We arrived quite late on Friday evening and wanted a light meal and was advised they had a pizzeria out in the open on the field so thought we would venture up there and was met with a lovely young lady called Violet whom was helpful and very chatty. We ordered fish and chips and when arrived looked very presentable and was really nice and not expensive at £13.50 each! Will defo go back and try the restaurant as well. Violets customer service skills were adorable bless her! Nurture this young lady as she will be worth the while to train to run that place in years to come!

Went to try the food after booking a room last minute after a change of plan. Quickly realised it was not a smart choice, food was borderline inedible and service was absolutely awful, felt we had been forgotten only to look over and see the staff showing eachother things on their phones!

Four of us were here for breakfast , as usual it was the best anywhere . nowhere comes close to the quality of the food and the most polite staff, any bad reviews of the lodge should be ignored. we cannot speak to highly of the staff and the manager, always a pleasure to come here

I took 4, 70 year olds, my partner and my young daughter for a carvery meal. When we arrived, there was no Yorkshire puddings or stuffing. Very few vegetables left too. Barely enough for the 7 of us. When my partner and I complained we were laughed at and dismissed by the manager. We were told we had arrived late. We were spot on time for our booking. Following an unacceptable level of customer care from the manager, we asked to speak to the owner. Shockingly, shortly after, we were informed (while we were eating!) we were to leave immediately. The conversation between my partner and the manager became uncomfortable and my partner asked to continue conversation away from the table. The manager then proceeded to invite my partner "outside". The manager .stormed off outside and according to a waitress "he's going sick outside!" My partner did not follow the offer to go outside. We were told the police were being called! We left. My father in-law (who is a dementia sufferer) was very badly sworn at and threatened as he left his drink at the bar. As I left with my five year old the owner shouted "f@&£ing scum!". I was in total shock at absolute rudeness, lack of any customer care and total deteriation of the situation. When we got home we received drop calls from the restaurant and a 2 minute abusive voicemail was left, with terrible swearing and ranting about our supposed mental health/drug/alcohol abuse! And how he was telling the police and was going to post our "images all over social media". Absolutely shocking. As you can see from the rest of the owner responses, the shocking level of abuse we received was obviously not a one off event. Please read other reviews and also the owners replies to them!

Our third visit, but unfortunately our last. We were a party of 4 for the Sunday Carvery. We booked ahead of time and made sure to let them know in advance that one of our party is vegetarian. The vegetarian option normally isn't amazing but it is freshly made. As it's a carvery, everyone goes to the carvery with a plate and chooses what they want. In the past, the vegetarian has been given a plate with their veggie option on separately. On this occasion we were told on arrival the veggie option "wouldn't be too long" and that "by the time the vegetarian had collected their vegetables at the carvery their veggie option would be available". Luckily, the vegetarian chose to wait 10 minutes because it seemed unrealistic that a chef could prepare a veggie dish so quickly. There was then clearly some confusion and a lack of communication between the kitchen and the waiting staff. One member of staff told us it was ready, another then said 2 minutes and then a third told us it would be a further 10 minutes. The veggie option was finally ready after 40 minutes. 20 minutes after everyone else in the party had already started their roasts. The veggie option was unfortunately an undercooked raw filo pastry style dish that had been hurriedly cooked (under 10 minutes I'd say and certainly not 40 min) to make up for lost time. It was inedible. After taking it to the staff and mentioning the fact it was inedible, and the wait for it and the fact we had called ahead to avoid this situation, we were not offered any kind of apology what-so-ever but were charged half the amount for the veggie option, which really should have been taken of the bill entirely given the circumstances. Unfortunately, this has left us not wishing to ever return.

Absolutely fantastic! My son has had a lot of takeaways from Spikes and they all made me feel hungry. We rarely eat out in the evening but we thought we’d give it a go. They are very good at what they do people. They were welcoming, even to our 2 dogs who received a welcome biscuit. The service was fabulous, the food choice and standard was excellent. We don’t go out a great deal as we cook well and often and meals out are in the norm, not as good as home. This was an exception. Very good value, attentive staff, lovely owner and we will be back. Regularly. I can’t believe we are one of their nearest neighbours and haven’t been regular customers. Well done guys. Fabulous!

