This place is a fantastic place to celebrate a big anniversary - Golden Wedding. We were welcomed by friendly staff - very attentive and highly organised. They had prepared a long table for us all in the brasserie area. It was a perfect location with great views out over the garden and countryside. They catered for 17 of us with ease and the service was seamless. The other guests who eat at the Middle House didn’t seem to mind a bigger party going on which was a relief and the atmosphere was really relaxed. The food on the menu is so varied and everything was cooked to perfection. Thai chicken curry was gorgeous, steaks were delicious. Every guest was so happy with their choices. Loved the trio of summer puddings as a dessert. It was genuinely a fantastic night and we will be back to sample more yummy dishes. Many thanks to all.

Like anything it depends what you are looking for! If you are looking for a historic British pub with good local food then keep driving if you are looking for a wide range of food plied high (but not cheap) served in a cheap motorway service station extension on the back of a historic inn then this is for you. Lots of large parties enjoying the pile it high style of food serving, menu has something for everyone from a roast to nachos. If you are after fine food or gastro pub with local sourcing then this isn’t your restaurant. I grew up in this village and have come back to visit, definitely not the authentic thriving centre of the village pub it used to be. I got the feeling that most people were people driving for an evening out from Eastbourne or Crowborough. The original building is beautiful, unfortunately the ugliest of ugly extensions has been added to the back recently to give a school cafeteria style serving area (with amazing views). How it got past planning is a mystery to me! The purple lit feature wall goes well with the 16C carvings in the main building… Shame as this could be an amazing authentic British pub with fabulous British food, I appreciate that that is not what the owner is going for. If you like a Harvester Inn you’ll like this pub.

Is it possible, we ask ourselves, to improve upon perfection? After yesterday's hospitality it would appear so Of all the wonderful times we have enjoyed with you the latest was probably the best I understand that you greeted, while I parked the car, Pat and friends with great enthusiasm and offered them the choice of the very best table outside or inside. We chose that fantastic table in a perfect position. How clever of you Then our waitress, whose name I don't know, was excellent. In fact I did notice how fully attended all tables were and with you keeping a paternal eye on all that took place The lunch was delicious and had not risen in price unlike the local pubs which cannot match in any way the luxurious Middle House yet charge similar prices now. And the garden looked stunning and with those new (to us) urns full of plants. The Roses and Rhododendrons amongst all else were so vibrant. Everywhere looked very clean and smart and with jazzy new parasols !! All in all a great time was had by all. Pat and I are next going to, on a glorious morning, pop over for breakfast. I wonder if it would need booking? Many thanks, Nick to you, Ben and all the delightful team

This venue is do much more than the stunning exterior suggests. Inside you have some very different din8ng areas. We chose the traditional restaurant, hailing from when the building was built in 1575. The decor is frankly amazing and seems wholly authentic. Some areas are newer, not least the glass conservatory. Starter was a very unusually plated calamari, with dressing and veg garnish, beautifully presented.my partner was delighted with her liver pate. My main was a superb lamb rump with the most perfectly cooked hassleback potatoes. We then moved on to one of the most stunning desserts I have eaten in a long while. A raspberry and Rhubarb fool with candied pistachios. Perfect texture with brilliant flavours and so light too. Special mention for the non alcoholic gin cocktail which was large and well priced too. Staff were really friendly and brilliant at their jobs. Toilets clean too.

Stayed at the Middle House for a night. Our room was beautiful, a stunning four poster bed, lovely views over the high street and all very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a delicious dinner on Saturday evening. We both chose the filet steak, which was cooked to perfection. For dessert we tried the chocolate brulee and the raspberry and rhubarb fool both were delicious. On Sunday morning we enjoyed a cooked breakfast each. Before leaving for home we returned to the dining room for a Sunday roast. We both chose the roast beef, again our food was delicious, somehow we managed another dessert each, this time choosing ice cream and the maple and walnut tart. A perfect weekend with the best food, cooked and served by lovely friendly staff, with smiling faces.

We went for lunch and had another very good meal, like the dinner we had last time. The restaurant correctly checked beforehand that we were two from the same household as required by the tier rules but we noticed three tables where we wondered about the status of those guests. It shouldn't be the job of the restaurant to police any group's status but those other groups puzzled me. There was one table of 4 (middle aged mixed pairs), one other similar table of 4 more elderly and another table group of 5 young women. None of my business, but I would be surprised to learn that each group was from a single household or having a business only meeting as required.Anyway, the three course we had were excellently served and all very good: starters of lovely haddock smokie & a whitebait 'nibbles'; then mains of the Thai curry (quite spicy) & a large perfectly prepared rib eye with chunky chips; lastly a lemon posset & an ice cream all washed down by a nice S African sauvignon blanc.

