Had a lovely meal here while visiting Whitby. My friend is Gluten Free and the Quayside had an extensive choice for her which made a real difference to our outing. I opted for a small cod and chips which was a very good portion size for me. Very clean restaurant and you could see right into the kitchen area. Staff were lovely, efficient and friendly. 5 stars all round, we will be back soon.

A few days ago we went at lunch time for a takeaway to eat on the beach. Very expensive but considering how recommended Quayside was, and all the awards they've won, we thought it would be a treat. Unfortunately it was disappointing and one of us got food poisoning. When we unpacked the bag, one of the boxes was covered in oil, so much I had to put a towel on my lap to put it on. The fish was lovely, and amazing that they cater for gluten free, it's the only redeeming part of the lunch. The chips had absorbed a lot of that oil/grease so I ended up leaving a lot. My partner who isn't gluten intolerant had the regular batter. He had a battered sausage and chips and the batter on his sausage was soft and very greasy, to the point you could squish it, and as we found out a few hours later, it wasn't right as he's had food poisoning from it ever since. Overall would not recommend and didn't live up to the hype.

Pleasant restaurant in the harbour with good service. Seating available indoors & outdoors. Takeaway also available. I ordered scampi and chips, my friend had the cod and chips. Perfectly cooked seafood with a crispy batter. We ate outside and the seagulls didn't attack until we'd left the table and gone indoors to pay. I recommend sitting outside on a weekday when there isn't much traffic. You're just across the street from the river mouth leading to the sea. Fresh sea air makes your fish and chips even more delicious.

We ate here a few months ago and had a fab fish and chips! We both got a small fish and chips with a cup of tea. The food was tasty, arrived in good time and was just right for lunch. Not greasy at all. When we went they'd recently redecorated and everything was very fresh. Tables and seating were cosy and comfortable. Next time we go to Whitby we'll definitely eat here again. Plenty of room, and unlike some other places nearby, people aren't squished in like sardines.

What a great restaurant this is! First ever visit here but it certainly won't be the last. From the moment we entered it was perfect. The welcome was friendly and professional as was the service which was very efficient. The food was truly excellent and we enjoyed variously cod, scampi (proper battered, not breadcrumbed), chips and mushy peas. It was all perfectly cooked, really tasty and not at all greasy. We had ice cream to finish - lemon meringue and ferrero rocher - which was delicious. The restaurant itself is tastefully furnished and decorated and the toilets were immaculately clean. All in all, a very special place and all the staff should be proud to be delivering such a great experience.

Quaside is a chip shop and restaurant where you can enjoy delicious fresh fish and fries for a good price. I ordered the sea bass there this time and it was super fresh and the portion was double the amount of other surrounding restaurants. The service is very friendly and you are served at your beck and call to give an example. We asked for tartare and it was homemade and that was the tastiest I have ever tasted in England. In short, if you, as a Belgian or Dutch person, want to eat well, this is the right place, a little tip, come shortly before noon

The whole family had a lovely meal here, but for the two of us who are Gluten Free it was exceptional. Batrered GF fish options included haddock, cod, plaice, lemon sole and scampi, with the griddled salmon and sea bass also available. Even the children's menu had GF options. They have a local GF beer from Wold Top Brewery (none of that imported Peroni we usually have to live with), which was the icing on the cake. I definitely recommend booking in advance, we sat upstairs at a big window.

We ate here after my wife wanted to try the Lemon Sole (which they later didn't have, after ordering it). We are a family of 4 (4yo and 6yo). Our children had kids meals and we both had fish and chips. The bill came to £62...yes - £62 for fish and chips for a small family (just a pot of tea and glass of water for drinks). The fish was soggy on the bottom and insufficiently drained. The quality was middle-of-the-road. Putting 2lb of chips on a plate doesn't make up for the high price tag. We didn't leave hungry, but were incredibly disappointed by the price, especially nearly £10 for kids meals. We knew it was expensive from the menu - but we didn't receive quality to the price point. This simple price gouging is not on, especially for kids meals. We wish we'd gone elsewhere and this is a shame as the restaurant is lovely inside.

