The Master Fish Bar in Hastings

Very noisy, fish and chips was small portions and very dry with little amount of cod. Cup of tea was tasteless and price was far too much. We will not be returning anytime soon. Very disappointed!!

Nothing really special, I must say. Not a very welcoming staff, and fish burger a bit too oily. On the other hand, good location in front of the sea and next to the lift for the castle. Room for improvements for sure.

My first meal out since having to eat gluten-free. It was super easy, with a gluten free menu and plenty of sauces to choose from. The chips and fish batter were great. The cod itself was a little bit dry. The service was excellent, with very friendly and professional staff.

Popped in for a late lunch with the kids..I had Gluten free haddock which was massive and very tasty! The batter was perfect and my son even decided to try and actually enjoyed it.(he doesn't normally like fish) my other boy was very happy with his cod and chips. We only had tap water, as I think the cans of drink cost too much. Service was a bit sloppy, quite young staff that looked like they'd had enough. I'd say the main let down is the cheap /watered down ketchup they put on the tables...a better brand would make all the difference.

Fish very fresh,lovely crispy batter.Chips good too with mushy peas along with a nice mug of tea.Quite pricey but that was not what let this fish restaurant down. It was the loud and at times heated discussion going on in the kitchen.Very off putting and distracting.The restaurant was quiet and every customer is a customer. Always nice to wind down and relax but with the constant,over the top voices from the kitchen,did not want to stay for dessert which did look very tempting. Hope the staff reading this will take this review on board as I am sure if you are dining out and paying good money yourselves,atmosphere and ambiance go a long way to feel comfortable. Sadly it has put me off returning even though the food was good.

Took a trip to hasting for a fish and chip supper, always best by the sea This place offered a gluten free batter for my wife the food was very enjoyable. The whole place was packed (well it was middle of August) service from the staff was polite and professional. Cist was as expected considering cost of living increases. Would I go again, YES. Visited here 14th July. Extremely disappointed. Ordered large cod & chips and medium cod & chips. Both pieces looked same size but medium thicker! Chips looked like they had been cooked previously then put back in the fryer to warm. Wouldn't recommend

Stopped here during a car club drive out. Good menu choice. Food cooked to order, so given buzzer to signal its ready. Loads of table benches outside overlooking the sea. Very tasty - forgot to take pic until halfway through eating!

I loved funding a fish and chips place in Hastings serving gluten free options.

Perfect location and super friendly staff. Dogs are welcome inside the restaurant. Food quality is exceptional. I highly recommend Cod with chips at this restaurant.

After a hectic weekend camping close by and everything packed away, we needed something to fill our hungry tummies. Very quick and considered service; we went for traditional cod and chips with mushy peas. Kids were very satisfied with sausage and chips and we had a side of curry sauce to appease our northern friends too!

Quick Summary; We've eaten here twice now and we have to admit, it's incredibly expensive... But there are very few places that offer gluten and dairy free cod and chips and even fewer that offer a nice one and that's where this place excels! Detailed Summary; I eat both but am trying to cut down on my gluten and dairy intake so I'm a pretty good judge in terms of someone who can tell you about recent experiences of both rather than someone like my partner who hasn't had glutenous / dairy food in many years due to her intolerances. Both myself and my partner went for a large cod and chips each and at over £16 (just over £2 more than the glutenous large cod and chips) it's pretty damn expensive, but the batter is light which is pretty rare for gluten free, it has a nice rich taste (again not as delicious as a really good glutenous alternative, but definitely on par with a lower end glutenous batter which may not sound like high praise but it really is!). The cod itself was actually very tasty, you could tell it's nice and fresh and is on par with getting cod and chips in a posh restaurant, this really helps boost the experience and makes it worthwhile. The chips are cooked in a separate fry vat so as to not cross contaminate with the glutenous chips and again they are very nice although for me as I was having a large cod and chips, I felt the portion size was more like a standard portion of chips. I also ordered bread and butter which oddly enough is listed on the gluten free side of the menu but I was told it's not gluten free... So that was a bit odd! And at £1.20 I expected at least 2 slices so I could make a while sandwich rather than half a sandwich but no, just 1 slice... It was nice though. We also ordered dessert at the start of the meal to come out once we were done but after waiting a long time after they took our plates, that never arrived so we just paid and went without so service could have been better in that sense, though everyone seemed nice and friendly. All in all at over £40 for the pair of us including drinks, the meal plus my partner also had curry sauce and a gerkin, it's an expensive fish and chip shop, but as one of the only gluten-free fish and chip venues to actually offer a nice meal I'd eat here again, just not too often at those prices.