Friends recommended MH and we were looking forward to going. Upon arrival we were given a cool reception and shown to our table our waitress didn’t greet us but walked past 3 times then after 10 mins offered us a drink. Menu was ok. The food was presented well but sadly most ingredients were cooked from frozen. Served with sauces in satchels like a transport cafeLighting was so bright so no ambience. Such a shame.

Me , my siblings & our partners descended on this charming large pub for a final meal out before another dreadful lockdown. We were shown to our booked table & handed our reasonably substantial menu sheet. All opted for roast, as it was Sunday- but other options remained. Prices were about £13 each , I had lamb shank which was about £18 . Veg served on side one for each couple was ample- I personally would rather more roast potatoes, and ditch the dauphinois potatoes added extra.Good atmosphere, and friendly service from,I think, family staff... we will return soon as we can

I should have realised that a long menu covering breakfast, lunch and every other edible was not a good sign. Of the two courses my other half and I had only the chicken pate passed muster. There were many shortcomings but the the most significant was the roast rump of lamb which had been left under the heat lamp for too long overcooking the meat. The saute potatoes had also stood for too long and the gravy was undistinguishable from Bisto.

We travel from Brighton now and again to eat at Middle House, it's our special place as it has never let us down with a bad experience. True to form we had a brilliant sunday lunch here last weekend, sitting in the new back dining area..well new for us as we haven't been for 3 years. The nut roast was delicious and plentiful as were the puddings, I can't resist a crumble especially the way they make theirs with the crunchy oat topping. So after not being for a while I'm pleased to say that the cosy and friendly ambience is still there despite the virus restrictions. The staff were all warmth and efficiency and my partner had a great birthday, good food, good vibes, comfortable, friendly and a good view, what's not to like?

We went for Sunday dinner and had a lovely meal, although they had run out of nut roast which my daughter had set her heart on having. The social distancing in the restaurant rooms was great. I would go back tomorrow as really enjoyed our meals. The kids meals were also very good with pieces of chicken in the nuggets which my very fussy granddaughter smashed down. My other granddaughter had the spring roll with a satey sauce which she loved. All puds were also lovely and not overly large. Thanks for a lovely evening

Surely the last two reviewers this September have made a mistake and picked the wrong place, or what? We are regular customers and were horrified when we read them. Today we yet again enjoyed the best possible lunch imaginable, together with the dozens of others who were clearly of the same opinion. The management have gone to the utmost extreme to ensure that the necessary measures have been put in place to cope admirably. All six of the staff we met were their usual cheery and professional hard working selves. Please do make up your own mind. We feel sure you will agree with all the other “Excellent” reviews.

This is hard because I did like the atmosphere but the food was very underwhelming although not overly expensive. First off was my daughters child’s meal of what was pasta, plain tomato sauce and melted cheese on top didn’t look appetising and she didn’t really like it (and she LOVES pasta). Then there was two fillet steaks (cooked well) that came with a rather bland gravy and pate on toast.... twenty minutes on the waitress embarrassingly plonked down a tray of limp and cold veggies and just said “sorry these were supposed to go with meal” and walked off. No offer of reducing the bill, free drink or dessert. Food was very boring, service pretty inadequate, wouldn’t return. Sorry

Terrific all round, really nice food, good selection for veggies and even a decent vegan option showed a great deal of thought had gone into their menu. Very well cooked, it was full last night (courtesy of the eat out to help out deal) however we weren't kept waiting at all and the food arrived fresh and hot, really couldn't fault it. Starters were a decent size and lovely, mains were fresh, tasty and plentiful and a decent selection of beers and reasonably priced wine with a good selection too. We were served by Ben (i think) who was outstanding, friendly, helpful, professional and judged our table perfectly, attentive without being annoying, thanks to you all and the extension on the back looks great and the COVID precautions were really well done and didn't spoil the evening in any way. We had 5 Sunday roasts and one had off he menu. The only criticism we would add was that the knives for each of the 5 were not sharp enough to easily cut the meat.Either the meat was tougher than they expected the knives to be able to cut or the knives were not sharp enough!Deserts were wonderful tooService was great - with personality and nothing too much trouble.Nice strong coffee.Perfect place for a family gathering.

