Brilliant pub good beer weird landlord, he dont like reggae. Lovely wife and children though. Real ale perfect.

Excellent selection of drinks on tap, pump and in cans or bottles. The homemade pizzas are deliciously filling. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff team. The music events (mainly Saturday evenings) are always good and popular, with superb local Sussex musicians across a varied rock spectrum. Fortnightly Wed open mic is also popular, with some interesting acts and some regulars.

Great place, great management, the server Sara was very nice her stories of her adventures with her dog made my day, Sara loved exploring the woods near her home with her loyal dog, Archie. One sunny afternoon, they stumbled upon a hidden, sparkling stream. As Sara dipped her toes into the cool water, Archie barked excitedly and splashed around. They discovered an old, wooden bridge that led to a beautiful meadow filled with wildflowers. It became their secret haven, where Sara would read stories aloud, and Archie would chase butterflies, making memories that would last a lifetime. Great beer, great food and great company

What an awesome pub! Old school pub, great selection of beers, fabulous pizzas, lovely staff, beer garden and always an awesome local band on Saturday night that gets the whole pub rocking.

Excellent choice of real ales, best in Horsham and good pizza's as well. Staff are also excellent, the perfect hosts.

A great and proper pub with friendly staff and locals with a good sized patio garden that catches the afternoon sun. 6 cask ales and quality lagers rather than the usual stuff found everywhere else. They also have a good selection of Whisky, Bourbon and Tequilas. If you think tequila is just a rough shot for the end of the night, think again. Just ask Sam for an education. Pizzas are great and some of the best chips around. Live music every Saturday plus regular open mics and additional events on bank holiday weekends.

Nice pub and nice selection of booze. Both lads on the bar were very polite. My hotel room card must have fallen out of my pocket while in the pub and a minute or two after leaving we heard one of them (Louis) sprinting up the street to give it back to me. Top class service!

Great little boozer with friendly service. Pizza looked good and they were setting up for a band on sat eve. Atmosphere was fun, wish we could have stayed longer. Decent amount of parking out the back too.

Really great place, good selection of guest / craft beer. However three reason you should go is the pizzas: a great set of pizzas, perfect for lunch or dinner. Some are super spicy, which works well with a pint!

Always love open mic nights! Good atmosphere, definitely a pub for a slightly older generation, not many teens, mostly ale and stouts with the odd Lagar, bitter and one cider on draft. Locally sourced drafts and kegs. Italian style pizza served 12-9pm 😋.

Nice pub vibes. Live music there often and the staff are friendly and attentive. You're never left with countless glasses on your table like in some places. They always clear the table. The food here (or at least the pizzas and chips) we're really nice!

This pub has been always good for live music but in my opinion its even better... When the landlord loves it.. FACT... Don't get me wrong there is a strong metal, grunge feel to a lot of it so if not your bag... Saying that though when packed really good atmosphere and you got a garden... The beer is good and different... Guinness is £5 a pint so chuffed... Last went easter Sunday and it was top notch music, crowd and the staff didn't miss a beat... The landlord can play too.. Very good

Amazing new additions to the menu-beer tapas! Who knew that was a thing!!! Yummy. Beer cheese, Mac n cheese in dips, spicy cauliflower with dips and chips with Katsu curry sauce -oof! Sam has added some lovely stuff to the menu-pizzas are also amazing, MC is a great sales lady, team is consistently great, beers are always good. Thanks MS for being keeping us going-Friday night teas sorted !

Great stone baked pizza, great music, great beer, and a great appreciation for our canine friends. If you want a place that's warm and friendly, you'd be hard pressed to find one better in Horsham.

We had a drink here midweek and the atmosphere was good. There was a good selection of beers on draught.

While the pub is tied and somewhat limited with it's choice of cask, it makes up for it with great cellering. There's also a fantastic curated selection of bottled & canned beer. It's everything a pub should be. Wish I was in there more often.

