The Meating Room used to be a great option for a beer and a burger in St Albans but they've now gone 'takeaway only' and the old restaurant is being used a storage area/collection point. The problem is that there's no way of knowing this from looking at their website or Trip Advisor page which is really poor and must have led to a lot of disappointed customers like us. We turned up having purchased beers specifically (as it was always BYOB) only to be turned away and told they're now takeaway only. Perhaps they should consider moving to larger premises and reverting to the old setup which was much better in my opinion.

Wanted to eat here but when we arrived we found the eat in section has been removed and it's take-away only now.

Was disappointed to find out this is take-away only. No mention of this on their website. In fact there's even an option to book a table. But when we arrived all the chairs are gone and the tables are being used for storage.

Be wary of the positive reviews. Whilst I haven't eaten here in years and it was generally excellent when I did eat here (I would've rated it 5 stars at the time) since then, it has come to my attention that over the years they shut down and reopened due to hygiene related issues. Not a great sign. I was genuinely surprised to hear this but when checking on the Food Standards Agency website, my suspicions were confirmed that they are rated 3/5 for their hygiene which tells me there is definitely something wrong. This rating from the FSA is as of August 2022, so one would hope things have improved since then. But I will still leave this review simply to make people aware that the hygiene of this establishment may not be up to scratch - especially when dealing with meat based ingredients.

Love the food here but can never eat it as they are never open till when they say they are, twice now we’ve tried ordering and they’ve turned us away. We went at 9pm ( before 9:30pm when it states it shuts on google)and the other we called at 8:45 and they wouldn’t answer the phone multiple times. Just a little annoying. Maybe change the times you shut on google if you’re not going to take orders later then a certain time!

Great food. I have ordered loads of times from this place. Only fault is that they appear to have changed the wings over the last few weeks. This is a real shame as the old ones were genius.

I am never ordering from this place again. Instead of a well done burger they delivered raw one. It was fully red inside! The worst part - it happened to me a second time. First time absolutely the same thing happened to me half a year ago, I stupidly decided to give them another chance. Never again!

Ordered a cheese burger last week, came without the cheese. Only noticed when I got home. A few days later ordered the classic, with gherkin, paid extra and got no gherkin. Tonight ordered the classic burger and got a halloumi and mushroom vegetarian burger. Again didn't think to check while picking up. Standards are slipping. Never used to be like this. I will certainly not be returning.

We decided to have a burger and film night and decided on the Meating Room as have not had it for a while. We ordered through Deliveroo and the food was delivered at the promised time. We had the st petersburg burger (cheese burger) and were delighted with the choice. Great burger, well cooked, flavoursome ingredients. I also had the buffalo wings on the side which were fantastic, the closest to the american classic I have found so far in the UK. Spicy hot with a nice crunch to the skin. Will definitely be ordering them again!

Delicious excellent quality beef burgers and rosemary fries. Salted caramel milk shakes complete the feast!

Trying to keep local takeaways afloat so thought we’d try The Meating Room. If you’ve not had one of their burgers then please do so ASAP. We both had the St Peters burger, which is the cheeseburger & the rosemary salted chips, which are to die for. Great service & a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

Just had the Meating Room burger with one of many extras available. It comes with chips and I had a side of onion rings. Cooked there and then to your preference (I had medium). Wow, fantastic food at a very reasonable price, I will definitely be back for another!!!

Since it's covid they were only doing take away so we weren't able to sit in there. However their burgers had been amazing, their chips were nice.

Very good quality burger and chips, happened to come for the lunchtime meal deal and that only makes it better (only 6 pounds!)

Ordered a takeaway through Deliveroo; everything arrived piping hot, and the burger was one of the best I can remember. Just the right amount of (delicious) sauce - didn't all end up in my lap, good bun that held together until the last bite, and proper crispy chips. Surprised at how pink it was, but no complaints at all.

