Healthy way to have a fish and chips. Grilled and tasty. Was fresh, well cooked. Also, waitress friendly and helpful. Recommended

Apart from being clean this place has nothing going for it. Very expensive. Small portions of food. The lad who served us was nice, unlike the old guy (possible owner) who looked like he was chewing on a wasp. Please if you want good food and big portions served with a smile go to Cod Father a few doors along

Visited on a busy Saturday lunchtime during bank holiday weekend in a large group of 9. The two young ladies who served us were so polite, friendly and welcoming. It made such a difference to our meal. Food was also great - we will definitely visit again, especially for the gluten free option.

Good fish and chips good service

I was disappointed with the food. Myself and 2 kids ordered 2 kids cod and chips and a battered savaloy and chips to takeaway. We ate them straight away by the beach. Unfortunately for us, the cod batter was soggy, instead of crispy and crunchy, and the chips were tasteless and very unsatisfying. The staff and service was good, however the food was a big let down. I won't be eating there again.

This place is a joke - STEER CLEAR (Especially if you’re gluten free). I went in for the first time to get a gluten free takeaway only to be told by one of the girls they were “too busy to do take away” and if I wanted food I’d have to stay. I said what difference does it make as you need to cook it whether I stay or take it away? She shrugged and so I left disappointed. I then read a few good reviews and decided to try the place again and dine in this time with my Mum and again it was unfortunately a terrible experience where they gave me a menu that stated clearly at the bottom “everything gluten free” and then several things I tried to order they told me had gluten in so the menu is incorrect and dangerous for people who become ill from gluten and they also overcharged us by £12 and I’ve seen this happen to other people. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

What a find in Hastings! Great place to eat gluten-free fish and chips .highly recommend here. Looked around different places and stumbled across this restaurant. I'm glad !! They do takeaway as well. Friendly staff and service. 5 🌟 from me

The place was so nice and cozy! We went in and sat down; it felt like I was in a very old restaurant. We came from Germany and had a stop here to try some British cuisine. The food was very good, especially the Cod & Chips we ordered. We waited only 8 minutes for our food, and the service was excellent! I could ask for recommendations and discuss their options with the staff. The breading of the fish was amazing and fresh, and the chips were crispy and fluffy. I was surprised that water in the UK is free. In Germany, it costs about 2£! Here, the water tasted a bit like chlorine, which makes sense as England has chlorine in their water. However, the orange juice tasted weird to one of my friends. Overall, the restaurant was amazing, and I'd love to come back here when I revisit this place in my future travels. I'd give it 4.6/5 stars. (I didn't have a picture of the inside sadly, but here's a picture of the Hastings Beach)

Some of the best fried fish I have ever eaten. The cod roe was beautifully moist, as was the haddock. My friends loved the grilled sea bass and the salad. Service was excellent.

Traditional food of good quality and big portions. Very good grilled and fried fish and great salad. Would be better to consider a bigger calamari portion. Overall a very nice choice in Hastings! Would recommend it!

A very nice and tasty fish and chips restaurant

DOG FRIENDLY!!!! They actually had Battered Saveloys on the menu which is incredibly rare normally you have to ask specifically for them! Every single item of food I ordered was absolutely amazing their curry sauce is the best I've ever had in my 31 years on this planet chips and Battered Saveloy were gorgeous and their onion rings were the best I've had in about 10 years!! Would recommend to everyone who visits Hastings and who lives there. If I was a Michelin guy I'd give them 3 stars which is the highest rating.

Chips tasted like are cheep frozen chips sasuges tasteless gravy was watery, not a dipping thick gravy. And £2.30 for coke from a pump disgraceful, this place used to be good but not anymore.