We arranged to bring a large group of people with special needs to the the restaurant on a recent Sunday. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Although you were very busy we were served very promptly and staff were very friendly and helpful. Thank you

Food was fantastic but the service was absolutely atrocious, no eye contact, one word answers, wrong order, really poor which is a shame as the food was good.

Not masterful. The sit down restaurant was nice and spacious in terms of tables spread out. The staff were attentitive and the atmosphere was nice. We were served quickly but the quality of the food was not the best. Battered cod was mainly batter and the chips were too well done. More crisp than potato. 3 adult meals and a kids meal was nearly £60. Far too expensive for the food that is served up.

If you're hungry and need to eat, this is a good place to go. You get food, and you have a roof over your head. We had fish and chips, which was quite basic.

It's a good old fashioned chippie. Dark wood tables and chairs etc. My wife is Gluten Free and her haddock looked every bit as tasty as my non GF version. Chips lovely just a nice place to eat fish and chips.

Visited for lunch and decided to eat in. We got there early which was lucky as they were soon turning away customers They have a full gluten free menu and it does not disappoint. The battered cod and chips was some of the best gluten free I've ever tasted. Highly recommended

We visited here during the 1st weekend in October - simply because of the big 'Gluten Free' sign on the wall - but there are so many other reasons to come. First has to be the dedication to social distancing and cleanliness, and then immediately, the quality of the staff attending to us. Millie (I later learned her name), was on the ball from the moment we stepped through the door, saw us to our table, let us know when she could get to us (which was actually quite quite quickly anyhow), and was cheerful, friendly and polite. She had a good knowledge of the gluten free process, gave useful advice about portion sizes (which are really good), and always knew when our food would be ready. She twice came to check our food was ok (which it was!). When she was not serving, I saw her washing down the used menu cards before putting them in the 'ready pile'. Total dedication to the job.

Excellent service and amazing gluten free selection. The waitress told us that the gf dishes are all prepared in a separate part of the kitchen, and are served with gf vinegar. So refreshing to visit an establishment that is understands gf requirements. Great tasting food. Highly recommend!

We were staying at the travelodge and walked down to the seafront to find something to eat. We hadn't expected to walk as far as this so we were quite hungry by the time we got here.We sat with our takeaway in the little alcoves along the seafront opposite. The fish was really tasty and large portions. We were pleased we'd found this place.

A big choice of fish and chip shops along the seafront. Good choice of food and I opted for grilled plaice, chips and salad. Smashing chips with lightly grilled plaice. Partner had child size cod and chips.Cod was cooked to perfection.Waitress service was impeccable and cafe was clean and tidy.

Very friendly and clean looking place. Tables are set quite a distance apart felt very save. Order taken by friendly staff. When food delivered all lovely and greasy good sized portions. Certainly worth a visit.

Brilliant service from waitress who took our takeaway order from outside. Best fish and chips we’ve had for ages, we always follow our noses when looking for decent fish and chips and avoid ones that smell of rank fat. Master fish and chips smelled right and we weren’t disappointed. Well done, a real treat.

Having seen how many Fish & Chip venues to choose from this is the one we frequented while in Hastings. Everything was well organised, from the service and the cleaning of tables, to the lovely meal of Haddock & chips/Plaice & chips with 2 side orders of peas. Would like to eat here again if ever in Hastings

Ever want to go and have a lovely fish dinner on the seafront? This is the place to go. Our servers were polite, friendly and happy to help. The food was thoroughly cooked, very tasty and the portions were very generous.The whole restaurant was clean and we felt very safe there with sanitiser placed at various spots throughout.We'd love to pop in again if we're ever down Hastings way again.

I came to spend the week at Hastings, the restaurant I usually use was busy, so I tried this place. I was aware of this establishment before but had never used them. The outlet down the road, didn’t take card payment, so I was glad to use this place. The restaurant was clean. It was busy, but the staff handled things superbly. I had Plaice and chips with fizzy orange, followed by fruit and ice cream. I enjoyed the experience. I visited on 4 occasions. The main courses were all excellent. Plaice, Scampi, beef and Chicken burgers. All excellent. The customer service was outstanding. Everyone was helpful. Two girls stood out, they served me several times. Polite, friendly. Don't know their names, one girl as blonde with glasses and the other was taller with dark hair. They served me on the Tuesday and Wednesday . My only complaint was the desserts were rather plain. Going back to them tonight

Four of us dined and three of us thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The grilled haddock, the fish roes and the scampi were all good. The plaice less so. It was wafer thin within the thick batter. The chips were fine. We will not be returning.

Excellent quick service, hot and freshly cooked. It’s also very refreshing that I didn’t have to feel like an outcast requesting GLUTEN FREE FOOD. Condiments are also gluten free, other restaurants could learn by this example.

