The Malt Shovel in Harrogate

We were staying at a local caravan site and popped here for an evening meal. It was one of the nicest meals out we have had in a long time. The food was delicious, staff were so friendly and welcoming and the pub was gorgeous. I had the lemon chicken (photo), my husband had the pork belly and my daughter had the children's chicken strips. All of these were divine! Our dog was very happy here too! We will definitely be back when we are in the area.

First visit, just popped in for a hot drink. Very warm welcome from Laura on entering. Nice wood burning stove pushing out heat into the bar area. Quite busy for a thursday lunchtime, everyone seemed to be eating. Food looked amazing at it came out. Coffee was very nice. Booked for New Year's Eve, can't wait. 2nd visit. Attended NYE celebrations. Food was amazing, guitarist very good. Great service & atmosphere. Definitely be rebooking for 2024. 3rd visit now. Went for lunch, very busy Friday lunch. Great lunch menu & new winter menu. Some lovely dishes took ages to decide. Opted for prawn & crab cocktail, king prawn tempura, mains we had haddock goujons & duck breast, managed pudding for one Sticky Toffee Pudding. All the food was delicious. Can't praise the chef enough. As always looked after by Laura. We will return. Thanks. 4th visit. Another faultless lunch at The Malt Shovel. Lovely returning welcome from Laura. Great choice on the menu, no rush which we enjoy. Highly recommend liver & onions , also Cajun Chicken sandwich and soup combo. Great roast lunch, lots of choice on menu. Recommend the malt mix ( choice of 3 meats from 4). All served with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese sauce, roast carrots & parsnips, kale , gravy boat of gravy & yorkshire pudding. Delicious. Another lovely meal and experience, all under the eagle eye of Laura. Definitely worth a visit, but book as it's very busy. Thanks .

What a place! The atmosphere was lovely, I got a warm welcome. The FOOD! Was delicious. I drove 40mins to get there and it was worth every minute.

This place never ceases to amaze me with the outstanding food and service it provides. When we arrived at the Malt Shovel it was absolutely heaving with diners. No wonder as I cannot think of any other establishment offering 3 courses of absolute gastro food for £19-95. We had the Patè for starters, the smoothest tastiest we have ever had. To follow we had Haddock Goujons with chips peas and tartar sauce. The fish was as white as snow and the batter lite and crispy. Chips amazing, don't know how James cooks them but they are so tasty and a superb accompaniment for the Haddock. For dessert we had Rice Pudding and winter fruit compote, a lovely rich dish to finish off the meal. The Malt Shovel team work their fingers to the bone to serve up outstanding food and hospitality, they deserve all the success and praise they get. Well done Malt shovel team, you are all Bloody awesome!

A lovely venue in the heart of an outstanding village. A warm welcome , cosy atmosphere, well presented appetising meal. Popular and recommended.

The food was excellent! We had 3 courses and each one was amazing all done to a very high standard. The atmosphere was great, not noisy, and had a lovely log burner going. The service was great The girls were very friendly and were very on the ball with making sure our needs were met, clearing dishes away and making sure we had drinks. I would highly recommend and look forward to going back there again soon.

A small pub/restaurant out in the middle of nowhere with superb food. We enjoyed everything we ordered from entrees to mains. The veal liver was excellent. Highly recommended.

Seems overrated in our experience. For example the potatoes with the belly pork were cold. Even they had been warm we’ve had better at the same price point elsewhere

Visited for a family members 90th birthday. We are from Lincolnshire and travelled over for Sunday lunch. First thing, the staff were so friendly and could not do enough for us, you could see it was the same for each table. Lots of smiling faces, and the biggest are the girls that work there. The second thing is probably the best Sunday lunch I have been out for in a long, long time. The meat is cooked to perfection, the veg is cooked to perfection, and a good selection and the roast potatoes are amazing. Unfortunately we didn't try the starters but they looked great and I bet they tasted that too. Last thing the puddings, well we did sample these and the selection is great and what else can I say? A great follow on from the main course. And did I say how good the staff are? All in all a great great meal in lovely surroundings.

Friendly and caring staff. Had a large family meal and all food was correct and served together. Was all delicious also! Great service and atmosphere, very nice decor inside. Plenty of parking but on street parking too if car park full.

