Booked a table here for a late lunch on Sunday 22nd Dec. 2 adults 2 teens. When we arrived we were treated by warm, friendly staff and taken to a lovely table in the restaurant. The decor is beautifully done and it really gives that cozy and relaxed atmosphere we love. Our lovely waiter advised us well and we enjoyed some of the best food we have ever had inc honey glazed pigs in blankets, confit of duck and beef short ribs. As a family we like food, we enjoy the whole experience of finding a nice pub with a good menu and have been lucky enough to find some around the area, however, we were simply blown away by just how great The Milbury was, yes it might be a little bit more pricey than some places but it is worth every penny! This place is a real gem and we all agreed that it was exceptional! I highly recommend!

Superb, beautifully refurbished inn on the crest of the South Downs with panoramic views across Hampshire. Delightful, friendly staff and brilliant for walkers exploring the South Downs Way. Don’t miss the 300ft deep well inside the pub with its original man powered lifting wheel. Highly recommended.

This lovely old pub in the heart of beautiful Hampshire countryside has had extensive and tasteful restoration a year ago by the current owners Clive and Tanith Cummings, preserving all it's original features, including the indoor treadmill to raise water from the well. Excellent restaurant, superb food and very imaginative menu serving 'sharing' platters. Anyone hoping for ubiquitous pub grub of burgers, battered cod or scampi and chips with everything might be disappointed, because The Milbury choice is much much better than that. Our recent Sunday lunch with 10 family, including 4 children, was superb. There is no kids menu, but no matter because the sharing platters give plenty of choice and portion sizes to suite children. Charming owners and staff, and a chef who really knows what he is doing. A very welcome respite from the mediocrity of so many pub-chain pubs these days.

I was really worried about this. I thought the old pub was great and full of character and I was worried the huge refurb would have ruined it. I was proved totally wrong luckily. They have kept all the key features of the pub and the ambience but also improved it. The water wheel is still there and the tip floor snug lounge was wonderful ( apparently it was there before but I hadn’t seen it. It also wasn’t as nice I am told. Will be back. Hopefully to eat next time. Also very dog friendly. Jim Alison and Milou

Came here on a recommendation and very pleased we did. Lovely menu with varied options so there will be something for all tastes, loved the mix n max tapas style way food comes out and that you can literally order whatever you like. The rarebit sourdough, steak tartar and chocolate mousse were standout plates for me but literally everything we ordered was a flavour bomb. Lovely staff, beautiful surroundings. Will be back!

Very nice environment with a comfortable bar and separate dining room. We did think overall the food was nice but not excellent. The pigs in blankets were delicious as was the venison scotch egg. Squid was tender but needed more seasoning. The hoxton sourdough was not actually sourdough but slices of white bread. I buy it from their Jewry Street shop often. Duck Confit Bruschetta sounded tasty but came on the aforementioned sliced white bread that hadn't been toasted. We questioned the young man serving us and was told it comes on untoasted/grilled bread. That then is not a Bruschetta. We shared a large board of seafood that was good and very generous in size. Creme Brulee was excellent and the service throughout was attentive. So mainly good just a couple of blips.

Excellent service, good freshly cooked food and friendly staff. The dining experience was unique, in so far as the food ordered is served on the table to share amongst the customer group. Something similar to ‘tapas’ restaurants where dishes are shared, but in this case larger dishes of typical British food (and other varieties). We had Lamb. Pleasant, clean surroundings. Will visit again.

This old inn is riddled with history and stories of days when it was frequented by smugglers making their way to and from the coast. It has one of the best views panoramic views of Hampshire and an ancient water wheel with a well dug into the chalk by hand over 800 years ago. It is reputed to be the deepest well in Hampshire. It has recently changed hands and the new owners have invested their hearts and a considerable amount of cash in renovating the building and grounds. The wild flower meadow is a real gift to nature. What a spot to sit with a G&T and watch the sun set! Or rise for that matter. On the recommendation of a friend, we had lunch here today and were absolutely delighted with the food and service. We will be back on a regular basis. Pear pavlova with peanut brittle is to die for!

