Booked for Saturday dinner. Got to the restaurant only to find it had been closed for months. They kept sending us reminders about our booking as well. Disgraceful.

I booked, some months previous, a table for 2 for Tuesday 13th September as we had eaten there in previous years and had a lovely meal. However despite having received 2, yes 2 text messages on Monday 12 th September from JR’s confirming the booking with the reference number 10109533 when we turned up at the allotted time on the Tuesday evening found the restaurant was closed. We tried phoning the number on the door but no joy! Very bad customer service !! The manager could have at least phoned or sent a text message advising us. No information regarding reopening date so don’t bother to book this restaurant in the near future or you will be disappointed!!!

Although the booking system allows you to book a table the place is in fact closed down. We were left looking for somewhere else to eat even though we had 2 email confirmations saying are table was in fact booked

1 - Had a family meal booked and they didn’t even have the decency to ring and tell us, we drove and parked up and had to walk up to the door for us to read the sign.

Saturday 4th June... Went to JRs for the umpteenth time, another amazing evening. Food was delicious cant fault the place.... please dont take any notice of the negative posts we have never had a bad meal or time here.... See you soon JRs....

Hopefully we visited on a really bad night for the restaurant. Service was shocking. It took 40 mins in total from the drinks order being taken until all the drinks arrived. Everything we ordered was an ordeal. Gin & tonic, with ice….. My friend eventually received straight gin over a lot of crushed ice. We ordered a Fruits de Mer for 4, 2 fillet steaks and 1 T-bone steak. 3 charred (burnt) steaks arrived. The burnt steaks were practically finished by the time the Fruits de Mer arrived! And this was after the chef nearly dropped 2/3 of the Fruits De Mer on the floor! In addition, my 10 year old son was in the gents and was walked in on by another customer (the gent was very apologetic, but not his fault) as there was no lock on the gents loo!!! The head chef was belligerent from the moment we walked into the restaurant. The man at the bar did his best, but he had no experience and merely “helping out”. I could go on, but I hope to forget the whole thing soon! Thank you to 3 other tables of diners for their camaraderie throughout the evening. Turns out we weren’t dining at Fawlty Towers, nor were we on Candid Camera, but it sure felt like it!!!! Did I mention we were celebrating a 20th wedding anniversary?

Turned up for our table reservation on Friday 3rd June to find a note on the door saying that they were closed due to a burst pipe . Surely one member of staff should have been given the job of ringing / texting customers of the situation. They have the telephone numbers as they keep sending messages reminding you of your reservation.....common courtesy etc.! It was our last night in Brixham and all the other restaurants within walking distance were fully booked.

Hopefully we visited this restaurant on a rare bad evening. The front of house staff didn't have any experience, other than serving drinks so I feel lucky that our order was taken correctly. Anyone taking orders should know the menu they are serving. The food order was mostly ok. Fish stew was good, salt & pepper squid was ok and the veg & potatoes are nice. The scampi and plaice were however a little wet and the medium-rare steak was very well done (charred). Reminded me of my BBQ. Thanks to a bunch of tables around us all having similar experiences the evening was actually quite funny. Meals turning up at different times, attempts to deliver to the wrong table, empty mustard pots and near disasters with a very expensive fruit de mare. The wine was good but the coke was Pepsi Max.

We visited on an evening where a couple of members of staff had not turned up - a common problem in the current climate where there is a huge challenge in getting hospitality staff. The owner was hugely apologetic for a bit of a delay and honestly it was one of the most enjoyable evenings we’ve had this week while on holiday in Brixham. The food was really nice and I would recommend this lovely, family friendly restaurant

Visited on Saturday, during the pirate festival. James and his team were short on staff and we were the last table to be seated, but having been to JRs before we know the food is worth the wait. So much praise for the young lad who was running the front of house, who could not have worked harder to keep everyone happy, though I did feel sorry for you feeling you had to apologise so much; it was one of Brixham's busiest weekends and you were what, 4 staff running the whole restuarant and kitchen? You all did an incredible job and the food was as gorgeous as always. Had a lovely evening, the best of our break (our visit to JRs usually is the highlight) and was lovely to have a chat at the end of the night. If ever you're in the area, check them out. If it is busy, be patient as the food is worth waiting for!

This was our first Time visiting this resturant after being recommended by someone else. The views from the table were great and from the very start the service was amazing! We did have a young lad serve us who I believe would have been new but none the less he did a great job. He had to check a couple of things but he was very polite and perfessional! (We all have to start somewhere) We were told prior the food may take some time to come out as everything is freshly made. We ordered starters and mains and to be honest we didn't mind the wait at all mainly because the starters where beautiful and it gave us time to have a break before eating the mains. We were told we also had the table for the night which made us not feel rushed and compelled to 'eat and leave' Unlike some restuants who over book themselves and rush you out the door! It was great food, great service and a great restaurant, we will be back!

