As a very "Senior Citizen" who has lived Locally for many years I am a regular visitor to Marshfield with friends where - fortunately in these difficult times - there are still two excellent Pubs. However since the fairly recent arrival of new Landlords/'Publicans - Pete and Jayne Olsen - very well known in the area - The Lord Nelson has become even more welcoming and to a much wider age range of ages of customers. They offer a wide choice of really excellent food - particularly their Sunday Roasts - as well as their Fish and "Pub Grub". There is also always a choice of about 20 Home Cooked Stone Baked Pizza's. whether to eat "in house" or as Take Aways . I do suggest Booking and to check on times.

Visited for a Sunday lunch to celebrate family birthday. Limited choice of only chicken or beef. Beef arrived cold, chicken sparse and appeared to be fillets sliced up into thin pieces. Not what one would expect to be served! Overall very poorly presented and executed. Also demonstrated by lack of customers, empty tables and cold atmosphere. A great shame as this pub could be so much better…….. with a bit more passion and investment! This pub would attract returning visitors. Will certainly not be returning. Advise to avoid for Sunday lunch!!!

We visited on Sunday the 3rd of Oct 2021 for a family lunch and sat down at 2:15. We were nicely welcomed by we presume the Landlord & Land Lady & made to feel most welcome. There appeared to be some breakdown in comms between the kitchen & front of house as we ordered 2 beef lunches & one lamb only to be told 5-10 mins later that there was no longer any beef. There was a reasonable wait for food and it turned up and looked and tasted lovely, however after reading several reviews we were left disappointed with only one small dish of vegetables between 3 of us, I had to go and ask for some more vegetables. Then the comms issue reared up again they brought out two correct desserts and one wrong again. It was taken away to be replaced only to be told that they had run out of that particular dessert.

We visited today for Sunday lunch...just 4 of us. We ate in the bar area which was fine. However it was so cold in there and my elderly parents were freezing. Unusually cold for May but could have done with some heating. There was only one vegetarian choice. The lunches were not hot, the plates were cold, the vegetables were uncooked and overall quite tasteless. Very disappointed as my parents have been there before and enjoyed their previous meals

We only had sandwiches but they were excellent and we decided to book a table for the evening when our son would be with us. We could have taken the dogs in the evening but decided to leave them at the cottage where we were staying but there were others there. Our visit started badly, the Landlord was on duty. I’m not sure what he knows about running a pub but he doesn’t know his beer and he has no customer service skills.,He tried to pass off a pint of beer that had white deposits the size of hailstones swirling around. I suggested he changed it which he did begrudgingly. The second attempt smelt of vinegar and tasted worse - I suggested it was off and he said rudely well choose another one then! The second pint was ok. I asked him to taste/smell the offending beer and he said hmm it’s a bit off!! He then theft the bar and left the entire front of house operation to a nice female member of staff who had to take and deliver orders, pour and table serve drinks, serve at the bar and do the bills. For around 18 covers!! Our food was passable although scampi and chips escaped from a basket at around £11 was poor. Go elsewhere, the landlord doesn’t deserve your trade!

Went to the Lord Nelson last night with my husband and a friend. The food was very high quality, beautifully presented and excellent value for money. Two of us had the chicken breast with pesto dressing and pomme Anna potatoes followed by chocolate fondant. Our friend had the handmade burger and creme brûlée. It was so much better than the average pub food and more the type of food you would expect at an expensive restaurant in Bath. This is our second visit and we will be going again. I would highly recommend it.

The place was packed, the atmosphere was warm and friendly. The limited menu was fine. I had baby squid and steak. So often a steak ordered rare comes out medium, but not here. And the meat was good. Service was patchy, a young crowd, but their enthusiasm and clear keenness to help made it work fine. The four star rating comes from the wine: a Cotes du Rhone which was so much better than the £26 price tag.

We had a party to celebrate 80th and 70 birthdays. The buffet was very good catering for vegetarians and a child with nut and lactose allergies (this was after a consultation with the chef) The room was very warm and decorated with candles and wall hangings. Staff all very helpful and friendly. We had an overflow room to put coats and where the 19 children gathered. Marshfield is a great place to have such a party as there is plenty of B&B;, AirB&B; and pub accommodation in the village so people can walk back after the event. Many thanks to Alistair and his team!

Ok, so I come here frequently. It's local when I am in Marshfield. But I do travel extensively and my reviews are as fair as I can make them. The food here is close to gastro quality without the pretence. I read that some people complained about the age of the building and the heat, these are fair comments but, for me, that's part of the charm of a 16th century venue. It's so unlike other pubs in retaining it's character. And it has no inane music.

