Hoopers in Torbay

Didn’t have look at the ground the first or second floor we just went in the cafeteria department for the view over the harbour the food what we have was very nice so yes we will tell anyone who ask about the restaurant part

Quality traditional department store. Possibly the last one in Torbay. A high end store over three floors, with lift. Top name brands throughout with professional and courteous staff, all very well presented. It has an excellent cafe/restaurant on the top floor, which can also be accessed at this level from the street behind. This was the highlight of our visit, where we enjoyed high quality meals, whilst enjoying spectacular views over Torquay Harbour. Quiet very few customers but the staff are always pleased to see you and professional.

On 16th January I bought 3 items of clothing and was served by Shirley. She was exceptional, friendly and warm, and immediately pointed out a potential trip hazard recognising that I had a slight balance problem. She kept checking if I needed any help while in the changing room. She is highly trained, very experienced and professional. I understand she has had vast experience at a high level and is certainly an asset to Hoopers.

Coffee shop is always good place to watch the harbour. Also the shop is out of normal people price range but nice to have a look around

Hoppers Cafe is my little rest spot to enjoy a coffee and enjoy the view. My toddler loves it. However, the old staff are a bit loud, not friendly, and act strangly around new people. Their younger staff are really helpful tough.

It is a nice shop but the staff particularly in the make up department are more interested in talking to each other than helping customers….this is why locals end up going to Exeter

Worst experience ever. My Husbands meal order was incorrect but rather than apologising, the Chef came out to our table!!! All they had to do was correct the order. The Chef spoke very loudly until I told her she was causing an embarrassment to us. It was completely the fault of a young member of staff causing problems at the till and a senior member of staff realising this. A horrid nosy couple deciding to take sides over our refund ( there was no row ) leant infront of my calm patient husband saying how they enjoyed theirs ( lucky them) but adding to a horrid situation. We eat out each week end Saturday & Sunday and it's the worst restaurant anywhere ive ever been here or abroad. The staff didn't concentrate on the order at the till but were waving to their family member in the restaurant. The chef had no business to come out and humiliate my husband and I in her loud manner. Hospitality has changed so much since Covid, places have to take what they can get as the people good at hospitality have left and found other roles leaving the poor customer with the worst staff and managers put up with the bad behaviour as they can't employ people who understand Good Customer Service. I'm thoroughly disgusted. The Chef and junior staff need to learn to do their jobs, the Chef should remain in the kitchen at the very least!!! It is not the job of the chef to leave the kitchen and tell us how we should order when it's the staff job to ask specific things like " which Hake"? Knowing full well there were two fish both hake yet completely unknown to us. I'm still very annoyed at this horrid experience in a small busy area

Ordered a scone and cappuccino plus a mocha coffee . I requested 2 butters and was informed there is a 25p charge . The staff at the Torquay store seem to create the prices without a listed price on the poster

One of the last remaining department stores in Torquay. Well worth a visit, can be expensive so look for sale items.

The shop has a very nice coffee shop on the top floor, with cook food. 🍳

A little hidden gem of a cafe. Lovely big windows for a sea view, even in terrible weather. Very calm and relaxed atmosphere and a great place for a cup of tea. Plenty of comfortable solo seating

Hoopers has a nice cafe with a variety of foods on their menu and a nice view. Thismorning we thought we would have brunch, consisting of Welsh rarebit and a coffee. When I asked I was informed in a curt tone the it’s only available Up to 12, I replied it’s only 10.35! So communication was poor and borderline rude.The disgruntled chef agreed to do it . When served it wasn’t toasted, just grilled on bread, so disappointed.

Don’t like to be negative but the staff moaned the hole time I was sat down about how bored they were. I ordered a sandwich because half the menu wasn’t being served due to the chef being off. I know it’s my choice to order the sandwich but I didn’t find out the chef was off until the staff moaned about it so much which means I payed 12 pound for a sandwich that wasn’t made by a proper trained chef and then had to listen to them moan whilst I ate it. Ps I know my grammars awful!

Enjoyed a great meal and chat with a friend. Had a table by the window overlooking the Harbour. Quiche was delicious. Service was good.

Went with two friends for Lunch, first time we visited, and was blown away by the lovely service (Liz especially was very helpful) Will defiantly recommend

Great place for shopping or refreshments. Cafe is overlooking the harbour, staff are excellent, friendly, professional and very helpful. I have never experienced so many great staff in one store before! Highly recommended.

