We had great time today at The Duke of The Test. It was my daughter birthday and we just wanted something special and staff delivered! Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly. Food was great! Asparagus oh my ! They were the best. For 4x main (two adults and two children) 4 desserts, 2x glasses of wine and juices plus one starter £120. Reasonable price, we left absolutely full and with very happy 5year old who absolutely loved her surprise! Thank to all staff!

The staff were a bit off that there was no reservation made, despite many tables being available. Was not made to feel welcome initially, was made to feel that I do not belong in this establishment. Although after the staff warmed up. Food was good but not spectacular and a bit over priced. But certainly not bad. A long black hair was found in my dish. I do not have black hair. Staff did check on me during my meal and asked if I needed another drink, but after no further visits, table not cleared and bill was not offered. The building, grounds and location on the river is stunning. Overall definitely a slightly pretentious place and stiff staff 👎

The place looks amazing, the waiting staff are friendly, but it took a long time for our food to arrive and, worst of all, 2 dishes came out and we waited a while for the other 3. This made things a bit awkward at the table. The food was very good though. It was a Saturday lunchtime and the place was busy, so that might explain the issues.

Second visit, Saturday. Very busy good atmosphere, decent food, good service. A note of caution :- Make sure ✔️ you don’t end up on one of the tables near the door… this time of the year it’s freezing 🥶🥶🥶. We asked to move. Not possible as FULLY BOOKED. It spoilt our evening. Christmas lunch. Food was good service was good BUT ( I’m a youthful 70 year old) the waitress was condescending… as if my friend and I were senile and in a Nursing Home 🏠 environment. When it came to paying the bill they charged us for 2 x 3 courses as opposed to 2 x 2 courses. When pointed out it was accepted but with a smile 😊😳😳😳😳. It was a £10 difference. I remain unconvinced. The overall bill with 2 x glass of wine circa £90 so TOP END pub prices

The food was very good and great value, However, the same cannot be said about the service. There were 3 of us and 2 meals arrived and we had to wait some time for the third. We than had to wait some time for our vegetables to arrive, by this time our meals were only warm. A waitress did ask how our meals were and when told they were only warm clearly did not expect the comment and walked away without even so much as an apology. The waiting staff clearly preferred to spend their time as a group chatting at the bar than providing a service. Reviews a very useful for future customers but don't expect the pub to respond or apologise. They haven't replied to any of the reviews, good or bad. Will be voting with our feet and going up the road to The Goat. 1st class food, great value and brilliant staff.

On arrival we were seemingly dismissed the staff were too busy on their mobile phones or chatting amongst themselves to bother with customers. We were eventually and grudgingly shown to a table. In ordering drinks of the five we selected including alternatives only two were available and no apology or explanation was given. The food was however of very good quality and fairly if not cheaply priced. Such a shame this was let down by terrible customer service, fortunately Romsey is blessed with far more welcoming pubs although the food does not match

Some one at an adjoining table said it was the best meal he had had out for a very long time , We agree with him .From the crisp white table cloths and napkins the experience was very good , We forgave the unfinished cloak rooms and the rather slow service as everything that arrived at our table was freshly cooked to a high standard ,(which takes time ) . Had a really good meal here on Thursday 2nd November 2017. We had ravioli and pork belly bites to start and both were very tasty. The mains were ribeye steak and pork belly and both were excellent as was the service. Not in this case though as we thought the normal menu pricing was still good value and we'll definitely be returning. Thoroughly recommended.

He provided a set price menu, and we pre ordered our food. A couple of rooms were set aside and layed out for our party. After surprising the Birthday girl (my Mum), the food arrived, beautifully presented and hot. The mini ploughman starter was particularly complimented upon and was not very mini. All courses used “in season” ingredients and were delicious. The staff were very helpful and attentive. We will definitely be returning Thank you Pete and staff

It was our first visit here. The staff were friendly. On the whole the food was good. The burger meals looked very good, but were let down because the buns were stone cold, which was a shame. They needed to be at least warm, if not crispy topped. Having said that the chicken, and pork meals werenice. It was all beautifully presented. I also felt that perhaps there could be some more traditional starters, but l would return again.