Absolutely outstanding performance all round! Came here as a couple off season and the owner was out front hosting and doing a brilliant job! James was everything you want as a host, knowledgable friendly personable and just an all round lovely person! Cannot recommend this place highly enough! Be sure to book in busier seasons but it I’d well worth it!!!!

Whilst I understand you didn’t have the same experience as the review before. I unfortunate have to eat at 18.00 due to dialysis so my mother booked a table accordingly so as for me to get home in time to do this. The fruit de Mar on a previous time was perfect but this time the fish was watery and clams were among the ice and dumped in the oysters so all in all not a good experience for us. We wouldn’t have written a review if we just turn up and had to wait 2 hours but as we had book 2 weeks earlier, I feel the previous review is justified

We visited the same night as the previous post and we had a totally different experience to the summary provided below (and in fact we did not witness the same version of events!). The waitress (Claire) was super friendly and our drinks order was taken immediately, even when we had waited 15 mins for her to take our food order she gave us a complimentary drink. The starters and the main meal were faultless - in fact the fillet steak burger was the best we have tasted and we asked the chef (James) for the recipe, which he shared willingly and also gave us a spice mix to take home! The atmosphere was relaxed and you are not made to feel rushed like you are in chain restaurants. Food is clearly all homemade from scratch so many would say that makes it worth the wait. As we were the last customer in there at closing we were treated to a further complimentary drink. It was lovely to chat to both James and Claire not only about the business but also the local area. Would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant and supporting local. Sadly we are not from the area but if we were we would be regular visitors. It was lovely to meet you both. We booked two weeks ago as the restaurant needs notice for a fruit de Mar. My son is on dialysis so we’re working round this. We booked for 18.00 but waited until 19.45 for our food to arrive. The fish was very watery and not very tasty. The experience was very very disappointing to say the least. We had our bill reduced by 10% and the bottle of wine taken off the menu but this was not enough to compensate for this disastrous evening. Please be aware of extremely slow service and volatile chef. We will definitely not be going back as there are plenty of lovely restaurants in Brixham.

This place is amazing. It never falters with its standards. We come here every time were down that way.The food is fresh and is always our indulgence. We have been lucky enough to dine all over the world and this is, by some stretch, the worst restaurant we have ever been to. I’m not sure if it was the musty grey carpet, the cheap tables which looked like they belonged in someone’s student accommodation, or the fact when we phoned to book we specifically requested a window table (and were told this was confirmed) but when we arrived we were given a table at the very back of the restaurant. It completely ruined the evening for us. Apologies were given and the waiting staff clearly tried their best to make up for this but it just didn’t make up for the fact that the place was a dive and desperately trying to masquerade as a top tier restaurant. The setting of the restaurant was so bad that we were utterly stunned. The food was ok, it wasn’t terrible. We ate and left fairly promptly. There are plenty of other better places to eat in Brixham where you won’t be left disappointed.

Went there Saturday night 3rd visit to the restaurant always been good but Saturday was so disappointing went with friends saying how good it was 2 of the main dishes on the special menu monkfish scallops and prawns in a sauce 2 piece of each very small portion for 25 pounds per person very very disappointed would struggle to go back after that I live locally not a visitor and enjoy good food and happy to pay when the food is good and proper sized portions

Kind of OK but good be so much better. You know it’s going to be an experience when you sit at your table and your companion says “do you think it used to be a solicitor’s office?” The decor like the service and the food, with a bit of effort and a bit of passion could be so much better. It’s the sort of place you go to and think it’s not bad enough to complain but not good enough to go back. I had scampi that was clearly bought in frozen.. .. it was about as good as you got served in a basket in 1979. It did come with a bowl of peas, carrots and leeks, who serves leeks with fried fish? I didn’t get lemon but when y request was met the slice was so slim it didn’t offer enough juice to add to the scampi. I can’t suggest you don’t go, as it was OK, but if someone gave it a little shake and added some passion it could be 50% better over night

We visited here twice during our stay in Brixham and found it to be a lovely small restaurant serving tasty uncomplicated dishes. I particularly enjoyed mushroom starter, and the ribeye steak main course which was cooked exactly to my liking and with a beautiful Diane sauce. The chips were really good too!The staff were friendly and helpful and the service was good. The desserts were only average but absolutely nothing wrong with them, and nice to be able to have custard with a sponge pudding rather than the posh ice cream you often get offered.In summary, good food, nice service, would recommend and we will return.