Visited for lunch curious to see the place after the refurbishment and the new ownership. The difference is beyond description. Despite being very busy with a quirky Citroen 2CV party we were made to feel very welcome and managed to find a table upstairs in the mezzanine, wow what a location. The furniture and decor is first rate and totally appropriate to the setting. And the food! The menu looked like something you would find in a swanky area of Paris. We ordered a steak and a sushi style tuna dish. The quality, presentation and service was outstanding and reasonably priced. Oh, and despite it being September it was a wet miserable day so they had log fires burning, such a nice touch! I'm in my late 60's and this is probably the nicest pub I've visited. I only hope that my review doesn't make it impossible to get a table in future!!

Totally superb renovation. The whole building looks loved and cared for. The new owners are absolutely fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble. They give a warm welcome to everyone as they come in. Wonderful atmosphere and there are so many areas to sit; on comfy sofas above the well, snuggled in chairs near one of the log burners, or simply sit up at the Bar. Fantastic renovation. Great attention to detail and high quality finish. The pub has an interesting selection of drinks on offer, rather than the usual range of draft beers and wines. I have never written aTrip advisor review before, but feel compelled to do so after reading some of the other very rude reviews on this site and because this is a traditional pub that is very interesting to visit. We stopped in on the halfway point of a walk on a drizzly January day. A huge fire was roaring in the cosy bar and the landlord was chatting with some drinkers at the bar, a table of diners came in after. Our family of 4 had lemonades, ales and crisps, admiring the barmats decorating the beams and the ambience of this historic pub. We also visited the loos which were very clean. After seeing a painting of the wheel and well on the wall, we realised what must lie behind the "wheel room" door. We asked the landlord if we could look, although this room was not open when we visited, and he was very accommodating and friendly. When we came out he told us lots of interesting and amusing historic facts about the pub which delighted my children (and me!). My daughter was so amazed by the well that she declared it the best day of her life! This is an old school pub. It reminded me of the pubs of my childhood (80s) in that it is a traditional pub and not one that has been tarted up or is trying to be something it's not. Enjoy it for what it is. Perhaps you will even have the best day of your life - !! We will certainly return one day, we will include the pub in another walk soon. Thank you!

My wife and I were walking the South Downs Way and got caught in a downpour just after passing Milbury’s. We turned back in the hope that it was open, and went in dripping wet. Although we only wanted shelter and a small drink, the next few minutes were very memorable. The place itself is well worth a visit but what made it was the unique landlord. He must have attracted the most diverse set of trip advisor reviews of any establishment, and as we left he recommended that we read some of the “terrible” ones - and his replies! I’ve just done so and I haven’t laughed so much in ages. Go there, say hello nicely to Martin and don’t take anything (including yourself) too seriously. Enjoy. PS - thanks Martin for taking pity on a couple of drowned rats and cheering us up.

My husband found this pub online, searching for 'Hampshire pubs,' and we now can't believe we didn't know about it before. It's lovely, a proper pub in beautiful countryside, and we liked it very much. My husband is normally a Wadworth 6X man, but Martin the landlord steered him in the direction of a beer he didn't know but enjoyed. We'd dropped in at lunchtime, and decided on a light pub lunch of baguettes (steak for him, prawns for me) which came attractively served and very complete, with a nice but not too huge accompaniment of well-cooked chips. It was all very good, and the prices were perfectly sensible. I'm just sorry we didn't have the time or the room to explore the menu more thoroughly - we'll have to go back! Beautiful old pub interior, spotless loos, pleasant service, and an interesting assortment of fellow customers on a Thursday lunchtime, coupled with a complete absence of canned music - I can't think of anything to criticise. Thank you to Martin and his staff, who are clearly doing a great job.

