Honestly a very mixed one for this place I’ve had afternoon tea here earlier in the year it was great, service a bit slow but over all great. However, recently we went for lunch and what a shambles! Firstly sat on a dirty table that was then cleaned while we sat at it, had to wait 20 minutes for someone to take our order. Tea for 2 the cups and spoons were filthy we had to ask for more then had to wait a further 10 minutes to find someone to ask for sugar the glass for a coke was covered in Greasy finger marks. The food came pretty quick ( probably because non of it was cooked) fish and chips was the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had chips were freezing and still had a thick layer of fat on them from where they’ve been blanched then put in the fridge and not cooked properly and for long enough afterwards, the fish was off it tasted so strong it was inedible, mushy peas freezing so over all that meal wasn’t eaten the ploughman’s well that was very average when it says rare beef it’s raw not rare, had much better elsewhere. Made the waitress aware of all the above issues and wasn’t interested just said ohh I’ll talk to the chef never tried to rectify any of it. Then to top it off getting asked to move half way through eating for a workman to get to plug to test it just took the biscuit I understand these things need to be done but come on you get them done when you’re closed not open with guests in. Over all a terrible experience and really below expectations for the sort of pace they try / claim to be.

Attended for afternoon tea as a couple. One had classic afternoon tea and the other had the fish and chip afternoon tea. The portion size on the fish and chip afternoon tea was minuscule. The haddock was smaller than a fish finger, one prawn in batter , one piece of scampi. The prawn cocktail was served in a 3cm round ramekin that you normally get your tomato sauce in! The chips were greasy as the oil needed to be changed. You got a big portion of tartare sauce (the same size as the prawn cocktail:-) fish and chip afternoon tea definitely not worth the money.

My friend & I have enjoyed lunch at The Lounge in Palm Court several times recently and thoroughly enjoyed it every time. However Fridays lunch outshone all the others for me. We chose to share a mixed platter of sandwiches comprising 2 generous 'fingers'of soft granary bread filled with Coronation chicken, cream cheese & chive, smoked salmon & cream cheese, roast ham & mustard & roast beef. They were quite simply served with a basket of plain crisps some really tasty coleslaw & a small lettuce salad. We added a portion of big fat beautifully cooked chips & I was in heaven!! Each flavour was soooo tasty with my favourite being the chunky coronation chicken which was spiced to perfection. Get there & try this I insist, it was just scrumptious.

We had a lovely Christmas break at the Palm Court. Staff were great, food was good and entertainment in the Lounge on an evening was fine. We had a large Superking room which was good, the only down side being the heating system was not good. We had to ask for a heater which we had to leave on for the duration of our stay. Other people complained their rooms were too hot. The lounge area was lovely decorated for the festive season and every guest received a gift.

Booked an Afternoon Tea and a Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea as a holiday treat. We love afternoon tea and this one was excellent. Lovely ribbon sandwiches followed by an assortment of savouries or sweets depending on which version you chose, we shared everything so had little tasters of all of the treats. Standouts were the fish cake, cheese scone with bacon jam and cream, the choux bun and the delicious ham in the sandwiches. Tea was hot and was topped up whenever needed. Staff pleasant and helpful and the lounge itself was lovely. One of the best afternoon teas we have had and will definitely return.

passing the Palm Court on our way to a different restaurant but decided we liked the ambience and menu, so changed plan and walked in without s reservation. The bar tender unfortunately refused our request to look at the menu unless he knew that the restaurant staff were able to accommodate our request for a table and sent us to hotel reception, who took us back to the bar area for us to wait for the restaurant staff. Eventually we were told there would be a table available and we chose our food from the menu. By the time the waiter came to take our order 45 minutes later, they had run out of my main course choice. The starter and main course however, was very tasty and nicely presented. The dessert was unfortunately disappointing but acceptable. The cost was very reasonable, the restaurant itself very nice and all in all, we had an enjoyable evening. I would have given 5 stars had we not been messed about so much by the bartender and waiter before our meal.

We saw this place mentioned in a "Places to Eat" brochure which we picked up whilst in Scarborough and thought it looked lovely. We weren't disappointed. The lounge is large, airy, elegant and beautifully decorated and furnished and laid out with separate areas housing comfortable settees and easy chairs. When we arrived, quite a few groups were tucking in to what looked like very tasty plates of afternoon teas. Having eaten a big lunch we settled for tea only. Service was friendly and quick and we settled to enjoy the surroundings. Wifi is not brilliant and a bit intermittent which could be a problem if you're a resident. All in all a pleasant experience.

