We have just returned from a one night break at The Three Horseshoes. We made a late booking and only one room available -Saddlers - which was a lovely, comfortable room and had everything we needed, and well decorated. En-suite was nice with a good shower. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t brilliant, so we only spent a brief time sat out in the garden, but has a lovely courtyard area and grassed lawn area, overlooking fields at the back with plenty of seating; would have liked to have been able to spend more time relaxing there. We had an evening meal near the fire (in June!) and we both loved all 3 courses; thoroughly enjoyable. Breakfast was also lovely with plenty of choice and set us up well for the day. The location is beautiful, and there seemed to be several good walks to go on had we been luckier with the weather. The pub has been updated very nicely and suits our taste of the modern clean, fresh and comfortable look. The atmosphere was nice and all the staff were pleasant and very helpful. We’ll definitely return and hope for less rain so that we can enjoy the sunshine in the beautiful garden!

It was a very wet day and we were forced to sit inside. The chairs all (or most as far as I could see) had wickerwork bases and were exceptionally uncomfortable. Seemed to have been purchased for the country look rather than the customers comfort. Beer, sandwich’s and staff were ok but we will not be back.

Took my mother in law here for lunch. She was visiting from Durham and I knew this place is very picturesque and has good food. We walked through a path, edged with lavender, past tables and chairs beautifully arranged with rugs and cushions and commanding magnificent views of the surrounding countryside . Inside, it was just as inviting and cosy. We chose the special lunch… chicken kiev and we were made to feel so welcome by the staff. Infact, it made my mother in law’s day and, according to her, “restored her faith in humanity”!in particular , Marianne was so kind, helpful and attentive. She deserves special mention as she went out of her way to make our visit delightful. I recommend this pub for its outdoor setting, indoor charm, excellent food and FABULOUS service .

Not a pleasant experience at The Three Horseshoes. We went there when the place was still called the Maytyme Inn and had a great experience at the time (food was really nice). This time the food quality was average if not poor and very expensive. The trout I ordered which cost £23 was something to forget. Small portion (not even half a trout with 4 small baked potatoes on the side). Also the roasted potatoes served with the Sunday roast were very difficult to cut, the peel was hard as if the potato were cooked a couple of day before and reheated. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Always plan walking routes in the Cotswolds to incorporate a stop at a pub, so stumbled across The Three Horseshoes on one of my walks!!!! And what a find. Only stopped for a light lunch so ordered mainly starters and they were amazing! So amazing that the following days walk was planned to take in the pub again but this time for the full menu!! The food is simply delicious, the service first class and the choice of ales and wines plentiful!!! The village of Asthall is also stunning. Definitely need to make sure you take a visit.

Birthday lunch, we both had the pork belly, probably needed to be cooked longer as was on the tougher side but was fine, no real choice of veg which is a bit odd, staff were pleasant, I don’t believe in leaving bad reviews as I know how hard this trade is to make a living ( even though it’s owned by millionaires) hence the positive 5stars ❤️

Luke warm welcome. Off hand service. Little atmosphere with virtually no one inside and only had a scattering of people on the numerous outside tables. You are expected to hop up and down to order your drinks and then your food....and if you want pudding get up again to go to the bar with a pay as a go system, if you want to order several drinks while you are eating you could be hopping up and down 4, 5 or 6 times, enough to give you indigestion! I was told by the Manager it is because a 'few people did a runner last Summer' We took the average wine we had paid for back to Swinbrook and made our own delicious lunch, there is only one rose available, it's the house rose and it's expensive for what it is. The lad behind the bar told me a dish was served with focaccia 'that's bread you know'! Really you think you are offering a high end service but you treat your customers like fools you don't deserve the custom.

This pub has so much potential but this was our 2nd visit and I don’t think we will go again. My starter of crispy hens egg, mushroom and asparagus came with the egg solid in the middle - I was expecting it to be runny. Husband’s parsnip soup lacked seasoning but he enjoyed the fish and chips. My main of mushroom tortellini lacked any sauce and this meant that it was dry and very disappointing. Left quite alot of it. Doesn’t compare well to the nearby Swan at Swinbrook I’m afraid.