It was delicious, fast delivery, pipping hot, good quality, and good-sized portions reasonably priced and a varied menu, so something for everyone tastes very clever as takeaways are scarce in this area I will definitely use them again

saw that the lodge is delivering free on Friday and Saturday so thought we'd have a break from the usual Chinese or curry!! We were a little sceptical but when the food was delivered we were really impressed. Not only was the food delicious the quantity was far more than expected. We had the cod and chips and the chicken feast box, the latter being finished off the following evening. Now pondering our next order 😋😋😋

We were greeted by a freindly chap who was wearing sportswear whilst assisting breakfadt which was a bit unusual. Breakfast is help yourself style. Plenty to choose from. Sausages had a strange taste to them. Fruit juices were fine. Butter had melted. Fruit was nice. The tables were sticky because they were using cans of Pledge to clean them. It's a nice looking restaurant with plenty of seating. It just needs a few changes. It's average. It could be excellent

We had a lovely overnight stay here , and had 2 very enjoyable meals. The evening meal of Prawn Cocktail starter (LOVED that this was on offer 🤩) High quality chunky "Lodge" burgers in artisan buns with trimmings , lovely crunchy fries, and homemade coleslaw with red and white cabbage, plus a mixed fruit crumble with gorgeous high quality strawberry & vanilla ice cream . We enjoyed everything and cannot fault it. Merlot wine was really good and the Black Sheep beer too. Service was attentive without being fussy. Perfect . Breakfast was help yourself to an array of cereals, juices, multiple fruit options ,cold meats, toast etc , decent filter coffee and all diets appeared catered for with various nut and soya milks on offer. Full English was also available cooked to order and was delicious. High quality ingredients used throughout and you could really taste the difference with proper sausages and tasty bacon. Highly recommended.

We were gutted that the Lodge was full and therefore couldn’t stay over. However, having sampled the food on offer at Spike’s previously we were eager to enjoy another meal there as part of our weekend away and as usual…. we were not disappointed. Despite being full with a large party of walkers ordering at the same time…. We were seated and served almost immediately. The food was superb… I would definitely recommend the pie of the day! The food was tasty, value for money and beautifully presented. Lee and his team were faultless and the Lodge surroundings continue to impress thanks to Lee’s continued hard work and vision. He is certainly on course to turn the Lodge and restaurant a destination of choice when visiting the area. Would totally recommend. 10/10

We booked two nights recently as my son had a sporting event nearby and we thought we would make a weekend of it at the end of half term, we arrived Friday PM, we already knew the restaurant was not available on the Friday night so that was no problem for us as we were happy to go elsewhere. It seemed odd however that when we returned later after our meal out they were serving food but not busy. Room was functional and comfortable in a motel style. Hot shower and comfy beds. I would suggest these rooms were suited to the sort of activity we were doing not a romantic break for two. Slept well apart from the the early part of Saturday night when a group of non English speaking people seemed to be having a massive excitable conversation/row. I could not work out where they were, guess there was half a dozen of them, it was raining so not outside but it went on almost to the point that I was about to get up and tell them to tone it down a bit and it stopped. Breakfast was buffet style and was as good as you would find in any similar style establishment. I have put average as there is nothing between average and very good. Too many notices in the restaurant and buffet area telling us how to behave and warning us we would be thrown out if we abused the staff, fair enough but I looked at the other guests and none of them (nor us) looked like they were about to 'kick off'. There was another notice telling us not to take too much food (we didn't) I wonder what sort of guests they normally had!! Dark haired younger lady was around at both breakfast times was very friendly. Kitchen guys were good and busy bringing out freshly cooked breakfast items. I presume the owner manager was the middle aged guy wandering about. He did look like he would punch you if you upset him, I am guessing he wrote the notices? Take him out of the equation I and I think this place would vastly improved. He did look like he wanted to hit someone who ate their toast too loudly!! Would we stay again? Yes if we were taking part in an event so room was just a base. Not for romantic breaks I don't think. Functional and comfortable. I don't envy anyone running this sort of business as I would image some guests are an utter nightmare but it is like being at school when teachers accuses the whole class of doing something even though you know it was not you, you feel guilty. All the notices put you off a bit. I do think the vast majority of people do know how to behave. They certainly did at our stay........apart from the shouters I never did track down..... I wish there was something between average and very good! It loses point because of grumpy man.

