Was spending the w/e in Cumwhinton at a dog agility competition and needed to refill on vittles. Saw this fantastic pub from the main road so wandered down. Opens (Sat) at 5pm, check website for other opening times. Great menu and specials board, all reasonably priced. My partner chose the fish pie, with root mash, veg and sml crusty baguette and I plumped for the steak and ale pie. Both were beyond delicious. 2 drinks and 2 mains, £35 Would definitely visit again and would not hesitate in recommending. Has a small car park, and beer garden.

What a beautiful little pub. Warm, welcoming and a perfect representation of a country village pub. Situated in the quaint village of Cumwhinton, the Lowther Arms provides, food, drink and accommodation.. from locally brewed ales to hand selected wines there is no shortage of choice, coupled with the most beautiful home cooked food at exceptional value. The Lowther Arms gets full marks from me. The pub itself showcases beautiful bare sandstone walls, decorated with pictures and ornaments of old, highlighting its history and its place within the village. Dark woods, soft lighting and mellow music sets the atmosphere for a warm and relaxing experience. The staff are polite and very attentive, making sure your needs are catered for. The pub is subtly arranged into two halves; a more romantic side for dining and quiet conversation and a social side that's filled with laughter. A box to tick for any occasion. For me, the Lowther Arms main attraction is its beautiful home cooked food. With a varying specials board, week by week to highlight the chefs passion for cooking and experience in the kitchen. I strayed from the popular Sunday dinner this evening and chose the Tuna steak with mango salsa which was simply Exceptional! The salsa was so perfectly balanced with sweet and sour flavours I could have eaten it on its own and been content. Truly. The Tuna was incredible, so fresh and flavoursome and cooked just to my liking. Flawless. Thank you for the perfect evening and the perfect meal for me and my family. We'll definitely be back for more. Well done!

I was fortunate enough to stay at the his gorgeous pub for 2 nights . The room was amazing, the breakfast was awesome . I had a full English the first morning and the second morning I had toast served with a variety of jams . Cereal with yoghurt and a pot of coffee . I had dinner both nights and couldn't fault the meals . Seafood crumble was soooo good as was the scampi . The garden was so beautiful with all the flowers in bloom . Pots and pots of them . The atmosphere in the pub was sooo English . The pub also caters for travellers in motorhomes . Park for free as long as they buy a meal . Thanks Eric .

Appalling meal served by reluctant, miserable staff. Disappointed as last year we had decent burgers. This year we tried other items from the menu (not the specials). Food appeared at 6.30 (they open at 6) so was obviously microwaved. The chicken was stringy and dry, despite a sauce, so I suspect was a warmed lunch. Time to try somewhere else, I think.

Lovely looking pub inside and out, good selection of draught could be better with some premium brands but pints are good. The issue with this pub is the over priced food for the quality that is served and there is no atmosphere with old music being served (Tom Jones Deliliah etc) and the staff show no interest in you unless you live in the village and have been going there for years. Very unwelcoming. Lovely beer garden and potential to be great if the staff can be friendly and improve the quality of food in offer.

Two of us were starting an ultra-marathon from Carlisle Castle at 07.15 on a Saturday in June. We were late in organising ourselves and accom was tight in the area. We eventually found vacancies at the Lowther Arms, just over 3-miles from our start point. We booked 2 x rooms and travelled up on the Friday. We were slightly on edge due to there being a virtually non-existent /antiquated website and through a couple of brusque 'phone conversations with the landlord. However, as soon as we arrived after travelling all day, the landlord could not have been more helpful. In short, he cooked us a delightful evening meal, even though we had missed their food serving times, and offered to get up and cook us a full English (which was top notch !) at 06.00 the next morning so that we could get away in plenty of time for our race start. As we were not due to make our way back from our finish line at Newcastle until the Monday, he even offered for us to park our car around at his own home for extra safety. Our rooms were exceptionally clean and cozy and the landlord also sorted our taxi for first thing Saturday morning. A true hidden gem of a country inn that I will certainly look out for on any future road trips up North. It was only a shame that we couldn't stay for a couple of pints of decent ale and a craic !

