We had a fantastic meal at The Meadery in Newlyn. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and went out of their way to make sure our large greyhound was comfortable, which we really appreciated! The food was excellent, we enjoyed the ‘chicken in the rough’ with a fresh salad, followed by a classic banana split for dessert. Thank you to the whole team at The Meadery for such a welcoming and delicious experience!

30 years has passed in the blink of an eye, but - just like the good old days of Cornwall Summers - Newlyn Meadery remains a highlight! My sons are teenagers now and just experienced their first taste of Cornish hospitality. The breaded garlic mushrooms tasted as always remembered all those years ago. We attended as a family group of 9 members last night. Not only was the food 5* but the ambience, staff competence, and general decor still makes for a highly enticing experience. No, I'm not hallucinating, but seriously - grab your mushrooms! You will enter a transcendent experience based solely on love. Long-lost family reunited here last night. People from my childhood (now grown-ups with families and successful careers). 60 years in the running - wow - a celebration in every mouthful, every bite a party! If you're in the Penzance area with family, Newlyn Meadery is an absolute must! Thankyou Catlyn on the downstairs reception, your welcome and farewell simply added to our very special and exciting get together. Humbly your diner for a night....i certainly hope to return next time we're down south. Only Cornwall could do it like this. Yorkshire Tea will always remain Yorkshire Tea; the right food, the right feeling, the right stuff! Could happily write several volumes here but think you get the picture?! VERY HAPPY CHAPPY!!!! Humbly Grateful! Sincerely, James Kershaw

Food was lovely However they forgot 2 of our meals 2 scampi apologised then charged us for 3 and refused to give a refund. Saying someone had eaten 2 meals. Had they actually done a table check they would have clearly seen that no one had 2 meals. And the server would have known if she had given someone 2 would she not? Absolutely no problem with forgetting meals mistakes happen but trying to say we lied about how many meals we had is just not on. Will definitely be going to a different meadery in future. Very disappointed as we love Newlyn.

We visited here on New Years Eve for a meal and one of our children has an egg allergy. As usual wherever we go, we told our waitress about this to ensure that his meal didn't contain any egg. We were assured that there was no egg in the food he had ordered. However, partway through the meal it became obvious that he had eaten egg. We then had to leave most of our meal and cut our evening short . . . after paying £100+ for the pleasure! We did tell the lady that we paid why there was so much food left and all she said was "Oh, we're usually very good with allergies." Thank goodness it's not a life threatening allergy to him!

What could be better than Mead, comfort food and very attractive medieval wenches? Nothing , that’s what! If you’re looking for haute cuisine, you’ve come to the wrong place but if you just wanna have a laugh with decent service with a smile (and medieval wenches) then stop by. A shame they don’t do spirits but a small quibble. The flavoured meads are actually very good. This place was rammed when I went so be prepared to have a few bevvies whilst waiting. Great fun!

Despite the hype and the website, if you are expecting a “medieval” dining experience you will be sadly disappointed. Other than basic fried food being served in a big hall with help yourself salad, a few orange light bulbs and waitresses (wenches) dressed in skirts and blouses, it fails miserably. The background music is loud and very modern, almost rock, there are coke (the drink) machines lit up and it has zero medieval atmosphere. Chicken and Chips was chicken and chips, can’t get that wrong. However we returned our deserts because they had obviously been over done in the 900w microwave, soggy Apple crumble with a tiny bit of clotted cream. Overall very friendly staff, but save yourself the disappointment and go to a restaurant, as in a proper restaurant.

The Meadery in Newlyn is a great way to spend an evening enjoying the most Cornish of restaurants. Food is traditional pub fare and designed to be eaten with your hands. Drink is mead, which is honey based and comes in multiple fruit flavours and does not taste as alcoholic as it is. The only downside to this restaurant is that it has a somewhat limited menu which is calorific.

We had a warm welcome popped onto a waiting list and asked to take a seat. Everyone that was waiting were offered drinks except us but they were busy so we took it on the chin. A party of 5 arrived and a 3 and as the waitress knew them (she actually hugged them) she offered to arrange to seat them on tables next to one another. Both parties mixed between the tables and walked without face masks. They weren’t the only ones that walked the restaurant without face masks either. We were astounded by the table that were allowed to dance and sing in the walkway also minus face masks, it was 8pm and they clearly had too much mead! The service was good and the food was okay too just a shame that once inside the restaurant customers feel they are invincible. We know it’s hard to approach such customers and you shouldn’t need to but unfortunately we felt on edge all evening.