Gluten free fish and chips - game changer! I had a good sized portion and it all tasted fantastic, to be honest the portion defeated me! However, I am not suffering with the bloating that can sometimes happen when it comes to fish and chips! Mushy peas were good too. I was happy with my meal, worth every penny. My fella finished his portion and the battered sausage he had ordered saying it was all really good food. Service was really good, waitress was very nice and polite. We will definitely be again next time we are in Hastings.👍

Terible experience at this place went today ordered chease burgers and chips 20 minit wait wasent to bad then good turned up wrong order chicken burgers and chips .said to waitress I ordered chease burger and chips so she went back to kitchen came back out with food and handed it to us and said chef said they had no burgers so he done me chicken burgers instead what a compleate load of rubbish .I said to her chef dident like you making mistake so he dident want to waist food and cook my order she said no that wasent it.Anyway my partner was there so I excepting the food rather than arque.went up to pay to I presume one of thee owners she said was everythink okay I said it was cooked well but wasent what I ordered and I'm anoyed that rather than own up to your mistake you lied to me because you dident want to waist food or cook more paid full price with no apology thee woman had a terible attitude chef hid in kichen will be avoiding at all cost in future plenty of outher fish and chip shops around cheaper and just as good .

Amazing gluten free fish and chips, would highly recommend. Good size portions for adults and child’s portions were huge. Excellent customer service too.

I'm sorry but £3.90 for a takeaway portion of anaemic, stodgy chips, which took 20 minutes to arrive, is a total rip-off!

Bought 2 x gluten-free cod and chips to take away at lunchtime. The place was empty adapt from a seated family with noisy kids running around. The server asked me if I wanted salt and vinegar and after confirming the vinegar was gluten-free I asked for it on our food. When we got back to the car (parked quite a way away) to eat it there was no salt and vinegar so the food tasted bland. Considering the fact that the place was empty and the server specifically asked me if I wanted salt and vinegar, this was very poor service especially at it cost nearly £30. Why can nobody do their job properly and with care any more?

The restaurant was empty, and I ordered to take it out. Cooked fresh, the haddock and chips were in abundance. Didn't rate the peas. It was expensive at £17 when I could have gotten the same thing for £14.50. It was nice and fresh, though. You need better folks to take out the small traditional wood ones that are useless.

I ordered for a family of 4 , the chips had been recooked and wasn't nice ,the fish did not taste like cod and smelt very fishy like it was old , payed 54 pounds. Never again this was midweek. Server was nice and polite.

Sausages are the cheapest I have ever tasted. Cooking oil smells old The good news is that the Cod was lovely, such a shame, could be very good, just use better quality sausages

Opens early. Very nice and clean place! Plenty of tables inside and a few outside. Service is nice. Toilets are cleaner and better than in other places.

Despite the signage clearly saying take away was available, the rather unhelpful young lady who greeted us said they were too busy for us to have a take away. The restaurant area was far from full and all we wanted was a portion of gluten free chips! Since this is the only gluten free fish and chip place in Hastings, this was a big disappointment.

Absolute rip off £17 for a small take away fish and 4 slices of bread £1.30 per sluce off bread had cheak to say it will be a little cheaper if no butter

The battered haddock was simply fantastic.. It's a bit of a trek from manchester, but rest assured we will be back when next in hastings

Took my family to eat here for the second time and the consistency of the quality of the food was exactly the same. It’s the best fish and chips I have tasted! Not oily and cooked perfectly with lovely chips, crispy on the outside and beautifully soft inside. Portion sizes were great too. Got to mention the curry sauce too which was really tasty and moreish. This is going to be our go to place whenever we are down I. Hastings visiting family 😃

Disappointed. I used eat here every visit, the portions used to be generous and the price was decent. It's been revamped and looks great, clean and airy and the waitresses are attentive. Unfortunately the portions are mean and expensive..large cod is not even a medium! (although tasty) I had salad instead of chips ( as I always used to) 1/4 tomato, 2 slices of cucumber a a few mixed leaves.. I thought it was the garnish! Couldn't believe it, I wasn't even full when we left!! Won't be going back I'm afraid. I think the owner must have posted the food photos.. our food came on normal round plates.. Considering the very high competition in this area of ​​the country on fish & chips in this restaurant I did not find anything particularly special. The place is reasonably clean, even the bathrooms, the staff is always on the move and keeps the place tidy and clean. The cod is good, but the calamari and scampi are not, really ugly and rubbery. Chips that you can also make at home. The menu needs to be changed and in addition to good quality cod you need to invest in other seafood such as calamari, fresh prawns of course.

