Nice, spacious, quiet. Nice food. Plenty of doombar. Plenty of history. Art. Information of former use if building is scattered about.

Took the Mrs n 2 kids here twice in a month..For food.and.quality family time.. and on both occasions: instead of good food n smiles.. We were served some food cold (meant to be hot) some undercooked almost raw chicken..2 different children's meals burnt black ..and then was the 3rd meal for my 8 year old daughter that we were served pink fleshy chicken..and when I complained for the 3 rd time . I was told I know it looks raw but its not.. I asked for a manager explained that a week prior 3 of the 4 meals were cold and when I asked for fresh meals 1 came out 15 min later..thats 30 min after we had ordered and 15 min after we had been given 1 edible meal..and then after another 20 min I told them the evening had been ruined and it was too late now..I was given a partial refund for 3 meals..no discounted drinks or offer of a desert for the kids for instance for all the waiting..and I expressed my absaloute disbelief and discontent and the attitude in regards to the clearly uncooked food.. Now u may think an organisation of this size would now be jumping through hoops in order to try n make sure as a family we left even 1 percent happier.. well think again.. with an attitude of sheer rudeness and only after I had to ask for some kind of compensation apology whatever u may wanna call it.. I was givennthe refund of just 1 of the children's meals..(the I know it looks raw sir but it's not raw chicken).. To say I'm bitterly disappointed is an understatement.. I feel not only on both occasions should we have been offered a full refund drinks included..(4 soft drinks)..but after the second I believe some kind of ..SIR HERES MY NAME ..PLEASE CONTACT ME THE NEXT TIME U N YA FAMILY WANNA EAT OUT AND WE WOULD LOVE TO GET THE CHANCE TO MAKE IT UP TO U ALL..DRINKS FOOD DESERTS FOR THE 4 OF U COMPLETELY ON THE HOUSE ..AND HERES MY PERSONAL GUARANTEE THAT EVERYTHING WILL BE PERFECT.. WE DIDNT EVEN HAVE SOMEONE COME OVER TO THE TABLE AND SAY SORRY..I HAD TO REPEATEDLY GO UP TO THE COUNTER TO GET ANY KIND OF HELP.. We will NEVER EVER EAT AT ANOTHER WEATHERSPOONS ESTABLISHMENT

It's massive! And yet busy. Nothing remarkable about it... It's just cheap. Lots of small groups, seems to be little to no intermingling

Great place on a Saturday night, especially if it's warm weather, though get there early as it does get very busy. Good food.

Difficult to use the allergy machine and had to ask several staff to assist. Once sorted food was good, just a pain and took ages to get ordered.

The outside seating is nice but limited and shady in the afternoon. Inside is deliberately old-fashioned and dark yet doesn't feel cosy. It could do with some armchairs or sofas to make it more comfortable. Food is pretty standard for Wetherspoons.

The first Wetherspoons I've encountered without any straws for customers, which is a basic expectation of any pub and they also offered no apologies for this. Clearly run on a skeleton staff, with the counter virtually unmanned for long periods. They also did not have the desired menu items. Rubbish strewn about the floor.

Grate place, very nicely decorated, with good food and excellent staff.

The asset of this Spoons is that its good outside seating area in the pedestrianised road. Sunshine outside at the tables is good morning to early afternoon (April). Again, it is good to note the vegan food options although this is not the case for sweets/ puddings, sadly.

I had a really good time here, all of my orders, both food and drink, were served very quickly. The bar staff were also very nice. The reason why it is only a 4-star experience; the black pudding. Horrible. It looks like a child's first attempt at drawing black pudding, has the texture of the rough side of a sponge, and tastes about as good as it looks and feels. JD Wearherspoons, please learn to cook black pudding, it is a delicacy...

Edit: Unfortunately, I have to completely change this review after tonight's experience. A fierce Wetherspoons lover here, that's not gonna change, but - tonight's experience at the Lord Palmerston in Southsea was truly atrocious. Firstly, the cheese melt gourmet burger war available on the app, but my hubby wanted to pay with a card he hadn't saved in his phone so he went to the bar only to be told that burger was out. He came back to the table and asked what I wanted instead, so I said I'll just have the American cheeseburger (which is advertised as 2x 3 oz patties, gherkins, onions etc), a side salad and an extra order of chips with the spicy seasoning. What we got was: a plain single patty cheeseburger with absolutely no toppings whatsoever, a bowl of half-raw chips with no seasoning ("oh yeah they don't do that anymore either"), and the side salad had EXACTLY 3 cucumber slices, 1 center tomato slice and 5 salad leaves in it. I asked to speak to the manager of course, a tall bald guy came to the table "What's up?", I told him everything that was going on and stated that it was a catastrophe, he said "sorry about that" and went on his way. Shocking and so NOT what we're used to from Wetherspoons in general and this pub in particular. Initial review: Very nice Wetherspoons, might come here more often if moving to the area!