We visited JR’s where there management of Covid procedures was spot on with signs saying our table had been sanitised. Very reassuring. I’m a vegetarian and there were a few options for main course ( more than most restaurants ) - but only one starter. I had mushroom , brown rice and hazelnut slice which was delicious ( though I was quite surprised that it had been fried. ) there was a huge serving of potatoes and veg to go with it. So if you are after large portions , this is definitely the place to come. The rest of the family had a selection of seafood which again came in abundance and I’m told was delicious too. Staff are very friendly too.

We had visited here on a previous visit and were debating to visit another place but opted for JRs in the end and we were so glad we did. We had a lovely table by the window. There was a great choice of food with lots of special dishes. We had starters with lovely homemade bread and were well full after the mains! The food was great quality and the service was welcoming and not rushed. It was a great choice of venue for our last night. It’s a hidden restaurant upstairs and could easily get missed. All Covid guidelines were in place and it felt very safe. Very enjoyable evening.

My husband and I went here for his bday meal. He had baby octopus as a starter and they were completely overcooked. He said it was like chewing on elastic band. Then he had lobster for his main and it was overcooked. We told the staff but they basically said they were difficult to cook and not that apologetic. If they are that difficult to cook then don't put them on the menu or hire someone who can cook them. Also, we found a total of 3 hairs on our plates. They appeared to be animal hairs. We told the waiter (I told him 2 because I didn't know of the 3rd at the time) and he asked to see them. I explained that the first was gone (picked off) and the 2nd was still somewhere in my salad I left behind. Very little apology and no money taken off bill. Won't be going back.

I was very impressed by the measures in place for covid security - especially the space between tables. They were clearly taking it very seriously and this was very important to us. The quality of food was excellent - mussels were succulent and the fillet steak was one of the best I have ever had.

The service is really friendly and attentive but the surroundings and furnishings look rather tired and dated. Would have liked to give a rating of “good” as my husband’s fillet steak was very good , whereas my swordfish was only average ( it was really bland and suspect it was from the freezer ). The seafood platter starter was also a little disappointing ( too many deep fried elements that I also suspect came from the freezer )

Lovely restaurant which you immediately feel at home in. Nicely decorated , wonderful staff and very comfy chairs. Indulged in my first ever oyster as they offer the choice of one , very tasty! Also offer the choice of upgrading a starter to a main , a nice touch. Main course of Mussells with homemade bread , to mop up the gorgeous sauce that they come in, for me and they were soo lovely. Hubby had Fishcakes with mozzarella in and we shared some chips. Both main courses cooked to perfection and very tasty. Nice cheesecake finished the meal. Would highly recommend this fab restaurant for its food , ambiance and lovely staff and owners.

We went to this restaurant this evening. You have to book in advance. Its tastefully decorated inside, you do go upstairs. Our food was beautiful! Myself an brother in law had the Trio of Brixham fish, which was beautifully presented an tasted amazing! It was Lemon sole, Dab an John Doby. First time I'd tried these fish and they were so good. My wife and sister inlaw had the steak, which was delicious. Highly recommended restaurant, the staff are so welcoming and friendly. The kitchen door is left open (there is no noise coming from it, extremely professional Chef an kitchen staff) an the smells are amazing. The chef even came out as we'd asked how did the fish John Doby get its name. He was more than happy to come out an tell us. This is a restaurant really not to be missed when in Brixham - so book in advance!

We booked a few days before, we had a lovely window seat. The service was second to none, we had starters of oysters for me and jalapeño bites for my husband, followed by monkfish, prawns and scallops in a brandy sauce with new potatoes and vegetables, my husband had a steak with new potatoes mushrooms and tomatoes. I had a pudding raspberry pavlova followed by coffee. All the food was fantastic, I highly recommend this restaurant will definitely return.

We visited here last night and I was most impressed with front of house from arrival to departure. Everything sanitised tables menus, customers to use hand sanitiser on arrival. Table very well spaced out with excellent socialDistancing. We both had steaks.... rump and fillet and cooked to our required taste with great satisfaction.Will revisit again without hesitation! Who would serve a burnt steak! Asked for it to be cooked medium but came out overcook and burnt. Staff didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with it. Also had monkfish, prawns and scallops in a sauce which was Ok until the bill came and they charged extra for chips and veg, so but the price at around £30, which was very expensive. Based on our poor service we cancelled our other booking

We visited here upon the recommendations from Trip Advisor. I loved every aspect of my meal: oysters to start followed by fresh fish, potatoes and vegetables. My boyfriend had prawn starter for starters, which was lush, however he felt his main platter was a bit too much deep fried rather than showcasing the food like my main. He did like it, but just felt he could have done with some more natural food on his plate.Would we recommend, yes we would. In our opinion my boyfriend just picked the wrong meal for his tastes, but it is good to try new things even if you end up not overly liking.Service was impeccable and the fresh fish were amazing.

