Had the special trio of fish and seasonal veg. ( Brussels sprouts!!) dish over cooked, Brussels sprouts soggy and hassle back potatoes soft and spongy, so we put it down to experience and ordered apple tart and ice cream. The pastry was in cooked and inedible , we spoke to staff who said meals were cooked as per so many minutes??! Cooking is a science , you don’t just cook for minutes specified . You cook, taste , season , reduce etc . Wine was plonked on the table in opened and we weren’t asked to taste and after putting deserts down no one asked us if we wanted coffee . Service poor at best . I wouldn’t go back , despite in the past enjoying food there. It was b…y dreadful

I joined a friend today for lunch here in this beautiful period pub/ restaurant. We enjoyed the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere of the dining room, And would personally like to thank Beth for her patience, understanding and excellent service throughout our visit. The lunchtime menu was varied, and our choices of food were of good quality. Service from all staff was excellent. We find the Dog and Partridge is always worth the drive out of town to enjoy a relaxed and pleasant lunch or evening meal, and importantly, parking is never a problem in the large car park at the rear of the building. Thank you Beth.

I run a local re-enactment group - every year we look for a venue to celebrate Burns Night we wear full scottish period clothing. Our group have visited in the past and this year voted that we return. Our table was placed in an area where we were able to talk easily to one another and where our mode of dress was not stared at by the other diners - although we are used to being stared at, sometimes the interruptions, when we are dining can be invasive, however here we were respectfully left alone. The service was brilliant too, the young ladies serving us were all polite and made us all feel comfortable. Next year there won't be a need to vote, our members have already decided we will be returning.

Nice pub, good friendly service. We’ve had good food in the past. The food tonight was way short of acceptable (overcooked) and the meat was inedible, which needs feedback to the kitchen. I'd like to try more of the menu but what I have tried is very nice, especially the steak and ale pie which is the best pub pie I've ever had. I would not recommend this establishment at all. We didn’t even stay for the service as first impressions were not good. Pre-booked a table online through the week. Arrived on the premises on time and waited by the screen/till for 10 minutes before being spoken to or seen to, to be seated. When someone came around to seat us, the table wasn’t ready with a high chair as requested in the booking. We were seated and the waitress said she’ll let us settle and be back for a drinks order. 25 minutes later we realised she’s not coming back, so we decided to leave. The food didn’t look great upon seeing staff waiting at the bar with customers food, wondering where they should be.. I think we dodged a bullet. We only tried as we had a gift card to use, but it didn’t seem to be worth the hassle. We left and told the lady on the way out we’re leaving as no one had come to serve us. She apologised but didn’t seem overly concerned. The place wasn’t busy. The customers were looking around at their table for attention from staff we noticed whilst waiting. We came for Sunday lunch and was told at 15:00 that there was no pork available? 15:00 in the afternoon? Not really good enough. And to the chap walking out of the kitchen talking to his colleague saying “No more walk-ins, I mean it!” Wasn’t very welcoming.

The place is a complete joke, the service is diabolical, the staff have no idea what they're doing so clearly management are at fault here!!! The attitude of the staff was as if they couldn't care less, the assistant Mangager had not cot a clue what was going on and just blamed the other staff. Tastless roasters, pigs in blankets that were pretty awful because the sausages were terrible and the bacon was just about cooked, rush job because of quantity maybe. Turkey was fine . pudding was a complete joke .the amount was an insult for the price and the sauce was in the smallest pot possible. The staff were really nice on arrival and throughout the whole time but other than that not a great experience. All of our starters- Crispy Squid, Chicken Strips and Tiger Prawns - were pretty bland. I had a steak which was really gristly, pale and luke warm. The beef dripping sauce was cold. My son had a "slow cooked" beef rib which had not been slow cooked very well, as the fat had not been cooked off at all. It went to the dog in the end. The Lentil Wellington my wife had was really lacking any filling and the veg felt reheated. The beef cheeks my daughter had were really nice though. It's a lovely building with good staff. It would be top notch if they got the food right.

I was recommended this pub for food by a local, and what a treat it was. The Sunday roast was the best I’ve ever eaten out in a pub, ever! The kids loved their small roasts too. Come with pigs in blankets, lots of veg and even cheesy leaks which were delicious. The atmosphere was heaving, very busy and now I know why. It’s a proper country pub vibe, cosy with real fires and as we were leaving a live band was starting. I don’t think pubs get much better than this to be honest, and the bill was surprisingly cheap for six people at £104. Parking is tight and WiFi/ signal for the kids was poor, but that can both be understood for its location. Will be back to visit again very soon.