We booked a table. Arrived at 1.15pm as booked.. By 1.45, no one had asked us what we wanted to drink or eat. My daughter then went to the bar and ordered 3 cokes and a wine.. By 1.55pm, the drinks still had not come. We walked out disgusted. There's a nice young black man who was clearly run of his feet and working hard. A young redhead who didn't seem to give a crap and was outside smoking. Her attitude was awful. I've had excellent food here many times before, but the service today was absolutely appalling. The family sitting near us were also very unhappy with the service. They arrived before us and waited over 40 minutes for their food order. They came to us before them. We chased up the drinks twice, but they still didn't arrive. How hard can it be to pour 3 cokes and a glass of wine? Not a way to run a pub. We had a lovely meal elsewhere and won't be back.

I visited with a small group of friends, we opted to eat in the bar as we had a dog. I always prefer to sit in the bar area. The pub was inviting, informal, with young and old making the most of a drizzly afternoon. I opted for the lamb. Fantastic, in fact best Sunday lunch in a while. Accompanied by fluffy roast pots and at least 5 other veg either served on the plate or a side bowl. The mint jus was really fresh and there was plenty of gravy. A friend had the pork and was equally impressed. The puddings looked amazing but on this occasion the lemon tart had run out. Tea and coffee served as they come, no nonsense enough for a couple of cups each with a little sweet treat. The staff were really welcoming, looking forward to an excuse to go back mid week as the menu looks really exciting using fresh ingredients.

Following an online recommendation my brother in law and his wife suggested we met up at this pub for an evening meal as we were in the area. The pub has a homely feel i and retains the traditional feel of a small village pub with a good range of beer on tap. However, this pub is not about traditional pub grub and the menu choices suggested we might be in for a treat. We weren't disappointed. Two of our party opted for starters one choosing, duck and the other a terrine. I chose pressed pork belly with crispy cheek as my main, whilst others in the group ordered corn fed chicken and risotto. When the starters arrived they were very nicely presented and looked very appetising and the empty plates a couple of minutes confirmed the quality of the food on offer. Unfortunately after clearing the plates we were informed that there was no risotto so a tortellini dish was ordered instead. The mains were again well presented and everyone commented that their chosen dishes were well cooked and flavoursome. Again empty plates all round. Three of our party decided they had room for a dessert and again these did not disappoint. The food was sensibly priced and as an added bonus for those that had pudding, as we visited on a Monday night they were free! A really enjoyable meal in a cosy pub. I will definitely put this one on my list for a revisit if we are in the area again.

My date suggested this place as one of her favourites for good pub grub, a chilled ambience and a warm welcome. It was a Thursday evening. The village of Marshfield is lovely, peaceful and pretty. The pub sits in the heart of it. Very inconspicuous from the outside but when you walk in its full of rustic charm, friendly staff and a local community ambience. Dogs are welcome and they even have a jar of treats for them.I had a nice glass of house Sauvignon Blanc which was nice, chilled and easy going. For dinner, it was burger night. The fries were nothing to write home about but the burger was fab. Cooked to perfection, simply served, hot and tasty .Outside there is s cute courtyard and pleasant beer garden. Parking on the street outside can be tricky. You might need a short walk but it's worth it.There is nothing flash about this place, but if you are looking for a nicely furnished, warm and friendly place for tasty but simple pub grub and a well served drink, it's great. It's easy driving to the north of Bath and to the west of Chippenham.Definitely go again.

The Lord Nelson Inn was booked by a family member, for an Aunt's birthday. Our host and hostess were very accomodating, the food was good. There was a varied menu, that included set pieces as well as a specials board of seasonal dishes. The birthday girl had a very particular requirement for her own meal, which was not on the menu, but was not a problem for chef to create as a special order whilst serving the rest of the party from the two menus available for the evening. Service was prompt, friendly and overall the meal and drinks were well priced. There was a good range of wines and spirits and is the current fashion a menu of Vodka, Gin and Whisky. My only complaint, being a cognac drinker there was only one Brandy on offer. Couvoisier. Not my first choice but as the only complaint from a good evening a place to easily recommend to others. The bar has a great feel and the locals are very welcoming and you swiftly find yourself engaged in conversation. A proper pub, with proper food and no television required to make for an entertaining night out.

As a Marshfield resident the Nelson is my 'local', I went with some friends for the Sunday carvery I hadn't been for quite sometime but not a good experience, the portions of cabbage were just ridiculous , it looked like a 1/4 of a cabbage and not properly cooked as was the broccoli.Every carvery that I've been to the meat is placed on the plate first and the vegetables on top but not this time, the meat was put on the top and it was all cold.I don't know if it was my imagination but the plates seemed to be much smaller? It was discreetly mentioned to the co-owner but nothing was done.Very disappointed!

