Sadly this hotel is now badly managed, unwelcoming atmosphere and decor. unloved and uncared for. The bare minimum being done. The hotel is not clean. All carpets around hotel not regularly clean. Dining area and bar untidy and dirty. Broken things and random items just dumped around hotel. Indoor/outdoor windows dirty. Only staff there were young waitress, young bar girl and a young cook. Noone in charge and apparently Manager away so told email Saram hotels as they unable to deal with my complaints. I would have asked for money back and left but noone to make that decision!!! Had to endure shoddy place and staff instead. Noone cares what this place looks like. My room not clean and old yellowy stains on duvet cover. Only the view from my bedroom was pleasant.

We wish we had read some of the reviews before coming to this hotel for lunch halfway through our 12km walk. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and are concerned about the food hygiene standards and sheer lack of any care put in the food we were served. I ordered a panini with coleslaw and tortilla chips. The panini had a hair in it and the “homemade” coleslaw was mostly mayonnaise with some large chunks of onion and cabbage mixed in. Most of my tortilla chips were the crumbled remnants from the bottom of a bag. My boyfriend ordered a veggie burger with chips and salad for £9.50. The burger comprised of a stale bun roughly cut open with a defrosted veggie burger inside. No sauce, no lettuce, no other toppings whatsoever, and the young lad serving it actually said, “Uhh, I think this is a veggie burger”. Then to our dismay there was a large finger-shaped hole in the centre of the veggie patty … was this to test if the centre was cooked through!? The chips were soggy and lukewarm, and the salad was a few roughly chopped chunks of vegetables on 2 or 3 pieces of lettuce. Overall a complete waste of £20, apart from our cold pints of Diet Coke!

Shoddy service. Greeted by youngsters that didn't know the job. On entry I was asked, do you want breakfast. We said yes and asked what time and what we could have. ( no menu just told you can have full breakfast, when asked was there any other choice, she said we could do a bacon butty? Very vague.) In the morning we went for breakfast only to find you had to pay £10 for the privilege, again no mention of this at reception so didn't pay. The breakfast wasn't worth a third of that. Bread left out that was dry and hard. Poached eggs that weren't cooked and cold. No hot water for tea, when this was pointed out we got, well it has been out a while. Seemed too much trouble to request hot water??? Bedroom in need of sprucing up. Curtains off rail, toilet door won't shut. Basic things that should be sorted for the price you pay.

There has never been an occasion when I have found food nauseatingly repulsive, but this was the first. The menu contains more spelling mistakes than a dyslexics exercise book and they have clearly been laminated by a two year old. Foolishly we persisted with a food order as we were tired and weary from travelling. The menu choices were standard pub fare - straight off the cheapest frozen food catalogue - what could go wrong? Half of the dishes were not available and obviously those that were, were less than inspiring. No garnishes, no seasoning, the cheapest of cheap and nasty sauces and condiments and dirty cutlery. The wine list was basically unavailable as they “had not had a big delivery”? Whilst wallowing in bland , insipid, mediocracy and without the need for intervention by the imbecile in the kitchen there was little going for the dishes other that to say there were more E numbers than a Brussels phone book. When said imbecile got involved, this took a deeper dive. The “salad” which originally comprised tomato, lettuce and cucumber when it was mauled around a week before, had then been left in a warm kitchen. It was patently obvious that the Cretin in the kitchen knew that it had become a brown fermenting mess because they had tried to disguise the fact by mixing in a few fresh leaves to enliven it. The billions of bacteria didn’t need any help!! Needless to say I took a healthy mouthful, not having checked the content in any great detail. I will not illustrate the consequence of that action any further other than to say it will remain with me for ever. The service is equally deplorable - when anyone can be bothered - the restaurant is a thoroughfare between bar and restaurant and the dining experience is akin to eating in the pit lane at Silverstone. Given there are customers in both the garden and the restaurant- you will not see a member of staff in either of these areas. This place is deplorable - avoid at all costs