Went to Dukes Head to celebrate a friend's birthday. Lovely location and good ambience. However the service turned out to be terrible. First - staff forgot the dinner for the birthday girl. Her food arrived once others have already finished their main course. Then they brought plates for the birthday cake but we had to ask for cutlery. All main courses were either cold or lukewarm. Pub was not busy and it felt more like they did not care about the customers. Also very badly managed. Gents had to go outside to a portaloo as the internal toilets were out of action. We do not mind paying the price for good food and service but this was really really pathetic. Appalling experience. Stay well away. Romsey has better dinning facilities.

Delicious home-made trout terrine followed by venison in blackcurrant jus with wild mushrooms, little beetroots and normandy potatoes, beautifully cooked and served. Good sized portions too - had no room left for a pudding, sadly. My pint of Double Drop was a little sour but my wife praised her glass of malbec. The first impressions were very good, the tables had table clothes and linen napkins, and a nice glass vase with a yellow rose and gipsophilea. The atmosphere was very pleasant. There were wine glasses on the table which were upside down! We ordered our food and drinks, which were brought to the table, in new wine glasses, but the upside down ones were left on the table. We moved them to one side which was a bit strange. Other diners had glasses left on their tables as well. The main course was acceptable, but the pudding was heavy. We then had coffee which was luke warm and not very nice.

My husband and I have been looking for a "gastropub" near Romsey and a search brought up a recommendation of this pub and it did not disappoint! We went on a quiet Wednesday and there were only one other group of diners, but some others enjoying dinks in the pub area. For fish fanciers like my husband, there are many fish dishes offered on the menu, but surprisingly he chose the chicken in mushroom sauce and I, still on the search for a worthy pub-burger chose it with a smoked black bun, which sounded interesting. They were also very accommodating in my request to exchange the chips for the seasonal vegetables.Well, all I can say is "Wow! Our search is over!" Everything about this meal was simple supurb! My husbands starter of bread and marinated olives ( did I really steal half of them...not me! ) was delicious and the bread tasted homemade. My burger was amazing and the black bun was so tasty; the seasonal veg of kale, carrots and beets was outstanding...I just wish I could cook my kale so perfect! My husband raved about his chicken dish as well.It is a tad on the pricey side, but we are so willing to pay it for this caliber of food.Service is great and the staff helpful and friendly. We will be back soon!

Went here today as we heard some good reviews about the new takeover. We got a nice warm welcome,we looked at the menu it's a tad pricey but thought we would see what the food was like first ,to see if the food reflected the price .We both chose the black king prawns in garlic. When it arrived our eyes nearly popped out of our heads the food looked amazing, beautiful fresh mixed leaf salad with cherry tomatoes & a light tasty dressing, created in a dome shape. Fantastic soda bread, like it had just come out of the oven & a delicate slice of butter on the side , the hot prawns were fanned & large as you like with sliced garlic & a drizzle of butter. This all came plated on wooden boards with two ceramic bowls one for empty shells & one with Rosemary Spriggs to wash your hands. Super new cotton ( not paper as standard) napkins with our highly polished cutlery tucked inside (splendid) we absolutely loved this amazing tasting food & worth every penny £8:50 . The newly decorated pub with its white tablecloth decorated tables full of sparkling glasses and cutlery was a rare sight to see in puds these days . Thank you to executive chef Aaron we will most definitely return to try this exciting menu. If I could change one thing it would be the out dated tables in the bar area & replace them with soft furnishings ( just a personal thought) hopefully the weather will be nicer next time to sit out front in the beautiful Patio area. Once again thank you to all who looked after us so brilliantly.

The last few visits under several previous management regime have not been good so it was with some trepidation that my wife and I visited for a meal on a Saturday in mid September 2017. Beer on offer was a local ale from the Flack Manor brewery, "Doom bar" and Adnams "Ghost Ship". My choice was "Ghost Ship" which proved to be a poor start to the evening as it was off. However, this was exchanged for "Doom Bar" with no issues and this was OK. The menu was very varied and appealing. My wife went for the wild mushroom risotto which she said was excellent and I went for the boring choice of Rib-eye steak. Boring that is except for it came with the intriguing "Black and White" chips. I was told that these were chips part cooked and then soaked in Balsamic vinegar and then finished off. These were absolutely outstanding. The taste was exceptional and the texture I can only compare with chips I remember from my childhood 50 years ago when it was proper fat the chips were cooked in (I did not ask what these chips were actually cooked in). Anyway, it was a very enjoyable meal and although quite expensive I'm sure my wife and I will revisit soon.