An excellent, posh and cosy pub with great food and lovely and approachable staff. The Sunday carvery is a great price but is excellent and perfectly cooked meats and vegetables. The desserts are lovely and refreshing, also full of flavour. I would recommend this pub to everyone. Outstanding and quick service.

Some of the best pub food I've had in the UK - freshly cooked + great menu options + this is coming from someone who frequents English pubs often and has had many a pub grub!

Lovely pub in a picturesque village. Came for a Sunday carvery and couldn't fault it, all well cooked. Choice of lamb, beef or pork. You could then help yourselves to the veg - roast potatoes, cauliflower, red cabbage, sprouts, carrots, swede and yorkshires. Pot of crackling, gravy and range of condiments. You could also return for seconds of any of the veg....we chose to leave room for the sticky toffee pudding which was also delicious. Good service and characterful pub, with wood burning stove. 10 mins from Bath junction of M4. Most definitely recommend, at £9.95 per carvery, great value for money too (kid friendly with children options too).

I would just like to congratulate you on the excellent lunch you served us when we gave my brother a "Xmas" lunch on Wednesday , Not only was the Confit of Duck quite exceptionally delicious but it is rare these days to find such a high standard of food in an Inn which still has the feel of a comfortable country pub with a friendly welcome from both you as hosts and your regular customers .And our Labrador was also impressed by your welcome . Thank you .

We were staying in Marshfield for the Bath Christmas markets and had our first evenings meal at the Lord Nelson. Welcoming with a fire and some nice decor. The food was lovely. I had the porkbelly and my wife had chicken (great broccoli and blue cheese soup to start for both of us). Only slight comment (amusing actually but others could have been annoyed) was a very young and inexperienced waiter who got quite a few things wrong but he was a nice lad and we were away for a leisurely weekend so not a biggy.

We have visited the Lord Nelson many times when visiting family locally. We have enjoyed staying B & B, having a casual drink, lunch or supper. Alistair and Clair have also brilliantly organised family celebrations for us. The Nelson is a lovely old building, full of character, where you can be sure of a warm welcome and excellent service. They provide a good range of local beer and cider and the food is simply amazing. The chef is very talented - he doesn't do pub grub. His food is restaurant quality making clever use of local and seasonal produce. If you are staying in one of the other B& Bs in the village we recommend visiting The Lord Nelson for supper or lunch. You won't be disappointed!

We recently visited the Lord Nelson while touring England. It had a great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and provided great service. The menu had a wide selection to suit most tastes. We really enjoyed our meals, the beef and ale pie would have been the best I had tasted during our 6 weeks of touring. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Lord Nelson as a place to have a pint of the good local ale and a great meal. A big thank you to Alistair and the team.

Our second visit to the pub for dinner and once again a great experience. Friendly service and a good choice of dishes at reasonable prices. This would definitely be our ‘local’ if we lived nearer!Booking highly recommended as the place has been busy on both mid week occasions we have visited.

Friendly service and good food and beer. Happy to accommodate our toddler, although it is a shame that the children's menu isn't up to the same great standard as the main menu (mass produced fish fingers - would much prefer a small piece of fresh battered fish).

We visited the Lord Nelson as we were in the area and like to enjoy a Sunday carvery. The quality of carveries can vary in England, but this is up there with the best. The choice and quality of the veg in particular was excellent. The oven roasted veg selection was the highlight. Finally, the quality of the service was great. Thanks very much.

Really nice pub. Have eaten here a few times and it's always good. Great menu plus specials on the board. Recommend cold meat platter to start; fish and chips; steak; burgers and creme brûlée for pud. Good selection of beers and wine.

We stopped here for dinner while staying at Snow on the Barn and really enjoyed our grub n suds. Tried treacle for desert, somewhat to the bemusement of nearby locals and found it really sweet, but a good finsh to our traditional meal of steak & ale pie. I give it Four Stars!

We ate at the Lord Nelson twice while in Marshfield. The servers were friendly and the food was good without being spectacular. I had the Breton chicken pie, which was tasty though it clashed a little with the jus, and my companion ate the vegetarian fare, a pasta dish with vegetables and liked it. The local ciders were good. The Lord Nelson offers a variety of meat pies each day. There were 4-5 kinds each time we came in, and they seemed popular. The tables are nicely spaced apart and the atmosphere is friendly. The brownie and ice cream dessert was particularly good - definitely 5 star for that!

Lovely food and varied menu, but the desserts were very slow, had to chase them up and then they arrived promptly. Needs to get a bit better organised as it was busy but not absolutely full.

Garden Ctr is worth a visit. We went there to get some tropical fish from Parkers 🤔 Sadly Parkers are no longer tradeing.