We arrived early but our table was ready. We sat beside a massive log burner. The waitress was lovely, full of friendly banter and kindness. The mulled wine was delicious. I'm gluten free, which really wasn't an issue for the team. I had sea bass fillet on a bed of creamy mashed potato with lemon sauce. For of us ordered this and loved it. My son had fish and chips which he devoured. There were treats for the dog, baby changing facilities and a high chair, so we were well catered for. My only criticism would be my family for not wanting a dessert. Pah. Massive thanks to the team.

Really cosy country pub with friendly staff and tasty food. The Sunday lunches are well priced, plentiful & hit the spot particularly if followed by a fruit crumble. Good to see local Harrogate Daleside beer on offer too 👍

Booked a table for 6 and we were treated like royalty. Drinks and food provided at lightning speed with the sirloin Sunday roast the best we’ve had in a long time and the fish and chips were sublime. The service was superb and would recommend this if you’re visiting

Our party of 5 was extremely pleased with lunch at The Malt Shovel in Brearton. The food, including starters and mains for everyone, was excellent, all perfectly made up and delicious. Accompanied by proper local ales and a few glasses of good wine. The service from the staff was very pleasant, congenial, and professional, just the way a country pub should be. We were greeted by a warming wood fire and the occasional whiff of wood smoke, perfect for an Autumn day. And, all of the dishes were very reasonably priced. It was an absolutely superb afternoon, and we are all very happy to recommend The Malt Shovel to our friends and colleagues. Thank you folks for doing it so well!

Called in for lunch with my friend and 3 dogs. We received a warm welcome and were found a nice table with space for the dogs. The pub is lovely, with a roaring fire. The food was exceptional and service top class. Prices are extremely reasonable. I'll go back here as the other customers we spoke to confirmed

My colleague and I use the Malt Shovel for our work catch ups as it's smack in the middle of where we both live! We have been here a couple of times now and every time the staff have been attentive, friendly and soon accommodating. The added bonus is that the food is delicious! Never had a bad meal here and the Pork Belly is to die for. I imagine it's a great place to meet with friends and family or a quiet meal for two. Highly recommended.

A great place for Sunday lunch! The food was excellent, the service outstanding and it's a proper, traditional Yorkshire country pub. Can't beat it!

Whilst staying in the area for a few days last week we came here for an evening meal. It is a lovely little village pub with a nice atmosphere. It is a little small but is sympathetically decorated and the welcome from the landlady was warm and welcoming. The food was gorgeous and the choice was amazing. The chef should be congratulated. We had mozzarella stuffed chicken and liver and onions, which you don’t see on the menu very often. Both meals were fantastic with a nice selection of vegetables. We had a Lemon Posset to follow as we could only manage 1 between us. Definitely worth a visit when in the area, especially for the personal touch. Thank you. After receiving communication from the owner we now realise there are 2 more rooms at the Malt Shovel which we didn’t see. This certainly would make the pub a lot more roomy and I’m sure it will still be as warm and welcoming.

Delicious good pub food. Steak and ale pie had beautiful crisp light pastry. chips were hand cut, chunky and light. Desserts amazing, home made. Great service with helpful suggestions, and changes were no problem. Highly recommend.

Food was well presented but the cajun chicken was over spiced and salty and the risotto very bland. Service was excellent.

I have eaten several times at the Malt Shovel over the last few years and have always enjoyed the experience. The food is very tasty and good value for money plus the staff are excellent. They serve you with a smile and even sing sometimes! (The singing might be because it’s Christmas!) We booked a family meal for a 89th birthday celebration in October and we weren't disappointed. A warm welcome with attentive friendly staff who looked after our every need.The meal was very well presented and beautifully cooked. The wine was the correct temperature, a choice of good beers and the price reflected the quality of the food and service.It was so good we have booked a 90th birthday party!The chef came to see us and we planned the buffet with his suggestions. I recommend a visit but book ahead!

We arrived early for our 6pm booking and received a warm welcome, unfortunately it soon became apparent that I had booked a different Malt Shovel (one 2 1/2 hours drive away) entirely my mistake. Despite being fully booked the wonderful team moved things around and found us a table, considering there was 5 of us celebrating my husbands birthday, this was no mean feat! The staff were amazing and even put birthday balloons by our table, brought out a brownie with a candle at the end and sang happy birthday. The food and service was the best we have received since moving to Yorkshire 18 months ago and we can’t wait to come back! All 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed every course!! From a clearly very unorganised wife, thank you so much for being as brilliant as you were; you made sure our evening was a success and really went above and beyond to do so!

