bun came out burnt, which was disappointing but in fairness the rest of the meal was good and filled me up!

My husband and I visited last Saturday. I had purchased a voucher through Groupon for a gourmet burger meal for two. The setting is really pretty, but the general grounds outside could do with a pit of sprucing up. We were quickly shown to our table, it was in the main area by the bar. Surprisingly for a Saturday it was quite quiet. We ordered our meal and it arrived very quickly.... I'm not really a burger person but my husband loves them... however it was really good. I opted for the sweet potato fries at an additional charge and they were also really good. We would definitely return again.

This is a 'proper' country pub establishment. Nicely laid out with solid, sturdy wooden furniture and with the added advantage of a pleasant conservatory with seating for dining. We had a Groupon for a Gourmet Burger for two and the choices included two 4-oz. Beef (each), Water Buffalo, Wild Boar, Cajun Chicken and Mushroom with Blue Cheese. Each burger was accompanied by fresh baby salad leaves with tomato, cucumber, onion, etc., coleslaw, large onion rings and chips. The burgers were fresh local meat and they were encased in lovely lightly toasted brioche roll. Couldn't actually finish everything on the very generously laden plate. Very fresh, nicely presented and tasty. Couldn't fault the meal. Noted the offer of two steaks on Mondays for £20 and based on the experience, will be booking up soon for this.

Had the best Roast dinner we have had out for a long time. The pub itself is very nice.We felt a little disappointed at not being asked if we would like more drinks when our food was served, as we would have ordered some, and to us that's their chance of another sale. We will definitely be back as the food was just so good.

It is lovely when a good pub/restaurant just keeps getting better, and our latest visit here was excellent. With 6 hungry mouths to feed plus a large dog whose food had been forgotten (!) We were very pleasantly surprised by the owner's friendliness and flexibility. The food was excellent, and the ambience of the pub was great. A super place for a pre or post walk/ Mottisfont meal.

We were going to Monttisfont near by. This place looked ideal for my friends birthday lunch looking at the trip advisor reviews. Walking in the place looked tatty. The barman/waiter/person in charge had a growing beard or stubble and seemed a bit untidy. The menus had food stains on them and were tatty. The scampi wasn't cooked The wine we ordered didn't come with the meal and no-one was at the bar as our (second meal) was going cold to get our wine. A large wine was £6.45. Be warned.Jackie

After a nearby client meeting, my colleague and I took lunch here today (primarily to avoid having to go back to London,), and we were both thoroughly impressed by this lovely place in the beautiful Hampshire countryside. The three bean stew was absolutely just what the proverbial Doctor ordered on such a chilly day, and the chips were beauts. The boss (not my wife on this occasion), had the pork stew and was similarly impressed. We'd have loved to have savoured the beer range, but sadly adherence to the law of the land rendered this impossible. Cracking service also, and judging by the "ladies who lunch" there, it is a popular little place.Would love to return one day!!,

This remains a favourite lunch stop when walking in the area or visiting nearby Mottisfont Abbey. The welcome is always friendly and informal and the food and beer are of excellent value and quality. I enjoyed a most tasty venison pie whilst my friend appreciated the trio of sausages in the bright conservatory which leads from the main bar areas. The pub is adjacent to Mottisfont Station and also has a skittle alley and rooms.

Came here with my partner for dinner on Pizza Friday. The potted ham hock starter was almost frozen, the toast that came with it was cold and the butter was too hard to spread. Hummus & pitta bread starter was ok. No one came to clear our starter dishes before the main course came out. The real problem was the pizzas - although we ordered two of the same, one was clearly far more cooked than the other but both were fairly tepid and tasted unpleasant. They did not taste at all like authentic Italian pizzas cooked in a real pizza oven with fresh ingredients - they tasted much more like frozen pizzas which had been microwaved and then put under the grill for a minute.

We booked this venue for our Golden Wedding family meal. As there were 20 of us we used the large room with a skittle alley and had it to ourselves. There would have been room for another dozen or so. We were allowed to decorate the room with suitable balloons/messages etc and the grandchildren plugged their smartphones in to the room's sound system with suitable musicThe staff were helpful and efficient and the food was very good. All very satidsfactory

Chanced upon this lovely pub after a rainy visit to nearby Mottisfont (National Trust). The staff were attentive and the food was varied in choice and very good. Hope to eat there again. Only disappointment were the rather scruffy toilets - no lock on one door and loo roll dispenser was empty though the replacements had been put on top of the cistern.