Absolutely Awful, Possibly the worst meal I have had in my life, Went here as a party of 6, and after reading the menu online expectations were high. This Restaurant claimed to be casual fine dining with a Oyster Menu , Steak Menu , Small Plate menu and a Large Plate Menu all of which looked really good. On arrival we were shown to our table which was just a plain round table with a knife and fork adjacent to each chair.....Not very fine! We were then given the menu on a printed out piece of A4 paper which just had a selection of Burgers/Fish and chips /Lasagne/Spagetti Bol and Fillet or sirloin steak and some sides! No oyster menu, or any of the fine dining on their website.. It was just a pub menu nothing else. When we asked about this we were told that the chef was off and that this was the menu. We asked if it possible to have fish without the batter with just a salad , which the waiter said "yes,we will work the menu around you", we also ordered a vege pizza and spaghetti bolg and a steak. We waited over an hour for the food, when it arrived the fish was battered, and when the waiter was questioned he said chef said "there was no batter on the fish, so there wasn't any batter on the fish".When he was challenged about this he became abusive towards us. The spaghetti bol was made with tagliatelle and there was no sauce it was just dry meat mixed with pasta. The pizza had the wrong ingredients on, so another was ordered.... when this turned up it was still wrong and we were told they didnt have the correct ingredients for this pizza! The steak was supposed to come with roasted tomatoes.. it came with some cold cherry tomatoes, we then asked for some roasted tomatoes, when these finally turned up they were slammed on the table. We were also served warm bottled larger. There was absolutely nothing fine about this place and it was truly awful, the owner should not be allowed to use Spike Milligans name to endorse his restaurant. The service was appalling and the food was just as bad!!! BE WARNED CANT GIVE THIS REVIEW ANY STARS BUT HAVE TO GIVE 1 TO POST THIS

We had booked a table for 5. When we arrived there was a queue at the bar & someone was waiting to check in to the hotel, so the one member of staff was dealing with all this. We eventually got shown to our table & drinks orders were taken. We then ordered our food. When the meals did arrive, there were only 4. We waited expecting the last meal to come out next. Then a member of staff came back to say the chef had misread the order & was now cooking the last meal. So 4 of us were eating slowly hoping the last meal would arrive but we had more or less finished our food before the last meal arrived, which really spoilt the evening. We had also wanted to order another round of drinks, but this took some doing as the staff were very hard to find. When the bill arrived it appeared that we were not being charged for the last round of drinks (1 bottle of wine & 1 pint of bitter) which we thought was a good gesture for the food debacle. However when we went to the bar to pay they charged us for more than the bill they had presented to us. When we queried this we were told they had mad a mistake with the original bill. We reminded them about the late meal & were told that we had eaten the meal & they were giving us a pint of bitter for free! The young man serving us was quite rude about the whole thing. We will certainly not be returning there to be poorly served mediocre food.

We came for a family wedding and stayed for 2 nights in a family room, 2 adults and 3 children at a cost of £230. The room was awful, to start it was dark, just 2 spot lights over the desk and 2 lights by the bed. Non in the actual ceiling and the smell of damp hit you as soon as the door opened.. The bathroom was disgusting, mould all around the shower tray, the door looked like it had never been cleaned, cobwebs as thick.as my finger hanging down from the window.. I went to the local Jempsons and bought some bleach to clean it before my children got in it. When the shower was used, it was a mere trickle and the water only reached Luke warm.. the room was no way a family room, with a double bed and 1 set of dodgy bunk beds, and the small amount of floor space we had was taken up by the dreadful put up bed we had for our youngest. This bed was never used as he sat on it and fell straight through, lats were missing and the ones that were attached fell through. It was a nightmare! He ended up sleeping in the bottom bunk with his sister, after a 7 hour journey and a wedding the next day, this was not ideal. We were all on top of ourselves getting ready for the wedding, it was a nightmare. However, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was amazing. The only positive to the stay. They quite clearly did not have the space to put us as a family of 5, I wish they just told us this so we could have found elsewhere with more room.