We sat in on a rainy Saturday eve in Hastings and the staff we so helpful and friendly. The service was quick and efficient and the food was really good quality! We had gherkins, peas and curry sauce on the side - would recommend all :)

Stopped for a quick coffee and chips. Very pleasant staff. Saw that I had accidentally put sugar and vinegar on my chips so offered to replace it free of charge. Lovely chips too

From someone who's not normally a fan of fish and chips, it's almost a must when at the seaside. I'm glad I was persuaded as this place is amazing. The food is fabulous, with incredibly large servings. The chips are just as they should be, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The fish is cooked to perfection and the service is with a beaming smile.

Arrived end of a day after fishing to be greeted by a young male waiter and seated We were served by a very cheerful lady. Our order and drinks came quick and food piping hot. We would definetly recommend a visit.

In a town where there are many good chip shops it takes something to outshine the competition - But Masters does !The chips are amazing - hot, crisp and fluffy inside, without a spot of grease. The fish is well cooked and of amazing quality and available grilled or fried. There’s a good veggie selection too - the vegetable spring rolls being the best I have had in years.Everything is freshly cooked to order and the staff are really friendly - last night they even popped our order out to our car when it was blowing a gale - we dont go anywhere else now

Would definitely recommend The Master Fish Bar. It was nice to be able to find somewhere where you could rely on it being GF, which our son needed. Had two meals there whilst in Hastings recently. Both excellent.

Popped in for take away as had seen online that they did Gluten Free. Amazing Gluten Free fish and chips, as a Coeliac great to know that they cook in a separate fryer. Food was lovely and good value too. Will be back

Had a day trip to Hastings, so decided to eat again with Master Fish Bar. Rang them to see how long it would take to have the gluten free cod and chips ready, and the very helpful lady said 15 mins. I made my order over the phone and she said I could pay on collection. I described myself, as I don't wear a face mask. 15 mins later I walked in, and a young lady went to the kitchen to gather up my order. Then lady I'd spoken to on the phone walked past and said "I'll get your order for you, Nicholas."It was all there, at the price agreed. The loveliest gluten free batter I've had a for a while. Cod was lovely too. And the chips were delicious. An absolute treat. Will certainly visit there again.

The young waitresses are very attentive and polite. The fish and chips is good quality and the place seems clean in comparison with the others businesses next to. Just in front of the beach. They kept distances between the tables. Will be back.

Visited today and ordered the Gluten Free fish and chips as a treat - as a gluten free family we've really missed fish and chips and heard they were good. The batter was good but tasteless and badly needed seasoning. Unfortunately despite asking for salt and vinegar there wasn't any on the fish or chips and the two bottles of water I ordered were also missing. I also asked for forks for the chips but these had been left out too and there were no napkins. We literally got unseasoned fish and chips and nothing else. As this was a take away, by the time we reached the beach and sat down to eat it (after queuing for some time because of the current situation), we couldn't face the walk back and the queue as it would have been stone cold. I've rated this restaurant a 4 because I am hugely grateful you are doing gluten free and managing to create a crispy batter but hope you will take on board you need to improve your attention to detail and make sure all items are in the order. I would also suggest (as someone who makes gluten free fish at home) that you season the batter with a little salt and if you can't then please remember to put the salt on afterwards if a customer asks for it.This would have been a 5 if we hadn't paid for water we never got and had to eat unseasoned food.

Always bring people here so delighted that it is fully open. The staff are always lovely. Polite, friendly and triple check everything. Food is always cooked well, wonderfully fresh and arrives at the table together. You go up and pay at the till when you have finished. They also do grilled fish as a healthy option and proper gluten free (including kids meals) complete with gluten free vinegar etc. We went with friends and for 8 of use (1 kids meal) and mainly soft drinks it was 90 quid. Everyone was pleasantly full after a long hot day at the beach. Well worth a visit.

This has to of been the best fish and chips I've had in a long time, there's tuff compition from neighbouring competitors but this is definitely the best I've had in Hastings for a while, staff are friendly and the service was great, highly recommend this restaurant. Will definitely go again

Great selection of food, including lots of gluten free options. The staff were really attentive and friendly too. We went back a couple of times during our break as loved it so much. We’ll be back again the next time we’re in Hastings.

When I visited the place I asked for a child cod with chips for takeaway. The portion was huge. I could only eat a half of the full size. Clean place. Nice staff.

We have just had a lovely take away meal for the family. I phoned ordered cod and chips, two children’s battered sausage meals and an adult battered sausage and chips. The food was cooked fresh and ready to collect in just 15 minutes. This is second time we have used The Master Fish Bar and the food was superb. The best tasting chips that we have had in a long time.

