Very Rude staff! Gherkin was not editable! Uncooked sausage and chips were didgusting! Over priced aswel! Please Avoid! Awful!

Decent fish and chips option in the harbour area of Hastings and a family favourite for us. Small seating inside and out, classic menu and efficient staff. Recommended!

Amazing restaurant food blew me away and customer service was very helpful. Highly recommend my personal order was a battered sausage with cheesy chips, sausage was outstanding and chips greatly complimented it. I will be returning!

Absolutely shocking.. had a day out with four men with learning disabilities, they sat down nicely and I asked for four chips, to which the RUDE cook said only if they behave, to which I mentioned they had learning disabilities and left. Disgusting way to approach.

Lovely family meal of great British fish and chips served outside on a beautiful day. Reasonable price and the fish was fresh and very tasty. The chips were cooked just right and all the food was piping hot. A table outside is the order of the day. (British weather dependent)

Having heard good things of the Mermaid fish bar, my partner and I were keen to try their extensive menu, a few choice items from their menu, the chips were ok but the portion small, the battered sausage was quite possibly the worst battered sausage I have had. Way too many herbs thrown in. Most likely wouldn’t go back.

We visit this area 2 or 3 times a year. Each visit we have cod and chips at this venue. Never been disappointed. All freshly cooked. Loads of fish meat in thin batter. A clean, bright venue with nice staff. We absolutely recommend eating here.

Shame we didn’t read the previous review the man was very rude the chips were awful. The takeaway area looked dirty with old oil drums in the window. Would avoid as a waste of money and poor food and service.

This place was amazing! I have been here twice now and both times the fish has had the perfect amount of batter and it has been light. The chips are delicious however the ketchup could be a bit better. I liked the interior and the service was great bearing in mind how small it is and the amount of people there.

Quite possibly the WORST fish and chips in Hastings! Chips were half cold and undercooked...very pale looking. Fish was OK, rather small given the price point. Lastly, the lady behind the counter is very grumpy and makes you feel unwelcome....overall a terrible experience, and one that is certainly well overpriced! AVOID

We ordered a delivery so many places say they have korkers sausages.And this place actually does the food was lovely.Quite nice they put in salt and vinegar and wipes as well.

Honestly one of the best cod I’ve had in years. Juicy, crispy - perfect! The service was fast, friendly and they even gave us extra chips when asked. We’d been aiming to go to the fancier place next door but I’ll definitely be heading straight to mermaids next time :)

£8 for a large chips?? We couldn't believe our eyes!! Wanted a take away chips to sit on the beach with but my gosh £8?? The man was so rude when we asked what the difference in size portions was, which wasn't much bigger then the small. When we said ok will leave it he said in an aggressive tone I can make you chips in old oil for cheaper! AVOID went just up the road to Mermaid fish and chips was busy but cheaper and nice chips. It explained why it was completely empty

The man that was behind the counter was so rude. £4 for a regular chips or £8 for a large, nowhere else is that expensive so I thought maybe these chips would be amazing. They were vile, had an awful taste to them, like old oil, as if they were reheated from the day before. They were tepid in temperature & cold on the inside. They smelled awful too. The premises are dirty just like the man that served me. Absolutely horrid place, go anywhere but their. Do not go to this place, waste of money.

I had haddock with chips, it was £13.90, quite expensive, but the fish STINKS.

Have been visiting the Mermaid for 40+ years, & despite many changes of staff in that time, the fish & chips are still the best. Good size portions, fresh fish cooked perfectly, & very reasonably priced. Excellent.

Our meal was overally okay. Smaller portions than expected and the battered sausage didn’t taste great. £40. For 4 meals / drinks. Expensive for what it was Staff young - although did their job well Cash only … which is visited last year so was aware off this but come on its 2023. Get a card machine !!!! A family came to the door to find a table. The owner/ manager guy walked over to them and demanded they left the pushchair out side. The restaurant is quite small but me and friend (4 of us ) were the only people in there and they defo was space to collapse and leave the buggy safely. He was very rude to them and in the end they walked off. This is very disheartening as they had a young child with them and clearly just wanted to get some lunch. What happens if someone in a wheelchair turns up. Gonna demand they leave it outside too. Sort it out !!!’