This was our second visit to JRs. We went in November for my birthday and loved it so went there yesterday for my wife’s birthday. Covid safe and secure the dining room was well spaced out. The staff are attentive and friendly and very efficient and the food is delicious. This time we went for a seafood platter and the swordfish. If you have a big appetite then the platter is for you but I struggled and left half maybe next time I’ll have the starter version. My wife said the swordfish was excellent. This is fast becoming one our favourite restaurants in Brixham and we have already booked up for our anniversary in August.

I’m surprised that any restaurant can serve soggy frozen veg. With so many of us cooking at home you come to a restaurant for something special. I think we went wrong with not sticking to fish. But If frozen chicken strips , frozen veg and creamy sauce with burnt garlic Is what’s on offer then it shouldn’t be offered. Bitterly disappointed as that’s the taste that was left in our mouths.

We went to JR’s on Saturday 4th July, the first meal out during this pandemic. With initially being a bit apprehensive about even going out for a meal we were made to feel so safe and welcome from the get go. Sanitiser was at the ready as you walked in, tables were at a distance where you felt comfortable and at a safe distance and was just a clean and lovely environment. Now for the food.. it was incredible, the menu was so versatile and was so much to choose from but wasn’t overwhelming at all. I had the Monkfish, scallops and prawn medley and it was one of the tastiest things I’ve ever eating! My other half had the fillet steak along with others who joined us. I obviously had to try some and it just melted in my mouth. Yum!I would highly recommend JR’s and want to say a massive thank you to the lovely staff for being so accommodating and making my birthday weekend very special.

My friend booked this Resturant for a night out there was some negative comments on the website and trip advisor but we chose to ignore them as most seemed fine and we liked the look of the menusOur experience was excellent and we all had good food exactly how we asked for it as described on the menu and with fab serviceTop tip this Resturant is on the top floor and they have one table overlooking the harbour for 4 It’s a smart clean Restuarant and has a cosy homely ambiance and not the corporate canteen style which was a refreshing changeMy wife had a superb whole turbot which just fell off the bone and I had scallops and monkfish in a creamy garlicky sauce which was wonderful and soft and tasting of the sea. Both accompanied by good chips and salads no complaints here! Our friends had steaks both reporting cooked to their request one medium one rateand our other friend enjoyed his meal so five happy customers Oh by the way we both had a sharing fish platter and again these were perfectly acceptable Service was really friendly and we were well looked after with good wine to help us with our meal!!!! Yes it’s a tad more for some bits but in the main it’s good pricing but more importantly good food and service deliveredTop tip again it’s right next to all the bars and the harbour and the excellent Liberties funky cocktail for either pre or after cocktails ( we did both)This is definitely a returner and we had a fabulous night so thank you JR’s

Quite good food here and wide menu choice for a small restaurant, but seemingly priced to fleece home-counties summer visitors - which tactic does not really work for locals visiting in winter! Portions are on the small side for many starter and main course items. Pirate-themed decor is a mixture of gloomy and naff, and the loos are a grim too for a supposed quality restaurant. While the food is actually quite reasonable, I would not go again.

We had a great Valentines dinner, the trio of local fish and mussels were superb. The local beer also went down well!!Only gripe was that the restaurant was only half full but they sat three couples on small tables right next to each other. This was far too close to be comfortable for reasons I won’t go into here. I asked to move to an unoccupied table for four, which was reluctantly granted.It looked like the chef only chatted to the locals after service but I can let that go. Food was great and good value so I would recommend.

Very clean, friendly family run restaurant, Rachel and James made a fuss of my husband putting 60 banners and balloons up around the table and even bought him a card, the food was excellent, we had surf and turf, the rump steak one medium rare and one medium they were both cooked to perfection, the Stilton sauce was yummy and so was the Diane sauce, we had 3 big prawns and 3 lovely scampi in light breadcrumbs, tasty mushrooms and tomato. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely star quality food. Amazing service. Would eat here every day if i could. Amazing location and the staff are so helpful and accomodating. Definitely will be coming back.

