As a hauler who travels frequently, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting The Middle Bell in Barton Under Needwood several times since its takeover in March. Each visit has been a delightful experience! The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the owners truly bring the place to life with their enthusiasm and friendliness. It’s clear they are passionate about creating a welcoming atmosphere for all their guests. Now, let’s talk about the food! The pizzas here are absolutely delicious—crispy crust, fresh toppings, and bursting with flavor. I recently tried the belly pork, and it was nothing short of delightful. Cooked to perfection, it was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, making it one of the best dishes I’ve enjoyed in a while. The service is consistently great as well. The staff are attentive and make sure your dining experience is enjoyable from start to finish. I highly recommend The Middle Bell for anyone in the area, whether you're a local or just passing through. It’s a gem that deserves recognition, and I look forward to many more visits in the future!

We have just returned from lunch here, and I wanted to highlight a couple of things. Don’t go if you or any of your party have any Allergies or Intolerances. There is a distinct lack of communication between ordering and stating a member of your party had Allergies and the kitchen then knowing or receiving the instructions. A child’s meal arrived containing milk, we are very careful and had asked beforehand if this item contained milk. This was swiftly taken care of by the staff who realised and another meal was freshly prepared. Another problem was the attitude of the manager whom I found very defensive and obviously did not like any form of complaining or criticism. On another note the food was lovely and all the other staff pleasant.

After hearing good reports we decided to go with friends for a Sunday roast. Such a disappointment and won’t be going back for a while. Service was very slow and we had to ask how long before our mains would appear resulting in an hour wait for mains after starters . When the mains did arrive one of the meals had to be sent back for replacement as the supposed roast beef looked more like a boiled old string vest. Thankfully a replacement meal arrived promptly. Was very surprised to hear the waitress say it was a supplier of the meat issue as we know the meat supplier and his reputation is second to none. When we asked for the bill the meal was not charged for which at least demonstrated some customer service however our overall experience means we won’t be visiting again for some time.

The new management has made a phenomenal difference at The Middle Bell, bringing it back on the map as one of the best pubs in Barton under Needwood. The pub has returned to its roots, serving as a fantastic village pub for the local community while also being a destination worth traveling to for its outstanding food and service. During the recent England games, they provided free food at halftime. This wasn't just a snack or a pack of crisps, but a genuine feast, reminiscent of the feeding of the 5,000 football fans—a fantastic gesture that was greatly appreciated by all who enjoyed the game and of course the food...! The new management has truly perfected the formula for a great pub, earning a well-deserved 5-star rating from me. The Middle Bell is highly recommended and a standout among the great pubs in Barton under Needwood.

They don't need the publicity however. 😂 We don't know the local area but believe the middle bell has recently returned after being closed. The food was hearty and healthy (very large salad portions), half roast chicken could have done with a Gravy but the kids were happy and the ham terrine well seasoned. Good stop for any tourists passing through or staying near by such as wychnor.

Have been in for a drink since the new owners have taken over really nice. We decided to go with friends for a meal, so disappointed !! on arrival at our table the young lady taking the orders said I'd better tell you what we haven't got No pizzas at all and five other dishes of the main menu ??? this pub is known for pizza it has a pizza oven. We ordered two burgers, fish & chips & chicken and bacon sandwich, My husband asked if two of the dishes could served with tipple cook fries instead of skin on chips the waitress who had written nothing down said she would tell the kitchen. The meals arrived and yes you've guessed the chips all came with skins on, the waitress asked if everything was OK and my husband said no we had asked for tipple cooked chips, she said I asked the kitchen they said no!! and more or less what could she do about it "with hand gesture's" (did she not think to come and tell us that my husband would not have had chips at all. The other meal's the chicken burger, chicken was over cooked and hard around the edge, the fish was dry the batter was over cooked in the fryer to long. My meal however was nice. To finish we found the waitresses attitude very unprofessional every time she came to our table. What a shame !!!!

Went for a meal with a friend for her last night before heading home to New Zealand. I’d checked the menu online before going as I have allergies so have to be careful what I eat. Really disappointed to learn on arrival that the now only serve either burgers or pizza. I had a bread allergy with left me no option at all. I have so settle for a side order of katsu dirty fries. When they finally came out they looked more like cat s**t dirty fries. Thankfully they tasted slightly better than they looked. My wife and friend shared a pizza with a side of fries each although curly fries were bought out. Not worth arguing given the time is took for the food to come out in the first place. The drink were poor. The wine was far from chilled and the glass of coke was flat. The place was full of rude and rowdy youths with the staff did have to have a word with. The staff we good and clearly had a difficult job. No fault with the service. Really disappointing meal and will not be coming back any time soon.