My first visit and although the beer was a very decent pint must confess was a little disappointed especially after the build up ,that The Malt Shovel was the home of real ale..Again the range and selection of beers was very good, although the decor and furnishings looked tired and the various model skeletons did nothing to enhance the place.Will definitely return,as it might just be me having an off day.

It was our first visit here got there about 21:30 on a Thursday there were a few people in, we had our dogs with us and asked if it was OK, they said it was no problems and all dogs are welcome as long as they bring their owners. There was a fairly large beer selection and I settled for a Pale Ale which was lovely, the bar staff were great and they obviously liked their job, just the right kind of people who should be in the service industry, and it made for a very enjoyable evening.

The ales are fantastic and come from the very best of the local brewers. The pub is a basic boozer and wonderful for it. Sam, the landlord, is a proper landlord and, if he refuses anyone service like a previous reviewer, it was undoubtedly because those people don't know how to behave in public. Keep it up, Sam, you're running a great place.

Been here quite a few times over the last 2 years & would visit a lot more if it were nearer! Staff have always been friendly, especially the landlord, & service is quick even when they’re really busy. Has a great atmosphere & they have some great bands on. Good choice of local ales too if you’re a beer drinker. Cant recommend it enough :)

Went for a night out with friends. Got asked to leave as bar staff refused to serve doubles & had no explanation as to why. We dared to challenge and got asked to leave. Landlord extremely rude & up himself. Could not even justify his own actions. A joke. Would not recommend, based on that experience.

Great proper boozer with live band every Saturday.Visited this pub for the first time on 8-12-18With my daughter and boyfriend. We had a great night and found the landlord and staff a very friendly crowd, and the band were very good too.keep on doing it Sam its a great traditional old pub.

Stayed in a nearby hotel and collected the keys from here. All a bit odd however the landlord was very helpful and friendly. Also let a couple of us park our cars in his car park overnight which was very helpful and also very considerate. Had a few pre-dinner drinks before heading off into town for some food.

Good place for an honest pint. No gloss, no gimmicks. Real ales, a few craft ciders, bar snacks, lite bites. Dog friendly.

Very basic pub, food choice is dire, the owner is incredibly rude. Waste of a visit. Would not recommend, as Horsham has way better options than this!!

Always welcomed with a smile here. Called in last night to the "Open mike " session. Was fun and lively , service still swift ! Enjoyed ourselves .

Traditional English pub. Reasonable range of draught beer. I recommend the American Pale Ale. Their pizzas are not too bad.

This is a a pub where you go for real ale, properly kept and served. It has a traditional atmosphere, friendly and efficient landlord and staff and even now does basic food to soak up the excellent real ales.

This brilliant real ale boozer now does pizza and I mean proper pizza hand made and cooked to order in their own pizza oven. Pizzas can also be made to be taken away if you so desire but given the excellent friendly atmosphere and wonderful selection of wines and beers I have not found the need.

Regular visitors on a Friday - friendly, quick and tasty. Menu is limited but whatever you try its super. Very good range of beers on tap as well.

Los niños bien educados son bienvenidos mal educados no son adultos. La cerveza es excelente (con ocho motores de cerveza) y una Camra 2016 del premio año pub. La comida es simple, abundante y sangrientos. El propietario le encanta la música en vivo (no de seguridad) pero duke aquí él hizo a la escuela británico.

Nada sobre este pub de moda. Simplemente genial ale, real, todavía tiene una patada que sidra, y un ambiente de un tiempo que por desgracia falta en la mayoría de los pubs de hoy. No estoy hablando de nostalgia por los buenos tiempos de la OLE. Estoy hablando de un producto, un servicio verdaderamente amable, y un propietario que tiene una pasión para una ale.

Es un pub fabuloso en Horsham. Un pub por derecho propio con un personal amable, una gran selección de cerveza y ale y buena música. El menú de cocina del Caribe es la guinda, es muy razonable y tiene un sabor fresco caseras hasta los platos que me dejó con ganas de volver y probar de nuevo. Un excelente pub para pasar el rato.