Several times during lock down we have ordered food from here and not once have we been disappointed. Burgers come wiht delicious fries and according to my boys the milkshakes are amazing. We have worked our way through the list of burgers and recommend them all.

Ordered some wings from this place at the weekend, having been craving them for weeks. I ordered the Chipotle and BBQ Sauce ones. They were both pack full of flavour, piping hot, excellent breading on the outside of the wing, so they were nice and crispy to bite into and the wing itself was meaty.Would definitely get wings from here again! Best I've had in St Albans so far. They should be a main dish with more flavours to choose from!

Ordered a takeaway from here last weekend and it reaffirmed that this really is the best burger around. They use steak beef so you can have your burger pink in the middle if you want and the rosemary chips are outstanding. Dammit, just thinking about it makes me want another one.

I am so sorry to say that the burger I had tonight was really over cooked and dry.. it is normally our go-to take away and great burgers but this evening it was very disappointing 😔

Had before in the past and it’s been really good but today my medium burger didn’t have any pink in it at all and was hard to swallow. My partners was cooked medium and tasted nice. Mine was tough and flavourless

We ordered from here today through Deliveroo. 20 mins after we ordered the food had already arrived and was delicious - and so many great choices of burgers. Would 110% recommend and look forward to going in person one day.

We booked for a table of 6, restaurant is quite small but definitely packs a . Burgers came out pretty swift and were amazing, cooked to perfection, very nice. Four of us had milkshakes which were also amazing thick real shakes. All in all recommend this place however definitely book as otherwise you may be disappointed

Loved this! Small but perfectly formed! Excellent food & shakes. Happy all round. Service was great and friendly. It was more a burger cafe that a comfy cosy/lounge round for hours. But a great local place rather than your usual chain.

The best burgers for miles, while I am a meat eater my partner is veggie and this is the perfect spot for us both. Lovely staff, BYO policy so we can enjoy a nice bottle of wine with our burgers. Will keep returning.

We went here for a burger break and it was really tasty. Decent priced meals, decent portions and nice atmosphere. The restaurant is quite small thought. Better if you ring and book a place. I recommend The Meating Room 👍

Do you like meat? DO YOU? If you do, then you'll like this place! The menu is pretty standard and could do with a little more imagination (like topped fries, greater selection of burgers, etc...) but having said that, what you do get is served pretty quick by friendly staff and is of a fantastic quality.

Nice little burger joint and I really do love a good burger. Upon arrival we we politely greeted by a member of staff who was busy making milkshakes so we sat ourselves down after grabbing a few menus. Staff came to our table quickly and took our order and the food arrived promptly. We ordered 2 Meating Room Burgers, BBQ wings and a side of coleslaw. The burgers were flavourful and served on a lovely soft brioche bun. BBQ sauce oozed from the burger upon my first bite and I loved it. Juicy tomato filled my mouth with every bite. I do love a well constructed messy burger. The BBQ wings were tasty but lacked a little something for me. It was an enjoyable burger but I would've liked a bit more "bite" to it. Maybe more breadcrumbs and egg to bond everything together. The wings: I was expecting piping hot, tender pieces of chicken but I got tasty wings with crispy coating but the meat wasn't as tender as I had hoped. Overall an enjoyable experience and I would make that drive again and try a different burger.

My family and I went to this restaurant today at 8:55pm, to find that the sign on the door said 'closed', regardless of the closing time being stated as 10pm both on the website and advertised on the door. When I asked a member of staff why this was, she responded that they have ran out of produce! This is now the second time that they have used this same excuse. I'm just confused how a restaurant runs out of produce an hour before closing time on a Monday night? We received no apology for the inconvenience either, which you'd think would be the first thing they would say. It seemed more like she was trying to dismiss us and close early. Very unprofessional.

Was so disappointing. We got it delivered and our order was wrong. Sauce on the burgers and the halloumi swimming in....something. Chips were nice though 👍

Visited for the first time as a small group. We all enjoyed our burgers and found the staff to be really friendly. We would visit again if we were in the area.