Excellent cod n chips, grilled option great. Had run out of haddock, plaice and salmon as it was late in the day. Very good chilled rosé wine, excellent service.

Will never visit this bar again!!! We were attracted by the food photos displayed outside the bar, and the reasonable price. But the food served was only one third amount of the photo shows. A total scam on quantity!!!

The Master Fish Bar was located very conveniently with a view of the ocean. There was enough parking on the side of the road. The staff was incredibly friendly from the start. They were very attentive and polite. The ambience was nice and clean. We ordered multiple different dishes, and they were all great. I personally loved the Haddock & chips. The portion was massive. Had a lovely time there. And I'm so happy that we were able to get a table for 08 under very short notice. Highly recommended.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere, fabulous food with a wide range. The staff were friendly, attentive and service was excellent. Small chips nearly defeated me, and I was hungry! Great place.

Gluten free fish and chips was excellent

Disappointing large cod, wasn’t large at all and was dry. This was our first visit and the cod was nothing like where we normally go. Mum had grilled plaice which she enjoyed but portion was very small. Restaurant was extremely hot which did spoil the atmosphere. Waitresses were very nice. Cutlery was left in bulk on the tables for customers to help themselves which isn’t hygienic at all. Overall not worth the money

This is an additional to my review in June 2024 . My suggestion is that they should have someone like Gordon Ramsey to show them about customer service. The food is good, restaurant is extremely clean and beautiful at a perfect location but lacks good customer service. With great customer service that restaurant will do far better.

Lovely gluten-free fish and chips

Quiet expensive compared to others in the area. But the food is very good.

Fantastic food. Really light and fluffy chips. No bones to pick through and the fish fell apart as u ate it. Reasonably priced, fast and friendly service. Great decor, fantastic fish and chip shop.

The plaice and chips were delicious and it's dog friendly

As a local fish and chip shop this was excellent. Table seating with gluten-free options. Clean, well run with decent portion sizes. The chunky chips were up to par and the fish portions are respectable, not the usual batter-enhanced plate over-hangers as can usually be found today. The focus is on quality rather than quantity. Would recommend for dog owners too as they seemed to be welcome inside.

Excellent, my wife rarely gets to enjoy fresh gluten free fish and chips. The staff are friendly and the food was excellent.

Really disappointed with this visit. The service was good so this is nothing against the staff. However, the food left a lot to be desired. The fish was poor, with little fish and a very thin layer of batter. The chips were a very small portion and tasted stale. The worst came with the curry and gravy which was heavily diluted and watery. They did not taste good and we ended up leaving them. The pricing is very high for what is lacklustre food. We will pass on this place next time.

Have eaten here a few times, and usually all is great. Food quality was absolutely amazing, cannot fault it. However we ordered 3 large cod, which we have had previously, as was underwhelmed with the portion size. Staff was overwhelmed and didn’t seem to know if they were coming or going. All were polite, but such a shame that it didn’t seem like she knew what she was doing.

Okay, I felt prices were quite high. £15:50 Fish & Chips & a Cuppa Charlie.

A large group of us went here for fish and chips. My husband and I ordered large cod and chips, and when it arrived, my husband was large. Mine was a medium. On the same table our friends ordered cod and chips 1 with batter 1 without batter. The 1 with batter was a medium that she ordered but was the same size as mine. We agreed that mine was clearly a medium. Moving on to the next table beside us, 1 of our friends ordered large cod and chips and it was large. I question the server about the sizes. He said we'll all fishes are different sizes, I said I know that. I said I asked for large and got medium he said it was large I said no its the same size as the lady on my table and it's a medium. Not happy with being charged for a large when I got a medium. So the manager should state on menu small medium large and extra large cod.

