This lovely cafe sits on the market square in an ancient black and white building, which also hosts an antique centre. The food was all properly home made, arrived piping hot, in generous portions and was very delicious. I had a hunk of goats cheese and red pepper quiche, with coleslaw, potato salad which came with delicious fresh salad in a yummy dressing. My husband opted for the baked potato with cheese, beans and salad. The food was amazing value and the service lovely. Simple food done well - perfect for lunchtime. We will definitely return.

This is a review for the antique centre which is a part of the restaurant/cafe building. We have been to the antique centre for many years and recently have considered moving to Leominster because the town is a delight, especially the antique shops, The Merchant's house being our favourite. However, not so any more. The prices in the centre have skyrocketed to simply stupid amounts! £11 for a ragged, torn vintage needle holder made of cardboard with scrappy felt inside and a few needles, £135 for a women's coat, £28 for nearly every dress regardless of quality or age, £7 for a seriously used t-towel, £11 for others.......what are they thinking???? This is an area that we used to love, filled with fabrics, sewing and knitting bits and bobs (you know, the sort of sewing supplies you inherit from a mum who has passed away), needlework items, women's clothing, costume jewellery, bags, fabric hankies, vintage gloves etc etc that has now completely let the entire shop down by it's high prices......we walked out in disgust and sadly will say goodbye to Leominster for good! Save youself some bother and stop in at the cafe but give the antiques a miss....go to the charity shops in the local area and you can pick up some of the same items for next to nothing...just keep your eyes open and be prepared to rummage around.

Friendly and helpful staff, who do their utmost to help. It's dog friendly and breakfast selection was good and delicious. The experience was slightly blighted by some rude and arrogant customers who treated the waitress like their personal slave, and felt they had priority over all other customers. Visited for a warming snack on a cold, wet day. Delicious, very hot soup and a wonderful cheese scone (cheese all thorough, not just on top). Polite staff who listened to what we wanted and how. The only reason for less than 5 stars is that the restaurant was not as warm as we would have liked.

A sign for bacon sandwiches lured me inside this attractive old timbered building, part tearooms and part antiques emporium. My sandwich was generous with nicely-cooked bacon, but the sliced brown bread was a bit dry and not visially appealing. However, my cappuccino had flavour as well as froth, so the breakfast experience was satisfactory. Once finished, I popped upstairs to browse among the multiple rooms of curios, bric-a-brac, vintage clothing and fabrics, and antiques (as it seems do most new customers) This added interest to my visit, as it's like a trip down memory lane. Might try the scones instead, next time I'm in Leominster.

We stopped here for a tea/coffee and cake and it was really lovely. The black & white building is off the market square and there is a beautiful courtyard at the back, which is a nice peaceful retreat to sit and relax whilst you eat/drink. The lady who served us was really friendly and made recommendations about the menu, which was helpful, including telling us about a gluten free ginger cake which wasn’t listed, which I decided to try and it was very nice. Others in our group had toasted tea-cakes which they said were delicious as they said they had a nice hint of spice, which often nowadays you do not get.

But as we were handed the menus we were told of the pie of the day, which turned out to be leek and chicken. Having our dog with us meant we didn't use the indoor cafe tables, but were comfortably seated under an expansive awning offering shade from the sun and shelter from rain. We visited Leominster on a drizzly Wednesday in February. We had passed this cafe by last visit as menu outside seems basic i.e soup, sandwiches, jacket potatoes, etc but today we were on the hunt for a warming soup so went to Merchant's aqbout 1.30pm. 2 soups were listed on the specials board, brocoli and ? and leek & potato , my husband and I went for the latter. Having got into cheese scones in the past year we asked if there were any and the waitress offered us the option to swap the bread accompanying the bread with the cheese scone which we went for. We did not have to wait long for the home-made soup which was very hearty and scrumptious and sprinkled with croutons. The cheese scones we probably the best we have ever had light, warm, moist and proper cheesy so you could see the bits of melted cheese once the scone was cut ( hate it when places skimp on the cheese inside just putting a bit on top) When we had finished we felt satisfyingly full and better prepared to face the weather. We can really recommend this cafe

Beautiful building which is now a little cafe. The menu is very limited which isn't such a bad thing as long as what is on offer is decent. The guy who took our order had the personality of a paper clip. He wasn't welcoming and perhaps would be better suited to the cellar as opposed to front of house. The coffee was really good and the soup was nice and hot although under seasoned. When the waitress arrived she also was unfriendly and gave the impression she was not happy to be there ! When our food arrived it was plonked on the table by the aforementioned gentleman who walked off without asking if we required salt pepper or any sauces. One of the frustrations of the TripAdvisor rating system is that there is no rating between average and very good. In truth the Merchant House is better than average, but not good enough to be rated very good. The building is superb and there is also a very nice garden at the back for use on warmer days. The service is fine, but not outstanding ( although the owner is always helpful and accommodating). They use a lot of good quality local ingredients in the food which is always tasty. If I was to cavill it would be to say that whilst better than average, the Merchant House doesn't go the extra step which would make them really stand out. Also although by no means expensive, the bill for a light lunch for two was more than £5 more expensive than the Ludlow Food Centre Café where I ate the next day, and the food at the Food Centre was infinitely better quality.