We tried this place on the off chance as we were passing, and after eating there we all agreed we would be coming back. My other half had the halloumi burger, the kids each had the meating room burger, I had the St. Paul’s and we all really enjoyed them. We all agreed the rosemary flavoured fries were excellent, and we also tried the calamari which were great. Not a large place which gives it a ver y cool cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Definitely coming back, the burgers are worth making the journey for.

Burgers are on point! Taste is great, the meat is not dry, the different options are great, the cheeses, the spices. Wow! And their sweet potato fries are delicious!! Definitely one of my favourite burger places!!

Used to eat at St Albans about 3 years ago quite regularly and loved it. Visited Berko yesterday for my 30th birthday and loved it. Still great tasting burgers, superb fries and more friendly and helpful staff :) will 100% be visiting again.

Objective, In-depth review: This place has great burgers which are succulent and juicy throughout. Some of the best burgers I have had the pleasure of eating. They have a small refined menu. The signature 'Meating Room' burger is the standout burger, with premium high quality fresh ingredients used. All burgers are cooked to your preference, which makes it a great appeal. I can advise getting the west county beef patty cooked to a medium well. Although smashed burgers with american cheese are my all-time favourite, the 'Meating Room' was up there amongst the greatest burgers. The choice of applewood smoked cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, beef tomato, addition of turkey bacon and aioli mayo also give it the class. Staff pay great attention to detail, and service along with the time for food to arrive is great! Quick turnaround. I think we were served by 3 members of staff within the space of 5 minutes. Food came within 8 minutes of sitting down. There were over 4 people working in the open kitchen alone. Clearly a family and friends run small business, which I love to support. The side chips, both fire and sweet potato fries were a delight. Crunchy and full of flavour. The strawberry milkshake had a subtle but rich creamy taste, which was a standout. The selection of soft drinks are also fantastic. I chose the sour cherry cola, which was lovely. The place is also very popular with locals, and it can get really busy. Some lunchtimes, it can get very difficult to find a table as they operate limited hours on weekdays. Thus, I advise booking in advance. The restaurant is very small and so space is limited. It can get very cramped, especially when people are trying to place takeaway orders and forming a queue. This is because they do a very good lunch deal - burger, chips and drink for £5.95. Parking nearby is available - most roads have an hour free parking. The downside for me were the wings. We got the chipotle wings, which had a slightly old feel and taste. They had a crunch but lacked flavour. The chipotle glaze just did not work for me here. Similarly, the BBQ chilli wings were just too sweet and not a hint of chilli in sight. It would be best to just call them Sticky BBQ wings. It almost feels as though their burgers are so good, stealing the show, that they have neglected their wings. With the Batchwood Burger, the patty is just too small and thin. Not as big as the beef. Would advise getting a double, both fried or grilled, if chicken is your preference. However, my wife did say it tasted great. A shame she was still hungry afterwards. Some tweaks, but I shall be back to try the Lamb special burger. Left very satisfied. A gem of a place. 8/10

Was a late birthday meal the meatingroom sent me a free burger voucher so seemed like a good idea to go was very good burger cooked to perfection chips hot and seasoned well very good service and friendly staff will go back again soon

Please can you refrain from touching your noise or face when doing the burgers!! It’s a TURN OFF!!! Shouldn’t be touching your body when handling food this is poor hygiene!! And please be more friendly !!

Such a brilliant meal. I ordered the Portabello Mushroom burger with a side of Buffalo Chicken Wings. The service was quick and friendly. The food was delicious and I enjoyed their unusual selection of soft drinks. Would highly recommend eating here. It is quite a causal spot.

Reasonable prices. £30 for starters, shakes and two burgers. Good presentation. Lovely staff. Nice ambience. Good range of choice on the menu. I was not impressed with the taste.