This was my fist time visiting the pub. It was a Wednesday so was fairly quiet but that gave us the opportunity to speak to the landlord who was very entertaining. I cannot believe the conversation I have just had, when calling The Milburys to enquire about making a reservation for the skittles alley. My call was answered promptly and I started to explain what I was looking for, when the gentleman who answered the phone abruptly interrupted me. He spoke over me, stating that “you’re going to have to motor on mate as I’m too busy to talk with you”. I was taken aback by this, somewhat shocked and thought that I misheard. I asked if the person was able to repeat what he just said - and he repeated the same sentence verbatim. I expressed my thoughts on his telephone approach and that I no longer wanted to make a booking. I am shocked and appalled that such a rude approach could be taken toward potential customers. I cannot remember such a time where I have received a response as this - so much so that I will not be taking any business to The Milburys and will be sharing my experience with as many people as I can. Must be two landlords. On the day i visited i was met by the landlord who really wasn’t in the mood to engage, which can always be a hurdle when working in the hospitality industry. Part of the enjoyment of a pint is the ambience, as nobody else was there, it made the landlords mood even more uncomfortable. Instead of going into detail regarding the rest of my experience i would suggest that readers view reviews that are not positive, and then read the landlords replies. This will provide more insight than my wittering. It seems peculiar that after a negative comment there appears to be a swathe of reviews raving about the hospitality, my only conclusion is that there are two landlords. Good luck.

Having spent a week walking the South Downs Way with my dog, i was on the last leg. I had met so many wonderful and kind people along the route, stayed in some great pubs with fabulous landlords. Unfortunately my stop at The Milbury’s tainted my otherwise fantastic trip. Me and my dog where caught in storm Alex and had been walking for several hours in torrential rain and a flooded trail. We kept going knowing that there would be somewhere to rest and dry out when we reached the Milbury’s. The hostility we were met with when we arrived was truly shocking. We were soaked to the skin, shivering and cold, only to be told that due to COVID no dogs where allowed. This in itself was not the issue as i understand if they had made that rule, then they had to stick by it. It was, however the way we were spoken to and basically thrown out of an empty pub into the rain whilst i was trying to make a phone call, being told that the nearest place was 4 miles away and ‘yeah, there’s a terrible reception here’.... having seen the other reviews i can only assume that this desperately unpleasant man was the landlord. #bekind is obviously a phrase that does not exist in his vocabulary!

Stopped here as a walker doing the South Downs Walk. We all ordered a drink and a plate of food. I am very gluten intolerant so cannot eat gluten. I asked the landlord to explain to me on the menu what I can eat that doesn’t contain gluten. “Why don’t you tell me what you can”. To which I reply “anything without gluten...”. I asked him to check with the kitchen that it would all be fine. That the chips aren’t cooked in the same oil as breaded items etc. Landlord responded “it’s fine”. Usually I don’t trust places like this, but I trusted this (albeit grumpy) response as I had explicitly asked him to check with the kitchen and had explained myself well. I ordered the gammon, eggs and chips. Food came in a timely matter. The polite waitress informed me that my food was the gluten free plate. The rest of the group enjoyed their food just fine. I, however, got severely ill very quickly after the leaving the establishment. Had to cut the walk short.I will never be returning again.

We have eaten here before and the food is good, traditional pub food, well prepared and presented. It was quite busy the night we ate, with several other tables already there when we arrived and a large party. The only issue I have is with the staff, who are doing a good job, but the leadership set by the landlord is not great. He is very friendly, but doesn't get that when someone is standing waiting to be served and his other staff are all busy, he should break off his personal chat with friends and see to your order. Because he sets that standard, some of his other staff follow his lead - I had to move three times to catch someone's eye, when all that is needed is a quick look and a " I'll be with you shortly". But the food is good if you want a traditional pit or roast etc, and clearly if you are a local you get moved up the service tree a notch or two. We will go back - maybe after enough visits we'll get a welcome at the door! I can't comment on the beer as I don't drink it but the men who did found it fine.

Sometimes the grumpiest landlords can keep the best ale. Not here. I can think of nothing to commend this poor establishment (save the historic features which were nothing to do with the present incumbent). A non-existent welcome from a monosyllabic character behind the bar. Not only was he happy to serve the most opaque pint of ale I've had in many a year, he refused to replace it. I can never understand why people with such poor personal attributes want to share their lives with the public. I look forward to the standard "you can drink elsewhere' response later tonight, when he's had a few. (But I wouldn't recommend he had them here).

