Delicious and good value early dinner just before it got really busy. Catered for my coeliac son with GF chicken nuggets and chips

Very noisy, fish and chips was small portions and very dry with little amount of cod. Cup of tea was tasteless and price was far too much. We will not be returning anytime soon. Very disappointed!!

Nothing really special, I must say. Not a very welcoming staff, and fish burger a bit too oily. On the other hand, good location in front of the sea and next to the lift for the castle. Room for improvements for sure.

My first meal out since having to eat gluten-free. It was super easy, with a gluten free menu and plenty of sauces to choose from. The chips and fish batter were great. The cod itself was a little bit dry. The service was excellent, with very friendly and professional staff.

Popped in for a late lunch with the kids..I had Gluten free haddock which was massive and very tasty! The batter was perfect and my son even decided to try and actually enjoyed it.(he doesn't normally like fish) my other boy was very happy with his cod and chips. We only had tap water, as I think the cans of drink cost too much. Service was a bit sloppy, quite young staff that looked like they'd had enough. I'd say the main let down is the cheap /watered down ketchup they put on the tables...a better brand would make all the difference.

Came in here with family and friends on a Saturday lunchtime and we were really impressed. Great food and service. Toilets were clean too. We had rock, cod, saveloy and a kids nuggets along with chips and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. Batter was lovely and not greasy and the chips were perfect. Staff very welcoming and friendly too.

Fish very fresh,lovely crispy batter.Chips good too with mushy peas along with a nice mug of tea.Quite pricey but that was not what let this fish restaurant down. It was the loud and at times heated discussion going on in the kitchen.Very off putting and distracting.The restaurant was quiet and every customer is a customer. Always nice to wind down and relax but with the constant,over the top voices from the kitchen,did not want to stay for dessert which did look very tempting. Hope the staff reading this will take this review on board as I am sure if you are dining out and paying good money yourselves,atmosphere and ambiance go a long way to feel comfortable. There weren't that many fish & chip shops open in Hastings in January. We'd normally go to the Mermaid Fish bar when we visit Hastings, which is all our no.1 choice, but it's closed in January. So we ended up in this Fish & chip shop instead. What a difference between the 2. This shop charges £14.20 for a 'Large' cod & chips. They classified it as 'Large' but it was a 'Medium' size at best and it was thin, hardly any fish meat. Leanly dipped in batter. Not your usual crispy lumpy bumpy batter, like it was machine dipped then frozen. Also, their chips weren't your typical fish & chip shop chips, all unevenly cut by hand and all shapes and sizes. Theirs were ALL precisley shaped machine cut chips, looked like they came from a frozen bag. In previous images shown on Tripadvisor & on their website, their fish & chip pics look good and to the standard of most local fish & chip shops. So I'm guessing recent new ownership? Whatever the case, as a fish & chip meal, it was the worst for value meal we've eaten in a fish & chip shop. Not just in Hastings, everywhere.

Popped in here mid-October, as per our yearly holiday tradition, while in the area with my husband. We usually and always really love to come here for lunch as it is suitable for me (i have coeliac disease) and the gluten free menu is quite sizeable. We did find the prices high but we guessed cost of living and profiteering had something to do with that, plus we were hungry and again it is very suitable for me. Third year running I had both the best chips I ever have had as well as the nicest curry sauce. The chef explained (as I always ask due to my autism) that he had a separate fryer for my food and our waitress stressed that they would take and do take all measures to avoid cross contamination. We would love coming to Masters!

Ordered beef & onion pie and chips but when it came out, the pie was completely frozen in the middle! So I sent it back & they bought another one out which was piping hot & ok. However, when it came to paying, they refused to knock this off the bill because they’d given a replacement pie! Yes, they did give me another one but any other restaurant would have said that meal is free due to the inconvenience. Also staff were quite rude about it when I asked them to knock this off!

Poor service, food isn’t nice at all. No gluten free batter for chicken nuggets which it says there is on menu. Extra £2 for cheese which comes with hardly any had to ask for more was then asked to pay another £2. Asking for extra 0.50 per sachet of sauce but if you dine in it’s free. Absolute joke.

Probably the worst fish and chip shop in Hastings. Where do I start. First of all I am not a grockle or a day tripper,I have lived in Hastings for over 40 years. I have eaten in most of the fish and chip shops in Hastings over the times. This establishment is the worst I have tried. First the food order . Which totalled over £56 1 large cod and chips. £16.50 2 medium cod and chips.£27.00 1 portion of chips.£5.00 4 slices of bread and (butter). £4.80 3 glasses of draught cola 3 quarters full glasses.( I asked for cans).£3.60 1 can of Lilt. £2.00 The fish and chips was served and to be honest all three looked like childs portions. The fish portions were small, tasteless, thin and dry. One fish was so thin it was just skin and batter. My fish was thin, granular and grey in colour. The boy didn't say a word he just snaffled his bread and chips. We left most of the food uneaten and I went to the till to pay. The girl on the till asked me if I could pay with cash, I said ,sorry I only had my debit card with me. She then asked me if I would like to leave a tip of either 10%, 12.5% or 15%. (I kid you not). I politely declined. This establishment can only be described as extremely poor in every respect. One of my elderly guests described the whole dining experience as nasty! All in all my recommendation of the Master Fish Bar is to avoid it at all cost, Believe me there are better fish bars within walking distance of this place!