We booked a table for Boxing Day lunch for six of us after a walk. I had heard many good things about The Bell since DBC had taken over and stories great service from the team. Now before I write this, I fully understand it had been a busy Christmas Eve which was somewhat unexpected it seems as there were quite a few lines of beer sold out already on Christmas Day when we popped in for a pint. However… Had we not been super hungry I wouldn’t have been able to power through the atrocious burger that I was served. I ordered The Bell Burger aka The Hell Burger, which sounded lovely when read on the menu, but it was utterly dire. The menu stated lettuce and pickles, of which there were none and the bun was harder than Tyson Fury’s uppercut. The same went for my mates burger and also my wife’s sliders which were dry as a bone. Just poor in general on the burger front, Especially not telling us they were out of greenery for the burger before ordering and serving it without anyway! Positives were the fries, they were very tasty and my mate said his Pork Belly dish was decent if not slightly salty. The manager let us have some discount with the Blue Light scheme which knocked one of the meals off the bill which was some compensation I suppose. I usually mention if there is a problem with food but we were all ravenous so decided against it on the day. Living in Birmingham you’re spoilt with choice for top class burgers so it was a shame to not get that standard in the village. The service was very good though and staff super friendly so I would give The Bell a second chance when not so jaded post-Christmas rush.

Came here as a second choice as first became unavailable. It will be first choice from now on. The new management has revamped with taste and flair. The menu is full of choices that reflect the diverse clientele a gastronomic pub attracts. Yesterday a group of seven of us tried seven different meals from the smokehouse style based choices from the week day menu and each was cooked well and full of flavour. So good in fact that my fella and I decided to ask if we could squeeze in for Sunday lunch. The Sunday menu still offers a smaller range of the weekday menu but also a large selection of roast dinners. I had the broccoli wellington and Nige had the turkey. All with a lovely selection of veg and the most amazing gravy. The staff are friendly and helpful and we will certainly be back. Soon!

We had a late check in at our booked country club and thought it a good idea to reserve somewhere to eat as it was close to dinner time after arriving. On getting there a large table was ready for us with the host name on a lit display. We sat and ordered at the bar. Our drinks arrived shortly afterwards by a very friendly service member (didn’t get her name, pink hair, attractive). The two kids meals came straight after showing that they prioritise kids to keeps them occupied and then the rest followed. I think we all ordered something different and our party of eight really enjoyed their meal - from classic fish and chips to my ‘big popa’ burger it all looked and tasted great. We didn’t have time to stay for dessert as night was falling, we’re city folk not used to driving narrow country lanes at night. As we left the same pink-haired lady bid us farewell and smiled. It was a lovely stop for us and set the tone for our stay. Very cosy atmosphere with people having a good jolly in each corner, at one point I saw a dog sleeping on the floor by the bar! I intend to come back to the country club and will make ‘the middle bell’ my first eating stop next time and I encourage others in the area to visit!

Called in The Middle Bell on Friday 15th July after an 8 mile walk with friends. Staff were super friendly and welcomed us in. I asked if they had either soya or oat milk for a cup of tea. They didn’t have any but the barman serving offered to pop across to the local co-op to get some. Also my husband ordered a pint of Weston’s Vintage Cider which the barman commented he’d be lucky if he could fill the pint glass - I’m guessing it was at the end of the barrel. When my husband took a few sips it was flat. He mentioned it at the bar and the barman offered to replace it with a different cider which was much more lively and refreshing. The menu had a good range of vegan and veggie options but on this occasion I only had the triple cooked chips - which were delicious. We were most impressed with the level of service and customer focus- thank you to the staff.