Started to be disappointed when everyone got their food all at different points over the course of 3 hours. Was rude when we had to leave and tried to be humorous wasn’t exactly funny. What i think is funny is that the landlord has framed photos of himself around the pub which is a bit weird in my opinion. The pub was absolutely disgusting needed a deep clean! The women’s toilets were not up to standard, neither of the toilets flushed properly. Cannot speak for the men’s toilets but i’m sure they were just as dirty as the women’s. Had a lovely meal for my birthday with an excellent chilled bottle of wine to go with it. We all enjoyed the food and the atmosphere with a lovely log fire burning to welcome us. The landlord was friendly and welcoming and made our visit a real pleasure. Thank you for making my birthday special.

I have been going to The Milburys for quite a few years and I firmly believe it to be one of the best pub/restaurants in Hampshire. This is a family run establishment with Martin, the Landlord leading his first, second and third generation team. The service is very good as is the food of which there is a great variety at sensible prices. The atmosphere in the public bar with a roaring fire in winter is welcoming , very friendly and happy go lucky. To the jerk from Piltdown I have this to say - Your diatribe says a lot about you, miseable old loser comes to mind and I suspect your favourite meal is tripe tripe and more tripe. To anyone wanting a different place to go for a meal or just a drink the you could not do better than The Millburys. Brian of Gosport

My husband was a keen classic bike enthusiast and as this was the pub his club used for their bike meets, I felt it appropriate to have his wake here. Martin laid on a great spread and nothing was too much trouble. We had exclusive use of two rooms giving us plenty of space and seating for everyone. A great place for a fitting send off for my husband.

We stopped at what is potentially a fantastic pub very strategically located on the South Downs Way. In retrospect the virtually empty beer garden and bar on a hot Saturday afternoon should have been a clue and we should have cut our losses and gone on. To summarise: landlord monosyllabic and unwelcoming, his wife sarcastic. The drinks very expensive although I think I was charged extra for asking for poncy mixers for my wife's G&T; rather than meekly accepting warm Schweppes off the shelf. One of those pubs where you wonder why the landlord hasn't jacked it in if he hates dealing with the public so much. If you aren't convinced by my review just read his responses to the negative reviews on here to get an idea of his attitude. Very sad because it's an ancient pub and if our experience is anything to go by its days are numbered.

Great food and quaint historic pub atmosphere. Pleasant service and the landlord was very welcoming and a good laugh. We enjoyed his stories. Fabulous big open fire 🔥 We can definitely recommend. It has a nice beer garden.

We had a lazy day on good Friday and fancied a quick afternoon drink in a country pub. We got there just before the 3pm closing. It has plenty of outside seating and good parking. It also had that smell of a good wood fire. Will try again for food.

I would like to say the pub was excellent, I would like to add that the food was great, wholesome pub food, I would also like to say that the beer was spot on and I would lastly like to say that the landlord was welcoming and witty....but we promised we wouldn’t say anything as he really doesn’t want more people to go there. He’s busy enough. So apologies...oh and we will be back...cheers for a great night in front of the roaring fire!

Stopped off here at one minute past 2 today hoping for a sandwich and a pint. Picked up the menu and a very grumpy landlord said ‘food finished’. OK, fair enough, I didn’t know it finished that early as we’re not local, but the guy didn’t even bother asking if we wanted a hot meal or a snack. If it was my pub, I would be happy to make a quick sandwich, wouldn’t take that long, even if the chef had finished. A real shame, given the pub’s lovely location and history and we won’t return, but I’m guessing the landlord won’t care about that. Time for him to retire I think.

Ignore all the rude and misinformed reviews for this pub. It is an excellent, real English pub, which serves ales as they should be. The landlord, Martin, is a stoic who doesn't waste words on what doesn't need to be said. If you like proper, warm and flat English ale served in a real pub, with excellent home cooked food then this can't be bettered. If, however, you want a phoney modern gastro pub serving freezing cold Euro-piss and highly priced portion controlled, chill cooked food then you should go elsewhere as you won't like this experience.

A fantastic time with the extended family of about 17, a lovely old proper pub full of artifacts and history, including a 250yr old waterwheel and skittles, yes a skittle alley in a separate room.

