Found this wonderful pub via Brit Stop. Had a wonderful 3 course meal. Staff very friendly and professional, food order arrived quickly.

Had a lovely steak, perfectly cooked. Very good portion size. I would just like to suggest that cut down on the portion of chips, far too many and it’s such a waste. Happy customer.

We went here for a treat lunch and it did not disappoint. The steak and ale pie was the best I have ever had, and it is my go to meal when out, so I have had a fair few. The roast dinner looked immense and had plenty of meat. The room was cosy, and the staff were really great, friendly and helpful. There was a great range of drinks, plus 0% ones for drivers. I haven't been here for around 20 years since I moved away, but I will definitely be back. Amazing place.

Really liked this village pub. No food just a beer, excellent.

Well kept cask ales and really generous food portions. The mixed grill could feed a family for several days. Unlike almost every other pub, the steak pies actually have a very decent amount of steak, rather than the usual solitary piece, floating in a sea of insipid gravy. Go hungry and order an XL Uber to get you home.

Went for a Birthday meal recently, staff were very friendly and the food was great. Would highly recommend.

Fab service, delicious food and very, very reasonably priced. The steak, scampi and burgers were incredible. Felt very welcome and despite being a big party, the service was fast and efficient, host was great! Thank you :)

I booked a table for 3 people as it was a friend birthday. Arrived only to be told ihadnt booked a table I was not happy felt stupid infront of my friend. Won't reconend it to anyone.

Immediately welcomed , drinks and menu provided. All had differing meals which were excellently prepared and piping hot. Marvellous!

Village pub with large car park. Popular stop-off for walking groups at lunch times. Good choice of food & always a roast on offer.

Had a table booked for 12.15 for Sunday lunch with friends today. As usual food was lovely. We were shown the desert menu (eventually) but then nobody came to take our orders despite us asking 3 times!!!! We waited until 1.45 and young lady came to our table and told us to move as they wanted it!!!!!!!!!!! We paid our bill and left with no dessert. Malt Shovel Bubbenhall you can do better, a lot better. Your customer care/ service was terrible today. It was your loss as we would have ordered 4 puds and more drinks but because nobody cared enough you lost business but then you needed us to go. We’re not slow eaters, we were sat for an hour and then sat waiting for your staff to do their job!!

Go to this pub on a weekly basis. Have eaten various menu options and meal is always delicious. Reasonably priced. Staff exceptionally friendly and helpful.

Traditional country pub serving excellent food.

Great pub with standard pub food and some real ales. They graciously allowed us to stay overnight in the carpark in our campervan which was a bonus! We both had the steak and ale pie which was exceptional - massive helpings! Starters and desserts were also good. We liked the fact that there was no piped music or tv sports going on - just people talking. There was also a fun quiz to do whilst waiting for your meal with the answers provided when you've finished so you can check them off. Well used by locals with friendly staff.

Sunday lunch was great value for money and really tasty. All of the staff were very friendly and polite.

Excellent ,from walking in the door to ordering and the food itself. All absolutely perfect. We had a couple of pies. A mixed grill and other bits. Everything was above expectations. The owner is very helpful and a real friendly guy as well as all of the staff. I will definitely recommend and will be returning. P.S. the onion rings are a must 👌🏻👌🏻

Lively locals pub with lots of people eating: always a good sign. We had a couple of specials. Surf and turf: the steak was nicely cooked Venison and red wine pie: very tasty piece of a large "tray baked" pie with a top and a bottom Both were served with chips and peas, but there are various options if you want a change Good food

Absolutely brilliant, the food is out of this world I had lasagna with curly fries love the lasagna home made, my husband had malt chicken with chips, my brother in law had home made steak pie with mash veg and gravy, my sister in law’s vegetarian she had 3 egg omelette was huge. The bar manager is very friendly make you feel very welcome and the rest of the staff were all brilliant too

We have been here several times over the last few months and each time the meals are excellent and the portions very large - you never go away hungry! The staff and landlord are very friendly and welcoming and the Landlord is continually going around interacting with the customers - laughing and joking with them whilst at the same time making sure that all is well. I would recommend this pub unreservedly

Amazing! Everything was cooked so nicely! The chips are extraordinary and we had a cake for my cousins birthday! Recommend to everybody out there to come to the malt shovel. 5 stars!

Britstop..... Lovely pub with good friendly staff/ landlord very welcoming as we was in a motorhome stayed overnight ..didn't serve food Sunday night but would return hopefully on a night they do as all locals recommend it .but had a few pints and a good banter with the locals thanks for z good night

We stayed overnight in the car park in our motorhome. A really welcoming proper pub, with good beer and hearty portions of very reasonably priced home cooked food. We were made very welcome by friendly staff and locals and will definitely be back. Kid and dog friendly (dogs in bar area only).

