I don’t think I’ve ever been in a pub where I’ve felt so uncomfortable. The landlady is probably the rudest lady I’ve ever met. It’s truly unforgivable for her to shout at my daughters (my daughter is 9) therapy dog because she was barking (barking because I was out of sight, I’d gone to the toilet) . The ‘landlady’ then made offensive and hurtful comments about us to other customers, overheard by me as I left the toilet (not realising I was stood behind her). Even the locals call her the Rottweiler (enough said). This establishment is NOT child friendly, NOT dog friendly and MOST DEFINITELY NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY!!! They couldn’t have done less…! AVOID AT ALL COSTS….!!!!!!

As a holidaymaker from West Brom we popped in for drinks and was invited to join the pub quiz. As there was (only two of us). Pardon the pun our quiz name we joined in. We stayed in Whitby all week and went to this lovely friendly pub a few times. We were celebrating our 44th anniversary and my 67 birthday and had a great night with an amazing singer. Right up our street. The lovely lady of the house gifted us a lovely bottle of Prosecco which was greatly appreciated. The landlord keeps a great pint of John Smiths and was a really nice guy he even got what I was going to order b4 I ordered it which goes down well with any bloke. Keep up the great work you’re doing and can really recommend popping in if you’re visiting Whitby. P.S we didn’t win the quiz but thankfully didn’t come last lol. Visiting Whitby for the night with work friends! Yes, live singer on, but when you are informed that you are being too loud by the landlady, the landlord is beyond a joke. When they start to hover over you and try to make you feel unwelcome is totally un-needed. Absolutely horrid treatment by the fun police! We are fuming that we have been targeted for having a laugh and enjoying ourselves and not bothering anyone else. Perhaps they should have taken into account that the one member of our group is actually deaf and wears hearing aids. Why would they wait until we buy a round of drinks before asking us to leave. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! Fun Police Alert!

We visited here during a family night away to Whitby. It basically set the tone of the evening off in a negative way. As soon as we entered the man working I can assume is the landlord, made us feel uncomfortable and not welcome as we clearly aren’t the same “lovely locals” in their pub. We found his attitude to be uncomfortable and patronising towards us and our lovely small well behaved dogs which aren’t allowed to be in the pub after 8pm. (Who decides to make that ridiculous rule?!) We then had the pleasure of meeting his “lovely” who we can assume is his wife and landlord. They both decide to stand at the bar staring, pointing and talking about us behind the bar making us feel even more uncomfortable. Our tiny dog was not even on the seat he was on top of my puffer coat asleep before you even say he was on the sofa. I then proceeded to go and ask for another drink around 8:02pm and was greeted with “ITS TIME FOR YOU AND YOUR DOGS TO LEAVE NOW” wow- absolutely disgraceful and unwelcoming way to run a pub. We would never ever return and wouldn’t recommend this worn down pub to anyone wanting to have a relaxing pleasant evening, filled with the most unpleasant staff I’ve ever had the unfortunate experience to meet. Oh and also if you forget any of the PUB RULES whilst you are inside don’t worry- the signs with the rules are scattered absolutely everywhere around the pub for your viewing pleasure! We say next to a lovely couple who also agreed with us that this pub is ridiculous!!!

I can't understand some of the reviews on here. I think people should review things based on reality. This is not Starbucks, Costa or Greggs. It's not Pret, McDonalds or Burger King either. It's a facility within a charity aiming to bring alive an era before these massive organisations had taken over our society. Manned not by highly paid executives rolling out strategy to beat the competition but run on a shoestring by volunteers and a few paid employees who are providing memories for a public who remember station waiting rooms and buffet bars exactly like the Signals cafe. This NOT a commercial operation, it is part of the exhibit of the railway buffet bars of the 40'-60's when a certain Dr Beeching took an axe to the railways which provided links to towns an villages throughout the country. Review it in the context of it's situation. To the women who were on duty when my family of 5 adults and 2 children called, thanks for providing us with the food and drinks which I remember from mainline and local stations operating pre Beeching cuts. It let us pass an hour in the type of buffet which was commonplace in my young days. Also gave me an opportunity to educate my youngsters over the life I used to live in and brought much of what they had just experienced in the steam journey from Whitby. A thorough authentic experience in keeping with the North Yorkshire Railway objectives To other reviewers who were less than appreciative of the reconstruction of the rail experience pre 60's, I suggest you volunteer your time and skills to one of the thousands of charities in the U.K. who are doing their best to serve their local communities. It might just help you come to grips with life and appreciate the work others do to help their fellow human beings.

We were walking through Scarborough as part of our hike along the Cleveland Way and after walking past the Beach Huts in North, heading towards South Bay, we were on the lookout for somewhere to grab a quick meal. Everywhere seemed crazy busy, but luckily we found this place without a queue - possibly now I understand why no queue though as just wasn't great. My husband's small fish was huge! but he didn't enjoy so ate less than half. My battered sausage and chips was good/average quality, but the sausage was teeny! Still, we ate enough to fill our bellies so we could continue on our walk.

We had Sunday Evening meal at this venue and it was to say horrible. We had the Turkey roast where the turkey was from a turkey style loaf cut for sandwiches, and tasted like ? . The lumpy known by other names as gravy was shameful. The noise coming from the kitchen sounded like the male cook and staff where having a party ! Only a week prior we had the same meal at the Sword Dancer which is another Hungry Horse brand in Sheffield and the food was delicious and real turkey breast pieces. I am an advocate for Hungry Horse but the Byways at Crossgates Scarborough is harmful to the brand . From a seasoned world traveler.
