To be honest I had no real idea of what The Bell would be like when I booked it. The location was convenient for a function we were attending elsewhere. What a revelation, this place is amazing. You have to consider that the "project " is ongoing, but this doesn't impact on anything. The standards are great. Service, welcome and the whole experience was amazing. While entering the bedroom, the standard of which it had been decorated and furnished to was just way above what you could have expected. Only down side was that we were only staying the one night.

Thought we'd be staying in a room above the pub, so a little surprised that the rooms are converted barns at the back - but offered good amount of space. Wasn't plugged in to central heating so a little cold initially, but electric radiators in the room to plug in solved the problem. Evening menu was restricted to pizzas - a temporary measure we were told - but that wasn't too inconvenient as Rye is 5 mins drive away. It's almost got a camping feel as you open the door in the morning and see the lawn outside - definitely plan to go back.

What a find, this place is. Full of old world country warm, comfy leather chairs and a warm welcome. A glass of Prosecco and the best pizza I’ve ever tasted later and I had found my new favourite Friday evening food and drink venue. Definitely worth a visit.

We hadn’t been to The Bell for about two and a half years so a visit was well overdue. We also noted it was under new management. A very nice welcome from the young lady behind the bar who took our drinks order and brought them over to the ‘snug’. A lovely area with a nice open door wood burner. I noticed they now sell Harvey’s East Sussex bitter, which is great. We were shown to our table and ordered our food. I went for a King Prawn cocktail starter (as hadn’t had one for maybe 10 years). It was very good. My main was a full beef roastie with horse radish. Again, very nice with the beef not overdone. A shared pudding of plum and berry crumble was excellent. The price was pretty good although maybe top end for a roast dinner. Some observations: there was no salt and pepper on any table, my wife wasn’t offered any sauces i.e. mustard for her chicken at any time, the young waitress seemed a little out of her depth, although tried very hard to keep everyone happy and finally the wine list is extensive but expensive. The owner was very nice as we were leaving, ensuring we had good food etc, so a nice touch sir. The real question though is would I go back……absolutely yes. Within 10 minutes of my village we have several excellent Sunday venues and I have now added the Bell to that list.

Great food and great staff. We arrived early so had a drink in the bar area while we waited for our table to be available. The staff were very aware and kept us updated with when our table would be ready and offered to serve us in the bar area if we preferred to eat immediately. We ordered 3 roast beefs (and 1 pork) all cooked differently and were impressed that they were indeed cooked as ordered. It was a tower of beef spuds veg and a large Yorkshire on top, with generous amounts of horseradish in a bowl, and gravy. You won't go hungry at the Bell!! It wasn't just filling it was good quality food too. Only 2 of us had space for dessert which were also generous sized portions with plenty of cream to drizzle on top. Can't wait to return

The roast pork dinner I had was delicious, a huge lump.of pork and good selection of well cooked vegetables. I have deducted one star because the precariously balanced, gigantic Yorkshire pudding full of gravy was so unsteady that, as soon as I touched it, it toppled over and cascaded gravy over the table. It tasted lovely but perhaps should be served less precariously. I would eat there again but just be more cautious.

We just had a really lovely meal at The Bell, Iden which included starters, main meal and a gorgeous surprise, chocolate mousse birthday cake, with singing to accompany it. Great service from all the staff, especially from Jodie. Always good to arrive a little earlier and have a pre dinner drink in the cosy snug area with log burner, while listening to jazz music. 😊.

We were disappointed. The accommodation was over a bomb site area- a health and safety issue…( ‘it’s under new management’), with stained carpets. The website said cooked breakfast. We were offered stale croissants and yoghurt. The owner claimed he had never offered cooked breakfasts, despite the website evidence. We were eventually offered some compensation. The evening meal was expensive, and unappetising. The manager tried to be helpful. The wine list was its saving grace. Wouldn’t recommend.

Came over for a week holiday from Guernsey, catching up with family. Spent the week eating out and feeling quite disappointed with the quality of the food. However, I had a lamb curry here and it was probably the best curry I have ever eaten. I had bacalava for desert and that was sensational too. The food, wine and hospitality was faultless 100/100! Highly recommend!

This pub has recently changed hands, with a new chef and bar team. The menu is great, more interesting than the usual pub fare. Although it has some pub classics, there are more interesting dishes with a middle eastern twist. The lamb with chick peas and aubergines was delicious, as was the baklava and pistachio semifreddo. Would highly recommend.

The chap behind the bar was very friendly and made us welcome, we had a couple of lagers and I decided to have a bitter....big mistake. The line had not been pulled through so initially was served a pint of warm chemical soapy beer, it was returned and replaced however they did not draw the beer through so the next pint in the line was less soapy but had a chemical backwash... Lovely.

We had 2 meals at this pub as it was our local and very close to our holiday accommodation. Although it is undergoing refurbishment outside (where we chose to sit as it was so hot), we really enjoyed the ambience and the staff welcome. The staff were very keen to serve and please and the food was excellent. Definitely recommended. It's not traditional pub food, but all the better for this, in our opinion.