Myself and my o/h stayed here for 1 night as a birthday night out, the position and the views sold it to me. Unfortunately or fortunately perhaps, the most recent reviews were not on otherwise my choice may not have been this hotel, a lot of disappointment and awfulness on each one. So, 3 out of 5, was perhaps a bit generous but I honestly don't think judging by my evening meal and the pleasantness of the 2 lads serving that 3 is wrong. What is generous is the rating based on the following morning, a total lack of organisation or business attitude amongst the day staff the reason for this change of feelings.... when checking in last night, we were asked which breakfast we wanted, full English requested, when breakfast came round we were told no hot breakfasts left, it was only 9:20,breakfast not over till 10am. So, would I come back, the views are amazing, the rest of the staff and the organisation, other than the 2 lads poor, I have been involved in the service industry and the staff on the morning seemed to be playing at this which is annoying as it's not shy on the cost front. Perhaps this hotel can pull itself out of the pit it's in before it loses too many customers.

We used to stay here some years ago and were looking forward to another visit. What a let down. Although the staff were pleasant and the view is still beautiful the overall impression is one of a place looking very tired and in desperate need of a revamp. The decor in the room was old and shabby, the light pull in the bathroom was filthy, with a used towel on the back of the door. The guest information sheets were much used which didn’t inspire confidence. Wi fi was almost non existent. We were going to eat in but headed up the road when we saw the menu, breakfast was pretty average. I’d love to visit again but won’t be returning soon.

Visited 10th June @ 17.50 - wanted to book a table for food. The female behind the bar was less than helpful and actually made me feel like I was distracting her from something more important! (when I walked in she was leaning against the bar looking into the distance). She was completely uninterested and verging on rude! The man behind me even commented on it! Decided to finish our drinks and eat elsewhere - somewhere we felt more welcome! Would not suggest going here if you want a friendly place to eat.

Plenty of staff but seemingly only one young boy working. Cream tea consisted of scones and strawberries with apricot jam, no butter and eventually brought some pouring cream. One tea bag per large pot of tea, flat fizzy drinks, service super slow and food less than adequate with no lettuce for a BLT. Could be a goldmine but run like fawlty towers, 10/10 for the comedy value, just a shame we had to pay for the privilege. Didn’t even bother complaining as it was clear that the staff couldn’t care less.

Sadly 1st and last visit. Been to Runswick a number of times and had yet to visit the hotel. Made it our mission this time and went for lunch. Sadly not up to expectations. Not sure entirely what’s going on but either the staff aren’t getting paid or are totally fed up. But felt distinct lack of care or attention to roles. Such a shame as this place could be fantastic. No real service and the place wasn’t busy we were only a few of the small handful of customers. Don’t think we were asked at all if everything was ok food etc and had to ask twice to order extra drinks. Won’t make money if you don’t attend to paying customers. The owners of this lovely building really need to take note of the recent horrendous reviews and do something!

Nice views over the bay from window tables, even when dark, as the lights from sea anglers are visible. The menu was not extensive, but the meals we had were all very good. Prices were very reasonable, and we also took advantage of a Monday-Wednesday 25% discount on food and drink. The staff were friendly and efficient despite there being only a small number, multitasking in the bar, restaurant and hotel reception. Main meals to be recommended, fish & chips, and the steak and ale pie.

