Stayed here for a nearby wedding, thinking it was going to be a 4-star stay as advertised on Google. The woman working at the bar didn’t greet us, and there was no offer to help with our luggage and no info about our stay provided at all. Rooms are basic but the service was very unfriendly. There was no cleaning of the room during our two-night stay, and the woman working at the front didn’t offer us complimentary waters upon checking out (they didn’t replace anything in the room, and I had to pay for a water bottle) the breakfast was also not hot and very basic. Wouldn’t recommend, especially for £150/night.

We’ve just had a lovely stay at the Fox & Hounds. The staff couldn’t do enough for you and made us and our dog really welcome. The rooms were lovely and the pub is in a superb location. The pub menu was good with specialties served each day. We caught the train into Whitby from Danby. A really pleasant 40 minute journey at a reasonable price. Lots of walks in and around the village. A really beautiful spot! Will definitely visit again!

Spent one night here with dinner for our silver wedding anniversary. In a very idyllic village in the moors. Staff friendly, helpful and efficient and you feel valued as a resident. The steak pie was fabulous and very filling. Great place to stay, unwind and escape. Highly recommended.

We stayed for one night after a visit to Whitby, you expect to find a fault somewhere with most places, but I could not with the F&Hs. Situated in beautiful landscape, the beer garden is fully enclosed so we could let our dog enjoy the lack of lead, so we could relax and take in the spectacular view. The room has everything you need, shower, bath, full tea and coffee facilities, Netflix, Amazon on TV and comfortable beds. The staff are so welcoming and helpful, the breakfast hits all the rights spots and the black pudding is on another level. Can’t fault ans I did try. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Busy pub/hotel with a main bar and restaurant area (dogs allowed in the bar area and meals served here also). A good selection of ales (Landlord, Theakston’s Best and Wainwrights) and a sensible menu with plenty to choose from that’s local. Does a steak and ale pie count as a pie if there’s only a top crust of puff pastry? I’m inclined to say not, but it was very tasty and the meat was good quality and plentiful. A mushroom stroganoff was also very good, so overall - autumnal hearty meals in a cosy but busy bar, with an open fire… what’s not to like?

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stopped for two nights. We ate in the pub on both nights. We had a fantastic stay, this is a great, cosy, traditional pub in the beauty of Yorkshire. The room had everything you need, it wasn't the most modern room but no complaints. I like the little touches like a full-sized mug and the Decaff coffee bags. The first night the heating was on a little too much, it's on a thermostat and was a little warm but it wasn't too bad, as it was so cold outside. Some fellow guests we met one evening said their bed was rock hard, but, we had no complaints, my wife said it was a little lumpy on her side but I really didn't have any issues. The pub has plenty of parking around the back; where you can see they have some Glamping Pods. It is currently undergoing renovations in the room between the main bar and the dining area, which, had recently been painted and looked very nice. Allround, the pub was in a great location to be far enough out of Whitby but close enough, it only took 25mins to drive in. There is nothing around the pub, we walked to Danby the first evening but that hasn't not much in it either. However, it is perfect for walkers and those with dogs, we use it just as a base so we didn't mind and it was nice to be out in the countryside. We ate twice, both nights. Friday was busier in the pub, we did book but no need, as they had plenty of tables. We sat in the background for dinner and breakfast on both days. On the first night, I ordered off the specials board; to start I had the Bacon and Spring Onion Quiche which was lovely and for mains the venison casserole. My wife ordered the hummus bruschetta and steak and ale pie. On the second night, we just got main, both of us ordered off the specials board again, my wife got the sun-blushed tomato and brie past and I got a fantastic chicken rogan josh curry, served with a homemade popadom, naan and mango chutney, can't fault it. We really, really enjoyed the food.

We visited twice during our stay, observing some change in the (blackboard) menu as new items were added to replace those exhausted. On both occasions though a good range of options were available; steak pie, chicken balti, salmon stir-fry and much more. This is a spacious pub/restaurant allowing tables to be well separated without the need for plastic screens and the like. COVID guidelines seemed to be well-observed leading to a feeling of safety. In fact the whole place seemed to be well managed. There are also tables outside which maximise the value of the views across Esk Dale.

My wife and I were able to get a table without booking on a quiet Monday evening and both opted for the Whitby scampi and chips. The portions were generous, the food was cooked to perfection and was incredibly tasty! We were particularly impressed by the excellent homemade chips and the speed and politeness of service. We would definitely dine here again; highly recommended!

Went with wife and daughter on a beautiful September evening. Car park already full (6.05pm!) but was able to park opposite pub on a stretch of green ,part of which was used for a quoits game. Nice rustic interior with plenty of room in bar , useful as we had a dog. The food was pretty good too, we had mains of steak pies (substantial tasty and lean meat) washed down with some excellent Wainwright bitter. Friendly and pleasant bar staff and a convivial crowd of locals. Proper English country pub in a delightful rural village with some highly impressive views around.

Spent the May bank holiday at the Folk Festival in Botton Village. Glad we found this pub as the menu was interesting, food very well cooked and nicely presented. Generous portions, nothing to fault. Loved it.

On our second visit to the valley at Danby we had to return to this well run inn, this time for Sunday Lunch. A good priced choice of either Beef or Pork Roast, followed by proper Treacle Sponge with Custard, and a few local brews. Staggered back to our accommodation after for a sleep

Oh my - I usually struggle with eating a Sunday lunch out I always think I can make better myself but here was nearest the mark ever! Best I’ve had. Beef that was proper beef, home made gravy, mashed not puréed potatoes, roast potatoes that were crispy, al dente veg, light crispy fresh Yorkshire pudding. It was a busy sunny bank holiday and quality wasn’t compromised - we were there evening time too. Great views and beer garden. Gem of a find.

Friendly welcoming staff. Good beer and nice beer garden. Very peaceful to sit out in the sun and have a drink after a day out. Good selection of food which we will need to sample another time.

Dogs wandering around the bar area, snarling and growling at each other. Avoid Room 7, bathroom is damp and musty, no natural lighting, smelly carpet. Room is very small, wardrobe is damp. Food was nice. Staff not so nice, expect for young chap who served us dinner on the 2nd night. Staff more interested in chatting with locals and ignored the tourists. Had to ask for menus, just ignored us and eventually after 20 minutes or so I went to the bar and ordered our food.

This is a pleasant pub, with a separate restaurant section serving decent food. No complaints to make, except that my wife's pork fillet portion was pretty tiny; perhaps we wouldn't have noticed, but next to my large lamb portion it looked a bit comical! We ordered basically the same things the following evening in another local pub and the difference in portion size - for the same price - was huge. It has an open fire, which is excellent.

A nice pub just 2 miles from Danby in Ainthorpe. The service and atmosphere were great, and the food came quick and when it arrived it was superb. Would go again.

My wife and I and our son eat here one night, as we were staying in a nearby B&B.; A pleasant local atmosphere with an interesting interior. The food menu offered a good choice of meals; between us we ordered the fish cakes and pies, which were very good. There was also a fine selection of beers. The service was friendly. Overall, I would recommend this pub for a good meal in a friendly atmosphere.