Noches fantásticas de música, una excelente selección de cervezas y sidras y un señor carismático tierra y personal hacen de este boozer, bien merece una visita, la comida de la calle alma sirven también vale la pena probar

I have to say out of all the pubs I've been too the malt shovel is up there with the best pubs. Extremely friendly and welcoming! The landlord and his wife are extremely welcoming and pleasant to talk to. He has a fantastic team of bar staff who always serve very quickly never left waiting plus they are great fun and a top laugh. The live music is great! They always seem to have a great selection of ales that are kept really well, not many pubs have such a good selection of good beer! Also the food they serve is amazing! Would recommend eating their soul food menu! All in all one of the best pubs I have ever stepped in! Great beer, fantastic staff, delicious food! Would recommend anyone to visit!

Great pub as I always remembered it from my youth when it was The Mitchell. I had a great pint of IPA and a Soul Street Food Sharing Platter as did my colleague, my Son had Ribs and Fried Chicken both of which were exceptionaly good!! Will definately be retutning for a few pints and some great food soon.

Just popped in for a quick drink before an Indian meal and was pleasently surprised. Excellent service with a publican who was genuinely interested in giving good service. Stayed for longer than we expected. Clean, friendly and they even put canldes on a ll the tables! Glad we went!

Just wanted to say that although this is a lovely pub they only serve food on certain nights so beware you may need to eat elsewhere!

I recently had 3 of the best pints of Real Ale in a long time in the Malt Shovel. There are good local pubs that serve good beer but I have to say the beer in the Malt Shovel is a cut above the rest, just superb. The landlord and barman were friendly as were the locals. The landlord really knows about looking after beer and clearly deeply cares about serving the very best quality.

I am tired of pubs with oversized stuffed chairs, designer bottled beers, and staff whose Christian names are surnames,i.e. Finlay or Crawford. The landlord of the Shovel is called Sam. An honest, friendly bloke who serves several, local, real ales. Good cider, some nice wines. The decor is simple and traditional. If you are looking for a REAL pub. Look no further.

This is a great pub for Mothers Day visit as it won't be full of grannies, mothers kids etc just local drinkers. Beer always been good do basic pub grub but not much choice.

Aunque al final acabé entrando con un amigo porque colgaron un cartel que rezaba: "las mejores hamburguesas caseras de la ciudad" un martes cualquiera y claro, no iba yo a repetir sitio tan seguido...Volviendo al tema The Malt Shovel, también conocido como "The Michele" por su antigua dueña, es una de las pocas Free House de la zona. Cuentan lo lugareños (con acceso a Internet) que el término Free House se acuña a finales del siglo 18 o principios del 19 cuando las grandes destilerías empiezan a atar por contrato a los pubs a los que suministran la bebida. La regla era sencilla: si el dueño de un pub quería vender una cerveza de una marca no podía vender de las de la competencia. Esto se traduce en que en "Malt Shovel" tiene libertad para elegir las cervezas que sirven y así siempre hay algo nuevo que probar.El local en si es muy coqueto, con mesas de madera y un par de chimeneas en lado opuestos del mismo, una barra en forma de L y un par de faroles de cobre en la entrada. También tienen una pequeña terraza en la parte de atrás con media docena de bancos. Los sábados hay música en directo, aunque también tienen días de micro abierto y una diana para jugar a los dardos si te haces colega del dueño.Las hamburguesas no valen mucho: pequeñas, secas y nada baratas. Eso si, las patatas que las acompañaban si que estaban buenas. Y no dejéis de consultar la pizarra con la selección de cervezas del dueño.La verdad es que un sitio agradable, muy recomendable para ir a tomar unas pintas y escuchar música en directo.Prometo intentar volver un miércoles al grupo de debate.