Got our meals two adults pork loin supposed to have cracking (the other adults meal and child’s meal was ok apart from they brought beans not garden peas with the child’s steak). Arrived no crackling and only one vegetable. When I enquired they simply said oh yep they should have said when you ordered. When I asked for pudding menu, they waited ten minutes. So I went to the bar to pay the bill. I was greeted at the bar with a “be with you shortly”. When I did get someone’s attention to pay the bill they simply printed it off and presented me with all it. I asked are you not going to ask if our meal was ok? She said ok how was your meal? When I told her some of the issues she said sorry about that. Nothing else.

Pretty shocking Sunday roast. A pretty pricey roast for the area and absolutely nothing to write home about. Staff were friendly but not attentive. Several times had to get up and ask for someone to bring horseradish, to take a drinks order, to clear plates, to bring the bill. The portion of meat was small and overdone. The Yorkshire pudding (if homemade) is sad. The roast potatoes are actually chipped up potatoes. I had to ask to bring some more as I was insulted that, putting my chips all together, I had less than one roast potato. As a table, we were brought a jug of ‘extra’ gravy. I’m not sure where the ‘extra’ came from as we hadn’t been given any to begin with. And one jug between a table with a dinner as dry as that was quite poor. We were seated in a dark corner despite the fact there was plenty of space in the light. We eventually asked to move to a free table and, to their credit, the staff did allow us to move. To top it all off, this was a ‘birthday’ meal. This was my Nanna’s treat and it was just pretty bad all round. I would have complained (again) had it been possible to get the staff’s attention.

Loved it. Stayed after a nearby function. Lovely room. Banging breakfast and a bargain. What's not to love.

My wife ordered grilled sage butternut squash steak, flat field mushroom, roasted onion, spiced sweet potatoes, charred courgette, garden peas and grilled tomato. Served with chips and balsamic gravy It arrived with no ‘flat mushroom’ or ‘tomato’. Having questioned as to there whereabouts, we were told they had no mushrooms, yet they never told us this at the point of ordering, hoping perhaps we wouldn’t spot the missing items. Halfway through the meal a tomato was found and delivered to the table.

In the middle of our 5-hour road trip, all five of us stopped for lunch. The food was tasty, the service was friendly, and there was parking! We ate outside in a shaded area.

Found this when looking for somewhere to eat after visiting NEC for antique arms fair . Rang ahead to book a table for 2 and our golden retriever Charlie. Not a problem for the very welcoming staff . Great selection on menu and the food was superb , lovely atmosphere , good value for money .

The menu has changed which is good, however when coming you have to call every time to ensure they are actually serving food, as been turned away a couple of times as they were not serving food Anyway we went in May 2023, the food was fantastic as usual, all home cooked, absolutely top notch. The Bangor burger has changed and is even bigger, in fact it defeated me I could not eat it Very reasonable on the prices, overall excellent and will come back time and time again

Waited over 1 hour for food watched 3/4 other tables come in and order and be served and finished their meal and leave while we were still waiting for ours. After 1 hour 15 minutes went to bar asked why taking so long, told ours is next out as it’s busy and hectic but it was fairly quiet with most people only drinking and not eating, watched 4 more orders come out while still waiting. 90 minutes+ later our food arrives around 3pm we have tea reservations elsewhere for 5:30 which we wasn’t hungry for due to late meals. When the food arrived the chicken was cold, chips were cold and wrap was crispy like it had been sitting for a hour, daughter said mash and beans were cold and refused to eat. Sauce with chicken basket smallest blob. We eat at Wetherspoons multiple times a week but will be avoiding this one due to bad experience.

Being back in Burton for another pub crawl we thought we would look this place up again for probably the last time as it is due to close at the end of October in an act of complete vandalism by Molson Coors, showing a total lack of respect for brewing history by planning to redevelop the site for offices. Have these people no morals or respect? Clearly not. As for the tap room and restaurant itself, it’s a fairly sterile corporate affair but at least the hanging pub signs in the restaurant section does try and give it a bit of character. And in my experience the bar staff serving behind the bar have always given the impression that they are suffering for their profession and would rather be somewhere else. Although cannot comment on the food as we have never eaten here and again were only here for the tap bar bit, but can certainly pass judgement on the ale and in that respect the beer was very good, but then you would expect it to be as it is the official tap bar for the Heritage Brewery, embedded in the National Brewery Centre next door, and they don’t have to travel very far. The Tap bar has six hand pumps and for our visit these were dispensing the Heritage Brewery Masterpiece IPA, Heritage Gold, Charrington IPA and Oatmeal Stout as well as Draught Bass and Elgood black dog on as a guest. I went for the Oatmeal Stout. It is not one of the best tap rooms I have ever visited, but it is probably one of the most famous, so I will be very sad to see it go, if this act of vandalism is allowed to proceed by the local council and the local MP. If it is then the very soul of Burton on Trent will go with it.