Menu isn't to my liking nor is £16 for a wrap and £32 for a stake. But the reason I'm unhappy was because the new own likes to agree to something then go back on what we I actually spoke about to then be told they've only opened for me at 9am because I wanted breakfast and wouldn't open usually until 12 but the funny thing was on the way out there's a great big sign put out by the road saying breakfast served from 9am so Mr new owner I suggest you stop trying to pull a fast one, by making your customers feel they are in the wrong for getting you out of bed when it clearly says 9 a.m. breakfast served I had a really good evening until I had to deal with you in the morning with your childish behaviour. Because ultimately its resulted in this bad review

As we are local we popped by for a drink and a meal. We love the jazz music, the art, food and the ambience, plus the dog friendly owner of the pub. My husband used to visit the beautiful Village of Iden when he was a kid and whenever we are down that way we always pop to Iden and visit the Bell. Tried to book a room on numerous occasions but it was always booked up. Finally managed to book a weekend away in January this year and it was absolutely fantastic. Lovely accommodation and fully equipped with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Vic who runs the Bell inn is a brilliant host and really made myself, husband and our Dog feel very welcome and we enjoyed our stay so much that we booked again for the husbands birthday and have just returned from another fantastic weekend. Visited here last Thursday. Awful! The waitress was doing everything as staff had not turned up- she tried really hard but the food was extremely variable. The Camembert starter was fine but my uncle’s tomato soup was indescribable- it looked even thicker than a pack of passata. There was hardly any chilli mixture in the chilli con carne which was swamped with sour cream and avocado mix. The only meal that was acceptable was the ham,egg & chips. Such a shame - nice location but rubbish.

We went here for a meal on Saturday evening and I think I can say it was the worst meal we have ever had. My husband ordered nachos which was a pile of food just chucked onto the plate, he did not finish it and said it tasted as bad as it looked. I had the pie of the day which had miraculously changed from chicken and ham to steak and ale - no problem, I like both. When it arrived half the plate was covered with what was meat to be mashed potato, tasted like instant though, a few bits of carrot and some peas, no gravy, all looked very dry and unappetising. The pie appeared to have come from a supermarket “value” range. The whole meal was cold, when eating out I like something better or different to what I would cook at home - it was certainly different. Foolishly ordered a pudding, Eton mess. Well the mess was right but Eton it was not. Lots of blueberries, a few raspberries and a. Rushed up meringue nest. Having said all that the beer and wine was good.

my wife and i paid a visit on sunday, after being turned away 2 weeks earlier as staff shortages, and travelling 30 miles, and waited over 30 minutes for our sunday roast, we were the only customers at this point. it was terrible, beef tough, 2 roasts, what looked like leeks, red cabbage, 2 bits of carrots and parsnip and yorkshire and little gravy. it was luke warm. 3 customers came in and they waited longer for what they ordered and sent it back as it was cold, and walked out. , as we waited for deserts for what seems like 30 minutes again, and only one cheesecake left so ordered brownie and ice cream . the staff didn't seem to care or be helpful. and we had to wait ages to pay the bill of £38 and the pub only had a few customers at the bar. we did have a nice meal the last time but this was horrible and we dont want to go back there again.

After a 40 minute wait, in a restaurant with only 2 other dinners. A starter of baked camembert with focaccacia came out as barely warm not melted with a single slice of toast. I’ve just got back from staying with some friends in Iden. I have visited the Bell before, we went for dinner on Saturday evening I had the steak and mushroom pie with mash and seasonal vegetables. (actually I asked for chips instead of the mash), And requested no carrots (whenever I see seasonal vegetables I always think carrots will appear) I was offered peas or beans as a substitute. The pie didn’t disappoint, full of meat plenty of mushrooms even extra gravy to put on the pastry lid and chips. Licking the plate is frowned upon so I resisted. Then the sticky toffee pudding arrived which was light but had the right amount of stodgyness to be very moorish. The service was quick but not intrusive at all. It was so good we went for Sunday lunch which didn’t disappoint either. They have a great range of beers and the bar has a lovely local atmosphere. No doubt I’ll be back hopefully soon

I've read a few not quite so favourable reviews recently - you can only report as you find, I understand that- so I thought I'd add this one from this evening. Four of us enjoyed a relaxing meal, at reasonable cost (ok, the desserts might be a smidge expensive, but they were nice); main courses of steak and kidney pud (which my friend thought was the best she had probably ever eaten out), giant haddock and chips, which really was pretty sizeable and lovely, Moroccan stew -very tasty with good sides, and belly pork (with which the mustard mash was a highlight) were well cooked and enjoyed by all. A new barrel of Harveys Best had just been tapped, and wine by the glass was good value and quality. Service was exemplary (yes, the pub wasn't that busy, but that doesn't always mean good service). We thoroughly enjoyed our evening - both members of front-of-house staff who looked after us (one apparently being very new) were delightful, and added to our enjoyment.

The staff are incredibly warm and welcoming, the food is exceptional, the beer is amazing, and it retains the old fashioned atmosphere of a proper pub. Thankyou so much Ellie, Mark, Cat and Trudy for making us feel so welcome.
