Edited review. New one based on multiple visits because of my handicap and proximity to house. Single, freethinking women are not welcome here. Even if you have a dog. Must come with a man. Then MAYBE you will get a LITTLE respect, though I have seen little proof of that either. Apparently some people don't believe platonic relationships are possible, so men and women alike will hate on you. Note: current management fairly recent, and no food except maybe pasties once a week.

The major has changed considerably with the new ownership. It is a male bastion and i as a woman I would feel very uncomfortable going in alone now, as I didn’t feel at all welcome. Pass it by there are plenty of decent places to drink in town.

One of the best pubs in Ramsbottom. Well worth a visit. Pool table, dart board and juke box, a great traditional pub. Great real ales too.

Tuesday 6th June 2023 This pub I visited the 3 hand pumped ales on offer were well kept but lacked the plink plink yes factor doom bar and Mitchell and Butlers big breweries and this was sad The pub had a great old interiors to it the local following was great as was bar staff tonight easy listening back ground music If beers would have been more interesting 5 stars would have been given DOOM BAR IS FOR DOOM MERCHANTS WHEN DRINKING EXCITING BEERS

We have recently spent alot more time in the major, we are always greeted with a warm welcome. The staff (especially Nat and Sean ) go above and beyond! I can't recommend this public house enough! Best in ramsbottom by a merry mile !

Used to be my local years ago. I am pleased to report it is still a great pub with a friendly atmosphere and with a good choice of beers.

This is by far one of the friendliest, cosiest and most pleasant pubs out there. They have weekly quizes and poker nights. If your new to the area and looking for a nice community pub then I highly enough.

Nice pub, nice beer. Shame that the music is a bit too loud. People go there for a chat and get away from the super high volume in all the Rammy bars.

Oh dear, what happened to the Major? These are difficult times and pubs are struggling but every effort needs to be made to encourage customers in and make sure they return. The Major is failing. We have visited occasionally over many years. I checked to see if the pub was open for food and we made a return visit after several months. Problem 1 - the menu online bears no relationship to what is on offer in the pub. Even the beers are different. Problem 2 - the quality of the food has taken a nose dive. Coleslaw is basically a few bits of shredded cabbage, while the salad is a few leaves, onion and tomatoes with no dressing. The cheese and onion pie filling was strange - pieces of rawish onion with some stringy cheese. Problem 3 - the dessert offering was non-existent. The main menu said to 'ask for the dessert menu'. I asked. The member of staff looked panic struck, rummaged around and said that there isn't one but that another member of staff would know when he came back. The menu was in his head - cheesecake and ice cream only. I asked for the type of cheesecake - salted caramel. The type of ice cream - vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Problem 4 - they don't actually have desserts, even the limited offering stated! After a few minutes another member of staff came to say that they had run out of vanilla ice cream. Moments later we were told that they had run out of cheesecake. We settled up and left. The place was empty (Saturday lunchtime). A few years ago we may not have got a table it used to be that busy. Times change but with service like this there are more enterprising places where folk like us will choose to spend their money. I hope the management can rectify this before another good pub goes down the pan.

Possibly the friendliest pub in Ramsbottom. Great hosts. Lovely food. Everything you could ask for in a local. EDIT; New Landlord, only been in once. Seems to have lost a but if its "zing" but will definitely give it another try, eventually. Another Edit (June 2022): They now have a nice outside bar with plenty of seating. Will be great in the summer. Had live music outside for the Jubilee. Good stuff.

After trying several pubs in Ramsbottom for dinner to no avail we popped into the Major for a drink. The staff were so nice and we ordered food no problem. The steak and kidney pie was fabulous as was the Sunday roast. I think it was the landlady who thanked us as we left she was so nice and I would highly recommend this pub. I used to go in all the time before lockdown but I will deffinately be back . Thanks so much for your hospitality.

Lovely traditional pub in the lovely town of Rammy. Sam & the whole team are so friendly and welcoming and really can't do enough for you, the children and even the dog! There is a great choice of beers & ales, the food is all great quality and fantastic value for money & there is always something happening from football, quiz nights & great live music. We love this place and would highly recommend a visit!

Recently visited The Major with friends and we had a great time. Live music, great atmosphere and we felt very comfortable given the covid restrictions at the moment. The landlady was there ensuring everyone was sticking to the rules. The staff were fab and it made for a great night. Was so good to be back in a pub and I'm glad we chose to go to The Major.

The Major is by far the best public house in the Ramsbottom area. It is a wonderful place to go to for any occasion. You will always get a warm welcome and a friendly face. Highly recommended for great beer,food and entertainment. A superb local for everyone.