The cleaner had left dirty clothes in room and there was black mould on bath - dust down sides of furniture . I had to clean this with detolWipes . Breakfast was very poor for price offered cooked no continental or toast which given they are charging 15 quid a couple was poor . The Cliffemount hotel is a beautiful place to visit. We were welcomed very politely by Wayne, shown our magnificent very spacious room(Mulgrave) with the most amazing view of Runswick bay. All the staff were very polite, helpful, friendly and attentive. Who Whoever Wayne's boss is needs to give this top man an instant massive pay rise as he goes through hoops to help and is literary doing EVERYTHING. Anna too is an amazingly helpful very hard worker, as too is Angela. The food is of a very high standard and reasonably priced. Table service is very attentive (Wayne again). When looking for somewhere to stay on the Yorkshire coast I couldn't believe how expensive it can be off season! However this hotel was reasonably priced so I thought I would give it a go.From the offset the staff were warm, welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. My room was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. Bed was huge and very comfy. Hot drinks and biscuits in the room. The view of the bay and the balcony off my room was a lovely suprise. I was very impressed! Heating worked a treat, we certainly needed it after spending a day in the wind and the cold. Breakfast was delicious. Thick bacon and the chef was happy to make ammendments, swapping items on the standard breakfast. I had one evening meal during my stay. The choice is limited, bit the food is good. Could do with more dessert options (I'm a girl who loves her puddings!) The bar is well stocked and I enjoyed a couple of drinks in the evening. Dogs aren't allowed in the restaurant (understandable) but staff are more than happy to set up a table in the bar area. The location is awesome. So beautiful and quiet. All in all excellent value for money and wonderful staff that are a credit to the hotel.

As for the food! Exceptional! The chef goes out of his way to make the things you like, the way you like! Limited menu, but it’s out of season and I expect no less. we booked in after seeing this hotel on four in a bed. the room was clean, spacious and lovely in fact the room and views were perfect. our dog Harley was made to feel very welcome too. very friendly staff. however there was no ice in the bar on both the 21st and 22nd (our anniversary) the breakfast was beyond horrendous. £4 extra for 2 people for the cooked breakfast (confused because this place advertises break fast included) bteakfast was not taken by order (like on the show) was a buffet style with tomatoes out a tin (not grilled) the sausages were cheap and inedible honestly the worst I have ever eaten (I had 2 bites and left them)! no mushrooms and soggy hash browns. there were no eggs on offer at the buffett, when we asked we were told we can order a fried egg but it will take some time or there are boiled eggs at the buffet... a far cry from the salmon eggs etc we saw on the show! and disappointing when you want something special celebrating your anniversary. we have travelled to 31 countries we often travel for business and this was the top 5 worst breakfasts we have had the misfortune of experiencing.the continental was terrible too, nothing fresh and commercial pre bought croissants in packets it's a shame because this place has some strong positives and great potential. we will come back for the views and friendly staff but eat somewhere else sadly. we did tell the lady at reception on check out that they need to improve on the break fast and when you go on a show you should do what you offer guests normally not make a special effort I.e flowers in the room etc we did not have flowers in our room. it's a tired 3 star but with standards improved and the location they can aim/ aspire for more

We ate inside today even though there is outdoor seating it’s basic pub benches and smoking is allowed outside which is a turn off when there’s food being served. Also the grounds are uneven which is not very good if your not very mobile however the views are spectacular whether you eat indoors or outside. That said the service is very good and the lunch menu is varied with a choice of hot meals and sandwiches/salads. It’s a little pricey for lunch because it is restaurant class. Not keen on the seating covered with white “dresses” with black bows this may be for a special occasion but it did seem permanent and quite honestly not necessary.

I appreciate The Cliffemount manu isn't expensive but c'monnnn excite a bit! The food we ate this afternoon was just about acceptable, nothing more. We had a really good nights sleep so quiet, the food was excellent and a fantastic breakfast, all you could want. The weather was really kind to us and we had a fantastic photo shoot and caught the Supermoon over the bay wow!!! We will be back and love the quiet times keep them coming perfect. We had room number 3, a standard double. Comfortable and all you could need. Improvements that would help... the mirror in the bathroom is too high for me at 5'3", the shower is really good but the fitting needs a little attention, could be improved with a mirror near a plug point for hair appliances. Just niggles but ladies would be happier lol.If you are looking for a great personal service and a fabulous setting with views to die for, peace and quiet you cannot go wrong with the Cliffemout Hotel. Also there is a fantastic walk from the beach up over the tops on the coastline to Sandsends which is about 6 mile and further ont Whitby then. We did this the first time in late October, amazing and so we did the return walk too...... spectacular!!

