The Basset Arms in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Sadly, in our opinion, the Basset Arms has gone downhill. The roast was not good, it took an age to get to us, the vegetables arrived a good 5 minutes after the main plates, the cauliflower/broccoli cheese was very crusty, the roast potatoes were like leather, the chicken portions were very small and the service was poor. It was very disappointing!

Visited Basset Arms on the Sunday afternoon of our holiday in Portreath. What a lovely atmosphere, the sun was out, live music playing outside and lots of people having fun. We had had food and drinks which were lovely. Would visit again if we holiday in this area again. Also nice to take our dog too as well.

Laura our waitress last night, she was so welcoming and helpful and really looked after us - the food was all excellent and all the staff were great but Laura stood out! The six of us have straightaway rebooked for Saturday, our last night here treat!

Popped in for a quick drink and stayed for dinner. Lovely local pub with friendly staff and customers. Food was great and we went back a couple of times before coming home. Well worth a visit

We both had the Basset burger which proved to be an inspired choice. It was divine, a good beefy patty proper bacon & cheese and a hash brown, the chips were perfect, golden and crispy outside soft & fluffy inside and a nice fresh salad on the side. Recommended.

Classical Cornwall pub. The kitchen closes early: better order before 8 pm Young crew often clumsy. The good is abundant and there are choices of beers. Desserts are well prepared. Loved the sweet potato chips, the fresh cod and the final pudding.

Good food.. lovely atmosphere. Also dog friendly if they are well behaved.. shame they were under staffed on this visit.

Just visited the restaurant for roast dinner and it was disappointing. 2 out of the 5 of us dining thought it was ‘ok’ but the other 2 adults hated it! Grey gravy, odd roast potatoes, and a struggle to get the chef to allow a Yorkshire pudding on roast pork, even after we said we’d pay extra! Luckily the waitress understood the importance of customer service. Maybe the chef was having a bad day, because all the other reviews tell a different story to our experience. The waitresses who served us were both lovely and worked really hard.

Seafood pasta was lovely. So much seafood in it. Mussels, prawns, white fish. So well cooked. Chilli hot as I like it. Will definitely come back.

Had our evening meal here. Meals were chicken and chorizo pasta, fish pie, scampi, gammon. All very enjoyable.

Good old Cornish pub very friendly and welcoming with a good selection of beers and ciders

Very friendly welcome and service throughout. Good selection of well tended ales. Outstanding creamed mussels and fries on the daily menu! Not our first visit and certainly not our last! Well worth a try!

A jolly place to be. From the staff to patrons. Everybody extremely friendly even the dogs. The food was exceptional and mo rip off prices. Thank you for making our week in Cornwall so welcoming.

Gorgeous lunch at the Bassett today..booked a table to be on the safe side..on arrival very friendly greeting by the bar staff...we chose Mussels cooked in creamy cider sauce with skinny chips from the specials board...they were probably the best Mussels we've eaten ..even better than Roscoff and they took some beating. The mussel meat filled the shell in almost all if them... the sauce was very tasty and the skinny fries went down well..My husband is coeliac and was reassured by the landlady that his food would be gluten free...will definitely be back again and won't leave it so long next time..friendly atmosphere great local pub..thanks for a lovely lunch..

The rudest waitress i have ever have the displeasure to be served by. When we asked for some onion rings we were told they weren't on the menu and if we didn't like it we could eat elsewhere! As to the food, its like the song from the musical, grease is the word. We had such a bad time we refused to pay. Never again.

Went today for the Sunday roast. Very disappointed… roast potatoes so overcooked they were impossible to cut with a knife … once open they were missing any potato middle!!! Very frugal veg serving… no Yorkshire pud as they ‘had none left’ As a veggie I had nut roast… not bad but served with no sauce . Service was shocking … made to feel like an inconvenience. Paid full price for leftovers! Feel robbed. First visit … we will not return.

Popped in on sat for a quick pint. Bar lady was welcoming and friendly. I chose the Skinners Porthleven ale. Really really fresh and tasty.. if I wasn't driving I could've stayed drinking that all day. Nice location with some parking. Parking available free on the hill or on the sea front just 1 mins walk away.

Hubby and I stopped in to have his birthday celebration dinner. Nice little 200 + Yr old pub, tucked away from the beach. Service was great. Food was really nice. Love they have tapas on the menu. We didn't book a table, but they accommodated us. We got there 15 mins. before dinner started (starts at 5:30p) It started to get busy around 6pm with those who had booked a table. Would definitely go back when we're in the area again.

Lovely food, welcoming staff and a nice atmosphere. Fantastic sea food, mussels and cottage pie. Would highly recommend the Bassett arms.

They've got the knack of keeping happy locals despite us holiday makers coming in droves. Always been helpful and hospitable to our (sometimes big) group.