I have been to the lowther arms many times and the food has always been good, a nice cozy little pub with plenty of choice. We were out celebrating my grandmas birthday and my aunty had just been given the all clear from cancer..We opened the door and instead of being greeted with a friendly hello, the woman snapped have you got your masks!! We didn't have masks as we were under the impression you didnt need them when dining out ..? This has maybe changed she then proceeded to give us some blue toilet roll if we needed to walk about the pub! We asked about the specials and again she snapped there round that corner! We asked if we could sit round by the fire as my grandma was cold and we were told no its just a light on the fire its nicer round here (opposite the toilets) her attitude was that she did NOT want to be working!! I wanted to leave and go somewhere else I was so annoyed with her but we didnt want to cause a scene as we were out to celebrate. At this point I'd had enough of being spoken to like kids and decided we were going to move tables and sit were we wanted to sit. We were handed a pen and asked to complete our details name phone number etc.. my partner tried to make a joke with her about the pen being sterile as she had made such a scene the whole night, this didnt go down well. Safe to say the night was awful, no atmosphere, no music. Felt like 5 naughty children being told off constantly... and the food was totally average. There was a puddle of water on our plates off the cabbage and carrots. The staff in the lowther arms were always helpful and warm this unfortunately wasnt the case last night. I understand these are worrying times for everyone and businesses are struggling but we are all in the same boat. It's safe to say I wont be back Joe would I recommend this once lovley little pub to anyone else.

We always visit when in Carlisle for the weekend, the chef’s specials board always has an array of great home cooked dishes. The staff are very pleasant (this does NOT include the miserable, obnoxious manager). On this visit the food was delicious again but the COVID precautions were NON EXISTENT. Manager seating people too close together. No hand sanitizer in the lavatories only at the entrance to the pub. We’ll definitely be back but not until it’s safe to do so.

This was an overnight stop on our way to Scotland and we felt that it had been a good choice. The rooms were tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and well appointed. .We ate in the busy bar and chose one of the daily specials which was delicious. A mix of salmon, prawns and trout in a light source with a crunchy topping, served with crisp, light chips and fresh vegetables. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and with a reasonable choice.I would recommend this country pub.

I visited here with my mum and her husband for lunch on a Sunday. I've never been before. My mum told me how popular this place was so I was looking forward to trying it. There is dedicated parking. It's not a massive car park but a decent size and the village isn't permit parking so I'm sure you could easily find somewhere else to park if necessary. There is a cute little beer garden with picnic tables out the front. Inside, the pub is a typical country pub. We had reserved a table but if we hadn't, I don't think we'd have gotten a table as it was full for most of the time we were in there. The young girl behind the bar was very friendly when we got our drinks.I ordered a prawn salad. My family ordered roasts. My prawn salad was a good size. The salad itself wasn't anything special (lots of lettuce with a few other bits) but there was a decent amount of prawns. I am SO glad I didn't get a roast. Aside from the meat, you got vegetables, mash and new potatoes that were scrubbed completely clean. Honestly, the plate looked like a Wiltshire Foods meal (old people's meals on wheels service). Now, the entire pub's diners were all pensioner age so maybe that's why it's so popular. But for anyone who enjoys eating out regularly and likes food with flavour, this isn't the place to go. As well as catering for pensioners, the whole experience felt like a day trip to a care home. Elderly people were coming in and loudly complaining that 'non-locals' were sat on 'their' tables. People bringing in their own glasses to use. People huffing they weren't sat next to their usual friends. All very odd. It was a warm day when we visited. Disappointingly, a group of male youths came in without tops on and weren't told to get dressed. When we left, they were also sat on the picnic tables with their feet on the benches, smoking and being very loud. Still topless. If the food was priced to reflect the flavourless, pensioners favourite type food, I'd have given it an extra star. But it was priced like a gastro pub without the taste nor presentation. I really don't know why this place is so popular.

Lovely looking pub and very well kept, great beer garden and a decent pint. Food is decent but not great. There's enough selection for if you visit little but not often although there is a good specials board which changes daily. The real issue here is the staff as they are very unfriendly unless you live local which is a massive shame as the atmosphere is massively impacted. If they showed an interest in all customers this would make a massive impact as the service although not rude is certainly not friendly and definitely unwelcoming. Also, the same music here is also always on so it's easy to get sick of the same Tom Jones song on okay everytime we visit. The only reason we do visit is because it's our local and convenient. Massive shame as if the staff were friendly and the pub had a bit of atmosphere it would be one of the best around.