We have been there several times. It used to be good. However, recently THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS VERY POOR. Last time we went, as soon as we entered, a young lady greeted us with a very annoyed and disrespectful facial expression including raised eyebrows when asked for the prices upfront. Her tone of voice was 'very bored' . The prices writen outside on their menu are much cheaper than what they say inside. For instance: Fish and chips was apparently £8.99 for takeaway, whereas inside they told us £12.99 (medium takeaway). When asked for mayonese she said looking disturbed : "Oh... yes, 50pence each mini-packet''. They have not changed the prices advertised outside for a long time, even though when I have told them, they knew. This is not ethical! The owner is ok but PROFIT-DRIVEN. When I asked for a fish and chip take away, he gave me the smallest fish I had ever seen. After the awful service of last time, I IMMEDIATELY LEFT and found another place nearby with reasonable prices, delicious food, free mayonese, ketchup, drink and fantastic customer service, where we were served with smiles by helpful staff. The other place had delicious fish and chip with much more reasonable prices.

Chose this fish bar as it advertised Gluten free, decided to eat in, friendly host/waitress. Chose food, expected a wait as one of us ordered GF but food arrived quickly, all four meals were perfect, Gluten free vinegar was brought with the meal without asking. The service was very good, friendly, checked all was ok, the place was busy but coped superbly. Reasonably priced too. A well deserved 5 stars and will definitely be visiting again.

We decided to go to this fish and chips shop as we were getting hungry and I had never ever tried gluten free cod before.The food was absolutely delicious,very nice fish and crispy batter also chips were outstanding as well,and if you put salt and vinegar on it it really adds more taste.The halloumi was great as well.The staff were extremely friendly and took our experience to new heights,they were always polite and they got me a fresh bowl of chips when I accidentally poured the wrong vinegar over my chips(be careful about the vinegar if you are gluten free as the vinegar is different,although it says gluten free it’s so easy to pick up the wrong one by accident!).Also they had a paper bag as well to take out as I had been given a really big portion and I had a ticket to the cinema and didn’t have all the time in the world.That is such a good idea.Also they even did drinks that normal restaurants don’t do.I love this place and hope to come back soon

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 children..The prices in this shop are really high for the area,Extortionate actually! The food portions were all like child portions... I thought they had made a mistake when they brought our standard cod and chips over...lol about 10 grotty chips and a floppy bit of fish.... The kids meals were tiny also, our 9 year old was still hungry after.. I think the attitude of the staff was like they could not care less about anything but paying your bill! wont be going back in there, will look for a better shop in which i am sure there are many whom give real portions of food for the money.

We've visited this restaurant recently and very much enjoyed the food and service. However, tonight the restaurant fell well short. When we arrived tables were left uncleared restricting our choice of seating and during the ten minutes of waiting for service we were not even acknowledged, so we left unnoticed, as we came in !

Visited here 14th July. Extremely disappointed. Ordered large cod & chips and medium cod & chips. Both pieces looked same size but medium thicker! Chips looked like they had been cooked previously then put back in the fryer to warm. Wouldn't recommend

Stopped here during a car club drive out. Good menu choice. Food cooked to order, so given buzzer to signal its ready. Loads of table benches outside overlooking the sea. Very tasty - forgot to take pic until halfway through eating!

I loved funding a fish and chips place in Hastings serving gluten free options.

Perfect location and super friendly staff. Dogs are welcome inside the restaurant. Food quality is exceptional. I highly recommend Cod with chips at this restaurant.

After a hectic weekend camping close by and everything packed away, we needed something to fill our hungry tummies. Very quick and considered service; we went for traditional cod and chips with mushy peas. Kids were very satisfied with sausage and chips and we had a side of curry sauce to appease our northern friends too!

Quick Summary; We've eaten here twice now and we have to admit, it's incredibly expensive... But there are very few places that offer gluten and dairy free cod and chips and even fewer that offer a nice one and that's where this place excels! Detailed Summary; I eat both but am trying to cut down on my gluten and dairy intake so I'm a pretty good judge in terms of someone who can tell you about recent experiences of both rather than someone like my partner who hasn't had glutenous / dairy food in many years due to her intolerances. Both myself and my partner went for a large cod and chips each and at over £16 (just over £2 more than the glutenous large cod and chips) it's pretty damn expensive, but the batter is light which is pretty rare for gluten free, it has a nice rich taste (again not as delicious as a really good glutenous alternative, but definitely on par with a lower end glutenous batter which may not sound like high praise but it really is!). The cod itself was actually very tasty, you could tell it's nice and fresh and is on par with getting cod and chips in a posh restaurant, this really helps boost the experience and makes it worthwhile. The chips are cooked in a separate fry vat so as to not cross contaminate with the glutenous chips and again they are very nice although for me as I was having a large cod and chips, I felt the portion size was more like a standard portion of chips. I also ordered bread and butter which oddly enough is listed on the gluten free side of the menu but I was told it's not gluten free... So that was a bit odd! And at £1.20 I expected at least 2 slices so I could make a while sandwich rather than half a sandwich but no, just 1 slice... It was nice though. We also ordered dessert at the start of the meal to come out once we were done but after waiting a long time after they took our plates, that never arrived so we just paid and went without so service could have been better in that sense, though everyone seemed nice and friendly. All in all at over £40 for the pair of us including drinks, the meal plus my partner also had curry sauce and a gerkin, it's an expensive fish and chip shop, but as one of the only gluten-free fish and chip venues to actually offer a nice meal I'd eat here again, just not too often at those prices.

Not masterful. The sit down restaurant was nice and spacious in terms of tables spread out. The staff were attentitive and the atmosphere was nice. More crisp than potato. 3 adult meals and a kids meal was nearly £60. Far too expensive for the food that is served up.

If you're hungry and need to eat, this is a good place to go. You get food, and you have a roof over your head. We had fish and chips, which was quite basic.
