The London Fryer in Torbay

Food was delivered and was cool on arrival. Generous portion of chips was soggy.

The London Fryer has been an absolute staple for locals for what seems decades. I've never had a bad piece of fish from here. Portion sizes are good and there is a reason there is often a massive queue. The one thing that let's in down in my opinion is their style of chips, they are undercooked for my taste and I personally believe they are so busy they don't cook them for long enough as they are so desperate to get the next batch in. As a family we now get fish from here and cook chips at home or grab chips from elsewhere.

Had takeaway delivered from here and was not impressed at all. The fish tasted like it had been kept warm for ages and was chewy, as was the batter around it. Chips weren't that great either. I've had chips from here from the shop to takeaway in the past too, and I have to say I'm not that impressed given the prices and how they advertise themselves. There are much better fish and chips to be had across the bay.

Absolutely fantastic food and service highly recommended best cod (whale) ive ever tasted so fresh with light crispy batter service was just as good very polite and helpful staff definately be visiting again next time were in the area

Excellent quality fresh food. I tried the Monkfish as a special. Well cooked and generous portions for a reasonable price. Friendly staff. Takeaway or dinning in which is cosy.

Awful! This place used to be so good but not anymore. Nothing cooked to order like it used to be. Soggy, dripping in oil chips. Dry, overcooked fish. This was our go to chippy when we were down this way but it looks like we will have to find another. Shame!

Disappointed. Ordered a family special online and wanted curry sauce and mushy peas, but the site is confusing. The meal comes with sides, but on selection it says NO Mushy Peas, so didnt select it - after all I want them. Needless to say I paid £28 for 2 Fish n Chips and a drink! I tried to call, but answer on the phone, there is no email address that I could find and you can't seem to send a message. Having had numerous meals in the past, I put my frustrations down to experience..... however, placed another order today. Chicken burger, no salad, cheese and mayo plus a burger, salad, cheese and mayo. What turned up? A chicken burger with a stack of salad, and a burger without. Frustration again, it's not what we asked for. Again can't email, phone rings out, so that's why I have reviewed. I shalln't be going there again, I'm not sure what has changed - it's not good.

Delicious fish, I ate monkfish. My husband ate fish and chips. Delicious! I recommend it to fish lovers.

I ordered a King Cod and Chips, with mushy peas, to be delivered. Food was on time, nothing really wrong with it, but just plain average for me. Food was luke warm, at best, the cod had quite a thick batter on it and the chips were average. Mushy peas were disappointing, tasted burnt. For the best part of £18, I did not feel personally it was great value for money.

Feb24 - Another great meal, this time we were fortunate to be visit with Fish skewers on the menu. Deliciously cooked in a tasty sauce and great service and friendliness from all. Many thanks. Dec23 - We did indeed return and the experience was just as brilliant as before. This time tried the house Monkfish and Prawn curry. It was phenomenal. I challenge anyone to show me where else you can get such superb quality of fresh fish, served in a welcoming atmosphere at such good value. Previous Review in Sept 23. This is how restaurants should be. Friendly, knowledgable chefs cooking ultra fresh fish direct from Paignton & Brixham. Reasonably priced, filling portions and a lovely atmosphere. Can't wait to return!

Sadly I was disappointed with it ! Food took an hour to be delivered and was cold. I was so hungry at this point ! Shame because tasted nice. Not worth what we paid

Lovely fish and chips restaurant and takeaway. You can also order online and they deliver. Lots of choice and friendly staff. Food always tastes great and presented well. Highly recommend.

Haddock was excellent as usual but OMG the monk fish was rubbery, VERY small and tasteless...for £11..wow NOT GOOD AND NEVER AGAIN!!

I discovered TLF whilst on a walk today exploring Paignton and Preston. Attracted by how busy on a Wednesday at 130, had to be a good sign! Managed to grab last table to eat in. Takeaway was queuing all the time. Attentive service, perfectly cooked Haddock in very light batter and proper chips. Will visit again when walking 🙂

Ok but nothing special, fish was really good but the chips and peas were disappointing. My partners pie was lovely but again chips and gravy disappointing.

Ordered a donner kebab, wasn't the nicest kebab meat tasted cheap , not in a pitta bread or wrap was in a baguette which was soggy the salad was rubbish had a couple of mouthfuls and chucked it in the bin .. will not use again, very disappointed 😞

Good fish and chips at reasonable prices. The fish came out crispy and cooked well. The chips were a little undercooked for my tastes, but nothing too serious. The tartar sauce was really nice, and the curry sauce was OK too. Service was fairly quick.

Unfortunately not very good. Order was missing an item (pot of curry sauce) which I can get over as it was busy and people make mistakes. However whether busy or not it is unacceptable that the fish had soggy batter, was luke warm at best (chips as well) and was clearly undercooked. Must do better.

Called and was told our order was out on delivery...25 minutes called again. Order was delivered and cold food I'm sure it would be lovely if hot... So disappointed. All went in the bin

Been using this place regularly for over 10 years, and place has gone to sh-t! Had an order a month ago which was missing a couple bits but let it slide. My order yesterday was missing an item, so I called and had to explain to 3 different people I was missing some of my order. They said I can come collect it after already paying for delivery. Meaning by the time I get back the rest of my food would be cold. So I asked for a refund which was refused! The fish delivered was a joke soggy batter which just feel off the soft mushy so called Cod. They took my details and said a manager would call, and guess what no call. So now will contact my card supplier for my refund on the whole order as they have breached the contract. This place used to be good, but now please avoid. Now its over priced and poor poor quality. The way the fish was soggy they must have got it from Icelands!