Lovely pub with historical features and (seemingly) a famously grouchy landlord. We loved the place and have nothing but kind words for the captain at its helm, for this was all we received from him apart from prompt service and exceptional pub food. Another great pub to add to my ever-eroding mental list. Hope I can remember it long enough to find my way back.

Don't always believe what you read. (Fake News). The pub is excellent, food is good with a good menu and speedily served. We go there regularly ever other month with a car club and never had a bad moment, never had a complaint in eight months.

Popped into the Milburys last week for lunch where the landlord managed to get behind the bar -no cheery greeting in fact he didn’t speak at all. Ordered drinks and food and produced my card to pay & without a word he took it from me and thought he had gone to get machine -reappeared having used my card wirelessly and gave me card and a receipt I asked how he had done that & he said “he had magic fingers”. He slapped the place mats on our table and our food was duly delivered which was ok. What a very strange way to run a pub? Clearly we will never go there again, which is sad as it used to be the pub to go too but really tatty and grubby now.

My wife and myself arrived just before one o’clock on a Wednesday for a bite to eat on route to Winchester for the afternoon. At the time we were the only customers along with a couple of hikers walking the Wayfarers Walk. This was our first visit to the pub and were pleasantly surprised. I had a pint of Milbury which is brewed on the premises and a jacket potato filled with prawns and side salad. My wife had a fish finger sandwich which came with side salad and chips. Both dishes were reasonably priced and would certainly visit the Milbury again. I must say the chips were something special, not your usual chip ( my wife let me try a couple of them ) and my pint of Milbury was full of flavour with a distinctive taste, certainly on a par with those top real ales. The interior certainly has character and charm which you rarely find these days. Unfortunately the kitchen is only open to 2pm and the pub closes at around 9pm dedepending on custom.

My friend and I visited this pub today for the first time in nearly 30 years. For the most part, it was just us and the landlord. He asked me if I were a grandmother (cheek - I'm only 35...ish), pretended to be cross when we turned the light on to look down the well, pretended to be even more cross when we failed to turn it off, berated us for luring in other customers, banged on about aluminium cans and priest holes, and generally made our visit an absolute joy. Shame we had to leave before the main feature of the afternoon (landlord will know what I mean). Our lunch was proper, generous pub grub, and the lady serving us was lovely. We had a great time - well worth it after all these years. Thanks!

We went for lunch - sandwiches, baguette, chips and salad. Great size, quality and price. Their own beer was really good too! We sat outside but you could equally enjoy the log fire in the bar. We were served quickly and staff polite. If we are back in the area I would be keen to visit again and try the lamb shanks or roast, the latter under £10 - bargain! The place is full of history with the old treadmill and well. Toilets fine but seem to take a very long time to re-fill . . .

Did not book, decided to go for a drive in the snow and on arrival huge open fire was very welcoming. I had roast beef which melted in your mouth, all the trimmings, excellent, my partner had the steak pie which he thoroughly enjoyed and I must say smelt delicious. All very well cooked, a good size meal and reasonably priced. Such a beautiful old traditional pub.

Congratulations to the young lady who managed the bar, at short notice, after the landlord was unexpectedly taken ill. I visited for a quick drink on her first day and 3 days later with 3 friends for lunch, by which time she was completely under control, providing a very friendly, professional and efficient level of customer service. The pub is a convenient lunch spot if walking the South Downs way, offering a warm and cosy bar with log fire, reasonable selection of beers and hearty food. It was just what we needed. Well done !!

My wife and I had lunch here last weekend while walking the South Downs Way. After 9 miles from Winchester we were pleased to come across a traditional pub with a cheeky chappy landlord. Our fishcakes and prawn salad were normal pub fare and the beer range good and well casked. While I would definitely return again, the experience was unextraordinary.

After walk along the Keats Footpath we were feeling a bit thirsty and saw this pub. Popped in and other tables food looked very appetising so took the plunge and were not disappointed! Lovely food and attentive staff - despite being December we could sit outside and did not need the heater at our table. Additionally, the pub brews ita own beer which I can recommend!