I have to arrive early in order to park my car nearby, as I am disabled so it is usual for me to find us a suitable table for up to 6 or 7 of us. I was met by a less than helpful waitress who seemed very put out when I said there would be six or seven of us arriving because we hadn't booked. We have been meeting there for years, and as all the ladies are local, have never needed to book before. I was told that we would just have to make do with whatever tables we could find, because most of them were already laid up for Afternoon Tea. This was at 11.30am! Soon another friend arrived, and a different waitress came to help, The contrast was amazing! She moved other chairs around to accommodate us all, and even brought a second table to make eating for us easier. In the end there were 7 of us, and we all enjoyed our light lunch, and a lovely natter. We were still there at 3pm, and up to then, most of the laid tables where still unoccupied, which added to our annoyance that we had been denied the comfort of being able to use one of the tables 'already laid up'. When you consider that each of us spent around £10, they could very easily have lost that business if the first waitress had continued to be as obstructive as she was when I first arrived, because we were seriously considering walking out and going elsewhere (Scarborough is not exactly a desert when it comes to eating places). We did find the piano too loud though. I know this should be about the food, and that was good, but again, when our coffees arrived they had to be taken back because they were lukewarm. We were told that they are not allowed to serve them hot, so how come other restaurants can serve them without this problem?

The bill then came in (for my three courses alone - my wife's was separate) at £45. A little steep for Scarborough in October I would have thought.

We did not stay in the hotel on this occasion but had dinner there one evening (excellent) and went back the following day for afternoon tea, ordering one afternoon tea and one "Gentlemens tea". We have had afternoon teas here previously but on this occasion both could only be described has poor and far from the standard we had come to expect. Scones which were far from fresh, limited and mediocre sandwiches and the desserts/ cakes very different to what is shown in the image. The Gentlemens version was also a dissapointment. And even one of the cake stands was almost on the point of collapse - loose fittings with the top layer leaning over.A poor experience made clear to the staff when I paid the bill. The Lounge at the Palm Court is allegedly open all day long, serving breakfast, morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon teas. The menu is imaginative and full of things we find we do want to eat and we enjoy them when they arrive! The eggs Benedict are especially good. So is the Caesar salad topped with grilled chicken, as the chicken is still warm, cooked to order, then added to the top of the salad - not simply pre-cooked or bought in and added, in unappetizing cold and congealed slices, straight from the refrigerator, as often happens with this dish. The haddock fishcakes are homemade and also very good. Even the poached eggs on English muffins with crispy American bacon are perfectly cooked and it all lives up to its billing. So far, so good! But we went in here one morning about 9am, as the advertising board outside announced "The Lounge - Open all day" and "Breakfast" and we were dying for some eggs, crispy bacon and good coffee. We sat on one of the sofas (the food in The Lounge is served at coffee tables, with sofas and armchairs as the seating) and we waited. And waited. There was only one waitress on duty and she was busy rearranging the garden furniture outside on the terrace. She had seen us, however, and finally (after perhaps 10 or 15 minutes) she sauntered over and we tried to order some breakfast. "Oh" she said "Sorry but you'll have to wait. The chef won't do any breakfasts in here until 10am. He's busy in the kitchen with the residents' breakfasts." By now It was about 9.15am. "You want us to wait another 45 minutes before we can order any breakfast?" we asked. She nodded. "Yes - or you could go out and come back at 10!" We went out. We didn't go back at 10, as there are countless places in town where they are happy to serve breakfast before 10am! So - this is a very good place for lunch or for coffee, or for a drink (the barman is a great character, always very funny and always very friendly) - but not for breakfast, unless you like to eat it pretty late.

On the strength of this visit I have given an average score as our lunch this time was so so, my fish cake dish mushy & tasteless, puds just ok. On previous occasions we have had afternoon tea which I have thought ok for the price, so I could still recommend this place for that. Surroundings are pleasant enough, in a hotely kind of way, the large room light & bright, & service delightful. All diner's were absolutely perished though, every one of us sat in our coats, some even in bobble hats! We departed just before hypothermia set in. Take care not to make our mistake of not buying a parking ticket, the car spaces are right out front of the hotel & in deep conversation we forgot that the car parking here is actually run by Scarborough Council. It is clearly marked as such but can catch you out if thoughts are elsewhere.

(Ham/piccalilli, smoked salmon/cream cheese, coronation chicken and cheese/pickle) plus scones, shot glass trifles, macaroons, mini brownies and chocolate/walnut cakes. All good quality. Champagne was fresh and fizzy. Works Christmas party. Very nicely decorated seemed a little over the top for a large of guys but we were all greeted warmly by the staff. The food was very good and the service was to a good standard. Reasonable prices. Great would go again.

We arrived at the Palm Court Hotel for some lunch with high expectations as the decor suggests something quite special, this is not the case at all! We sat down at 13:00, our order was taken and we sat in the pleasant lounge among 2 other tables of couples (the rest of the lounge was empty) our drinks came with no problem and were well presented. We then waited a further hour for our food, which I may say was 3 cold sandwiches with crisps and homemade coleslaw.... An hour, really? When this was pointed out to the waitress she replied 'well we've had a lot of orders on at the same time, it's your baguette that's taken time to cook' after which we glanced at the now 3 other occupied tables, one of which had eaten and been cleared despite ordering the same food at the same time as us, another table had scones and tea and the 3rd table had eggs Benedict (they ordered after us and managed to receive a cooked lunch before us). This excuse definitely did not cut it! I could have driven home and made myself a sandwich quicker (I live in York!) I dread to think what the wait on food is like when you have a restaurant full of people eating hot food! An absolute disaster of a lunch, we left hungry and very disappointed. I suggest management take some time to re-assess the kitchen staff as they are clearly not capable of a simple task, a little concerning in a hotel so large!