Nice cozy little restaurant. With excellent burgers simply the best burger I've ever had, it was completely different to usual fast food. Service was prompt and kids were entertained with colouring menu. Once we ordered food came super quick. The whole family enjoyed the experience and Manager Jamal looked after us, so we will be visiting the other branch in Berkhamsted to see how Al compares. 😉👍🍔

My wife and I called to around 9.15 to see if they can sit us and we were told that as long as we can get there and order before 10 they’ll sit us. So we drove from Watford and got to the restaurant at 9.40. We walk in and ask for a table and we’re told they’re doing takeaway only, baring in mind it’s a Saturday and they’re advertised as open till 11pm. We then told the girl at the front we spoke to them on the phone and told her about the conversation to which the girl told us nope takeaway only. When trying to ask her why they said they would sit us before 10 she had an attitude and just said do you want takeaway or not and this was in front of other customers. I don’t see how she could misunderstand us asking for a table for 2 for us asking for takeaway. How does a business stop sitting customers at 9.40 on a Saturday? Especially when you’re advertised as open till 11 and had 5 people in the kitchen. The milkshake which we used to go for regularly isn’t what it used to be and the last time we went my wife found a hair in her burger. So I definitely won’t be going back which is a shame as I’ve been going since they opened years ago

I had lunch in the Meating Room two times and both were amazing. As a side, coleslaw and chicken wings were really good! The place is small but very lovely decorated. Definitely recommended!

We went to this place yesterday for dinner and the food was very nice and so were the milkshakes but my brother's burger was overdone but mine was very tasty and juicy.

If you want a great burger that’s their speciality. I had the meating room burger which was juicy and delicious, the sauce was amazing. Shakes are thick and creamy. They were also very accommodating for our baby, making room for the pram and a highchair plus doing her plain chicken cut up in a bowl.

My partner and I regularly visit and order from the Meating Room, and we have never been disappointed! They serve a lovely variety of different burgers and sides (and do an fab aioli), and service is quick and efficient in the restaurant and on delivery. This is probably our go-to food when we want a meal which will definitely be delicious- we will be coming back for a long time.

Been to this place a few times but from the my last experience I won’t be visiting again. Me and my friends opted for the meating room burger and wings. All three of us found our burgers to be ridiculously salty and couldn’t even eat half of it, bare in mind burgers are what these guys are known for. After complaining to management, even though all our meals were salty they took one burger of the bill. But that’s besides the point, what has put me off is when coming to pay the bill management became very rude and said they had sold over 300 burgers today and we were the first to complain. If that was the case why weren’t we able to eat even half of our main? They repeatedly said this. Management is the reason I won’t be going back here, even then food is below average.

I really wanted to like this place, I did!! So, the welcome was definitely not friendly or warm, just a gleaming "have you book", the burger itself was okay - but one of my two patties was almost well done and the other one almost rare with the occasional chewy gristle, so it wasn't the medium rare I asked for. Onion rings probably Tesco value, and Chicken wings, barely any meat on them. The wings arrived steaming hot but everything else arrived a bit cold. This place has the potential to be cool and quirky in a good way, just needs a bit more love and affection from the staff, and better ingredients.

Small cozy place with warm hospitality. They bake the brioche buns there and the meet is locally sourced and that's what gives the beef burgers authentic taste. I went for the House Burger. The patty was exactly as I asked, medium, the relish was the right temperature and as I said the secret ingredient brioche makes that big difference in taste. The sauce was a bit sweet for my liking, perhaps I will go for the hot one next time, but I would still give the burger 9 out of 10. We also ordered chipotle chicken wings, not that hot but they were good. Buffalo wings next time 😁

We popped in early evening for some good meaty food. We had tried on a previous occasion but couldn't get a seat. Thankfully, this time we did.

We decided to visit the meating room after reading some reviews and thought we would give it a go. All 3 of us had a burger which was nice. We were disappointed with the supposed bbq chili wings. There was no heat what so ever and they were smothered in too much bbq sauce, poor. The halloumi cheese was fine.