My husband and I decided to take our Daughter and two grandsons to Neptune ,bearing in mind we had not been for a few years and enjoyed our time there .The manager was clearly rude, (realized a change of management), when asked for a glass of tap water, was told the water was warm! What? The toilet was dirty and after washing my hands I would not dry my hands on this dirty hand towel. The meals were fair, but when we realized cash only printed on a piece of paper stuck on the window and one hidden almost near the till, my husband then had to walk over to the AGM machine to pay for the bill, I could go on, but dont want to waste my time typing. Just dont go!!Awful!!!!

We have visited Neptune for many years now and are always pleased with the warm welcome we receive, not to mention the scrumptious fish and chips, always well cooked and flavoursome.

We came to this restaurant for lunch. (During the school holidays) was a fairly large group of 6 adults and 9 kids. The restaurant wasn’t very busy when we turned up so we got seated easily but as the restaurant is small we had to sit on separate tables this was not a problem as we had to do this last time we ate here. However within 5 minutes of sitting down the male ‘manager’ came storming over to my 3 year old son because he was being loud And told him to be quiet took the menu off him and removed the vase of flowers off the table in such a rude manner I couldn’t quite believe it!! He made me feel like my son was so naughty when he wasn’t just purely being a 3 year old!! Anyway we ordered food and drinks and ate our lunch. The younger staff were so good and helpful even though they had the manager being rude and talking down to them I felt so sorry for them you could literally hear everything from the kitchen. When it came to paying we had separate bills. When my sister went to pay hers she asked to have some chips wrapped he shouted at her that our kids were too loud! And we should have had ordered take away as we all ate kids meals! Not the case admittedly 2 of the adults did one because she is pregnant the other unfortunately has a eating disorder! Frankly we were all shocked with how we were treated after spending £150 and eating here previously. Never again disgusting

So where should I start the fish tasted like it had been in the kitchen for 2 weeks. In addition, the lemon you received was very small and obviously old. The fries were also very bad and comparable to fries from the freezer. You have to know for yourself

Fish was disappointing. Tasted frozen rather than fresh. Ordered Haddock but seemed to be Cod. Chips were decent. No draft beer and bottles quite expensive. Wine was reasonable.

Sat outside in the sun. I ate cod and chips; both delicious. But there were a few seagulls eyeing my food. Its located near one of the large car parks on the seafront. Servers were friendly but it was fairly busy.

Food is outstanding, herby battered sausage is a welcome change. Chips are lovely and battered sausage delicious. Would avoid the coffee however as 2.50 for a packet cappuccino is a bit much but enjoyed the food very much regardless.

Fish and chips shops are not exactly scarce in Hastings along the front, however chose this place because of the reviews. We werent dissapointed. The fish was beautifully cooked, beautifully white and not at all greasy. Unlike some where you end up with an almost 30/70 batter to fish ratio this batter was light and crispy and didn't bury the fish. The chips were perfectly cooked with the potatoes tasting fresh with not a hint of that 'old/burnt' oil taste that you can sometimes get. Occasionally in some places kids meals can be lackluster however the children's fishcakes here were large and tasty and the portions generous. Overall it was everything you'd want from a fish and chips meal. Special props also to the staff whom despite it being very busy and a hot day were attentive, friendly and welcoming. If you want a great fish and chips meal, go here!!

In a place with masses of fish and chips emporia, this is a very excellent example. The food was prepared on the spot and really well cooked. Service was quick and friendly. The chips were really tasty and the fish excellent. Curry sauce and mushy peas were also an excellent accompaniment. They don't accept card payment.

We had a very enjoyable lunch at the Neptune. My wife had scampi and I had cod. Both meals were excellent and both meals came with fat free chips. Nice family run place in a good location.

Went in here last Monday with my 2 daughters. Firstly, we were hit with a very strange smell like rotting fish or out-of-date seafood, which was very offputting. The table cloths were sticky and covered in ketchup and mustard. We instantly wanted to leave but...

It’s horrible shop , really rip off and manager is so rude , meal wasn’t tasty at all,taste like microwave food,never been any place in Hastings like there,cash only but don’t tell you before order food .if I can could probably zero out of five...

From the first to the last bite everything was spot on and amazing taste & flavours. Arrived hot & still crispy. The chips were on another level with lots of crunch as chips should be. Well done guys.