Good for gathering with friend or family. A spacious free house. The food quality is fair (seems little lower than high street pubs. But the free house seems to paying the tribute to Lord Nelson. They launch a tasting festival if ale, nice to explore.

Genuinely some of the worst service I've ever received in a spoons. You don't walk in expecting much, just good food and drinks and mediocre service but even then they managed to limbo under the pole of mediocrity. The man who served us gave us an earful about other patrons making mistakes on the app, and how it was annoying for him when people make mistakes. People are human, let them make mistakes, it's not brain surgery, it's not worth the stress. Anyway moral of the story, food is great, drinks are fine, staff could use some time off.

Always enjoy a breakfast at this chain. Clean and tidy. Very well priced, and you always know what you are going to get. Staff at this particular venue were very polite and generally helpful. Tables were clean and food was warm.

Love the Lord Palmy, nice friendly bar staff (Cloe),my meal (Eggs Benedict, A first for me) was very nice & not too many people there so it wasn't too noisy, I've been to this particular Spoons quite often over the years as it's the nearest one toe & it never disappoints.

We had curry which was good but had planned to have mixed grill as Tuesday steak day. Apparently not anymore. No steak day and they no longer serve steak, gammon steak or mixed grill. Saw several people walk out without eating because of this. We go regularly but will be looking for somewhere else in future. Real let down. Also nowhere near enough staff actually working. Five behind bar chatting while food going cold waiting to be served. I spoke to one member of staff when I asked about steak and although polite kept calling me love and lovey. Very patronising,I may be over 60 but please don't talk down to me like that.

Great staff good value for money

The definition of madness is repeating things expecting a different way. Palm is typical Spoons. Cheap booze but questionable customer service. God help.you of repeat offender. Female staff when bringing orders are politiest. Male members rarely, the order gets slammed down.Engaging is a waste of time and breath. ie you say thank you and they say nothing and bugger off. Manners are free and it makes a difference. But there we go.

A massive and quite grand looking pub from the outside which is only reinforced once you enter although it does seem to shrink a bit once you're inside. Even so, it is a wide and deep pub with the bar on the right as you enter with loads of seating everywhere. This particular building was destroyed in the war and had been W&H Stevenson’s long-standing ‘costumers, mantle makers and milliners’. The staff were very pleasant as usual and a few of the local characters were out to play as well, so made for an even more interesting visit. The fish and chips were excellent as was the Guinness.

One of the better J D Wetherspoon Pubs in Portsmouth. A decent atmosphere and pub was packed. Went in mid afternoon so we were able to get a table. The Wetherspoon Spoon App was actually working on this occasion for ordering food and drink to our table. The App was extremely slow but service was very quick!! Food was ok but could have been a bit warmer. Will visit again in future as used pub many times.

Worst brekky so far, usually decent standard, not great this time

Have been to other spoons for breakfast and normally they good. When placed our order the person taking our order kept trying to get us to order something different as couldn't find what we wanted on the till. It all seemed like too much effort to be there!! The food arrived quickly but wasn't great as could tell it had been under a heat lamp for ages and some of the pancakes were hard. Lots of dirty tables full of plates and left over food.

Food used to be really good here. When ordering the mixed grill I asked if I could have my steak cooked a certain way and the staff informed me that I couldn't as it all gets cooked as one together. He wasn't wrong. I know people will say what would you expect from a weatherspoons, well we expect to be able to tell which is which on the plate. Other spoons I have eaten in recently has been a lot better

Really good pub. Lots of space. Staff excellent. The toilets smell like a sweaty bollocks is my only negative. I always come here, it is overall one of the good spoons.

Typical wetherspoons, good choice of food which appears to be discontinued in other spoons, appeared to be popular with students only down side to me was the air conditioning, it was freezing

Fantastic breakfast, cheap and very quick service. Friendly staff for the time of day, 9am, very large floorspace and was filling well when we left.

I set in here whilst I was waiting for the ferry. The food wasn't the best even by wetherspoons standards but the service was friendly,atmosphere was as expected quiet but enough back ground noise for it to feel comfortable. I'd come back again if I was waiting for the ferry again.

Typical JD pub. Range of beers good & well kept based on our choices. Went for breakfast & apart from the toast, which was a bit rare, you just can't beat the value they offer.

