We have just returned from a two night stay at The George Country Inn, the rooms are lovely decorated ,cosy and well equipped. As a family we booked all three rooms, the breakfast was excellent with a great choice. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was top quality and good sized portions . I would definitely recommend this hotel. The staff are so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us.

It pains me to report that the current management have run this pub into the ground. No food is served, even thought their online profile would suggest otherwise. No effort is made with regards to being part of a close community. It is clear the management focus their efforts on the (other pub) “the black a moor” and have no business sense when it comes to the George at Wath. A pub is the heart of a small village, although we have tried to support this business, this appears to have gone unnoticed and unappreciated. Therefore I cannot recommend this pub and no longer will I support it.

Visited The George for some food last week on a Thursday evening. The food was really good, home made and freshly cooked. Three out of the four of us braved the sharing platter, usually a sharing platter is adequate for one, it consisted of fish goujons, black pudding fritters and camembert Cheese...they were amazing and only £12 each although here comes the warning...they need to be shared!! The drinks were great too, good selection of Gins with Fevertree tonics, Cruzcampo lager or Amstel and two or three beers. It is a family run business which creates a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit and deserves top marks.

Stayed here for 2 nights, and on first evening we chose to eat in the restaurant. The restaurant was quiet in the early evening, closing at 7pm on a Sunday. However there were another couple and a group of five also dining. The food was ok but swimming in gravy. We both ordered a roast dinner, chicken and a beef. Desserts were nicely presented and enjoyable. However, this was all spoiled because it was a cold day, end of October, and there was no heating on in the restaurant.

Stayed for one night and booked last minute. Pub is in a small pretty village close to Ripon. Room was very comfortable and big enough for a short stay with en suite bathroom. Room was a little warm but it was a hot day but fan provided kept us cool. Pub was quiet but it was a Sunday night and a big party on in the village. Pub was lovely with a good selection of beers and gins. Josh the chef and Jean were really friendly. We ate in and the food was excellent. The guy who commented on portions must have a very healthy appetite. We had the Sunday lunch which at 7.95 was great value considering the quality. The other meals that were coming out also looked really good!Breakfast was also excellent the best Full English I've had for a while. Overall very impressed and great value. Would definitely return

Don't go on an empty stomach! Considerable substance is missing from these meals. Riding on a Masterchef contestant reputation does not mean you can feed the hungry traveller on minute portions.

There was a choice of three meats on the roast lunch (or you could have some of each), lovely roast potatoes and a choice of vegs. too. The food was beautifully presented, hot, and tasted very nice indeed. All in all the restaurant itself was attractive and the staff very welcoming. Having been a supporter of local businesses and more particular pubs. I eas most encouraged when moving into Wath to find a potentially good local. On bringing the family for a couple of early evening drinks and maybe some food. I wad struck by how nicely presented the pub was, the early evening atmosphere was pretty good and staff most attentive. But why do "country" type pubs believe that it is fair game to charge 50p a pint more than the average Ripon prices. And £5.75 a glass of rose plus 40p for a splash of fizzy carbonated water is utterly scandelous. Why do pubs in village's think locals are fair game? Locals are and can be the heart beat of a village pub. Instead of my partner and myself visiting maybe 4 times a week, I will use this establishment sparingly. I wish these young people all the best in their endeavours'.

We popped in as a last minute reservation on a Saturday night. I had the hazelnut and mushroom open lasagne, with a herb and flowers side salad followed by ginger cake and rhubarb and my other half, the sausages, bubble and squeak and onions, followed by the coffee pannacotta. All the food was delicious - the flower and herb side salad was quite unexpected, and truly delicious.I am really surprised this place was not busier on a Saturday night. The service was excellent.I would have preferred to sit in the smaller dining room, and my only (small) criticisms (being very picky!), were that the dining room we were in was a bit too light and bright, to be cosy, the covers on some of the chairs needed mending and that bar area needs some baffling as it sounds very echoey - only mentioned to be helpful! And to improve on what is an excellent place, with some great cookery.

We had been out & about & were hungry so popped in here as we had eaten here before & enjoyed it. Didn't know it had been recently taken over. The young chap who served us was very pleasant & confident & the lady owner very pleasant. The food, though tasty was cold, the presentation was okay but a bit colourless, no green veg, all white & orange, never had a Sunday lunch without a green veg to brighten up the plate so it looked a bit strange. Shame because it was tasty, but maybe a bit more veg & no potato other than a couple of roasts so were still a little hungry!