We stayed at the palm court after family recommended it to us. This time we tried to book over the bank holiday but unsurprisingly it was fully booked. So we had the unfortunate pleasure of staying at a neighbouring hotel for just bed and breakfast.Over the weekend we had meals in the lounge and restaurant and for 2 fussy eaters the hotel and staff could not have been more helpful. We tried the afternoon tea with champagne which was out of this world. Staff smile, check everything is to your satisfaction and the service we received was first class. Not once did we have to stand as regularly we were asked if we wish for anything else and if everything was ok. With service like this it is no wonder that the Hotel was full!!!The restaurant meal on the Friday still has us talking about it. As soon as we were taken to our table we were presented with homemade breads, breadsticks and Olives before a truly wonderful 3 course offer with a bottle of wine.We have booked for a weekend in December which cannot come soon enough. Thank you Palm Court , keep up the great work.Trevor and Elaine

Pros:• We had booked and when we arrived we were expected and the table was set ready for us.• Having a pianist• Good food for an afternoon tea.• Wide choice of interesting teas• Good price for the champagne• Willing to be flexible on times.• We weren’t hassled to leave – you can stay as long as you want to.• Good service from the waitress• Pleasant relaxing atmosphere.Cons:• If you are sitting close to the piano it is a bit intrusive on your conversation• Poor choice of sandwiches for vegetarians (example – sliced tomato compared to smoked salmon for the meat eaters) and we were given all white bread.• Unwilling to provide any additional sandwiches, scones or cakes.• Poor quality jam - I asked the waiter who cleared away what it was; he didn’t know but said he would find out, but he never came back.• Toilets need refurbishment.• The view out of the front windows is just a car park – a few planters would help here.

Having seen local advertising we gave this a try yesterday evening. At £55 for a three course meal for two including a bottle of wine it sounded great value. The hotel lounge is lovely and a great place to enjoy a pre dinner drink. Alarm bells rang as we went into the restaurant to see only two occupied tables at 8.30 pm on a Saturday evening in main tourist season. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and should be performing better than this. Our wine arrived quickly together with a platter of bread and olives. Very good so far except as soon as we started to eat them our starters arrived. The crab fritters and pâté were both very good and we thought we were on to a winner but sadly not to be. The main course lamb shank was dry and the belly pork very similar. Both dishes looked like pre cooked and then microwaved meats. There was very little in the way of potato and vegetables with either dish. My dessert of Yorkshire Parkin with rhubarb ice cream was awful, just a small square of warmed up Parkin , again microwaved judging by how crisp it was on the outside. My husband had the cheese plate but it does cost a hefty £3.95 extra. Almost as soon as we had started our food the other diners left and the staff were engaged in setting all the tables round us for breakfast. Nobody asked if everything was okay and I doubt they cared anyway. We had our coffee in the lounge with the supposed petit fours, actually one tiny piece each of some sort of chocolate fudge! Scarborough needs more good restaurants but sadly this is not one of them. Given the number of staff in the restaurant versus the number of diners the hotel needs to seriously look at whether the restaurant is worth opening for evening meals.

After an indifferent experience at the Brewers Fayre on 5/6/13 as a result of a two day stay at the neighbouring Premier Inn, I decided to go up market for dinner on the evening of 6/6/13. What a pleasure it was and well worth the expense. The staff were cheerful and welcoming and explained despite my non residency I was able to be served in the restaurant. The soup was excellent and an ideal precursor for the Braised Shoulder of Lamb whiich was exquisite with accompanying shallots and green beans and mash. The Chocolate Delice plus a generous coffee pot rounded off.a wonderful meal . The staff were attentive and helpful without being intrusive. Wonderful ambience and a credit to a highly recommended institution. I will return.Marvellous.

My mother and I were looking for a local place to have afternoon-tea in in scarborough and friends recommended The Palm Court hotel. Having not visited the hotel for nearly ten years we were astounded when entering the front door which from what we saw has seen a dramatic transformation throughout. As soon as we entered we knew we had found something very special. The Palm Court has by far exceeded our expectations on this occasion. We had quite simply the best afternoon-tea ever! The room where the afternoon-tea takes place is a very beautiful Lounge, with a magnificent decoration. The quality of the food itself was absolutely fantastic. I am looking forward to go back and I don't want to have afternoon tea anywhere elseThe staff were immaculately presented, professional, freindly and really welcoming. I really fell in love with that hotel and will be visiting there for sure in the future.I warmly recommend it to my friends and colleagues