We stayed at The Lodge around fours years ago and had a very nice time, both at the hotel and in the Rye area, which we love. Not sure if it has changed hands, but the warm welcome was distinctly lacking this time. The guys on reception barely said hello. We are a couple and booked a family room as it was the only one available. Half of the room was ok, but the other half was dark and poorly lit, so I wouldn't recommend it.We ate one evening meal at the hotel and struggled to find anything we really wanted, so opted for a chicken burger, which came with dry (oven cooked) chips. Quite pricey and mediocre, compared to a fantastic, handcooked meal at the Horse and Cart in Peasemarsh the next night for around £15.In fairness though, the cooked breakfast was excellent, with delicious local sausages and they were very hot on Covid cleanliness. Can't recommend though.

2 night stay with dinner and breakfast booked via ‘Buyagift.com’. Found this venue on Buyagift.com at the last minute. Rang The Lodge direct to check availability for the following two nights. Spoke to Lee who was happy to accommodate our booking and looked forward to welcoming us. Email from Reuben at The Lodge the next day to confirm our booking. On arrival, immediately impressed by bar/restaurant area. Light, modern and welcoming. Greeted by Reuben who checked us in immediately and was warm and friendly. Reuben explained current COVID measures and encouraged us that should we need anything, to not hesitate to ask. The accommodation is situated around a central courtyard and are more akin to apartments. Ours was on the 1st floor, comprising one double bed and a single. Very spacious and spotlessly clean. Split level down to shower room, again spotlessly clean. Plenty of fresh towels provided, although some were a tad worn. Bed linen fresh and spotless. Pillows are not of the best quality and I would have liked to have seen pillow protectors in place. Room well thought out and plenty of storage albeit with a lack of hangers, only 4 provided. Dinner was fabulous, the steak we ordered was enormous and of great quality and flavour.Reasonably priced wine by the bottle, we chose a Shiraz which complemented our meal perfectly., rich and fruity and great value for money. Bed was comfortable and despite being next to busy A259, had a good quality sleep. Room was cosy and the blackout blind worked well. Breakfast next day was superb, good quality local ingredients. Only criticism would be that the toast needed longer and we had to ask for butter as breakfast on day 2, we ordered poached eggs on toast and it came with very underdone, un-buttered ‘toast’. However, when asked, butter was immediately provided. All in all, I would highly recommend The Lodge as a great place to stay, there are a couple of minor things which could be improved upon and I do believe that the current owner is addressing these as a ‘work in progress’. I can’t wait to visit again. Special thanks to Reuben and Lucy.

Everything was good with the meal apart from one thing. The ketchup was all wrong and that pretty much ruins any meal. If you don't like cheap ketchup, or if you have a preference for a certain variety of ketchup like most of the population then I suggest bringing your own ketchup if you plan to eat there. As I said though, the two meals we had were great apart from the ketchup. With the right ketchup this place gets a definite 5 star rating.

We had just visited Hastings, very disappointing most of the town ruined by new development, still we found the prettier old town. All eateries in Hastings only seem to serve fish and chips so we drove back to Camber. Beaten by hunger at 2.30 we stopped at this motel which was advertising Sunday lunch from 12 to 4. Meat was delicious as were Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes, friendly service, some vegetables such as carrots and red cabbage survived the heat well, but others like the cauliflower and peas and beans were nuked [over-cooked]. Still reasonable value at £10.95 each. The Stowford Press cider was good. The Lodge appears very modern with lots of parking and a large bar, but there is no atmosphere and on our visit it was not busy.

The carvery was ok, it filled a hole (we were all starving by this point) but I usually judge a good roast by the potatoes and these were not great. The kids carvery is good value at £5 being only a slightly smaller plate than the adults so the waitress saved us some money here at least.

We came for lunch on the weekend, the menu is really cheap and good value but even so the food was poor considering it was absolutely dead and nobody else was eating food. Pate didn't taste great and the toast was burnt, the croquettes were good but quite measly portions, the sausage and mash was fine apart from the number of hairs I found in my potato and the seafood platter is a bit of a joke really. Some chips, peas and literally just scampi and fish fingers. Shouldn't be called a platter at all. The staff are nice and the decor is very modern, but poor food and no atmosphere. Not bad for a cheap meal I suppose.