A visit to a Meadery is usually a must on our Cornish holidays. We usually visit another one locally, but opted for the Newlyn Meadery as we have brought our dogs with us on this trip. The restaurant is in a lovely setting with plenty of outdoor seating on a warm summers evening (or if you have dogs) BUT they also will accommodate dogs at table 37 - it’s sort of on the way up to the restaurant tucked away in the corner. This place used to only operate walk ins only but now due to Covid you can now book a table (advisable to avoid disappointment!). Unfortunately there is no salad bar (which they are famous for) at the moment but they do offer a side salad of some customer favourites. The place is everything you would expect from a Cornish Meadery - a darkened dining experience with dressed up waitresses and finger food served on wooden plates. I would say that the portion sizes are not as big as the other Meadery we usually frequent but the food was equally yummy with the added bonus of being dog friendly. It was a win win all round for us! We will be back - and hope to try your salad bar next time.

We went to dinner with family and friends. The room was very dark, but impressive. Not knowing what to expect we sat down and was greeted by a lovely lady. The menu had something for everyone and a designated salad bar.The starters were fresh and tasty. I had a prawn cocktail, not many prawns. A bit of a throwback to the 70s in presentation. Disappointed the prawns were scarce as the dish was tasty.A few of us opted for Chicken in the rough. Whilst you had the opportunity to have half chips and half salad with your chicken. Great idea. I wasn’t too keen on the deep fried chicken. The restaurant is very popular, no bookings, first come first served. It gets very busy and noisy. Not the place to have a conversation over dinner. All the staff are dressed in themed dresses. The staff work extremely hard, not a minute to catch a breath.I loved the building, however I felt like I was waiting for the music to start. This place had such potential for a really good night. Judging by how busy it is they probably don’t want music. For me the noise was overwhelming from everyone talking.Worth noting, if you go to the salad bar twice you will be charged twice. This is explained to you when you are served. There is nothing bad about this place. It could be so much better. I tried it, wasn’t really keen on the food or ambiance.

The queue to get in formed before the opening time but actually there were plenty of tables left after the intial rush. Very friendly table service and the mead was lovely. Food was average and mostly deep-fried, portions were huge so we all opted for small and it was still enough. Nobody ever needs the size of the large chicken and chips portions served here and we observed an awful lot of food being wasted here. The only thing which came in small portions was the salad, which is a shame because that was the tastiest part of the meal. Our table was sticky and it definitely needed more lighting, the gloom does not add to the atmosphere at all.

We have visited here many, many times over the years and always enjoy the food. Most of the food is eaten with your fingers, but knives and forks are available if you should want to use them. It really is a very different dining experience; very dimly lit, wooden tables, waitresses dressed as maids. All very friendly and helpful. The food, chicken and chips, scampi and chips and other similar dishes are all served piping hot and there is a lovely salad bar to help yourself. My grandad actually came here in the 70s and I came as a child so it was nice to come back with my partner 20 years or so later. Came early but the queue was large so we came back a bit later. We both had chicken but I had the small portion as I knew I would never manage a big one. The salad bar was really nice. We didn't have dessert because we were full. It was really hot but there were some fans. It was incredibly noisy which added to the atmosphere although noisy and busy places tend to make me a bit anxious but it was fine here. What I don't understand is why only the top floor was in action. The bottom 2 floors were much cooler and I would have preferred to have sat there. My boyfriend loved it as he loves all things medieval and often has mead at home. The parking situation is dire as the car park only has about 10 spaces. In the end we had to park next to someones house and it made me feel uneasy. I know this isnt the meadery fault at all but something they could look into for the future.

They let us in and we go upstairs soaking in an amazing building and the dark atmosphere that was setting the tone for the evening. We get met by a waitress and she sees us to a table and they get us a high chair which was wrapped (massive plus). We then browse the menu and quickly decide “chicken in the rough” is the best choice because of the nature of the dish. We have starters of garlic bread and scampi which were very average in my opinion. Along side this we all went up to the salad bar which was basic but what was there was good, perhaps some green leaves guys?.

We visited with some friends , we had just done a bit of a long walk so just needed some no fuss sustenance. The Meadery supplied just that, the staff were helpful and friendly. The food was average but came quickly which was just what we needed. The Medieval theme was fun great for kids.

I love going to The Meadery, the selection of good food is wonderful and the atmosphere superb. Although my decision of what I want to eat rarely differs, I never know what to get as I know that it will always be good. The staff are always there for whatever your need and the kids (I am one!) usually get a treat or two by the end of the evening!

Newlyn Meadery does basic food which can be eaten without cutlery and this is it’s charm! Think Scampi and chips, chicken and chips etc...

Needs a thorough cleaning and refurbishment. Food very ordinary. Salad items tasteless. Dish ordered was forgotten about and no compensation offered. Won’t be back

First visit for several years, but its still the same. Same theme, plates, menu, but its what we expected. The place was packed even though it was a cold January evening. The service was still very prompt and polite. The food was as expected and hoped for. Lots of fried food and greasy fingers, although the salad bar was plentiful too. The atmosphere was noisy and endless renditions of the happy birthday song would not make for quiet romantic dining, but its fun and not particularly expensive.