My wife and I took our daughter and fiancé out for Sunday lunch and we all absolutely loved the experience. From the moment we walked in to the restaurant the with a roaring log fire we knew we were in for a great experience. The maitre d’ was polite and efficient as were all the serving staff. There was a good choice of starters and main courses, all reasonably priced and the food was exceptional. My daughter had Fanned Pork Tenderloin, Crackling, Pork Blade Beignet, Burnt Apple Puree, Salt Baked Celeriac, Heritage Carrots, Dauphinoise and a Masala & Grain Mustard Sauce which she declared outstanding, her fiancé and I had Fanned Rump of Local Lamb, Peas a la Francis, Dauphinoise Potato and a Thyme Scented Jus which beautifully pink and tender, and my wife had Orkney Sea Scallops with Caribbean Style Curried Sweet Potato, Cumin Carrots & Vegetable Crisps which also was brilliant. We shall certainly be back! With over 150 covers the restaurant is large, but spread out over a big area with different areas. The tables were nicely spaced apart, and service was excellent.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the Middle House. Parking is always tight in the car park behind the pub, but we managed to find a space. We arrived about 7.30pm and the bar, restaurant and brasserie was already buzzing. We had booked a table in the brasserie which is a modern addition at the back, with an outdoor area for the summer. There was a good ambience there with good-sized tables, touches of colour in the lighting and water glasses. The staff were extremely polite and helpful, attentive without being overly so.The food? It was absolutely delicious! The menu contained some old classics, such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie, but also a good selection of other more 'up market' dishes. We had no complaints at all and all 4 of us cleared our plates. We couldn’t manage another course, but there looked to be an interesting choice of desserts as well as ice cream flavours and a local cheese board. The only minor negative point was that it was quite noisy from all the chatter, but it was a Friday night and this reflected the popularity of the venue. We will definitely be returning!

I’d been to this charming old coaching inn for Sunday lunch a few times before and always really enjoyed it, so this time we’d booked a table for four of us in the restaurant for dinner on a Friday evening. I was concerned the place would be packed, it’s very popular, so the service may suffer, but how wrong I was. The staff at The Middle House are so friendly and efficient. We had drinks more or less immediately and starters soon after. My Spanish platter was pretty good, although i’d Hoped for the mini chorizos with more flavour than just the slices. I had the mixed grill, as I was very hungry after a long days work, and it was lovely. Gammon, steak, lamb, kidney and sausage, with an egg, mushroom and chips. Great service, atmosphere and reasonably priced too. It was busy but it could have been a Tuesday rather than Friday. Definitely one to visit again.

My wife had lunched here recently so we decided to have dinner. It was busy and we had to do with a table in the brasserie rather than the restaurant but that was fine. The room is good but reflects the noisy ambience. The service was amazingly quick for such a busy night. Starters of a crab risotto a whitebait were very good, immediately (and I mean immediately - starter just finished and main plates served up) followed by the mains of a chicken korma and a Thai prawn curry - both lovely. Then desserts of almond & chocolate and one with figs - again both lovely. Will be going again, despite the loud chatter ambience as, compared to other places around, it's pretty splendid.

My friend and I visited The Middle House for the first time for afternoon tea and it’s the best I’ve had. The selection of teas was amazing, the sandwiches perfect and the cakes delicious. The setting is beautiful and the service good. Honestly- give it a go!

Been going there for many years. A great afternoon tea, a little long to get served but worth the wait. This venue never disappoints. A. welcoming atmosphere, good food, large portions and good wine and beer. A few miles from home but. worth the drive.

My friend and I visited to have a sparkling Afternoon Tea to celebrate her birthday. It was absolutely delicious and perfectly presented. The sandwiches were fresh with a good variety of fillings catering for one of us being vegetarian. The cakes were beautiful and the plain/fruit scones were the perfect texture. We were given a wide selection of teas to choose from plus white or pink Prosecco. The terrace was a pretty spot to enjoy the garden and views beyond. The service was polite and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely return! Well done Middle House

Just had a very pleasant and delicious meal here. Now the top half of the Middle House is very old and very historic...but they had built on a very modern and beautiful extension out the back overlooking the lovely view....and it is very different to the other half of the building!!! I think it is great but I hope it doesn't distract from the old part of the building?? Make you own choices....we are going back for the afternoon tea...that also looked delicious. X

Lunch for five in the Brasserie. This is a new-build addition on the back of the 16th Century Middle House. All very sleek and modern and it must have been an expensive project, so why, oh why, did they not use an architect who knew something about sound insulation? All very glossy and modern but no fabrics, no curtains, no carpets.......all hard, reflective surfaces that produce a noise level that, for me, spoiled a meal of very good food.

The Sunday Roast was the best I've ever eaten! It was incredible! Fresh, tasty and cooked to perfection! The views from the garden across the Sussex countryside were stunning! Lovely atmosphere, great staff, quick service! Couldn't ask for more!