We visited some time ago and were less than impressed. After finding out it had been taken over at this time we decided to give it a second chance. I went in to look at the menu and to ask whether they were serving. I walked in an the place was deathly quiet with just myself and another lady at the bar. The young lad behind the bar was obviously struggling with the order and till. I had been stood waiting for some time. The (I presume) manager was sat at a table near the bar, he did come over but ignored me and didn't offer at all to help his member of staff. I ended up walking out- I'd left my dog in the car and didn't want to leave him any longer. Felt so sorry for the lad behind the bar. At best this is a drink outside in summer place. Atmosphere, service and food is so much better down the road at the Runswick!

We spent the weekend caravaning in Runswick and visited the pub twice. Drinks after our beach walk. It's a lovely place to have a drink and sit overlooking the bay on a sunny afternoon. Then we returned for tea that evening. Food was really nice and the staff very welcoming and attentive. Would recommend to anyone visiting Runswick Bay.

We had a large family meal in this beautiful location. We were a party of 8 and we had not booked but they were happy to accommodate us.Most of us had roast dinners which were lovely and nothing was too much trouble as we kept adding extras on like extra potatoes.....you can never have too many :) extra boat of gravy etcSomeone had a ploughmans lunch which looked beautiful it was a traditional ploughmans that took me right back to childhood pub lunches in the country just cheese, pickled onions and thick chunky farmhouse bread with relish.....It was a lovely day out in a stunning location with beautiful views.I would highly recommend it.

Myself, husband and children stayed at the Cliffemount hotel for the weekend so had a good chance to try the menu... And what joy it was too!! The first night we had a mix my husband had fish and chips which he said and quote "it's the best fish and chips" he's had! I had the steak and chips which was cooked completely to my liking although they have no children's menu yet (which I did ask about and was told they are working on one) they were very accommodating to their smaller appetites my two boys picked burgers from the light bites range which for the price was an absolute amazing portion and my little girl wanted the carbonara which they did a small portion for her and I must say (taking a sneaky bite) was the best carbonara I had tasted and when we visit again I will be getting it myself then after that feast we decided to be greedy and get a dessert which we all picked the chocolate brownie and ice cream it was so delicious I didn't even think about getting my phone out and sharing it with the world, it didn't hang around long enough.Breakfast was fabulous the continental is just right not to much your brain goes food overload in the morning and not to small that you can't find anything and as for the cooked breakfast well... Gorgeous local produce cooked to perfection!Finally...Sunday roast which my husband described as "better than yours" was beautiful the roast beef just melted in your mouth and the chicken was moist and succulent!!! Can't wait for our next visit!!!!!!!!

My wife and I stayed here for a week in a room with balcony overlooking the sea. The view from these rooms is superb...............! With a telescope , not needed for the views, it was great for picking out shipping in the bay!Shane the manager made us both feel very welcome, and we will definetely consider staying again. The hotel is very dog friendly, which we approve of, but which did cause an issue when an inconsiderate/irresponsible dog owner decided to shut his dog up in the room next to us and go for a meal............The poor dog was barking several times a minute, which caused my wife great distress. We had to ring the reception three times in 45 minutes to get this situation addressed. It became apparant during our discussions with the under manager that he was not taking full control of the issue, which was causing more stress for my wife and the animal that had been locked in. I complained of this, and was generously given that evenings stay free .To summarise, a wonderful location, with superb views, staff are all very friendly and Shane could not do enough to help! You really should consider staying here if you want to stay in North Yorkshire!

We used to enjoy eating here for the view and a solid menu, well executed. Nothing fancy but pretty good. Vegetarian options were a stand out.Last week was a huge disappointment with the menu limited and the food patchy to say the least. The half the mussels were tight closed and had to be left and the fish pie seemed more skin than fish.We won't be returning any time soon.