Really friendly local pub, great pub grub and often live music. Well worth a visit in summer as it has a lovely beer garden and little park for the little ones.

Would not recommend the Sunday roast went there today disgusting. Ordered a vegetarian on arrival. Told me there is no vegetarian. Would only be able to give me the veg Which i said would have to do consistent of three roast potatoes. One piece of broccoli tablespoon of red cabbage and a tablespoon of peas a Yorkshire pudding which seems like had been standing very while when said to the waitress that I ordered a vegetarian they said I wouldn't have to pay for it. My husband had the chicken which is the same amount of veggies me with two pieces of chicken. His was £13 and they tried to charge me £10 for mine. Definitely will not be going there again. Used to be good a long time ago 😡😡😡

I had a lovely Chicken in a delicous Mushroom sauce with georgous chips and a side salad. Top notch!

We had a lovely meal here on the last day of our holiday in Portreath. I would recommend booking a table as it was really busy. Especially if you have a dog. There was a lovely friendly atmosphere as it seems to be a favourite with the locals. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Very relaxed atmosphere. I had seared scallops with asparagus and Dijon mash. My husband had chicken, bacon and brie, chips and salad. Both from the specials menu and both very tasty. The price was very reasonable with drinks as well. We met and chatted to some lovely locals.

My friends and I visited yesterday and were very impressed by the friendliness of all the staff despite how busy they were they went out of their way to provide us with food. We had missed lunchtime so were provided with Coronation picnic boxes of delicious homemade food. They also provided a vegetarian picnic box which the chef cooked specifically for our vegetarian member. Thank you for making us so welcome.

We had a drink and meal here when walking the coast path. Very friendly and welcoming staff. We had a delicious meal here including some great veggie options. Very good value food & drinks. Highly recommended.

I have never felt so unwelcome in my life. Walked in and everyone in the pub stopped what they were doing and watched. We ordered drinks but felt so uncomfortable that we didn't stay to drink them. Would never go back

Went for Sunday lunch on Mother's day. Excellent meal with friendly service. Only thing missing Julie, we were disappointed she wasn't on duty.

Not much choice for lunchtime dining as it was Mothering Sunday. Bit disappointed because my son had been there previously in the evening and was very pleased.

Arrived before 9.30 got served our drinks and asked when last orders were no reply went outside for cigarette then lights outside switched off then locked out with our drinks in darkness needing toilet. Terrible just a polite acknowledgement that he's closing would have helped

Been coming to Portreath for years and the Bassett Arms has always been great but tonight it was bad. Green Lipped Mussels - told they were not frozen …. Really! 12 1/2 shelled mussels for a main at £16? And seafood platter frozen tiny prawns and 3 half shelled mussels and a tiny bit of some kind of fish? Really disappointed as we brought friends. Seafood balti again all frozen seafood… and the ultimate was no burgers!! Waitresses didn’t know what they were serving !!

A great proper local cosy little seaside pub, family owned with an excellent selection of food at great prices. We took a group of 45 people and they all loved it.

Visited this evening, very friendly and efficient service. Couldn’t do enough for us, made to feel welcome. Had the sea bass from the special board, local muscles and son had the beef burger. Food was delicious and good value for money. Would highly recommend.

A very welcoming local pub, with superb beers - and on the one occasion I dropped in, utterly sublime sea bass with samphire and sautée potatoes... Just delicious. Was recommended by my hotel and didn't disappoint. At least 4 x real ales on tap and a friendly welcoming atmosphere. Would return in a heart beat. Recommended.

Ate here for dinner whilst on holiday. Great food. My wife loved the Monkfish. I had peppered steak, which was lovely. Excellent service by the young staff despite being very busy.

Just up from the beach. Ate here once and then drove 20 minutes the next day to eat there again. The food was wonderful and the staff were very kind.

Amazing. Fabulous staff. Really friendly atmos. Suitable for everyone. Endless Coffee, great food. Top notch professional staff. Toilets are immaculate. And you can't beat them on value. I personally only pop in for one and I'm off. But I can totally recommend 'Spoons'. Go see yourselves. You will have an amazing time.

Had a nice curry meal here last night, together with several pints of Dartmoor "Legend" beer which was well kept and flavoursome. Four beers on hand pump, including the obvious and ubiquitous "Doom Bar", which I naturally avoided!

Food is excellent, prices good and pretty quick service, would absolutely recommend to anyone!

Third time to the Bassett and once again it DID NOT disappoint. I had the special..fish pie ,truly homemade with loads of fish and amazing yummy sauce and potatoes, veg was cooked perfect and fresh .portions are generous so go hungry. The staff are very welcoming. Worth a visit, we will be back in September.

Always lovely food and drinks for when it was a short walk down a hill away back on childhood holidays. The outdoor garden and conservatory was lovely to be in on evenings and days to cool down too