Always a pleasure to visit The Malt Shovel, such consistency with everything.Not a big menu which we believe is a good thing and it certainly is here. The food they serve is first class, tasty and importantly always served piping hot.Staff are just lovely, engaging and friendly.Never disappointed when we visit here.

What a fabulous friendly restaurant the food is 5 star the service is brilliant and the staff definitely go the extra mile. Nothing is too much trouble. For my husbands 60th we had a table of eleven all served at the same time perfect food and as well as birthday balloons they even topped his pudding with candles and sang him happy birthday. Embarrassed husband!! Great night

Really enjoyable meal in a lovely place. The setting of the restaurant is lovely too nestled in a nice little village. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive and the food was great, though my husband thought his belly pork was a touch too salty but that’s down to taste - my opinion was that it was fine and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would definitely visit again. Thank you to all the staff.

Thanks to trip advisor we discovered the Malt Shovel. On a short break we were looking for a location for our evening meal. The Malt Shovel excelled. Food, drinks, service, ambiance, everything top notch.

We went here for my husband’s birthday. It was just brilliant. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was fantastic. They were so lovely to my husband - balloons and sticky toffee pudding with candle completely unexpected. Highly recommend. We will be back!

Found this little gem from recommendations on Tripadvisor, so glad I did!Booked this little pub for my 16yr anniversary meal with the better half.We arrived and found the pub to be located in a beautiful quaint village.Our welcome was warm and friendly and as we were just a group of 2, we were amusingly seated in the 'naughty corner', a small cosy corner next to the log burner.The menu, although small had enough for everybody's taste and the smaller choice ensured for high quality, well produced and cooked food.My wife chose white bait starter and Cajun fish main, both reported to have been beautiful and the white bait bought back happy memories of her childhood.I chose brie starter and good old steak and ale pie, again both cooked to perfection and full of taste.The venue and staff were very warm and welcoming and we were sad to drag ourselves away.Many thanks for a lovely meal.

What a find...! What a place...! What a chef...!We booked ahead for a birthday meal at this country pub and it far exceeded our expectations. We were greeted by Monika and her sister-in-law, who couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. Smiles in abundance.Although the restaurant was already quite full, we were seated quickly. Large well-lit table with single rose and candle, understated and elegant (important for us oldies to read menus and to see what we are eating...!)Wendy ordered from the menu and I (pescatarian) was offered several tempting fish and veggie alternatives not listed. I would prefer to see Veggie options listed on the rather meat-centric menu, so one doesn't have to ask. I was offered a hake dish (my fave) so was very happy.Our starters arrived quickly - Crispy King Prawns and Deep-Fried Brie and were enormous and utterly delicious. Mains - Belly-Pork and Hake - same story, piping hot and beautifully presented. We were full to bursting and so declined the lovely choice of home made desserts.What a great chef...!!!A gratis birthday celebration Choc-Brownie with Ice-Cream and candle nevertheless suddenly appeared, to a chorus of Happy Birthday and was much enjoyed.All in all, a wonderful warm eating experience. Having organised my husband's 40th birthday at The Malt Shovel in Brearton with our family, 16 in total, everyone had a wonderful evening thanks to the restaurant's great service, delicious food and beautiful surroundings. From the beginning, the Manager was so helpful and accommodating, even went above and beyond by decorating our table and room in preparation for our arrival. Also, having 2 young children, they offered colouring books with crayons and lollipops which kept them happy! Thank you so very much for your 5* service, delicious food and attention to detail. The evening was perfect Strongly recommend to all that appreciate great food and lovely surroundings, whether they are wanting a small private table or looking to accommodate a large party, due to the traditional building it allows tables to have privacy to enjoy their evening ... we will certainly be back.

Eat at The Malt Shovel with the family today and what a brilliant lunch we had. It was the first time I had tried Crispy Bang Bang Chicken for starter and I wasnt disappointed, so tasty and juicy. My wife had goats cheese and beetroot with salad, Janets son had popcorn shrimps and his wife had deep fried brie, all spot on. For mains we had steak and ale pie, battered place and hunters chicken. All tasty and filling. The deserts were Affogato, cremē brulēe and apple tarta tatin with rum and rasin ice cream. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the lunch, this pub is always a pleasure to visit.