We have been here before and came back because it was so good. The staff are very friendly and the service is good. The tables are not too close together so it is not noisy. The food is good and has plenty of choice. There is a garden with a fire pit for warm summer evenings, and blankets are available. We were so comfortable in catching up, although we were the only ones left in the restaurant, we stayed for four hours and were made to feel comfortable!

Have to say the pudding I had which was an espresso parfait was very good indeed, best pudding I have had for sometime. My wife's cheese cake was not far behind either. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated and with a pub quiz on in the background had a good atmosphere. We would definitely go back.

We’d been looking forward to coming for food for a while but were disappointed to say the least. After paying £21 for roast beef I expected at least a full plate of food….the beef was so fatty, I had half(!!) a parsnip on my plate and three tiny roast potatoes which were overcooked. When the plates were brought out we were sat waiting for the bowls of veg to come out - nope! What was on the plate was all we got. To top it off £8 for a brownie about 4x4cm was abysmal. We left feeling hungry, and with £40 down the drain per person just for a drink, rubbish roast and a pudding. We won’t be returning!

A smartly decorated restaurant with an amazing “outside space” in a classic Cotswold setting. Attentive staff. The meal we chose was average in quality with an emphasis on “fashionable foods” eg.large doorstep slices of sourdough bread. Most of the dishes described on the menu were over-complicated and some required a translation for those of us uneducated in the world of current food trends. Overall a tad disappointing, which was a pity as we were hoping to have a family event there next month.

Our second night here on our staycation and my meal needed to be, and was, a vastly different experience from my first night’s meal the night before, especially my main course (reviewed here on TA).We met with a friend for pre-dinner drinks but he didn’t join us for dinner, we did however have a couple of glasses of the house white: the Joie de Vigne Languedoc-Roussillon 2019 vintage (our friend was driving so he had only soft drinks). When our fiend left we ordered more of the same wine to enjoy with our meal. Again we were unenthused with the starters on offer and went straight to the mains. My partner chose the Haddock and Chips which were excellent, very crisp batter, good sized fillet of well cooked fish, fab chunky chips.I also chose fish and had the Seabass which was also excellent, good fresh fish, and a really enjoyed good selection of green veg (sugar snaps, samphire and petit pois), and the tarragon butter sauce was good. I don’t care for mashed potato, so requested buttered new potatoes as a replacement; they were good but could have been a tad warmer. We both had room for dessert and my partner went the with the savour option of a cheese selection choosing the Oxford Blue (semi-hard, smooth and creamy cheese) produced in Burford, and the Comté Extra Vieux (a Cotswold gruyère-family hard cheese). Both were good with the accompanying grapes, chutney and crackers.I had the Homemade Ice Cream: a boule each of chocolate ice cream and mango sorbet. This was really good but the chocolate was quite sweet and I prefer the less sweet darker chocolate (even if this was restricted to chocolate chips).Once again the service was commendable and although we were sat in a room with a party of 10 people we were not aware of them as they behaved with respect for other diners.