This is a great pub in the lovely village of Bubbenhall. Very convenient to stop off for refreshments, and it is handy if you have been for a walk at Ryton Pools or Brandon Marsh. Food is well prepared and presented. It is reasonably priced too. Staff are thoughtfull, jolly and accomodating. Real ales are on the pumps, including Green King's Abbot Ale, scrumptious. Really, The Malt Shovel is worth a visit. It's a good idea to phone and book up if you intend to have a meal.This pub is popular. Another good thing, there's no loud bumping music to interfere with your conversation. Go on, give it a try. 😃

Love this place, nothing pretentious, but what they do, they do really well. Always a good meal here, big portions for hearty appetites and greedy guts like me :-), My steak pie must have had a pound of steak in it. There is usually a nice selection of specials in addition to the main menu. My husband likes the beer here too. They serve (local brewery Church End one of his favourites) Fallen Angel and he says it's as good a pint as you would get if you visited the Church End brewery. Couldn't get a table in the lounge this time, so we sat in the bar and got chatting to the friendly locals. Cannot fault the staff here they are ALL so welcoming and hospitable, just like pubs used to be and should be.

Excellent staff, very friendly and helpful. One of the ladies even brought a bowl of water for my pooch. Clean throughout, nice beer garden in need of some tender loving care. Nice plum tree by our bench, nice touch for dessert. Would highly recommend.

Even after turning up late the bar/kitchen provided me with a superb selection of Tapas on one of their specials nights.. Highly recommend, good food, good beer and great hosts … As always I will return AAA+++

Went as a party of 19 I hadn't pre ordered they kindly got my food out with tge rest of the meals moussaka was a bit weird never had 1 with no aubergine b4 hence 4*for the food

Regular booking for a party of 12+. The service is exceptional as is the choice of lunch options and the price.

This was an excellent venue. We were made to feel welcome, despite there only being 10 minutes left for food service. Our meal was with us within 20 minutes, and was both generous portions and good quality food. We especially liked the fun quiz, available to do whilst waiting, leading to discussion and competition!

This pub obviously gets very busy at lunch time so it is a good idea to book in advance. There is a sizeable car park. Unfortunately they did not have the home made steak pie I wanted but the lasagna was tasty

This pub is part of the BritStop group, and what a great pub it is. MH parking is in the left hand corner which is nice and quiet. Plenty of room for my 8mtr van. The staff are lovely and friendly, so are the locals that gather in the bar. They make me feel very welcome. I had an evening meal of ribeye steak which was cooked perfectly and all piping hot. 10 oz stake at a very good price. They have a good selection of kask ales too. I enjoyed my one night stay so much I went back for a second night. The next time I come this way I will use this pub again.

Another cracking meal in a pub full of atmosphere and characters. The staff were first class. As for the Steak and Ale pie 🥧 I think I had half a cow in mine, absolutely stunning.

A comfortable traditional village pub offering a warm welcome. Excellent food at very reasonable price. All normal favourites together with a specials board. A good selection of reasonably priced beers and wines. Dogs welcome in the bar.

Ended up here after the pub in another village had closed their kitchen and I’m so happy that it did so we discovered this hidden gem. The food was absolutely amazing. The most delicious home made food I’ve tasted in a while. The portions were huge and the price was super reasonable. The atmosphere was also great with a lovely country vibe and the staff were attentive and helpful. If you go here for dinner, make sure you don’t have lunch!! The steak and ale pie was absolutely delicious and the side of onion rings was amazing. My only regret was that I didn’t leave room for dessert!! We will definitely be back.

I was in a group of 17 people for an evening meal at the Malt Shovel today. The food was excellent as was the service from the staff, especially Caitlin who deserves a special mention. Many thanks!

Oldish decor and furniture but clean and comfy, pleasant and efficient service. Typical pub grub, fairly extensive menu, reasonably priced and with smaller versions on a daily special menu at lower price. Food quite enjoyable. Nearly full on a weekday lunchtime, customers all of pensionable age and seemed to be enjoying their meals.

Had a roast pork dinner which was delicious prompt courteous service would recommend it they also do a chicken breast with a creamy mushroom sauce which is also delicious they also do a selection of lovely deserts one of the specials is a clementine pistachio & cranberry sponge which is to die for .

Open for lunch on Saturday. Excellent service and food and atmosphere. Glad we found this.

Stayed 1 night in car park in campervan, under Britstops scheme and had excellent meal (steak pie + crumble, then a good espresso and Old Pultney malt). Fallen Angel Ale (5%) good too. Very warm friendly service from lively host. Strongly recommended.

Last minute motorhome park up for the night. From the moment I called for availability to park up, the friendly welcome was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. We arrived to our space being saved by a traffic cone, with a beautiful beer garden for our dogs to run free. Booked a meal for a bit of grub for the evening, but then absolutely blown away by the quality of the food, not what we expected at all, for a small village pub! Thank you so much for your hospitality The Malt Shovel. We only wish you were on our doorstep for many more visits ❤️

Had a Sunday roast with my better half, I had full size with 3 meat She had a small roast, we also ordered a side of collie flower cheese and roast potatoes, we needn't have done so, Both were generous in size, good quality, home made fresh ingredients. Would I recommend The Malt Shovel? You bet ya,it's a big yes from me.

Recommended to us by a friend we have now visited quite a few times. The pub has not been 'gentrified' or turned into a 'gastro pub' thank goodness. Makes a nice change to find a proper traditional style English public house. Well cooked, unpretentious meals...

Real ale kept superbly as you'd expect from an award winning pub. Meal portions excellent and in all the years I've supped in the pub I have never seen anyone complain about the quality. When it comes to going the extra mile and little touches mean a lot the photos are a taster of table layout for Father's Day.
