Real gem of a fish and chip shop. Very welcoming. The staff were lovely.

Would really recommend this place if you are looking for delicious fish and chips. This was our first visit and I have to say we were impressed how delicious was fish and chips. We always used to go to different place in Hastings but this time decided to try this one. It is absolutely brilliant. The atmosphere (you can sit outside), the staff is super friendly and waiting time is very short comparing to other places. Will definitely come here again when will be visiting Hastings next time. Have visited several times and this place never disappoints. Staff always around and very attentive. Food cooked amazingly, chips cooked to perfection. Generous portion of fish, worth spending more here. Calamari cooked well, tender and breadcrumbs crispy.

Very crispy chips and batter, they had been cooked way too long. Not burnt just dry and crispy. Chips should not be like this.

Every year we used this place. What has happened?!!!. Staff clearly have no manners, short and rude. Expensive for what you get. And what you get now is atrocious. Chips were dry and clearly reheated at least twice as almost inedible. Cod....undercooked and the amount of bones....Needless to sat that wasn't eaten. A battered sausage. Battered is the word...undercooked and chewy. Avoid this place . What once was a diamond in hastings is now a disgrace. As far as hygiene and cleanliness goes...that's a whole other story. AVOID!

Absolutely terrible!!!!!! The lady was very rude when we asked for a slice of lemon, she said lemon doesn’t come on a small/childs plate when we got the bill she charged us 20p for one small slice of lemon, the prices are extortionate anyway. There was NO customer service, just for asking for something that we were overly charged for anyway the dirty looks we got and how we were spoken to and the atmosphere was completely unnecessary. And they only take cash only!

Had a worst haddock and chips, taste very odd, close to be spoiled, eve though staff assured it's fresh. On the other side cod and chis was good. Stuff vas not interested in resolving situation. I wouldn't go here again.

Had a treat here for our wedding anniversary (45th!) They treated us wonderfully- and the food was amazing. The Pinot Grigio was a very pleasant surprise too!

The Fish was nicely cooked, but I paid for a large portion, unfortunately that is not what I received , what I did get was a very small portion of chips.

After motorcycle ride down from SE London & Sevenoaks how nice to stop off here for a tasty lunch. Three of us had excellent feast on cod & chips or haddock & chips (medium). Owners were delightful and had great knowledgeable conversation with them about motorbikes and cars. Great service and staggered by poor comments by others on TripAdvisor…… our experience couldn’t have been any better ! Thus 5 stars well deserved.

The food was great at the restaurant but the service was disappointing at the restaurant some of the young girls who were working there were very polite and some could not be bothered. I think they need a little more training in customer service, in future I'll stick to home delivery.

First class fish and chips, freshly cooked and not at all greasy.

They have a sign up saying “blind dogs only” completely in opposition to the 2010 equality act stating that service dogs of all types must be permitted under law to any establishment. As a result of their poor judgement I was rejected from the place despite being physically disabled and in need of my service dog. They did however offer me to eat outside in the 20 mile per hour winds where disabled people belong.

Had the takeaway cod and chips, waited for it to be cooked,so was expecting something special. Fish batter was raw on the inside, so fish not cooked in the middle. Such a shame not cheap had to give to the seagulls. Also overcharged for water two small bottles £3.60. Maybe better service in Restaurant

Absolutely wonderful people here! I’m part of a local group and a quick phone call to check in with them and we have tables reserved for a great meet-up and enjoyable chippy dinner, all cooked fresh.. good portion sizes and no washing up!

Kept me waiting for 45 minutes, saw a waiter drop some of my food on the floor and eat it then just rubbed the vinegar into the carpet

May 2024. 2 medium rock and chips 2 pots of mushy peas 8 pounds 80 ,2 cans Pepsi 4 pounds 40 total bill 38 pounds 50 p. I was shocked at the bill won't be going back again.

Perfect fish and chips. Perfectly done cod, which was also actual proper medium size, not dinky like some places. Chips were lovely and also great portion size. Came together in a box including a salt, vinegar and a freshen-up wipe. I'll definitely be ordering from here again. <3

I went to The Mermaid for a sociable evening with a group I recently joined. Good food, reasonable prices and friendly service.

Prices up, portions down! Large chips used to be twice as many as now. Fish large but batter not crispy at all. Battered sausage barely battered. Food lukewarm at best. Used to our go to fish and chip shop but not anymore. Won’t be ordering from The Mermaid again.