We ate on the Friday night and only two other tables were occupied, it did mean the service was good though. The ambiance is modern but a bit too dark and it could be warmer. The food was reasonably priced and my wife enjoyed a nice salmon and prawn main course. My steak was ok but a little chewy and could have done with being tenderised before cooking

We ate here because we were staying in the lodge, on the first night my husband had the salmon from the specials menu, it came with new pots, carrots and green beans, I had the lasagne, both were a success, we finished with lemon meringue sundae and Eton mess, both rich and creamy. The second night we had Romany mushrooms and pate as starters, very nice , then we both ate from the specials , my husband had plaice again with the same veg as the previous night, I had the mushroom and almond stroganoff ,really nice , we were so full after neither of us could eat desserts, if we are in the area we will certainly eat here again

Very friendly staff and the food was very good. Only disappointment was that there was no meat free carvery option so options were limited. Having said that, the Mediterranean Vegetable Pasta was very good indeed. Waiting times a little long considering it wasn't overly busy. Recommended if you're passing.

We (4 persons) took the opportunity on the way back to our hotel at Winchelsea for a well-done regional English supper. The quality was very good, except some vegetables. A friendly service is always present and the waiting time was at a minimum. The environment is good and functionable, but nothing special.

We embarked upon The Lodge for my mother in laws 60th birthday celebrations. The early signs were not encouraging as we were the only customers that evening. We ordered food and drinks and the service was average. The local beer was delicious and the other drinks were pleasant, however the food is where the issues began. We all opted to have three courses as it was a family celebration, unfortunately this was a bad decision. Each course that came out was terrible, the starters were oily, over cooked and looked like an amateur home cook was the cooking that evening. The Mains arrived and it is beyond me how they felt not appropriate to serve a burger cold, floppy greasy chips next to Ann over cooked cod. Things got even worse at desert when the sticky toffee pudding wasn't edible and the crumble had gone soft due to exposure to a microwave. All in all I felt robbed when I begrudgingly paid out portion of the bill.We will not be returning and would recommend a journey into Rye where you will find far better eateries.

We have been here on two occasions on a Sunday for Sunday carvery as I'd finished work and didn't want to cook - we thought we would book and go and save me washing up.We once popped in the past and stood there waiting and was ignored but this time we were greeted made welcome it has changed hands and much for the better We had the Sunday roast and three different meats turkey, beef and lamb with plenty of veg, and a large Yorkshire and trimmings and gravy - we had loads good value for money- we didn't have room for pudding. The staff are very friendly and have a sense of humour- if I'm working the early shift on a Sunday it will be a regular place to go, saves me cooking and washing up

Lovely place in a lovely remote location, we were travelling from Deal to Hastings and picked this as our dinner break with the kids. We arrived and were very welcomed by the bar manager who arranged our table and got the kids things to do, he chatted to the kids and us which made us feel at ease: Service was great, plenty of space around the table for high chairs and people to pass, really clean and most importantly the food was scrumptious and well priced Good portion sizes and a great choice. Parking was easy the hotel was presented well and we will be back there on our travels again soon enough.

On our way to Winchelsea and stumbled across this little find - we were hungry and decided to stop for a bite to eat.It was really nice.Price: 2 courses for £9.95I had calamari to start and Liver and bacon for main - I couldn't fault it - it was very quiet for a Friday afternoon at about 2.30 but that was fine with us. Well worth a visit if in the area. The Guy who served us was pleasant as was the chap who brought out our meals from the Kitchen. we enjoyed it so much we returned , the same day with my sister and her friend, who had the Skate Wings. they said it was lovely!

There were 7 adults and 1 child in our party, 5 of the adults had the car very and enjoyed it. My partner and Inopted for salmon as we'd eaten a lot of meat during our holiday and needed something different. It was ok, but I wouldn't order it again, therefore I can't recommend it. My daughter had chicken and chips and it was ok as children's meals go, it suited her. We had another night in the hotel but decided to eat at another restaurant further down the road.

Worst Sunday lunch I've ever had potatoes tasted like they had sat around for hours and warmed up, The food was only luke warm when we got it didn't taste right at all the gravy was disgusting, the beef was so tough that you cut it and my partner nearly choked on it, two of us left most of our lunch when asked if everything was OK we said to the member of staff about it he said he would tell the Chef and nothing more was said, nobody came to the table to ask if we would like anything else or the bill we had to go to the bar and the other member of staff was oblivious to our complaint and when I had to explain it again I was offered a measly 10% off the carvery but after saying I still wasn't happy they increased it to 25% off the food price! should have been a full refund would not recommend to anyone.