Whenever we come to Runswick we always visit here. We had already visited earlier in the week for drinks and it was still as nice (and dog friendly) as ever. Having eaten here before and the food being lovely we decided on this occasion to make a night of it so we set up a tab.The barman was lovely fussing over our dog and getting him a bowl of water. The only disappointment was the menu. Just 5 choices none of which appealed to us. For any veggies you'd only have 1 choice of some strange pasta and fruit concoction. In the end we left after our drink. We did notice and hear them say behind the bar how deathly quiet it had been-we were the only couple in....maybe this is why!Such a shame as it has the most amazing views across the bay. The last time we visited it was hard to choose what you wanted!

My partner and I stopped off here for a drink, and decided on an impromptu bite to eat. We both fancied the chicken, only I enquired if it was served on the bone, as I find it off putting, and was assured it was served as a full roasted breast, well, it came served looking like a full roasted breast, but on closer inspection, it was 2 slices, served on a dollop of mashed potato, along with a Yorkshire pudding that I can only presume was cooked in bulk and reheated, you touched it with your knife and it turned to crumbs, the roast potatoes; 2 of, had skins approximately 5mm thick, they'd been reheated that often, the only positive I can give, is the cream sauce it was served with, and the fact it was only £11. Extremely disappointed, left without making a fuss, and certainly won't be going back.

The Cliffemount Hotel & Restaurant are apparently under new management - And all I can say is WOW .... If these guys can maintain the standards of excellence in service, hospitality, fine dining and accommodation that my partner & I were exposed to, then there will be very few Hotels in the area that will be able to compete. The staff and management are faultless and so warm and welcoming - we had wonderful / second to none customer service during our short stay; Our evening meal was absolutely delicious and the most enjoyable dining experience I've had for some time... The food was beautifully presented, exquisite on the eye... Perfectly cooked and tasted magnificent ... Compliments to the outstanding chef for sure. The Restaurant itself looks out over Runswick Bay providing spectacular views in a truly gorgeous setting. Breakfast is served in the same dining area and was equally as delicious as our evening meal the night before. Our room - was absolutely fantastic also, spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming with beautiful decor and furnishings and the bed was so comfortable that we honestly didn't want to leave ! All in all I simply can't find any faults whatsoever with The Cliffemount and I can't recommend it enough - It has shot to the top of my 'must go again soon' list and I will be back there soon for sure. What a fabulously relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable experience. If you're in North Yorkshire and thinking of visiting the Whitby, Scarborough coast - then I thoroughly recommend you check this place out ! Outstanding !

I have known Cliffemount literally all my life - it was built by my grandfather and so was the place for annual family holidays for as long as I can remember. I now take my own children (in their 30s!) and their partners back for family get-togethers in the summer. We have been there for lunch today... The weather was fabulous, and as always, the view over the bay was amazing. The food was also good and came soon after we ordered so no complaints about service. Sadly though, not for the first time, the owner can come across as rather sharp. We had a dog with us today, and they are apparently - according to clear signs - welcome in the bar. However, when we took ours in, a blanket on the floor and a dog's bowl were whisked up out of the way quicker than we could say "Hello". We were told "These are for my dog, he lives here!" Fair enough, but perhaps don't leave them in such a public place... As I say, it's not the first time that we have felt the "welcome" is actually a little less than friendly. The café down the bank is likely to be our destination in future... today it was just so busy that we made the trek back up to Cliffemount. Sad to write this in a review, because I have such happy memories of it, but a genuinely warm and friendly welcome costs nothing and would make SUCH a difference to the experience.