A shame. This Used to be my favourite fish and chip shop. Disgusting prices . £15.50 for large cod and chips. Disgraceful. It used to be £8.20 7 years ago, and adjusted for inflation that is £10.80 today. Plus you give tiny portions of chips for such a high price, you never gave small portions before. You’ll lose your customers with prices that high. The staff were grumpy too. It’s changed hands it seems, and is not as good as it used to be.

Needs better ketchup! That and curry sauce are the two condiments essential to a good supper. Good choice of food. See menu The staff were nice although seems they were a bit bored and grumpy , served quickly and food arrived within 10 minutes. Fish was very good. Batter crispy and light. Bottom of fish a little soggy but was ok. The sausages are really bad quality. Looked like a Richmond sausge pale and tasted horrible. Again the batter was great just couldnt eat it. It's either two small battered pale nasty ones or a large which I havnt tried. Chips were nice but they could be better. The curry sauce was ok. Choice of cold drinks over £2 a can. Coffee is decent. Food is a reasonable price. Small space but we were very happy sitting inside. If it was busier I think it would be uncomfortable eith the main seating area having chairs back to back so close. I realise making the best of the space. They do usualy have outside seating. In a great spot by sea front opposite family entertainment. We have been here before and it was much better so I'm not sure what's changed. Shame but I'd return for the fish and id try the larger herby sausage.

Decent fish and chips option in the harbour area of Hastings and a family favourite for us. Small seating inside and out, classic menu and efficient staff. Recommended!

Fish was awesome but ordered a large and size of chip portion was…upsetting. Chips are literally as cheap as chips. Why give so few? Eh?

Amazing restaurant food blew me away and customer service was very helpful. Highly recommend my personal order was a battered sausage with cheesy chips, sausage was outstanding and chips greatly complimented it. I will be returning!

Absolutely shocking.. had a day out with four men with learning disabilities, they sat down nicely and I asked for four chips, to which the RUDE cook said only if they behave, to which I mentioned they had learning disabilities and left. Disgusting way to approach.

Absolutely awful service took our special needs residents after a day out before we even sat down the man was rude and said we could only stay if we don't cause trouble complete discrimination against disabled

Lovely family meal of great British fish and chips served outside on a beautiful day. Reasonable price and the fish was fresh and very tasty. The chips were cooked just right and all the food was piping hot. A table outside is the order of the day. (British weather dependent)

Having heard good things of the Mermaid fish bar, my partner and I were keen to try their extensive menu, a few choice items from their menu, the chips were ok but the portion small, the battered sausage was quite possibly the worst battered sausage I have had. Way too many herbs thrown in. Most likely wouldn’t go back.

Won’t be ordering from here again 2 nd time our food has gone missing said delivered when hasn’t been. The mermaid staff very unhelpful !! Shame as the food there is good

Use the mermaid all the time for fish and chips. Unfortunately the quality of fish this time was terrible. Overcooked, tasteless pretty sure frozen. Fish cake also poor. Chips lovely. Hope it was just a one off

Couldn't afford fish and chips x 2 as would have been £24+. Had jumbo battered sausage x 2 and a large chips for £12.30ish, Sausages much nicer than normal chip shop fare and chips were fresh and not frozen, all was hot as well.

We visit this area 2 or 3 times a year. Each visit we have cod and chips at this venue. Never been disappointed. All freshly cooked. Loads of fish meat in thin batter. A clean, bright venue with nice staff. We absolutely recommend eating here.

Portion sizes are very small. Ordered a large chips and was more like a medium. When the food arrived it was warm at best. I have ordered from you before and was amazing this time was very disappointing.

Shame we didn’t read the previous review the man was very rude the chips were awful. The takeaway area looked dirty with old oil drums in the window. Would avoid as a waste of money and poor food and service.

This place was amazing! I have been here twice now and both times the fish has had the perfect amount of batter and it has been light. The chips are delicious however the ketchup could be a bit better. I liked the interior and the service was great bearing in mind how small it is and the amount of people there.

Tend to use the Mermaid for fish mainly but tonight added a pie and found it disappointing as the pasty texture was rubbery maybe held on the hot shelf too long

Quite possibly the WORST fish and chips in Hastings! Chips were half cold and undercooked...very pale looking. Fish was OK, rather small given the price point. Lastly, the lady behind the counter is very grumpy and makes you feel unwelcome....overall a terrible experience, and one that is certainly well overpriced! AVOID

Burnt bread bun on the chicken burger , chips and sausage stone cold and the portion sizes are tiny compared to the price ! Wont be ordering fokm here again , very dissapointed