Been visiting the Meadery for 15 years now, without exception the food is always good, as is the service, and the mead itself of course is the icing on the cake.

Having eaten here many times here over the the past year and beyond, Newlyn Meadery is the best in the local area, basic but delicious food with fantastic service. Ideal for families, couples or groups of friends. However would recommend arriving early as tables come on a first come first serve basis, however if it is busy it is well worth waiting for. We’ll continue to come back.

I love it here. It is the best of the Meaderys. Think medieval dinning, no knife and fork required. Yummy food and lovely mead. ITs a theme restaurant done very well. I really enjoy going here.

I've eaten some really good fried chicken in the USA and this place ranks up there with some of the best. The Chicken in the Rough meal was great value for money and tasted really good. This was washed down with blackberry mead.....that was just too good. We will be back.

The Meadery is a popular local spot around Newlyn but don't set your expectations too high. Average food, reasonable salad bar but reasonably priced too.

Myself and some girls came here for a meal for a get together. As we arrived, we picked a table. A waitress came over straight away and took our food & drinks order. We went up to get our salad, as we got back to our table our food was there on the table. Excellent service! We had ribs and they were fantastic! We all really enjoy our meal and the warm and friendly staff who couldn't do enough to help!

Wandering about an area of Newlyn that was new to me and hoping I might find somewhere to eat, I came upon The Meadery. This restaurant was all locked up but there was small group clearly waiting. The group became a crowd and when the doors opened at 6.30 the mass moved forward and I was sucked inside.Everyone knew where to go and I ended upstairs where I found a small table and grabbed it. Almost immediately a waitress approached. Apart from fish, I ordered a jug of mead for I rarely get the chance and it was very good.

We came here after hearing about it. Even though we arrived 45 mins early the local lady who queued behind us reassured me it was worth the wait as "one of the best Meadery's"We were second in line (only 2 of us) and yet it took them ages to take our order. Going to bigger and other families that were behind usMy daughter had chicken in the rough - small portion. Which hardly had any actual chicken in it - which wasn't then great when she didn't like the coating. I had squid - which was nice but nothing to write home about. Overall I thought it looked good value - but actually felt ripped off as the food quality was poor. We had a banana split to share - as I ended up sharing my meal with my daughter. Small portions were recommended as the large are supposed to be too much? We asked for the split to only have half of it covered in nuts - which just seemed very difficult to ask for with the waitressDefinitely not a great experience or food. Would recommend you don't actually come here and go elsewhere

We super loved this place! Like an old galleon or medieval place the staff were SO good, the meals large and the atmosphere brilliant. The mead is so tasty and strong!!! Thumbs and 5/5 from all our family - 3 generations. Salad bar maybe a little lacking but didn't detract from the great (big) meal. Good value, great fun for the family.

We drove past this restaurant and the location being set by a river prompted me to google it. I came here with two teenagers, my mum and my daughter aged 6, it's a nice restaurant with reasonable prices. I liked the decor and the theme, felt this could be improved more than it is, maybe have more entertainment for summer months. Anyway we all enjoyed our generous portions and service was good.

The Meadery is great for families with young kids! Staff is friendly, kind and swift. Please do not expect high class food here, but if you are out with your family looking for an atmosphere where families are welcome and valued, you are at the right place here.Meals and drinks are being served quickly after you placed the order, which is extremely helpful with kids and Co.Overall a good experience for a family dinner.

We booked afternoon tea for family celebrations. Afternoon tea was presented beautifully and was delicious. Our waitress Pinka was friendly and looked after us. The special offer was a bonus too. Highly recommended!

Beautiful building. Amanda the barmaid/waitress was very helpful and friendly. My family had the ham egg and chips, which was outstanding. I had fish and chips, the fish was delicious and fresh. The puddings were sinful and beautifully made.

Went for a coffee and was told could only have take away as it was 15:40 on a Sunday, my wife and I are both disabled and I have an ostomy and asked to use the loo and was told I could only if I buy something, so it cost me 7 quid for two takeaway coffees just to use the loo....thanks national trust

We stopped for an ice cream while on the search for our car keys which we lost on the beach!! 🤦🏽♀️ The rum and raisin ice cream was AMAZING and no complaints from the kids and hubby with their choices! The lovely gent who served us got his wife Zara to help us with locating the keys which luckily where found and left at the RLNI across but was closed, she managed to find someone who got the keys So thank you so much for your help lovely people and for the ice creams! 🥰 wishing you all the best x