Fish and chips looked nice but the chips tasted like they had been cooked earlier and then recooked later on. The fish was all batter and hardly any fish and the few peas that were served with it were rock hard. It was a very disappointing meal. This was followed by two scoops of ice cream, which tasted terribly sweet and synthetic and honestly the worst ice cream I've ever eaten...had to leave most of it as it was so awful.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stayed in this pub for a two night staycation. Our plan had always been to dine here on the evenings, as we enjoy a bottle of wine between us with good food, and therefore we can’t drive.Having said that we were initially not overly impressed with the wine list here, in that the wines that we prefer (white and dry but with good fruit notes) appeared not to be represented within our normal price range of maximum £30 per bottle (the best match would be the Sancerre at £44 a bottle. We tried a 125ml glass each of the the house white (French Languedoc-Roussillon) and the South African Chenin Blanc. Despite the ‘house’ being ‘acceptable’, we decided to flex our budget a tad to £32 to have a bottle of the very local Minster Lovell Bacchus. This was a good wine, that increasingly grew on us as we drank it, however we do buy a English Bacchus wine from ALDI for about £8.50 a bottle: this wine has far superior complexity and fruit notes. With the average restaurant mark-up on wine being 400% the ALDI wine would be £34; the pricing is therefore comparable, but the wine from ALDI is far more interesting, complex and fruity. With Minster Lovell being only 2-3 miles away I can see why this restaurant would include this on their wine list.We decided not to have starter because, sadly, nothing really appealed. For mains my partner decided on the BBQ Spatchcock Chicken: this was a whole small chicken, but it hadn’t been spatchcocked (i.e. the backbone had not been removed and the chicken wasn’t flattened). It was just a nicely cooked small chicken with a BBQ sauce glaze, heritage tomato, leaves, sweet potato fries, and half a grill-charred corn cob. It was a good and tasty dish; just not what was described on the menu.I had the Kelmscott Pork Tenderloin: which was served pink and dry (a bit like a very dry ham) served with tabbouleh (using couscous rather than bulgur wheat), herb leaves, toasted almonds and apricot puree. With this I had a side of fresh peas served with with mint and (strangely) feta cheese. The tabbouleh was also dry and thus the whole dish was very dry: and that really affected my enjoyment.Generally the menu suggested a penchant for cheese: 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 sides plus 1 steak sauce either had a cheese or curd element. I like cheese but apart from obvious dishes like pizza I prefer not to have cheese added to vegetables (especially peas). The goat curd and comté content in the lamb rump and wild boar burger respectively definitely put me off these dishes (even though I probably could have asked for the cheese to not be included). My opinion is that the Chef was trying too hard to produce something different, when a bit of simplicity is what was needed: especially so with vegetables, surely the main element of the dish should provide the scope for special flavours. We did have desserts: My partner had an excellent Passion Fruit and Lime Cheesecake. I had a good ‘Poached rhubarb and Mascarpone Lemon Curd with Granola’ creation in a glass which would have been very good had in not been for a large piece of rhubarb being very tough, requiring retrieval from my mouth!Throughout the meal the service was excellent at all times.

A lovely pub providing high class food. We stayed overnight for our wedding anniversary, choosing the Maytime because of location, reviews and a full menu on a Sunday night. We were fortunate in being able to take advantage of the Dinner, Bed And Breakfast rate which saved us nearly 50% on the evening meal; however we not have been disappointed at full price, we have paid much more for meals nowhere as good. Additionally it is the first establishment we have visited that has passed on the current 15% reduction in VAT to the customers. I sincerely hope that this superb pub rides the current Covid storm, it is a Cotswold gem. We will def stay again and wish it was closer to home, we would be regulars. Great chef and exceptional quality meat. Good ales and the less expensive Cabernet Sauvignon was very quaffable. I had the venison dish, it was superb, faultless in every aspect. Highly recommend

Visited just before Christmas and was pleased we chose The Maytime for our Saturday night dinner. Firstly, ample parking on site so that is always a plus. The pub was beautifully decorated for Christmas and had a very warming and welcoming atmosphere. Secondly, the staff were friendly and efficient and the manager was very much on hand to ensure that all customers were satisfied. The only thing stopping me giving a 5 star review was the food, which we found a bit mixed. Our starters were some of the best we've had in a long time. I had the spiced cauliflower and my wife had the pork belly. The presentation and quality on these dishes were amazing, Michelin star quality I'd say. However, perhaps because the starters were so good, the mains let us down a bit. I had haddock and chips and whilst it was decent, it wasn't the best.Overall though I'd certainly recommend this place for anyone in the area. The quality of the chef was clear, maybe it was just a bad day for the fish and chips.