We where staying in knaresborough! And in the spa a gentleman recommended malt shovel! We drove out, and they there booked up but kindly gave us a table! The atmosphere was so cozy! The staff faultless! And the food was cooked to perfection! Thank you! If your in the area it’s 100% worth a visit! I’m very fussy! And il be back!

Fantastic Sunday lunch. All the staff were excellent, great service and really made sure our Toddler was happy and well looked after. The lamb, turkey and pork were all excellent, followed by an amazing sticky toffee pudding. The best,meal of our holiday!

Staying with friends who had booked us in for Sunday Lunch. A real treat was waiting for us with excellent service and one of the best Sunday Lunches I have had. Staff very pleasant and polite and the food was plentiful and exceptional.

Never disappointing at the Malt Shovel. The food and service are consistently superb. I can recommend ‘Crispy King Prawn’ starter and the tender delicious ‘Calves Liver’ main course. Mouth watering!

What a hidden treasure!.We went to the Malt Shovel last night, our first time but our friends had been before for Sunday lunch.The welcome was lovely, the seating was so nice then the food …..AMAZING.Some of the nicest people I have ever been served by, attentive, polite, and very welcoming. Set in a tiny village, this place is well worth an evening out. Super smart gastropub with a fine menu and lovely staff.We opted against eating in the beer garden and sat in the verandah, as the entire place was busy. All food was excellent in taste and flavour. We had soup and fish cakes to start and pasta and chicken for main, with lovely wines.The service on the Saturday night in question was slow. However, the owner/waitress later explained that several bookings had turned up much later than billed, putting immense pressure on the kitchen. The pub is also facing acute staff shortages - as all hospitality is in the UK right now.When the food did arrive it was beautifully plated and flavours were excellent. The owners are from Poland, working like crazy and doing a fine job at modernising a Yorkshire village pub. We wish them all the best and highly recommend a visit.Our only advice to them would be to trim the menu a bit to better manage stock and ordering times. It's unnecessarily large and they should be confident that the brilliance of the food would ensure repeat custom whatever they serve.

Situated about 35 mins from Leeds. Limited parking outside. We were taken here by friends from Leeds, who were regular diners here, who raved about it. They were right. A homely pub atmosphere with very friendly helpful waitresses. The service was a bit slow, but this was a Saturday night with staff shortages, but they coped very well. A vast varied menu was available The food was outstanding, delicious and well presented.... well worth the wait Very good value... 1/2 the price of London. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed with a genuine and warm welcome. The pub is beautiful inside with stone floors and lovely wooden tables. The menu contains a good variety of dishes. It's great, hearty, tasty food. The pricrs are very reasonable too. I thought it was really good value for money. Would thoroughly recommend this pub.

This is a lovely country inn offering excellent food and a good range of drinks. The tables are socially distanced and the service was excellent.We had two of the fantastic steak and ale pies and a very good calves liver. All perfectly cooked and in good portions.The puddings were delicious with the rhubarb crumble well liked but the star was the sticky toffee pudding which was was one of the best I have ever had.Well-kept real ales too !Can't wait to come back !

This is a cosy village pub with an interesting menu. All of the food that we ate was well presented and cooked very well. The service as both friendly and efficient and we were delighted to learn from the very pleasant landlady that they had survived all of the lockdowns but that it had been very tough. We were visiting the area so will sadly not be able to visit more frequently but we wish them lots of success with their pub.

Lovely to return to the comforts of this special place although I've enjoyed the takeaways and dining in the marquee, can't beat being inside this cosy pub with good friends and sampling the quality menu containing classics and new dishes, lovely to see the return of the black pudding scotch egg,my favourite! The venison was excellent quality and masterfully cooked,our next visit already booked

We went to the malt shovel for my mums birthday, having never been before. As soon as we walked through the door the staff (in particular Monica) made us feel so welcome. Must admit yet to try weekday food but sure I won’t be disappointed judging by Sunday lunch. I can comment on lamb and beef .. superb in quality and quantity. Staff are brilliant, attentive and courteous. Fabulous place to eat.