Hugely disappointed to arrive for lunch on Friday at 1.45pm only to be turned away by the chef. The website advertises that lunch is served 12-2.30 but when we arrived we were told that all that they were only prepared to offer sandwiches. Not what we'd had in mind when we were planning a nice lunch out.Really disappointed given the menu looked interesting and the reviews are otherwise good. I doubt we'll hurry back given the frustration of having gone out of our way to try it out. It'd be more helpful if they stated on their website that they're not open for lunch or that pre-bookings are required...

We booked an over night stay and evening meal and breakfast for our sons pass out parade. Before our journey to the George, I rang to find out the postcode. I was met with a very rude (yet well spoken) man who told me i wasn't booked in there at all and he knew that because they only take bookings for 6 or more. Whilst trying to explain to him that we were in fact booked, he interrupted me saying, and i quote, "be quiet madam and let me speak." Really rude! This issue was sorted and he in found our booking. No apology. When we arrived, we were greeted by the manager who was so lovely. He was extremely helpful and even offered to take my husband and I in to Harrogate. The bus stop is literally across the road and was only around £6pp return so we did that. In the evening we were joined by family members who were also staying over. We had a beautiful carvery which catered for everyone. The chef and waitresses were so polite and friendly that we forgot about how the day began. Afterwards, we had drinks in the bar and played some pool in the games area until late. The rooms were very cosy and well decorated. Our only issue with the room was the shower that did nothing more than a trickle. We were told that breakfast was between 7:30 and 10am which would have been perfect as we had to leave by 9am for the parade and a full english is what we needed before the long day ahead. Unfortunately, when we went down for breakfast at 8am, the place was dark with no staff anywhere. After packing our things up, we tried again at 8:40am and this time the dining hall was open but we were told we couldn't have the cooked breakfast as it wouldn't be ready in time. Not exactly what you want to hear so we left with tea and toast. All in all, The George is lovely and i would recommend it to friends.

Went here for an evening meal on a Friday night (2 couples). Meal was ok, nothing really to complain about but I have had better. Didn't realise that Friday night is Bingo Night and it created a strange atmosphere when we were out to have a nice meal and chat with friends and there were bingo numbers being called in the background. It was very busy, mainly with locals I think, who were perhaps just having a drink and playing bingo rather than eating. Pub itself is very nice inside and the staff were pleasant. We eat out regularly - a couple of times a month - and have tried many local pubs/restaurants. Sadly I have to say that this wasn't one of my favourites and there are others I would choose before going back. We needed a meal after an event and at lunchtime we tried to book our supper at the George but there was no reply and no answerphone. The website stated last orders for food were at 9pm. We arrived at 8.45 only to be told with a smug smile that we were too late - so by that time it was also too late to get in elsewhere. If you say you are open until nine, be open until nine. It's a basic rule of hospitality.

The cooking was superb and the rooms beautifully furnished and decorated. However service was a little slow . There is a good atmosphere here and for a special occasion it would be a good choice.

I wanted to pass on my thanks for a fantastic Sunday lunch yesterday. We hadn't booked and you were able to fit a table of four in at 15 minutes notice. The starters were all excellent and the roast beef was delicious. Thanks to Mandy for the extra helpings of beef and roast potatoes, we were all too stuffed for desert!I've eaten at the George a number of times and the food has always been excellent and the Sunday lunch was no exception and excellent value for money for our two courses.

Very comfortable and spacious room, and extremely friendly staff. At £99 for the Dinner B&B deal, we thought the dinner choices might be limited and possibly lowish quality. How wrong we were, as we enjoyed a 3-course meal of top restaurant standard food.We were happy to pay £10 extra to be able to take the dog who was welcome in the bar but not the restaurant (fair enough and works well).Overall, we can highly recommend The George.

I am so glad a local recommended this place to me. What an unexpected gem in a place as tiny and pretty as one would expect in the dales. I will come again when I am in the area.