The Good The fish and chips. Let's not overcomplicate things. You want a good representation of proper Whitby fish and chips and you'll find it here. Local people all have their favourites and end up being loyal to one, but there are a clutch of top-tier fish and chips in the town, and Quayside is one of them. If you see a long line at Magpie just forget it, they won't offer anything that Quayside can't also provide. The location is stunning, with views across to the Abbey. The Bad "Bad" isn't right, Quayside is a good choice. We dined in. Service was ok, if a little impersonal, and it took a long time to get the bill. But this is a tourist hotspot with lots of covers, so we can cut them some slack, and we're not expecting fine-dining levels of service when ordering fish and chips. Top Tip If you desire no skin on the fish, then order the cod. The haddock is skin-on, but (to me) the better choice.

Can't comment on the food or atmosphere unfortunately as we made a booking on their website a month prior to visiting, only to be told over the phone the day before our booking that they aren't even open at that time! You might say I should have double checked the opening times but their website allowed me to make the booking and still does let you book outside of opening hours. I had assumed that if a time was available to book then the restaurant would be open. The person who called didn't seem apologetic or even surprised. We had lunch today at the Quayside. This was not the first plate of fish & chips we had while in Whitby for our long weekend, but they were the best by a country mile. I won't say where the others were from, but they were from somewhere that has had a lot more publicity than the Quayside in recent years, and were a pale imitation of the real thing. It has never failed to impress me how the staff of the Quayside manage to run such a big restaurant and still maintain such a high standard: properly browned, crisp batter, first rate fish, mushy peas just how they should be, real tartare sauce. Could the chips have been left in another minute? Well yes, for me, but that's just a question of taste. Friendly, helpful, efficient staff, and a smart, comfortable space to eat in. There are a lot of fish & chip shops in Whitby, a lot to choose from. I'd choose the Quayside any time.

We got one pot of tea, one tea bag, and one pot of water. For £5.80. There's nothing to rave about. We didn't have to queue outside like 'The Other' place just next door. We had the small fish and chips, which was a sufficient size, not pant bursting and needing a lie down after eating a whale size.

Such a shame to see the decline in quality with this place, I’ve been going to Quayside since I was a child and now as a 30 year old I think I’ll have to look elsewhere on my trips to Whitby. The portion sizes are ridiculously small, ordered a “bowl of chips” expecting an actual bowl (cereal or pasta size) but instead received a little ramekin with a few chips stuffed in it and most were very scrappy. The gravy I also ordered was in a similar size ramekin to the chips! There’s no small or large options with chips either so in order to receive more you would have to order two ramekins of them and they’re not cheap either at £3.90 per bowl! For a single slice of bread and butter it’s 90p. Everything is an added extra, no special deal of Fish, Chips, Peas, Bread & Butter and Tea like you see in most establishments. The interior is lovely and good service but really let down with everything else.

But the outside area is accessed only from inside and fenced off from the pavement so there is not that worry of passers by treading on a tail, or our dog wanting to greet every other that walked past, so was relaxing as well as delicious. I cannot wait for Whitby Council to open tommorrow! let us see if it wipes the smug grin of the child's face (I say child as he acted like one) and let us see if he regrets telling me along with the guy he sent over to me for sitting on a seat that no one had used nor was using all the time I had been in there, the only reason I sat on it is I have a foot disability and a rest for 2 minutes makes all the difference and he obviously didn't have the balls to approach me himself and the manager whom he verbally dragged into it without him even being there to defend himself, advising me that the manager like himself wouldnt care if I complained to him when I requested to speak with the manager! I was told the manager would laugh and swear and tell me "so what" at me just for raising a complaint! These three people should not be customer facing especially in a family place... They would be best in McDonald's kitchen... Whitby council needs to be made aware of a manager having this apparantly attitude if you request them, and the two floor staff and their appalling approach to the slightest complaint and how they tell you to just "oy you move" those words exactly! No approaching me with, "excuse me madame do you mind moving if you are not playing the game"...no he shouted at me from a distance, Doesn't cost anything! I am 50 years old and he spoke to me how you would tell a cheeky 10 year old to move whom wasn't listening!! Customer service skills, well there was none what so ever...