We've see many owners come and go over the years, some brilliant some terrible but it appears that the Derby Brewing Company led team have now 'got their mojo'. My son (6) and I nipped in for dinner last night and I have to say it was excellent. He ordered the kid's fish fingers and chips and I had the Buffalo Chicken burger as it was 'burger night'. Usually a kids meal is some frozen, breaded 'protein source' and I have to admit I wasn't really expecting much more of a chicken burger. My son, asked for the triple cooked chips instead of fries and I was amazed....actual triple cooked (not cooked once before McCains freeze them and then cooked in two temperatures of oil) Heston style original triple cooked sticks of potato perfection. Honestly this is the first time I've had true triple cooked chips, done as they should be outside of a Michelin starred pub, well done! He ate loads of the proper, homemade battered fresh fish 'fingers' which were more like large fillets and even all the peas! My chicken burger was honestly brilliant, I spend a lot of time in America and always find anything in the uk that's branded as 'buffalo' style complete dross, usually a sweet sticky mess, lacking any crunch as it's been doused in sweet chilli based BBQ sauce of some form. This was an honest buffalo sauce, Frank's style with heat and sourness...anchor bar Buffalo NY wings, not quite, but pretty damn good for a pub in Staffordshire! Maybe this direction of really well executed smokehouse style could be a differentiator in a saturated market of "good pub grub"! We'll be dining here more often that's for sure, coupled with the brilliant Derby company ales, some excellent vintage dry cider, (not foreign muck, sweeter than lemonade, served with ice, or stuff flavoured with dragon fruit and jasmine or some other ungodly combo) p.s why are people buying Swedish or New Zealand branded cider?...last time I checked we're pretty good at Apples in the UK! sorry rant over.... I appreciate Pizza’s aren’t usually the most exciting item on any menu, yet the Vegan pizza’s I’ve had at The Middle Bell were amazing…!! I can’t say enough good things about how tasty they are. Many establishments are lazy when it comes to Vegan options churning out the same old butternut squash or sweet potato options which quite simply bore me as zero imagination. The chef Chris has most definitely upped the game with the Vegan pizza, which can be modified to suit an individual taste, the only problem is as they are that good I want to now live on them as part of my daily food intake. Well done Middle Bell team for making this Vegan very happy.

Staying nearby at Wychnor Park, this pub was recommended and easy to find at the center of the village (approximately a 5-10 minute drive). Directly across the street from the Co-Op (convenient for gathering items for self-catering property). Easy parking. Very friendly and attentive service,...

This used to be one of the decent pubs in the village, sadly no longer. Went on Friday night for dinner. Firstly far too noisy, to sit and chat, have to shout at each other. Service was very very slow. Food was nothing to write...

Visited the bell for a light lunch. We ordered the lamb koftas & Korean chicken lollipops. Both were delicious and cooked to a high standard. Will recommend. The service was also A+ with friendly smiling service. Lovely lunch. Be back soon

We decided to pop in for lunch, has we had been before and menu was really good. But this time had changed menu and it was very poor. So we finished drinks and decided to leave. Very disappointing.

Pros: Portion size, taste, setting and ambience, service. Prawn, tomato and spinach risotto was very tasty. Cons: Can be noisy, chips were very well cooked - almost too much. Rice Pudding Crème Brûlée was simply rice pudding without the crème brûlée. Overall, reasonably priced with...

Ok the venue was nice with a log fire. This gave a homely rustic feel to the pub.It was bright and the quirky mix of mis matched furniture added character. The men's toilets clean and fresh, staff polite and friendly. We had fish and chips with mushy peas plus drinks. We thought the portions were small and the chips a little over done. I know it was mini but for the price not sure it was value for money. The food was ok aside from the pizza was a bit dry but crumble was different but nice. On the whole venue was nice but food maybe needs stepping up a bit. Might re visit in the future but not sure.

Really lovely sunday lunch and my 3 grandchildren were more than happy with their huge battered fish fingers. Staff were happy and courteous. However I was disappointed to see that there were only 2 other tables of diners at peak time. I thoroughly recommend this pub and hope that they have a good Christmas

Was really nice food and ale. Initially we had a problem with slow service but quite unsolicited the staff realised and offered us free drinks or desserts. Any establishment can make a mistake, it's what you do about it that matters and they were excellent. Will return the next time we're in the area

Visited here for a family lunch, the pub itself was lovely, however the menu was quite limited. The service could be improved and food was underwhelming. One of the meals was forgotten, but this item was taken off the bill. Staff were friendly but overall the lunch took almost three hours, from ordering to paying, even though the pub was practically empty. This pub has great potential, if the above could be improved.

The menu has changed which is good, however when coming you have to call every time to ensure they are actually serving food, as been turned away a couple of times as they were not serving food Anyway we went in May 2023, the food was fantastic as usual, all home cooked, absolutely top notch. The Bangor burger has changed and is even bigger, in fact it defeated me I could not eat it Very reasonable on the prices, overall excellent and will come back time and time again

Sunday lunch was fabulous. Really tasty, best I’ve had in a very long time. The pub looks nothing from the outside, so we visited based on good Trip Advisor reviews and weren’t disappointed. Will definitely return. Price was excellent value for money.