Polite staff. Quick service. Very helpful. Not intrusive Does gluten free options . Example vinegar, cod, chips, calamari, nuggets and more.  Cooked in separate fryer. Nice cold glass. They keep them in the fridge. Has a coffee machine. Cold drinks and alcohol. Looks very clean and bright. 50 plus seating available. Righ opposite the sea side. Go kart and other entertainment area Hot food . Cod roe. Lovely and crispy very fresh. Chips not very crispy but fluffy inside Sausage not alot of flavour but Crispy batter. Gravy . Thin. Leaves a burn not quite like the real fish and chip curry sauce but it was still nice. Ketchup to sweet. Overall we did enjoy it and would return

Nothing really special, I must say. Not a very welcoming staff, and fish burger a bit too oily. On the other hand, good location in front of the sea and next to the lift for the castle. Room for improvements for sure.

My first meal out since having to eat gluten-free. It was super easy, with a gluten free menu and plenty of sauces to choose from. The chips and fish batter were great. The cod itself was a little bit dry. The service was excellent, with very friendly and professional staff.

Popped in for a late lunch with the kids..I had Gluten free haddock which was massive and very tasty! The batter was perfect and my son even decided to try and actually enjoyed it.(he doesn't normally like fish) my other boy was very happy with his cod and chips. We only had tap water, as I think the cans of drink cost too much. Service was a bit sloppy, quite young staff that looked like they'd had enough. I'd say the main let down is the cheap /watered down ketchup they put on the tables...a better brand would make all the difference.

Came in here with family and friends on a Saturday lunchtime and we were really impressed. Great food and service. Toilets were clean too. We had rock, cod, saveloy and a kids nuggets along with chips and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. Batter was lovely and not greasy and the chips were perfect. Staff very welcoming and friendly too.

Fish very fresh,lovely crispy batter.Chips good too with mushy peas along with a nice mug of tea.Quite pricey but that was not what let this fish restaurant down. It was the loud and at times heated discussion going on in the kitchen.Very off putting and distracting.The restaurant was quiet and every customer is a customer. Always nice to wind down and relax but with the constant,over the top voices from the kitchen,did not want to stay for dessert which did look very tempting. Hope the staff reading this will take this review on board as I am sure if you are dining out and paying good money yourselves,atmosphere and ambiance go a long way to feel comfortable. Sadly it has put me off returning even though the food was good.

There weren't that many fish & chip shops open in Hastings in January. We'd normally go to the Mermaid Fish bar when we visit Hastings, which is all our no.1 choice, but it's closed in January. So we ended up in this Fish & chip shop instead. What a difference between the 2. This shop charges £14.20 for a 'Large' cod & chips. They classified it as 'Large' but it was a 'Medium' size at best and it was thin, hardly any fish meat. Leanly dipped in batter. Not your usual crispy lumpy bumpy batter, like it was machine dipped then frozen. Also, their chips weren't your typical fish & chip shop chips, all unevenly cut by hand and all shapes and sizes. Theirs were ALL precisley shaped machine cut chips, looked like they came from a frozen bag. In previous images shown on Tripadvisor & on their website, their fish & chip pics look good and to the standard of most local fish & chip shops. So I'm guessing recent new ownership? Whatever the case, as a fish & chip meal, it was the worst for value meal we've eaten in a fish & chip shop. Not just in Hastings, everywhere.

Popped in here mid-October, as per our yearly holiday tradition, while in the area with my husband. We usually and always really love to come here for lunch as it is suitable for me (i have coeliac disease) and the gluten free menu is quite sizeable. We did find the prices high but we guessed cost of living and profiteering had something to do with that, plus we were hungry and again it is very suitable for me. Third year running I had both the best chips I ever have had as well as the nicest curry sauce. The chef explained (as I always ask due to my autism) that he had a separate fryer for my food and our waitress stressed that they would take and do take all measures to avoid cross contamination. We would love coming to Masters!

Ordered beef & onion pie and chips but when it came out, the pie was completely frozen in the middle! So I sent it back & they bought another one out which was piping hot & ok. However, when it came to paying, they refused to knock this off the bill because they’d given a replacement pie! Yes, they did give me another one but any other restaurant would have said that meal is free due to the inconvenience. Also staff were quite rude about it when I asked them to knock this off!

Not good. Tiny cod. Suppose to be large.. Chips some were hard threw half away. Wouldn't go there again