I booked 2 rooms and went for 2 nights from Saturday 28 May. Our room was very nice but bed was too hard. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the carvery which I had read so much about was a complete let down. The York puddings were burnt and the potatoes tasted like they had been reheated. I would definitely recommend the Lodge but sadly not the carvery.

Chose this restaurant as it has a varied but simple menu with a few vegetarian choices. My dad is a very fussy vegetarian who doesn't like mushrooms or anything fancy! Massive portions of well cooked food. It was pretty quiet, which is a real shame, although timid appealed to us. The service was friendly and efficient.

Staff are fantastic always friendly have eaten many times here and had birthday celebrations too.I apologise to staff for not writing review before. When I go with my mum or the whole family it is nearly always on a Sunday for the carvery and have never been disappointed or had a bad experience from start to finish, staff are so attentive nothing's too much trouble. A lot of establishments could reflect on their service offered here. The food on a Sunday is always hot cooked well and I find it hard to fault or what else they could do to improve. The only reason I didn't give 5stars is because I am such a banoffee pie connoisseur its let down by a hard pastry base, wrong wrong wrong (lol) biscuit base please. Would recommend give it a try not always what you want as I like to have a table to be served at too but as a carvery worth a visit.

The service let this restaurant down, the staff were polite and helpful but the waitress seemed to have not only to serve in the bar, but to show people to a table, take orders and bring food to the table too. The food was good, nice and hot, well cooked and the surroundings pleasant. Maybe we ate on a day when they were short staffed.

On arrival we were given half the number of menus we needed, drinks took a long time to arrive and main course took an age to arrive too, even though there was only one other table occupied when we arrived. The food was dissapointing: over cooked green beans, dried out roast turkey, burger without any sauces. the waiter was not trained, if we didn't ask we didn't get.The manager complained about the owners and the chef, but at least the bill was correct because the overcharges were balanced out by the omissions.Have been to this restaurant before and have had good meals, the new cheaper menu is not what we want, we want good food and good service, is that too much to ask?

This lovely restaurant is surrounded by stunning countryside and on a sunny day is the perfect setting for a roast dinner with the family. We all decided on having the carvery but no starters. The choice of meats was roast beef, glazed gammon and turkey. There was a good choice of vegetables and the biggest roast potatoes I have ever seen. Although we were full we wanted to try the desserts for future reference and they too were delicious; from the apple crumble to the the Bakewell tart with custard. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We will most definitely be going back this delightful restaurant.

To be honest I had no real idea of what The Bell would be like when I booked it. The location was convenient for a function we were attending elsewhere. What a revelation, this place is amazing. You have to consider that the "project " is ongoing, but this doesn't impact on anything. The standards are great. Service, welcome and the whole experience was amazing. While entering the bedroom, the standard of which it had been decorated and furnished to was just way above what you could have expected. Only down side was that we were only staying the one night.

I've read a few not quite so favourable reviews recently - you can only report as you find, I understand that- so I thought I'd add this one from this evening. Four of us enjoyed a relaxing meal, at reasonable cost (ok, the desserts might be a smidge expensive, but they were nice); main courses of steak and kidney pud (which my friend thought was the best she had probably ever eaten out), giant haddock and chips, which really was pretty sizeable and lovely, Moroccan stew -very tasty with good sides, and belly pork (with which the mustard mash was a highlight) were well cooked and enjoyed by all. A new barrel of Harveys Best had just been tapped, and wine by the glass was good value and quality. Service was exemplary (yes, the pub wasn't that busy, but that doesn't always mean good service). We thoroughly enjoyed our evening - both members of front-of-house staff who looked after us (one apparently being very new) were delightful, and added to our enjoyment.

Heard lots of good reviews, but was disappointed. The soup had to be sent back as it was tepid at best. The sandwiches were laughable for the cost, would have got a better deal out of a supermarket at a cheaper cost. Unable to reserve a table for six of us and had to chance availability. Apparently you can reserve if you are having a cream tea. Would return to walk the grounds and have a coffee, which was decent, but would not waste my money on the food.