Cheap and easy. Plenty of room for an office party for a good 200-250 people I would guess. Also good for a cheep dinner with the family after something like a football match. Staff are friendly, but the prices are even friendlier.

This pub used to be very comfortable but it's now so cold that I can't tolerate it unless I have a coat on (and eating wearing a coat is not very practical). Overheard from an adjacent table: "Shall we have another drink? No, it's too cold in here lets go elsewhere. Which they did. Please get the HVAC adjusted properly.

Even when coping with the crowds from Victorious the food arrived quickly and everyone was friendly and helpful.

A Wetherspoon’s where the toilets aren’t up 300 steps! It was opening day of Victorious Festival so the pub was very busy. Food and drink service was still fast and the staff were very happy. Great atmosphere all day.

🛑 2 reviews 🛑 On the 8th of August 2024, me and a good friend, (who i hadn't seen for a year, because of a serious illness, he had been recovering from. We both attended this weatherspoons pub, for something to eat & a drink & a catch up in this weatherspoons pub in Southsea I wrote a review below, a year or so ago & i then gave this weatherspoons a 4 star then 🌟 On Thursday 8th of August 2024. Me & my friend ordered a meal with a drink.. The meal cost a little over £23 for the both of us, the over tattooed rude young girl, who survived us was in a rush to take our money, while ordering the staff loudly in front of us, her mannerisms & very poor attitude and attention to detail, was very unpleasant and unprofessional to say the least, we ordered "Fish & chips" that took about 25 minutes to turn up. When first seeing the size of the portions of food i was initially shocked to see two "child size portions" of micro fish and chips 🍟. The Garden pees were "Hard like Bullets" & cold, the Chips 🍟 were about 20 chips that were partly cold & the fish was just warm, small & quite tasteless, also unfortunately i found a "Human Grey Hair" in or on my battered fish, the "Tattooed girl, who we had seen & who had taken our order in the first place, at the bar, turned up at out table & i had spoken to her about the situation, to say how upset i was with food & the poor service, i asked why did she give us child portions, (especially as we are adults) "she said that is the correct size, of portions, i said i feel that a extra free portion of chips 🍟 should be given to us as the food is cold & really the size of a oap or child 🧒 portion. Anyway the girl Who served us & was asking if the food was ok, said their was nothing she could do for us both. As she walked off laughing.. After leaving the table, she proceeded to walk over to some young guy who fondolded her in front of a packed restaurant, with children in the pub restaurant and families & kissing her, then they proceeded to get her coat & leave the weatherspoons. A while latter, after me and my friend had drunk our drinks and eat the cold, tastless food we had purchased. I went to the bar to order 2 drinks & spoke to another lady, who said i should not be complaining about her staff member, unfortunately this girl was also tattooed up to the point i couldnt make out if she was speaking to me or the till. Pictures of famous people, such as Peter Sellers, who was born on the corner of castle Road, (above the Chinese takeaway..) less than 10 minutes walk... The pub, is well worth a visit.. It has Free cloud WiFi access, multi refill hot drinks, The only draw back is the toilets, mens are quite smelly, the Gents cubicles really need looking after better & sometimes the smell of toilets not being flushed, came make a person really feel sick, (so be careful, to breath through your slight open mouth.. Other than that it could do with toilet Brushes and a air fresheners... Through out.... Hope both reviews help

I've no problem with Wetherspoons. Used them all over the Country and consistently good food and excellent value. The Lord Palmerston was extremely disappointing. Food was luke warm at best. Very slow, indifferent service at the bar. I often use the App but the signal was awful in here. Nice friendly waitress was the only good part of the experience. Otherwise it was very poor and I wouldn't go there again.

It's a wetherspoons you know what to expect

Worse Wetherspoons I have ever visited….food was cold and sent back and the second lot was no better! Got the impression that the staff were not bothered! Toilets were a disgrace and the place was filthy…sorry Wetherspoons but this place lets the Company down!!

The Falkland Vets, and a bunch of widowers are being bullied by a member of staff at the Lord Palmerston. Several members of public have complained and stepped in to stop this happening but the pub manager bans them or does not listen to their complaints. The bully culture to the vulnerable at the Lord Palmy is sickening. Please do not support these vile members of staff and protect our veterans and vulnerable.

What an experience! For a fat lazy dog like me just to be able to sit at the table and order something and the waiter delivers it to the table. Well! It could make me feel like being part of our royal family. In sober reality, I give my huge thanks to pub, the very good service, the beautiful decor and ambiance. Thank you.

Everything as you may expect from a Wetherspoons. Our party of 7 after meals and a few rounds were told to leave because a 70 year old who was with us dozed off... manager said it didn't look good.