My son has Coeliac disease so to find a fish and chip shop with such an extensive GF offering is wonderful. Such a novelty to have a whole menu of choice. GF nuggets and fish were both excellent and with great service. Non-GF also delicious.

We had a lovely meal at a reasonable price. The fish was good and chunky, not a tail end. Chips were crisp and fresh. The portion of fish was huge, but with not too many chips it was a decent meal without being overwhelming. The staff were very friendly and service was good.

Very friendly staff, excellent gluten-free menu, excellent cod and chips - the best I've had in years, and my partner (who didn't have the gluten-free fish) agreed. It was our first time ordering from there, and we will definitely be working our way through the menu in future.

Ordered a takeaway and on the phone asked for salt and vinegar to be added to all the orders. When eating we were very disappointed as all the chips had no salt and vinegar at all, it was so tasteless we couldn't eat them in the end and had to throw them away.

Outside there was a sign about an award won in 2019 so when we had to choose somewhere to eat lunch I chose The Master Fish Bar.We received a pleasant greeting on arrival and were asked to choose our own table. This allowed us to choose somewhere away from the door! Shortly after arriving, the heavens opened and there was a heavy downpour, which we managed to beat so we were even more grateful!We were served by a friendly group of young people throughout our visit. Our order was taken quickly and drinks arrived a short while after. Not long after this, the food arrived. I can guess why the fish bar won an award because the chips were some of the best I've eaten in quite a long time. The fish was also very tasty - I had haddock and this can easily be tasteless but this wasn't.There are so many fish bars to choose from in Hastings and this place should be high up on the list!

We were visiting Hastings and picked this cafe among many on the sea front. They have a good window for looking out on the front. Standard fish and chips. It was of an OK standard but not the best I have had. I will try another cafe on the next visit.

Great menu with grilled fish options for those of who are health conscious. I had the grilled plaice with salad and peas and it was cooked to perfection. My partner had the small cod and chips and it was still huge. Would eat here again.

Hi just back from another day in Hastings. We found the Master Fish Bar the last time we visited Hastings for a day out after Christmas 2019. The fish and chips were probably the best we can remember eating. We ate there again today and had another cracking meal, we changed our choice of fish from Cod to Plaice and Haddock and was not disappointed. I had the place and it was great, the chips are the best, not greasy or limp. This is going to be my place of choice in the future.The only reason they did not get 5 is you always want some thing to aim for.

Claims to have won awards I’m not sure what for. Food was ok not the best I’ve had. Cod (if it was cod) was very thin and had a funny taste and chips are not cooked with fresh potatoes.

Day out in Hastings, After a long walk , we decided some fish and chips would be nice . So glad we popped into this little find . Very clean and tidy and not just deep fried fish . Grilled fish on offer , Wow what a pleasent surprise, I so much prefer grilled fish and we both wasn't dissapointed with our choices. Fantastic and tasty . We had great fish and chips here. Crispy batter,fish was fab and chips were not greasy.The staff who were waiting on tables were lovely,only young but very pleasant and never stopped smiling. A pleasant change to some staff I have encountered. We only had the small cod and chips and these were huge

So pleased to even find a fish bar that does gluten free fish and chips but not only that, they were the best I've ever had. Also good that you can have a large or small portion. I really like my food but a small portion was plenty for me. I could even order mushy peas to go with them - brilliant. I'm just sorry that I live in Hampshire and won't be able to go there regularly.

If I could score 0 stars I would, family of 8 attending for birthday lunch, informed after ordering that no sea bass was available, but due to the amount of time passing before being informed I felt forced to stay as I was the last to order and the rest of the group were settled and expecting their lunch, if I had been informed before ordering that items were unavailable we would have not stayed and gone somewhere we could all eat, instead I was left watching everybody else have lunch, would never consider returning due to poor service which is a shame as have had some lovely meals here before

Me and my friends and children.came down to the master today for some food and it was amazing. I had cod and chips the batter was beautiful and the chips where perfect havent had good chips like this in ages.

We recently stayed at Mount Pleasant House for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, no-one fancied cooking, so we had a look through the various takeaways in the area and decided to go to The Codfather. When we got there however, we found that there was barely anything for vegetarians (we have 3 in the group).

Service was quite poor, two teenagers looking very uninterested in what they were doing. Brought over a flat coke and never replaced it. Fish and chips was half decent but as you can see from the picture the chicken burger was absolutely laughable. Would not recommend and would not return.

If you want great fish and chips you should go to master’s friendly staff clean good price always lovely

Visited the Sunday after Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed an absolutely superb fish and chips. Cod and haddock both superb, lovely chips as well.