Usually for my birthday treat I get taken to Beamers but as they weren’t open we decided to try JRs based on recent reviews. Well we certainly weren’t disappointed. I had the tiger prawns starter and my wife had scallops. For main my wife had the fillet steak which she has confirmed is probably the best she’s eaten in a long time! I had the whole John Dory. It was amazing and not a bone in sight. Along with 5 drinks (wine and beer) the bill was less than £90! Well recommended.

My partner and I decided to try JR's and wasn't disappointed. The server interacted with our two toddlers upon arrival and made us feel very welcome from the start.My partner had soup which wasn't on the menu but we're very happy to accommodate what he wanted, I had the lobster which was on a special and they cooked it to how I wanted with a garlic butter.Great evening

Having come to Brixham for a few days we (wife, 15 yr old son and myself) wanted to try a fish restaurant. After reading the reviews we decided this looked like a good choice with a reasonably priced menu and a varied food choice. The restaurant is quite small but no issues with this as we were seated in a corner by the bar. A bit noisy when they were making drinks and rattling ice cubes around in the bucket next to my head but not really a major issue. I did however notice 2 tables with couples on that were so close they ended up having conversations throughout their meals. Not a problem for us but I did wonder why they had been seated like this when there were several free tables that could have been used to spread everyone out. Just worth considering if you want a nice quiet meal with your partner. The food quality was average overall bearing in mind the price of the meal. The previous night we eat at the Lighthouse which was a much better choice with some lovely food and great wine pairings. The most disappointing things though were the speed of service which was agonisingly slow (over 2 hours for 2 courses with a half empty restaurant) the overall lack of attention from the servers who went through the motions but were certainly not enthusiastic or even knowledgeable about the menu and food choices when asked and the general ‘sloppiness’ of all the staff. Overall it was okay but for the price I would have expected better service and food quality. I’m sure if they put a bit more effort in this good me a good restaurant.

Booked a Meal for my wife's Birthday on 24th September. We preordered the Fruits de Mer. The window table was decorated for the Birthday ! The welcome we received was lovely . Drinks ordered we had a short wait for our dish to arrive, carried in by 2 people! (see photos )We have never seen so many shell fish before !Every thing was fresh and so tasty, never tried Oysters before, it took us about 2 hours to eat. No room for pudding !Our waiter was very attentive and helpful,nothing too much trouble.This is a 1st class restaurant and we will return next year and try the other items on their extensive menu .

Wow I can only give this little restaurant a raving review, this was the second time we have visited Brixham and having learnt that our favourite seafood restaurant closed down we were eager to find one just as good, and we did. Everything was on par!This is out of season so wasn’t expecting to find my favourite seafood but it was right up there in the menu. This a small and very intimate restaurant and automatically makes you feel very secluded and welcome. This family run restaurant couldn’t do enough for you. Allowed me to change chairs when mine was to low. Services was fantastic and fast. We had scallops for starters and they were Devine. Cooked to perfection For our mains we decided to go with steaks and I am probably one of the most fussiest steak lover who only likes it very well done . It wasn’t cooked to my liking but they were very happy to recook it and return with all fresh accompaniment, please let it be know I am the fussiest when it comes to steak. My partner had the fillet steak and was cooked to perfection. If you fancy steak or seafood or both please try this place. It’s fantastic

We didn't book but were welcomed in. The service was good and the staff very attentive but not over attentive. We had a mix of Fish and Meat and both were very good, A tasty rump that cut easily.

Love to eat here every time we are in Devon. Thanks once again for a gorgeous meal, we are never disappointed by the food or service and have booked a table for the next trip.

My son has allergies to nuts and sesame which can be very dangerous. As such it's hard for us to find restaurants where we feel confident and we tend to go to the same places all the time. We gave JR's a try and I was so impressed at how helpful they were. The food was wonderful and we had absolute faith that they knew what they were talking about. The fish is so fresh thanks to being caught locally and you'll struggle to find better in South Devon

We tried this restaurant because we wanted seafood and the other two Brixham restaurants that specialised in seafood were either closed or fully booked, and JR's had good reviews, but we were disappointed - the food wan't bad just wasn't as good as we were expecting. We got off to a good start with the starters - my son enjoyed his starter of Fresh Scallops and my Tiger Prawns in a Chilli and Coriander sauce was fiery, but good. However, it was the mains that let the side down: my son enjoyed his Monkfish, Scallop and Prawn Medley (but found the sauce a bit heavy going), while my Lobster was a bit on the dry side and nothing special, and my wife's Trio of Brixham Fish was insipid and overwhelmed by the Parsley sauce. Based on the reviews, it would seem that ordering the meat is a safer bet.