Six of us went to the Major on Bank Holiday Monday and received a lovely warm welcome from the landlady Sam, we were in a party mood and asked for some feel good music which was played and added to the great atmosphere of this lovely pub. Service was attentive, quick and friendly. We will be returning to sample the Sunday roast which I hear is fab. Highly recommend this pub in Ramsbottom

I have been to The Major on a few occasions,as a performer and as a customer and I can honestly say it is one of the best pubs around. Brilliant food,amazing atmosphere on a gig night,the locals are all very friendly and most of all the Staff along with Samantha and Christian are very professional,very efficient and very friendly. We can't wait to return in the very near future 😊👍🍺🎶.

Great local pub. The staff and hosts have excellent customer service, couldn't do enough for you. The Sunday dinner is delicious, even my fussy toddler cleared the plate. The live music they have is fantastic. Highly recommend it for night out or lunchtime.

This truly is one of the last traditional pubs in the area that offers a family atmosphere with exceptionally well kept ales and friendly welcoming staff who can’t do enough to make you feel welcome. Food is traditional pub fayre done to a good standard and even the dog was welcome and offered treats. What’s not to like. Well done Sam and the team, pubs could learn a lot from from the Major about how to make a local pub a success.

A great pub in a lovely village. There’s loads going on in Rammy and the Major is one of the more traditional pubs. It’s a good place to make your first stop if you are walking in from the Bury side. Great staff and everything you need in a pub - good beer, food and service. Top notch.

Amazing pub! Sam & Christian (landlady) can’t do enough for you here. They have totally turned the pub around. It’s now always full of life and laughter. We love to pop to the major - a good time guaranteed!!! Dog friendly too!

Even though all the regulations are followed it keeps the feeling of a local friendly relaxing pub. Great food Great hosts and staff!

In short friendly staff nothing to much trouble. Sunday lunch was amazing had both beef and turkey (as I couldn’t decide) lots of fresh veg and great homemade roast potatoes as well as two Yorkshire puddings. All for under a tenner, what’s not to love!

Visited The Major for Sunday lunch. Staff were very friendly. They made us feel very welcome - and also made a real fuss of our two dogs! Sunday lunch was choice of beef or turkey (or both). Hearty portions of good quality food - lots of veg and yorkies. Everything was very COVID friendly - one way system and lots of hand sanitiser. Would highly recommend!!

What a wonderful place this is. The most lovely and attentive staff, as safe as you can get from a covid point of view and really excellent food and drinks. We had heard the good reviews since it has taken over so thought we would give it a try and we were not disappointed. We Loved it. Great ambience, delicious food and superb service. We had the Sunday dinner which was filling and excellent value for money. We have since been back and taken our dog with us. Definitely our new stop off during sunday walks.

Had a lovely family Sunday lunch here recently and we were very happy. The pub has a children’s menu too and the staff can’t do enough to make your visit a great one. Would definitely recommend and we will be returning soon to try out some more of the menu.

From arriving through the door to a warm welcome by the staff on the bar, The Major instantly feels homely and friendly. There’s a great choice of food on the menu, I couldn’t resist having the fish, chips and mushy peas after seeing one arrive on the next table...I wasn’t disappointed it was delicious and this, along with a great choice of cask ales, is why The Major has definitely guaranteed my return! After a good hike on the moors nothing could be better than a visit to the Major - the food this Sunday was excellent (Sunday roast, chicken & Chorizo pie, scampi & vegetarian burger) good choice of beer and wine, everyone was more than happy with their meals - the dogs were also pleased with the free treats.The pub was very busy and Sam has all the Covid actions in place - if you want a traditional pub with good food & nice people give the Major a go you won’t be disappointed We will all be back

Well havent been here for about two years and decided to go for a drink with the dog Eddy. He was on water. Anyhow we were welcomed and only one real ale on , but it was a cracking pint . Got chatting with the locals and had an absolute fabulous night . Barman was very good and joined in the doggie conversation . EDDY who is extremely nervous even took to the doggie bed provided . How good was that! Then to complete the night the new lady manager came to pet Eddy and there was dog treats on the bar. Perfect in every way. So im back to try the food next . Thank you for such a fantastic welcome . Keep it up !

Nice enough Sunday roast but lacked something ... needed a tastier gravy to bring it all together. Staff friendly and prices reasonable. Surroundings in dining area could be lovely with a bit of imagination. E.g., decent bar and lovely fireplace but fire not lit on a cold day and tables were obstructing it. The place could do with a lick of paint and new / renovated seating placed differently. Could be a really cosy area but currently just missing the mark and lacking atmosphere.

Love this pub had a really nice time here

I have eaten here a few times recently and have not been disappointed. The food is pub grub at its best. I had a ‘small ‘ portion of steak pie which was more than adequate and well cooked with proper chunky chips (not frozen). One of my party had the scampi- a generous portion- whilst the third diner had a piri piri chicken baguette. Everyone enjoyed their food and the beer was first class too. The service was quick and the staff were attentive. No complaints and we will be going back soon.