We had afternoon tea there on Saturday and it was really nice. Scones were beautiful warm and well made and the service was friendly and warm. Then we browsed the shop made some small purchases and the lady who served us was so nice and welcoming. The whole experience was a very good one and I will be going back as soon as I can.

Helpful staff, with a small but adequate menu. The special soup was excellent. lovingly restored interior emphasises the age of the building, but clean and modern standards. A great place for a light lunch or tea and cakes, prices reasonable too.

We popped in at lunch time but really were not looking for lunch. Despite an excellent menu we actually plumped for a very early cream tea and despite the hour not a word was said and the scones were warmed and the jam was scrumptious. What a joy, we shall return again to do justice to the lunch menu, and the cost was very reasonable indeed! Perfect.

Had lunch in the delightful courtyard after a recommendation from one of the market traders (It was a Friday). Pretty wide menu, we sat near the kitchen and could hear the conversations between servers and chef, this was unusual and instructive, they were being very careful to follow guests requests for some pretty fussy details. It all sounded very professional and precise. We had fresh juice, good filter coffe with top-ups included, one baked potato with a tasty dressing, and a very good ham baguette. Doesn't sound exciting, a ham baguette, but it was very large, very fresh, and stuffed with thick sliced lovely ham and dressed with a very good salad.IIncluding a large bottle of mineral water we paid under £20, which is not cheap for what is essentially a posh cafe, but we felt we'd had good value and would be happy to go again. Judging from the conversations overheard during our meal it was clear that everyone was really pleased with both their food and the surroundings, on a hot day the courtyard was a beautiful place to linger.

Tucked away in the corner of Corn Square, in the market-town of Leominster (with it's 1400 year history) is this little gem of an eatery and antiques shop combined.3 of us met for lunch and we were in-turn met with great hospitality by the team. Good food, coffee, tea and much pleasantness ensued. My good lady and I favoured the beer-batt ered haddock and chips, whilst our esteemed guest ordered the pork and shallot paté. These were enjoyed sufficiently to convince us to order desserts and overrun or car-prattling time! Made in-house and whilst certainly not cheap, the quality was more than high enough to represent value. Especially when coupled with competent and friendly service. The only down-side is the inability to pay by card. Do not let this dissuade you; arrive with cash, or take advantage of the ATM immediately outside their venue. Recommended :)

If you don't fancy the specials which are always good, go for the pie. Chicken or the steak and ale. Had lunch 20+ times and always good.

I have eaten here a couple of times as a favourite place to take visiting guests. I like the non pretentious feel of the restaurant. Whatever food you order you are likely to get a great portion at a reasonable price. After eating it is worth popping upstairs to view some of the nic nacs on display in the antiques floor.

i have lived in near leominster since 2007 and up until summer last year have walked past the merchant house 100's of time, it always looks a little twee. it is but in a good way.i dropped in for lunch on a sunny day and sat in the courtyard, ham, egg and chips.thick locally cured ham was fantastic, eggs as fresh as they could be and crispy fluffy chips, a cup of coffee with afree top up cost about £7 brilliant. since then i have started going for a full english every other saturday morning, £5 2 rashers of thick good quality bacon, a coulpe of sausages from the local butcher, perfectly grilled tomato with the core removed, very fresh fried egg and mushrooms fried in the bacon fat and 2 thick slices of toast.its like being at your grannies house, all feels well with the world. the bacon is crisp, the sausages are normally very well done (but i like them like that) its a little bit slow but they cook it all fresh, so it should be a little bit slow, its not macdonalds, food tastes like it should.when you have finished eating you can have a potter around the antiques upstairs. if you want to switch your brain off for an hours and slip back into the sedate pace of the 60's give it a vist.

Booked an evening meal whilst staying in log cabin near by. Large portions of home cooked food, quick service and friendly and helpful staff. Reasonably priced, in fact we were surprised and were expecting to pay more for the quality. The decor is lovely as well, quite cozy on an autumn evening. Will definitely return next time we are in the area

Just dropped in on spec for a lunchtime meal. Excellent service, very friendly staff, delicious food and great value. As of October 2024 you'll get a good sized meal for about a tenner. Good choice of ales etc. Location is perfect for visiting the cathedral and city. If you need an EV charger there's one about 100 meters up the road.

Very nice venue in an idyllic bit of Herefordshire, very close to the Wye. The pub opened specially for our group of around 20 (not normally open on winter Tuesdays) and the food was excellent. Alas our hostess Katie had a medical emergency that day and no desserts were on offer, but we will definitely return.