Lovely pub, lovely food, drink selection average for example you couldn't get a pint of Guinness, John Smiths or a premium lager (they serve Fosters). The drinks you can get past, the food is consistently tasty, the downside is the staff are consistently unfriendly as in they never great you (it's very robotic) and certainly don't show an interest in you. As a previous review says a smile goes a long way and whilst the food is good, surroundings good (bar the same music on everytime which could change for better) the place has so much potential but the unfriendly service unfortunately let's it down as the staff aren't welcoming.

We visited the lowther arms with a group of friends and our children, and the service of the staff was terrible we were looked down on by each member of staff, we ordered our food and they brought the wrong order and this wasnt corrected when we informed them, the kids spilt a drink and we wer given a cloth to clean it up ourselves,we wer never asked once during our meal if everything was ok,this is just a bog standered pub which thinks its better than everywere else and infact its more of a backstreet pub...they look down in people just because everyone doesnt dress in a suit on a hot summers day doesnt mean they are not nice humans we are all human at the end of the day u dont judge a book by its cover...there was no kids facilities and no drinks for kids such as fruit shoot, capri sun etc only cordial and water which when your buyin for children aged 2-5 and you expect to at least have a straw and they couldnt even provide us with this....we eat out at alot of places and we have never once been treated in this manner...we have all good manners as this is the way we were brought up giv respect get respect but in this case they were all for themselves!!!!

Went for Sunday lunch and was so good had to go back for a dinner later in our week's holiday. The Sunday roast beef was great and the pork my wife had was perfect. Our dinner surpassed Sunday and is probably the best steak I've ever had.

This is our local, although we travel a lot and dont dine here very often. The menu is amazing; a very wide range including beef medallions, fillet steak, etc... all at affordable prices. Service excellent.Minor improvements could be: 'large' wine was served in medium glass (although correct volume); much nicer to use large glass half-filled to 250ml. The 'sherry trifle' didnt taste of any sherry, and I couldnt see any sponge either! The dessert spoon provided didnt reach anywhere near the bottom of the narrow 'cocktail-type' glass, and the volume was quite relatively small. Otherwise excellent!

This was a "needs must" visit - we needed to be fed and The Lowther did it. They did it rather well as it happens. We chose from the specials board. The food was tasty and well presented and there was enough of it. It was very reasonably priced and enhanced by the old world charm of the pub. So if you are in the area (and particularly if you are staying in the very good B&B nearby), it would make sense to give it a try, especially as the two efficient young women who served us did a brilliant job of making us welcome. Thanks to all.

Went here after being recommended it by another local pub who were fully booked! Was very hungry after having driven 6 hours from Scotland on the way home to Yorkshire! The food came out too quickly to start with . I ordered chicken supreme with veg potatoes and peppercorn sauce! It was clearly all pre cooked and just reheated to order! Chicken dry, sauce average, carots overdone and tasteless, potatoes plain and boring and the other vegetable looked like someone had been sick in my plate. I think it was mashed up cauliflower? Why? But what stopped me in my tracks was the piece of wire mixed in with it! My son cut up his sausage which was dried out in the middle and rock hard! Inedible! Sent the food back and the chefs explanation was it was a bit of the wire wool used to clean the ovens! How it was in my mashed up cauliflower is anyone's guess! And apparently my sons sausages were Richmond ones fried - said as if this was premium sausages cooked to perfection! They were cheap and disgusting and most decent eating places these days serve proper butchers sausages cooked properly not quickly over Fried! It's not hard to do! The apology was half hearted and not sincere! My daughter had not really started on her food so we decided to leave. I had to tell the waitress that I was not paying for the food, just the drinks! Again a pathetic half hearted apology! No wonder the place was empty on a Saturday night! The worst food experience I've ever had!