The cafe a great place to enjoy the view from a good vantage point away from the weather. A couple of negative points. 1/ regarding the cleanliness of the cutlery. Why would the kitchen staff wrap items of cutlery in a napkin when there were pieces of food from previous meals still stuck on them ? 2/ very weak teabags, disappointing. 3/ black coffee, luke warm

Amazing customer service from Sarah Prowse with a returned faulty handbag. Sarah located a replacement from another store and promptly sent it to my home address . I don’t live locally but next time I am back in Torquay I know where I will be shopping !! Thank you

My husband and I went to the restaurant today and the lady serving had the best customer service I have encountered in a long time. She was being friendly to another customer snd I commented to my husband how professional she was. I had to write a review to give credit to the hard working staff.

Had a coffee on upper floor, great views over the harbour. Quality products for sale, I bought a lovely skirt, very pleased with it.

Went for lunch had sandwiches which were very nice, the girl behind the counter was very efficient and worked the queue quickly.

We went to the cafe food was ok nothing spectacular service was good staff were excellent

For a department store you have to say fair play. The breakfast was really good quality. It's a great alternative to more mainstream locations. The staff are very accommodating and upon return to tourquay I will come here again.

A quality, old fashioned department store. The entire building was beautifully presented with helpful, knowledgeable staff. The cafe, on the third floor, is a gem. There's a varied menu with some unusual, thoughtful vegan options. Flawless service and great quality food.

Then you at the right place.. it's a surprising shop in a lovely location where it's staff have set out to provide goods you can enjoy...see the video of the fire to keep you warm until the swim season arrives.

I nipped in today and a lovley girl was covering the este lauder counter, she was honestly so polite and took time with me to get the right shade. she gave me at leas 4 different tone matches just to check I got the right one, exceptional attention to detail when it came to my foundation. I think her name was Chaley j she was covering the counter whilst the usual este lauder staff was not there today. Amazing customer service and and a lot of patience. Definitely a credit to hoopers Torquay

Lovely department store & great cafe with wonderful views. A customer had a medical problem, the cafe staff called a first aider who was promptly on the scene with helpful advice followed swiftly by the store manager who was more than helpful too. They rang for further medical advice & waited with the customer & her husband. A superb service all round, well done to the staff 👏

lovely cafe but the younger staff were standing round ready to clear up as soon as we looked like we were going.. obviously prompted by management.. yet only one person working her butt off prepareing drinks etc.. with the resultant long wait in line

Easily one of the nicest department stores in the country. Excellent, traditional service from smartly dressed staff, brilliant clothes, accessories and homeware at reasonable prices and a fantastic cafe/restaurant with sea views and immaculate loos. What more could you want?! Highly recommended.

Overpriced but good coffee in the cafe

I popped into the shop for the purpose of buying perfume but must have looked to poor to buy because none of the staff assisted me on the shop floor (there were a lot of staff too, which was frustrating) ... Myself and my Dad were the only customers on that floor (it wasn't even close to closing time) but staff kept to their own conversations. I moved from one counter to another with no luck. It's a shame, because the reason I went to the bottom of town was for this shop. It hasn't been my first time here either, it has been the same when browsing clothes a month back, I assumed that I was left to my own devices as I had ear phones in at the time, I guess not.

What can I say...terrible place unless you're Royalty. Went in today looking for inspiration for Christmas gifts. Said hello to 2 members of staff standing around, not one word of acknowledgement, how rude. Made to feel VERY uncomfortable and unwelcome. Unless you wear very expensive clothing and talk with a plumb in your mouth, I would stay very far away from this store. To the 'ladies' standing about, manners cost nothing.

Waited 15 minutes to be served only one girl working who was very nice but the coffee is so weak it was almost transparent

Great food, views and service in the restaurant on top floor.

I often will pop into Hooper's when I want something to eat, in nice surroundings and a lovely view . I had a smashing bacon & brie panini and my wife had a salmon and cream cheese sandwich that she said was delicious . The food was at least 4 stars , but the two ladies serving were terribly slow. One didn't want to serve and the other was faffing around on the til and all the while the queue kept growing . Most un-Hooper like

Went into visit the hooper's restaurant as I had been shopping in there. Went to restaurant where I was ignored at first. When I approached the staff member at the checkout I asked for a fruit scone and glass of house white wine. The staff member said 'No'.....a long grumpy pause later, she replied saying you 'you have to order a sandwich if you want wine, can't just be cake'. The lady was slightly judgemental. It's fine if that's the policy however a smile would have been nice and perhaps offered something else. Im in my thirty's and had just received some good news at work so wanted to reward myself. I'm not there to get drunk and certainly was looking for a peaceful glass of wine. I've spent quite a lot in the actual store including Mulberry handbag. However I now don't feel very welcome. Thanks for ruining my afternoon.