My wife and I are occasional visitors to this venue, we usually have the OAP special, which is more than ample for our appetites, the food is always piping hot and delicious, and the staff are always friendly, we highly recommend this restaurant, Bob and Glynis

Visited twice on my recent holiday to Paignton. Both times the food was delicious. Fresh fish caught daily, Hake and halibut were caught that day and tasted amazing

We ordered 3 vegan pea fritters and chips and 1 fish deal ( with peas and a can of drink) l asked for 2 Malibu slushies and 1 non alcoholic slushy and a can of coke. We got charged for 1 slushy more than we ordered. There was no alcohol in the 2 slushies. No can of drunk or mushy peas were given. Appalling service, no apologies. We weren’t the only customers querying the orders. Very disappointed

Best chippy in paignton.the evening staff were not the best,girl kept running her hands through her hair whilst serving and was not hygienic.daytime staff are best cause I think they are the owners.

Best damn fish I've ever had, and I had quite a few. It was fresh, beautifully prepared, chips were excellent, mushy peas out of this world, tartar sauce to die for! The customer service was exceptional - Neil took our experience to another level, that's how you should interact with your customers! Atmosphere on spot, I basically could just move to this place <3 Definitely not the last time here! And to all them one stars... Remember, what you give is what you get ;)

Visiting from Australia we found The London Fryer - delicious fish and chips, great service and relaxed atmosphere.

We had fantastic fish and chips here the other day, it was enormous!!. The curry sauce was delicious and massive too!!

Was very excited to try this chip shop. What a disappointment! Ordered a large order online for collection. Picked up and got back to enjoy. To find they couldn’t read the instructions on the order and put salad and Sauce on the chicken burgers for the kids, also missing a sausage. When a called to explain, an offer to delivery was given, but then that quickly changed to we had to return. I arrived and was great by a rude man. No apology for their mistake, when I said they missed the sausage he looked at me like I was a liar. I asked for a few chips added as ours will now be cold by time got back and I was given a smirk, but wouldn’t respond to my question to why! I understand mistakes happen, however the way in which they acted to rectify was appalling. They definitely need to look at their customer service and how they interact with customers. Shame I will not be using or recommending this place in future to my family, friends or clients. I recommend you check your order before leaving the shop!

Ate here a couple years ago on holiday and loved it! Came today and it was abysmal. The "cod" was tasteless and resembled pollock. The portions were tiny and the chips tastes like oven chips. Barely any curry sauce, barely any salt and vinegar. They've definitely started cheaping out as we spent £50 and then cheekily asked for 10p for a bag as if they're tescos or something hahah. terrible.

We love having our fish and chips in the café. Served freshly fried and decorated with a lemon wedge. The addition of homemade tartare sauce to accompany the meal alongside mushy peas and really great flavour curry sauce , is delicious. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The fish we had last night was extremely disappointing.. fish was dry and grey . Have been ordering here for over 3 years.. the selection has gone down and it seems the quality has done too . Time to look for another fish and chip shop ..

We were second in line and waited almost 45 minutes. This would be ok but we were very near the front of the queue and there was no warning that it would take so long before ordering. After chasing them the order was mysteriously ready almost instantly. Used to be a good place, maybe give it a miss nowadays. Or at least through the summer holidays.

So disappointing! After eating inside and takeaway for many years we found our recent experience very disappointing. Yet still we tried it twice! First time table service..the chips were definitely from the bottom of the barrel..mostly inedible tiny crispy bits..the second time a takeaway to eat on the seafront..chips much improved but the fish was dreadful, hard and over cooked. What’s gone wrong? Sadly no longer value for money in terms of quality. Needless to say we won’t be going back .. nor I suspect will any of our family and friends who visit.

Great fish and chips in an amazingly decorated room. Best fish and chips and Fish Cake I have had in ages. We went there twice in a 3 days as it was so nice.

The halloumi burger was amazing! And I couldn't believe they had gluten-free batter! Excellent service and very reasonable prices. Piping hot. I was particularly impressed by how well they cater for gluten free and vegetarian diets.

Visited the London Fryer with my wife and two family members on 4th April. The fish, mushy peas etc were all excellent. Our two relatives said it was the best fish and chips they have ever tasted. The waitress was very pleasant and polite. Well done London Fryer you never disappoint. Highly Recommended.

Great food, so much on the menu. Good portions. As a busy chippy with a big queue, it is always a good sign! The staff work nonstop, so you're not having to wait ages, but it's well worth the wait. My go to Chippy takeaway when visiting the area.

Totally the best of everything here. Try the restaurant it’s small but offers great service and really fresh food with lots of “home made” items. Also there are menu options that don’t include frying… you can have your fresh fish grilled if you like. Look at the sit-down menu! I wish I could give them 6 stars as they really try and are the best in torbay. Alcohol too.

This local fish and chip shop is a hidden gem! They serve fresh fish of the day sourced locally. The friendly staff and deliciously golden fish with crispy chips make it well worth a visit. A must-try for fish and chips enthusiasts.

Thought we would try a different fish and chip shop for a change but we shouldn't of! Average at best Quite greasy, and pretty tasteless.

Use to come here weekly for the dine in special which was usually haddock chips peas/curry sauce and slice of bread and butter and cup of tea/soft drink which normally was 7.99. now I understand the cost of living etc but now it's fish and chips (hake cheap substitute of cod) no bread and butter no drink no peas/curry sauce . We went there tonight and was disgusted at the price once we'd eaten (not actually shown on the board ) £27.40 for hake chips peas and drink. Inflation is one thing but overpricing is something else. I can go too my local chip shop buy 2 regular cod and chips and 2 drinks for 22 quid. Either the London fryer has changed hands not for the better or they've changed supplier hence the excruciating high prices , we will not be returning !!!!