Been to the Malt Shovel many times and I can honestly say I have been delighted with the food and service every time. Booked in for lunch on Friday and yet again the food was outstanding. Mushroom soup was so good, very rich and tasty, my wife had her favourite starter, patē , so smooth and tasty. I had Calves liver on a bed of creamy mash and my wife had steak. Outstanding food and the peppercorn sauce was spot on. Finished off with affogato and sticky toffee pudding which were so good. Well done Malt Shovel you are superb!

I can’t say a bad word about anything. The food was absolutely delicious and service unbelievably good. We had the brie, whitebait, wagyu burger, steak pie and sea bass and couldn’t fault any of it. The steak pie and sea bass with champagne sauce being the best we have tasted anywhere and we eat out a lot. The homemade lemon posset didn’t disappoint. Do not be put of by external first impressions.Thank you Monika, we will be back.

My Sunday Lunch take-away from The Malt Shovel was more than equal to any sit-in pub lunch, both for quality & for quantity, to say nothing of the very reasonable price (£10 per meal.)I cannot praise this experience too highly enough and nobody who has any appreciation of food will find better.This is somewhere that I thoroughly recommend.

Although currently closed as a restaurant & pub, Monika & Marek are open for takeaways.I was so excited to learn that I don't have to make a Sunday roast anymore!Pre-ordered 1x Beef 1x Lamb priced at £10 each.The food was ready on time & the delicious smell of a Malt Shovel Sunday Roast filled the car as we drove home.I open the bag & was delighted to find very generous portions of beef, lamb, green veg & carrots, cauliflower cheese, parsnips, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds & a pot of gravy, still piping hot even after the 25 min drive home.All packed separately (not shoved into 1 tub as experienced previously from another, less professional establishment).Everything was, as always, cooked to perfection. Super soft beef, so tasty, as was the lamb. The parsnips were delicious, everything was perfect.Thank you so much.

We visited the Malt Shovel for the first time between lockdowns whilst N Yorks was in T2. We had a family meal between Xmas & NY as a break from the Turkey!Found it on Tripadvisor - looking for a place away from crowds for obvious reasons, and were delighted with our visit. The staff were attentive and helpful - whilst keeping all the Covid restrictions in place. The food is what makes it - large portions of delicious food. Deviled Kidneys, Steak Pie, Giant Fish and Chips - all really well cooked and served, but not pretentious.We will be back when we are allowed!!

Another brilliant dinner at the Malt Shovel. A last minute visit and we were glad we did.Crispy king prawns starter - delightful!Wagyu burger - delightfulRudgate Battleaxe beer - excellent.Service - excellent It’s a lovely, warm welcoming pub. Staff are brilliant. Definitely one of our favourite places around Harrogate.Recommended!

We arived at 1.45pm for 2.00pm. It was no problem, our table was ready and the place warm and inviting with a log fire. There was safe distancing and we felt really secure.The food was superb, my wife had the Turkey and I had the roast beef cooked to perfection and both were adequate portions. with the canapes and the starters and drinks we just could not manage the deserts so decided to take them home.Nothing was too much trouble and all the people serving us were delightful .We have eaten there many times during the year and have never had a bad meal.Give it a go, I am sure you will be very happy ( Dont forget to leave a table for us)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!Went for a drink, to be told that they had stopped serving at 16:00... it was only 15:20Quite a frequent visitor for something to eat, will not be going back now...I am one for supporting local businesses during the pandemic, but I will not be supporting this one... to turn away customers, lockdown must have been good to you?

In these difficult times it was a pleasure to dine at The Malt Shovel again. We were nicely social distanced and the atmosphere was superb. The quality of the food was excellent and the service top notch. We will return, and soon, subject to Govermanrt guidelines. Well done and thank you Marek and Monica

Second visit in as many weeks and will definitely be back again. Setting, staff and food exceptional. Last week Game pie with stunning gravy this week rib eye steak which was huge and cooked to perfection. Really is a beautiful pub

Firstly, the chips were home made, chunky, piping hot, crispy on the outside fluffy in the middle. The salad was crispy and fresh. The rib eye was perfectly cooked as ordered rested so the meat was tender and buttery. Friendly attentive staff and lastly a lovely pint of theakatones. Will be back.