Nice clean country pub in a small village. It has a pleasant little outside eating and drinking area. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Very wide ranging menu which made for a pleasant but difficult choice. My wife ordered pork stuffed with sausage and I ordered steak stroganoff . To be honest mine was just OK but my wife said that hers was lacking taste. When she looked at the two slices of pork she believed they weren't made from scratch at the pub but were bought in catering packs as both pieces were too regular in shape. The chips and veg were good although the chips were frozen. However to be fair we discovered that the chef was on holiday a few the manager was standing in for him/her. It could be much better if the chef had been on site.

Me and a friend visited here and were pleasantly surprised by the amount of food we got considering the prices are very reasonable for pub grub. It wasn't the highest standard of food but still a good feed and plenty of it!! It's got a good atmosphere and friendly staff.. It became quite busy as we were there so obviously a popular place. Recommended for a cheap pub grub night out

Its been over a year since I was previously here; its far better now than it was. Look at the menu (see pic); there's even a Fillet Steak at £15.50. Perfect service, even though quite busy, and with very varied orders. Children get massive burgers (twice as big as the little ones really need); Brie starter one of the best versions of that, anywhere. Beef medallions brilliant. Parking a bit tight if busy. If they dont answer your phonecall first time, its because they concentrating on service!

My husband and I have been trying to find somewhere within Carlisle that offers proper home made cooked food. The Lowther Arms was recommended to us by a friend and I have got to say it was just what I have been looking for. We both had the steak and ale pie that just melted in your mouth, when my husband ordered the food and began to pay the manager said not to pay until we have eaten and was satisfied with our choice of food, well this is a first and I thought that was very nice of him. We will most definitely be back, so peaceful and just what we want. Thank you

This place should be entered for Britain in Bloom so good are the flower displays. They start serving dinner at 6 pm and, if you are a party or are going at busy times, I would certainly book. We were the second people in so had no trouble getting a table at 6 pm.I had the fish pie with new potatoes, which were full of flavour and cauliflower. Now I don't like cauliflower but the chef must have known, as it was mashed up and was so tasty I'm going to do it this way at home from now on. My husband had the Cumbrian sausage once again (he says you have to try them all while you are in the county then choose the best!). Lots of locals were eating here so we figured it had to be good and it was. Would certainly go again if in the area.

The lowther arms is a lovely country pub and food is delicious and resonantly priced. However it's clear that staff have had no training in service. We were told to only sit on 1 of 2 tables for 3 when the pub was practically empty which was slightly annoying that we were squashed around a tiny table. Evening menus were on tables instead of lunch menus and it was only 1pm. I'm not going to go into detail but the waitress was just quite annoying so I doubt we will be returning.

The Lowther Arms is one of the most attractive pubs in the area and looked very welcoming on a fine Saturday evening when we (my wife, our two kids under 10, and I) ate dinner there recently. We had not pre-booked but did not have trouble getting an inside table. Other parties around us had booked their tables in advance. The pub meals were decent but not anything too special: steak and ale pie, steak and stilton pie (a special on that day) and the seafood pie were among our orders. The barman poured me a glass of white wine when I asked for a cabernet, he must have simply misheard me (or not understood a funny Canadian accent). The pint of real ale he poured me was very nice. The atmosphere was marred by the bad 80s music which the barman adjusted in volume several times during our meal, as if everyone's enjoyment was going to be determined by their ability to hear it properly. I grew up with that music, but 30 years on I don't need to hear it throughout my meal.

The service from the young lady behind the bar was excellent, but I'm afraid the food only gets an OK rating from me on this occasion. Looking at other reviews perhaps I was just unlucky this time so would probably try again if I was in the same area.

The best place. Character and interest. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. The food was exquisite. The room, though tired in a few spots due to it being an old building, was comfortable, spacious and well equipped. Only a short way from us but will definitely return. Thank you.

This is the second time we have been here now. The first time was just for some take away chips and curry sauce. Returned a few weeks later again on the way home from the lakes and had the pensioners special (we aren’t pensioners). Perfect size if you aren’t starving. Fish was lovely with light crispy batter, lovely chips and again … their amazing curry sauce with the bits in. This place (plaice) is lovely and clean. As a lot of fish and chip places can be a bit on the grubby side so keep up the good work.