Arrived at the cliffemount hotel restaurant at 5pm, 4 adults with 3 children 6,2 and 3 months. We were told the restaurant didn't open until 5.30 so we sat and had a drink. At around 6.15 we were told by the barman the restaurant would open soon but they didn't have any highchairs (fine we didn't need one) and the children had to be out of the restaurant area at 7.30 which we thought would be ok if they would open up baring in mind it was almost an hour after they said. The manageress eventually took our order at 6.30 (leaving us an hour to eat and get out!!) in the bar before we went in.She reminded us that children had to be out by 7.30 then told my excitable 2 year old that she would need to behave when she went into the restaurant. The impression she gave is that she didn't really want us there with the children which made us feel extremely uncomfortable. My daughter behaved very well inside the restaurant but , as children often do, got a little bit excitable because of the long wait. On the plus side the food was very nice and our waiter managed to uplift our experience as he was lovely and spoke to the children in a kind way. Unfortunately we did feel we had to rush and leave as soon as we had finished although we could of stayed in the bar after I'm sure, the manageress made us very uncomfortable as she clearly wasn't happy to have kids there. If it wasn't for our very pleasant waiter I feel we would of come away very disappointed. In a nutshell families with young children avoid this place!!

we stumbled across hotel for a drink on a tuesday, mangeress was very nice and met the chef, who was v pleasant, and they sold us the food with their decription of it and the chef bought out a large salver of venison which looked delicious..we booked in on thursday. We had a lovely window seat with superb view. My wife chose chicken kiev, I chose the venison fillet at £23. The kiev was excellent. My meal only had two small medallions of venison. It was nice, but not outstanding. I explained to the waiter, a young rotund chap with a goatee that although nice, I was disappointed with the two small medallions considering the price of of the meal. He shrugged and said 'that's how it is' I wasn't entirely happy with this, and reiterated this to the second waiter, when I paid the bill, a nice chap with buddy holly style glasses, and he said 'oh sorry about that' - I wasn't happy with this outcome and asked for the bill to be adjusted accordingly for the minsicule portions and asked to speak to a manager. He went away, came back alone and said he could take six pounds from the bill for this. I accepted this, but wasn't really happy, The manageress didn't seem to be working that night, otherwise I would have raised the issue with her. On leaving the restaurant we walked past the first waiter who was talking to the barman, who looked away and neither said goodnight...different from the first night when our custom was wanted and they were chatty...a shame really as the location and view are excellent, but won't return. I would add that the couple eating at the next table complained about the lasagne, and this I learned was taken from their bill....so this wouldn't seem to be a lone picky review. I don't mind paying for top quality food and service...this wasn't it.

Had been here once before and so was happy at the prospect if visiting again. Gloriously sunny day and so the stunning view over Runswick Bay was particularly good. Really just wanted a bar snack and so I had some sandwiches. The accompanying home-made crisps were nice and there was a tiny dollop of cole slaw, but a bit of lettuce and tomato wouldn't have gone amiss, especially given the price tag. What let it down - badly - was the fact that the bread was clearly at least a day old. Fine for my partner's toastie, but not for a 'fresh' and rather overpriced sandwich.

We first ate here about 9 or so years ago just around the time the new owners had taken over the Cliffemount. The food then was really good but it was obvious the focus was going to be on making it even better. 9 years later we again ate at the Cliffemount and were treated to a quality dining experience. the food was excellent and the stunning views across the bay make this a truly marvellous place to eat. We had the fish board which we shared as a starter , Delicious. For mains we had the scallop and king prawn kebab and the excellent monk fish with a creamy mushroom sauce with vegetables and a really interesting croquette of dill shrimp and potato. Fantastic. A small wine list offers some of the usual favourites plus a couple of interesting choices, we opted for the German Pino Gris.. rather nice ! service was friendly and informative and the meals were nicely timed. 10/10 Cliffemount.

Couldn't fault the quantity cost or quality. Ordered from the vegan menu chips curry sauce and pea fritter. Only problem was the food wasn't piping hot surprising since it was cooked to order in a deep fat fryer.