Gathering for a family celebration lunch, it was great to see this place has reinvented itself again & now manages to make several different parts of the venue attractive to different types of customer. We had a good mixture of traditional and modern (sitting in the old building but able too see & appreciate the newer, very modern part). Other diners were spoiled for choice with the covered terrace (glass walls that open up), the cosy pub area, or the pleasant pub garden overlooking the countryside.

A belated review. So professional for 40 people! Excellent service and food, canapés and drinks on the terrace, followed by perfect roast beef, desserts and cheeses, an evening to remember, highly recommended. (And Monday night is the best carvery anywhere!)

Every Monday evening they have a carvery with 4 different meats. Turkey, Beef, Ham, and Pork. You can order 1 meat (beef is slightly more expensive than the others), or all meats, so you get whatever mix you choose. This comes with the best potatoes (roast and dauphinois) as well as a choice of gravys. Add vegatables and you have a great main course. To start you have a choice of salads of all sorts, but don't go too heavy on the starter as its a big meal! A good evening. You can eat in the bar without a reservation or book and eat the same fare in the restaurant. ... and of course they serve Harveys :)

We were lucky enough to fill a cancellation booking at an obviously popular place. We were greeted by a friendly team of staff and sat under an awning on a very pretty terrace with far reaching views across the Sussex countryside. An unusual selection of teas was the first decision and then in which order to eat the delicious display of sandwiches, scones and cakes! We will definitely be returning to Mayfield.

Have eaten here twice recently - for dinner and lunch. On both occasions everything has been superb. Good menu with excellent choice of dishes all freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Service, provided by young Antipodean waitresses, has been first class. Definitely intend to make this place a regular port of call.

We have always loved The Middle House. It’s our favourite restaurant for family celebrations, so we thought we’d try an afternoon tea for a change.

This was as near to perfection as any establishment could ever achieve. Spoilt for choice by the variety of teas available for your individual pot. Sandwiches were fresh and delicious. The plain and fruit scones were light, warm and crispy. Along with the dish of cream you have three flavours of jam. As for the four cakes each, descriptions defy. They simply melt in your mouth. We had to give in though and make use of the box they provide to take some home to enjoy later. The staff are all very cheerful and most efficient. An afternoon to remember and to relive in the not too distant future.

We have been eating here for nearly 30 years and the food has always been (and still is) excellent. Although the old building has remained relatively untouched there has been an extension added in recent years at the back, facing out onto the garden and wonderful views.

As soon as we walked in it was apparent that no one was interested in serving or even talking to us. The staff behind looked like they’d just lost loved ones. After finally being served, we waited 25 mins for our starters, Food was great.

Spent a very nice evening here. We was welcomed by a lovely roaring fire. The food is very good and couldn't fault it. There is a good variety on the menu including children's menu. Good service with friendly polite staff. Only thing I could find wrong was when you leave at night there are no lights outside so you can not see a thing including the steps once your out the door which to me is quite dangerous.

Brilliant new proprietors from March 2024 with very high standards. So ignore 2023 reviews and the food and other pics are out of date. The accommodation area is not open yet as major refurb in progress. I went up for a music night in July and I am going up this week to sample the pub menu, and will certainly be booking ahead as soon as the hotel part does open, as I don’t drive, so a relaxing visit to Wadhurst for me, require a stop over. I am confident this team’s famous high standards will transform this historic building into a classy stay. The kitchen is entirely new, state of the art, and sparkling and immaculate, ( I was given a tour ) and I am looking forward to traveling to Wadhurst now they are serving food, as I know this chefs food is top notch. And with the welcoming bar team, I will feel comfortable and looked after. As a fussy woman who is used to dining alone, or taking others to dine in top establishments around the foodie cities of Brighton, Malaga and Paris, I have a high standard for hospitality and food. The new proprietors at the Greyhound are warm and welcoming and have high standards of hygiene and hospitality, I know this from their other ventures, I can’t wait to eventually stay over and enjoy the village of Wadhurst when the hotel part opens. Until then I am taking the bus up from Brighton this week to sample the new pub menu, as I know the chef is first class, and with such a good hospitality team I can confidently invite a party of people knowing they will be happy and looked after. On the new menu I will report my findings in detail!

I have cycled past here so very very often and never tried the cafe. I should have read the reviews on here first! I stopped for a latte and a cake and the guy working here I am sure does not drink coffee. He was so out of his depth with the coffee machine I ended up with just hot milk!! In the old adage “You only get one chance to make a good first impression” Sorry but this time you failed. Yelling at me when I left that I could not go down and look at the lake as I might upset the fishermen having earlier told me there were no fishermen was not worth debating either. In short if you fish here use the cafe, if you are passing…… Keep on passing.
