Yes, it is a posh chip shop, but £73 for 3 x battered sausage n chips with onion rings and coffee's at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon wasn’t an absolute joke we all had the worst stomach aches for 2 days, bloated with oil and me being a proud Mancunian loving my chips it turned out we was ripped off and fed a load of mediocre food, we love Whitby but never had an experience like this, one we will definitely be avoiding in our regular visits to the gorgeous Whitby

Booked the Quayside Saturday night for Whitby fish and chips. Originally wanted upstairs window table ,however on arrival opted for downstairs as upper level resembled Stringfellows night club. The food and service were very good, however we sat at the bottom of the restaurant..adjacent to the kitchen hence all the shouting and balling from the kitchen staff could be heard clearly throughout dinner. However we would definitely return and recommend but chose your table AWAY from the glass partition of kitchen.

Me and two friends called for fish and chips, (takeaway) we waited ages for food, the food was Terrible, with a capital T", I had fish and chips and so did one of my other friends, we've both feel ropey, most of mine feed the sea gulls, I do hope they are OK, been sat on loo all morning, it had to be the fish as its the only thing I've eaten.other friend had chips and battered sausage, miraculously he's OK. Rush, rush rush rush, wish I'd taken mine back for a refund, definitely won't use your establishment any time soon if ever, Joe motorcycle rider from Sheffield

Reviewing the gelato only as we all know the fish and chips are fantastic, as a local back home visiting my parents of course we go to fuscos only for our chippy teas. But in terms of the gelato having travelled from the bottom to the top of Italy enjoying over 70 different artisanal Gelaterias the gelato here is simply wonderful and the best you will find in the UK. I believe they were taught techniques in Sicily the home of gelato. Don’t bother with any other ice cream place in Whitby, get the gelato from here for sure and you won’t regret it.

Tonight, I brought my family of 5 to try a fish and chip restaurant for the first time. The food was okay, but the service was not good. Firstly, I asked for a straw for my children's drinks, but they never gave me them, and I had to go to the bar myself. Secondly, I ordered 2 pieces of white bread, but I thought they would be toasted, which they weren't, so I returned them to the counter. The waitress told me that the bread is never toasted in a fish and chip restaurant with a very bad attitude, even thought it was my first time trying a fish and chip restaurant, and I wasn't aware. The waitress never mentioned this to me when I ordered. Her attitude to me was very poor, which might have been because we didn't tip the 5% suggested on the bill.

A few days ago we went at lunch time for a takeaway to eat on the beach. Very expensive but considering how recommended Quayside was, and all the awards they've won, we thought it would be a treat. Unfortunately it was disappointing and one of us got food poisoning. When we unpacked the bag, one of the boxes was covered in oil, so much I had to put a towel on my lap to put it on. The fish was lovely, and amazing that they cater for gluten free, it's the only redeeming part of the lunch. The chips had absorbed a lot of that oil/grease so I ended up leaving a lot. My partner who isn't gluten intolerant had the regular batter. He had a battered sausage and chips and the batter on his sausage was soft and very greasy, to the point you could squish it, and as we found out a few hours later, it wasn't right as he's had food poisoning from it ever since. Overall would not recommend and didn't live up to the hype.

Pleasant restaurant in the harbour with good service. Seating available indoors & outdoors. Takeaway also available. I ordered scampi and chips, my friend had the cod and chips. Perfectly cooked seafood with a crispy batter. We ate outside and the seagulls didn't attack until we'd left the table and gone indoors to pay. I recommend sitting outside on a weekday when there isn't much traffic. You're just across the street from the river mouth leading to the sea. Fresh sea air makes your fish and chips even more delicious.

The welcome was friendly and professional as was the service which was very efficient. The food was truly excellent and we enjoyed variously cod, scampi (proper battered, not breadcrumbed), chips and mushy peas. It was all perfectly cooked, really tasty and not at all greasy. We had ice cream to finish - lemon meringue and ferrero rocher - which was delicious. The restaurant itself is tastefully furnished and decorated and the toilets were immaculately clean. Quaside is a chip shop and restaurant where you can enjoy delicious fresh fish and fries for a good price. I ordered the sea bass there this time and it was super fresh and the portion was double the amount of other surrounding restaurants. The service is very friendly and you are served at your beck and call to give an example. We asked for tartare and it was homemade and that was the tastiest I have ever tasted in England. Batrered GF fish options included haddock, cod, plaice, lemon sole and scampi, with the griddled salmon and sea bass also available. Even the children's menu had GF options. We ate here after my wife wanted to try the Lemon Sole (which they later didn't have, after ordering it). We are a family of 4 (4yo and 6yo). Our children had kids meals and we both had fish and chips. The bill came to £62...yes - £62 for fish and chips for a small family (just a pot of tea and glass of water for drinks). The fish was soggy on the bottom and insufficiently drained. The quality was middle-of-the-road. Putting 2lb of chips on a plate doesn't make up for the high price tag. We didn't leave hungry, but were incredibly disappointed by the price, especially nearly £10 for kids meals. We knew it was expensive from the menu - but we didn't receive quality to the price point. This simple price gouging is not on, especially for kids meals. We wish we'd gone elsewhere and this is a shame as the restaurant is lovely inside.

The Good The fish and chips. Let's not overcomplicate things. You want a good representation of proper Whitby fish and chips and you'll find it here. Local people all have their favourites and end up being loyal to one, but there are a clutch of top-tier fish and chips in the town, and Quayside is one of them. If you see a long line at Magpie just forget it, they won't offer anything that Quayside can't also provide. The location is stunning, with views across to the Abbey. The Bad "Bad" isn't right, Quayside is a good choice. We dined in. Service was ok, if a little impersonal, and it took a long time to get the bill. But this is a tourist hotspot with lots of covers, so we can cut them some slack, and we're not expecting fine-dining levels of service when ordering fish and chips. Top Tip If you desire no skin on the fish, then order the cod. The haddock is skin-on, but (to me) the better choice.

Can't comment on the food or atmosphere unfortunately as we made a booking on their website a month prior to visiting, only to be told over the phone the day before our booking that they aren't even open at that time! You might say I should have double checked the opening times but their website allowed me to make the booking and still does let you book outside of opening hours. Food was ok. Price was a little steep. Service was nothing to write home about. BUT what was really annoying, after paying by card and leaving, was being chased down on a busy pavement by a member of staff saying the payment didn't go through - tried again and again, then another card and the another card with the staff member carrying the payment machine saying all declined when none of them should have failed ! Because golden grid has been established for such a long time you'd have thought they would have sorted this problem out but apparently not ! it's not like it would cost them much to get better devices with better reception but no they can't be bothered. SO be prepared to be chased down and embarrassed.