The scallop starter was delicious but there was hardly any of it. I have never been served as few as two scallops as a starter, four is surely the absolute minimum?Service was excellent and ambience inside the restaurant very good, but I noticed that the outdoor seating needed attention with some battered looking tables and chairs. Some of the food was shall we say rather strangely presented - a beef sandwich on a wooden platter with roast potatoes in a little dinky steel colander, accompanied by a jug of gravy. The only way to tuck in was to impale each piece of potato on a fork and dunk it in the gravy, rather strange. and the steel colander was guaranteed to cool off the potatoes quite quickly. I also heard someone else complaining about a tepid rather tough Yorkshire pudding.Returning to the miniscule scallop starter, it was served on a large white dish, which amplified the effect. As they say, you never get a second chance to make a first impression!

We took our daughter and her boyfriend for a treat but we were bitterly disappointed. The starters were ok but things went down hill with the mains. The descriptions on the menu implied there would be veg with the meal and the waitress confirmed this when we checked with her. However, my husbands steak and ale pie came on its own with a small ring of mash cementing to the plate. No veg and the pie crust was so over done it was inedible. I ordered the lamb and for £17.95 I got about four mouthfuls of lamb, less than one new potato, two bits of carrot and some spinach wilted to silage consistency. The pigeon was raw underneath (no veg either) and the promised salad with scampi consisted of a couple of rocket leaves! Our complaints were met with indifference and their only appeasement was one small bowl of veg between four of us.

After trawling the internet for a belated Valentines night away, my husband came across The George at Wath just outside of Ripon. We decided to book the dinner bed and breakfast package which I honestly think is excellent value for a Saturday night!Check in was at 12pm (how cool - its normally 3pm everywhere else!) which meant we could get there early and take advantage of the phenomenal tapas lunch menu alongside a sublime glass of red! The staff are extremely friendly (in particular Amanda from the front of house) and the food is absolutely to die for!The evening meal was absolutely incredible in both taste and presentation and I think the chef deserves a major award! Should you want to see droolworthy pictures of some of the food, please click the link below to my George at Wath blogpost:http://www.keepingupwiththecustards.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/custard-places-george-at-wath.htmlAll in all, this place is fab, the bar area is relaxed and friendly, the restaurant is lovely and cozy, the food is AMAZING, the rooms are spotless and decorated beautifully and the staff are polite and friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend The George to anyone!

We had dinner in the restaurant which was clean, fresh and beautiful. We were made to feel welcome and at ease straight away by the lovely, smiley staff. We had 3 courses all of which were absolutely delicious and fabulously presented! Well done chef! The service was very professional, we were left alone enough to enjoy the meal but equally felt very well looked after. Spacing/timing between courses was perfect and the portions were just enough to make you feel comfortably full. We really couldnt have asked for more and thank all the staff at the George! you are superb!

We were passing one mid-week lunch time and dropped in for a bite to eat not knowing what to expect. They had a lunch club in if 25 people but went out of their way to ensure we were looked after. Service, food and place itself were really good. I'd recommend to anybody.

We visited the George recently. The staff were very welcoming., The pub and restauranrt looked recently refurbished, and were very modern and clean. There was a good choice on the Menu and the food was excellent. both well cooked and well presented. The service was excellent and although the restaurant was quiet there was a nice ambience. This is definately fine dining as opposed to pub grub as the menu was a little on the pricey side, but having said that it was quality food and you did get what you paid for.....Loos were clean!

Went for a meal last Friday night and from start to finish the experience was thoroughly enjoyable. The service was curteous, the surroundings welcoming and the food superb. We were presented with a complimentary amusee bouch prior to being shown to the restaurant, which was delicious and upon being seated we were offered a selection of homemade bread. Our main course was both beautifully presented and perfectly cooked and the dessert was divine. To finish we ordered coffee and it arrived with complimentary homemade chocolate fudge - a lovely touch. I nearly didn't write this review as the restaurant only seats a few diners and as I intend to visit again I want to make sure they have room for us! - however the management and staff deserve the recognition for a job well done - thankyou for a perfect evening

It's had mixed fortunes but now this lovely old village pub is back as hub; check out the wood stove (with cushion for your canine chum) local ales and a good choice of wines by the glass, including a rather good Prosecco. But the food's the reason to flog up the A1; Gavin Swift's food is exceptional - clever without any pretension. And fantastic value for money.