We had a lovely cream tea here, their restaurant has lovely views over the harbour. The shop its self is bright and the staff are very friendly and happy to see you.

I’ve been looking for a decent woman’s clothes shop since moving to Torquay and now I’ve found it. Traditional department store, which I must admit initially put me off thinking it would be all old woman’s clothes, but they stock some really nice brands (French Connection, Benetton, Whistles, Hobbs, Barbour, Mulberry bags, Coach bags and Clinique to name a few). It’s the ONLY place to shop for me in Torquay. Lovely friendly staff.

We were eager for a brunch and remembered a previous good experience here in Zest restaurant....Sadly not this time. Miserable staff......no one wanted to take ownership and replenish the toilet paper and.the restaurant was so hot and all the windows were locked shut! Thankfully we had ordered only coffees, which were good , thinking we would order our paninis afterwards.....we didn't....won't be coming back....

Can’t beat the view from the cafe in this department store, prices ok for the type of venue. The scone with jam and cream was warm light and delicious as was the danish pasty. My wife enjoyed her tea. If you like decent strong coffee though this isn’t the place for you. My cappuccino was milky and weak tasting ( I like to taste the coffee) Shame otherwise it would have been 5 stars

Probably the best shop in Torquay to get lunch. The department store has top class brands of clothing for sake but we just had a lunchtime meal. The store is nicely laid out.

Lovely restaurant on top floor (3rd?) with views overlooking Torquay Harbour. There’s a lift or you can walk up six flights of stairs! Quality of cakes is a cut above the rest and staff are very friendly. Prices are fair but you’ll notice a level of attention to detail in the presentation of the food which is, again, a cut above that of other local eateries. Great place for afternoon tea. Oh and their WiFi works really well too.

We were cold on a grey rainy Valentines Day in Torquay, so decided to have a coffee in Hoopers Restaurant. The Restaurant is on the top floor and has stunning views overlooking the harbour. We both decided to have some minestrone soup 🍲. The soup was thick with tomatoes,diced potatoes, herbs and pasta.It was packed with flavour and I can't recommend it more highly. When we complimented the chef another staff member said that he had received a lot of compliments re his wonderful homemade soup. We will definitely go back to Hoopers on our next trip to Torquay x floor floor floor and overlooks

Classic department store, smart staff, relaxed cafe with views.

Refreshingly of a time past but with an up to date restaurant with great views over the harbour. As for the items on offer in all the various departments it is in keeping with the size of the store, but of very reasonable quality.

With nearly everything along the Harbourside closed as it is January and out of season it was suggested I go to Hoopers. Situated on the top floor with wonderful harbour views some of the seats with a view must be like gold dust. It’s a counter operation with a small selection on display including beautiful looking cheese scones I opted for a cheese & onion quiche with salad all very nice with a nice tomato chutney. The area is muddled - they are trying to sell kettles, toasters, cutlery & discounted white China as well as cards, serviettes and other items and it all makes the place look messy - carpet in the front area is dirty and worn and attention to detail is required That apart the cook sends out some nicely presented tasty food and for the most part the serving staff are pleasant

Had a lovely time shopping in Hooper's Torquay. Christine the sales assistant was so friendly and nice. So much better than the Harrogate store staff , who are sometimes very snobby. ( I've had a few pretty women moments in Harrogate store over the years)

Love the old quality Department Stores. This is no exception, quality all round with designer name's on each floor and a reasonably priced restaurant on the top floor. Well worth a visit just to wollow in nostalgia and quality away from charity shop after charity shop on the High Street.

Went friends for lunch..I had soup my friends had quiche..I loved mine but they didn't enjoy theirs.

Lovely store with lots of unique clothes and gifts. The restaurant on the 3rd floor has a varied menu, great views over the bay and fabulous service.

Was in shopping and found their restaurant on the 3rd floor which means it has excellent views over the marina. As it was in the morning we decided to have b/f sandwich. Probably one of the best bacon sandwiches I’ve had and the same for my wife’s sausage one. Both on great fresh bread well cooked and loads of filling and at a very reasonable cost. We were on there for the weekend, just a pity they’re not open on Sunday and Monday!