Paz y tranquilidad garantizada. Me encanta. Asi que va a. ¡Intentalo!

We booked a table for 6 adults at this pub for a news years eve meal & celebration afterwards. The pub itself is beautiful & very tastfully decorated, the ambience is delightful & very comfortable to spend an evening, the staff were professional, polite & generally attentive although a comment we made about the food wasn't addressed! I would give our experience 5 stars apart from two elements which need improvement from our group viewpoint, the first is the poor range of ales on offer & some staple spirits not available like Bacaradi, the second is more important & to do with the quantity of food which were very small portions. We all had 3 courses, the quality of food was generally very good (I had the pear & blue cheese salad which was excellent & the fish bouillabaisse (which was OK but only 2 mussels, & 3 small pieces of fish served with sauce separately in a small jug which didn't taste anything special!) followed by a very small cheese board! I'm all for smaller portions of higher quality food but I am not a big eater & when I'm still hungry after 3 courses something is not right! So Maytime Inn, you are doing most things right but my advice would be to seriously think about getting some better local ales on the pumps & serve up some larger portions as I'm sure many people leave still feeling hungry!

This isn't the first time I have taken lunch at the Maytime. Indeed, it used to be my "local", though it wasn't then as good as you will find it today. A really cosy dining room, looking out to the fine garden, or what might be called Swinbrook High Street, though it isn't a high street at all but another gorgeous Cotswolds lane. The food is unquestionably better than I can remember it, and for what is primarily a pub one can have no complaints. However, my sirloin steak, asked for medium rare, was medium to well-done, and what is more simple for a kitchen to produce than a grilled steak? The salad that came with it was very good. I have a feeling, according to my lunch partner, that the fish is a better bet here than the meat, but perhaps I should have just been more adventurous and not ordered the steak. For all this, I would return to the Maytime and order something a little more testing for the kitchen, to see how they would cope with that. I enjoyed the quietness of the dining room (it makes such a change in a pub-diner), and its attractiveness. The wine was very good indeed (Classico Chianti), and the selection of cheeses was as good as I have been offered in far more expensive and elite restaurants. Give it a try and see if you agree. Places such as The Maytime Inn should be patronised and encouraged, even if my meal could have been better. LM.

2nd time we've had Sunday lunch at the Maytime and will definitely come back again. The bar staff are welcoming and as a lover of gin - recommended various choices and mixers. The table waitresses/waiters are really friendly and looked after us really well. The food is sublime - best cooked vegetables that you genuinely want to finish - fresh and lush. Their pork comes with the best crackling - so bad but so good! If you've not been give it a go - you will not be disappointed.

We have been to the Maytime on numerous occasions and love it - lovely atmosphere, great service, delicious food and seasonal vegetables and game. It is a dog friendly pub in a beautiful village setting. However, this is the first time we have been there on a Sunday and would highly recommend that they put aside one area for families with small children as the noise from two screaming little ones all but ruined our meal. It was very, very noisy and whilst I am all for taking children out to eat, this was seriously intrusive! A real shame when the food and service were faultless.

Starter of wild boar balls was very peppery so a little spicy, but might have been personal taste - we did tell the waitress. Always great roast on Sunday, good value and good quality. Car Park was once again completely full so had to park up the road - not an issue just feel sorry for the residents in the village.

Overall the dining experience was OK but with two vegetarians in the group we were very disappointed to find there was no option for a Sunday roast. A risotto is a very boring option and is not a fair substitute for a roast, perhaps you could consider adding a wellington or a nut roast to your menu to make us vegetarians feel a bit more wanted!!

First time at The Angel, en route to The Forest of Dean. It was great all round. For a Monday lunchtime this quaint pub was buzzing. Whilst we were there they had to turn lots of people away as they were fully booked. There was a roaring log burner - always welcome! The food was delicious. A lovely selection and appetising specials also. The beetroot ravioli was delightful as was the chilli squid (which can easily be chewy!) but it was soft and flavoursome.