Seafood I believe is a speciality here and it's great! I've sampled a fair amount of the menu and I've never been disappointed. Great food and portion sizes mean you won't leave there feeling hungry. Very helpful and polite staff.

A large party of us went for a family dinner and everyone's food was fantastic. Plenty of it, cooked and presented to a high standard we all thought it was delicious and excellent value. All the staff were friendly, helpful and provided a good service. It is a charming country pub with friendly locals at the bar or separate rooms for quiet dining. Would highly recommend going here.

When for a long walk around the Romsey countryside and ended here for a mid-week lunchVery pleasantly surprisedWe choose two items from the specials board Chicken Leek and Gammon Pie – One of the nicest pies I’ve had for ages – usually with Pub pies the expectation exceeds the experience but not in this case – the veg and chips were also first rateWhole Plaice - Again really good – a whole fish – fresh with good accompanying salad etc.Pricewise we had a Pint and a coffee and the whole bill was under £30 so pretty good valueOne of the other reviewers said this is not a Gastro Pub but whist the menu is not pretentious we found the food excellentGood friendly service also

This was our first time to this establishment, and we were pleasantly surprised. A spacious car park, although on a sharp bend of a relatively fast road needs care entering or exiting. We had booked ahead (the day before) and there were still one or two tables available on the day, but lots of tables already reserved. As stated on other TripAdvisor reviews, we found the staff friendly and efficient. There was a large menu on offer including Gluten Free and Vegetarian options. The food arrived quickly and was a very big plateful - well worth the cost. I had roast lamb and my partner had roast turkey. Lots of hot veg arrived on a separate plate, and we had lots of meat, 3 roast potatoes, roast parsnips and a Yorkshire Pudding on each plate already, plus generous amounts of gravy. If I could ask for one thing it would be to either ask on ordering whether gravy was required, or if it could be served separately.I had a chocolate, peanut and caramel sweet, served with cream in a separate jug, which was also very nice. There are tables set up in a back garden, which will be lovely to use in the spring/summer.Would recommend, and we will definitely return.

I have passed this pub for over 40 years and never been I in it. The sea food had been recommended and it didn't disappoint. We had two platters, one hot of sardines, King prawns, and chilli prawns and another cold of whole, peeled prawns and salmon. All served with salad, bread and chips. An excellent meal which could have served four. We will be visiting again soon.

Friendly staff, great roast lunches. Booked a table for nine and was really impressed with the friendly staff which looked after us extremely well. Food was very good, we had three different roasts and children's meals, all were very good. Decent selection of vegetables too.

The food was very average & overpriced. I had a special which was supposed to be a rump steak, New York Style which was more like a tough bit of stewing steak served with greasy fried eggs. Presentation was verging on cafe style. The only redeeming feature for me was the waitress. Her service was excellent! Those dinning with us had a similar story to tell with their food. The last time I came here, the experience was excellent. It appears to have 'gone down hill' somewhat since. Also, for a Saturday evening the atmosphere was non existence. I will not be going again.

We had visited Mottisfont earlier in the day and decided to drop in for a quick bite. It seemed quite a popular place. The food was excellent if a little limited. Good value for money tho, and the mussels were really good

It's average and I mean average. It's not a gastro pub but another pub which has nothing different or special to offer. Unlike many other pubs which really do serve delicious food. It's okay I will go back for a drink but not for food. The food filled a hole but didn't have the wow factor.

We've been here a few times, most recently with a motorcycle group who use it for their monthly social meet ups.Whenever we go it's a warm welcome. Lovely friendly staff too.As for the food. Delicious! Their Cajun chicken, eaten recently, was fantastic and there was plenty of it so value for money. Everyone had lovely meals it was hard to pick one.Would recommend and will be back! :)

I had a really good hoisin duck pie from the specials menu. You get huge portions of classic pub food for a reasonable price, the staff are very friendly and attentive, and there was a cockerel running around the car park.

Friendly staff and good food. If anything they give you too much food, very generous portions. A great typical British pub.

Wow! We were really surprised to stumble upon this unassuming pub on our way to the New Forest. The food was amazing as was the customer service and attention to detail. It's so worth a visit with a friendly atmosphere . Thank you for a wonderful lunch. Salt and pepper squid was delicious as was the cassoulet .
